Abstract:Cummings, Foreman, and Magidor investigated the extent to which square principles are compact at singular cardinals. The first author proved that if $\kappa$ is a singular strong limit of uncountable cofinality, all scales on $\kappa$ are good, and $\square^*_\delta$ holds for all $\delta<\kappa$, then $\square_\kappa^*$ holds. In this paper we will present a strongly contrasting result for $\aleph_\omega$. We construct a model in which $\square_{\aleph_n}$ holds for all $n<\omega$, all scales on $\aleph_\omega$ are good, but in which $\square_{\aleph_\omega}^*$ fails and some weak forms of internal approachability for $[H(\aleph_{\omega+1})]^{\aleph_1}$ fail. This requires an extensive analysis of the dominating and approximation properties of a version of Namba forcing. We also prove some supporting results.

Abstract:This is a revised version (of late 2020) of [Sh:700], which is <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math/0012170" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math/0012170">arXiv:math/0012170</a> . First point is noting that the proof of Theorem 4.3 in [Sh:700], which says that the proof giving the consistency $ \mathfrak{b} = \mathfrak{d} = \mathfrak{u} < \mathfrak{a} $ also gives $ \mathfrak{s} = \mathfrak{d} $. The proof uses a measurable cardinal and a c.c.c. forcing so it gives large $ \mathfrak{d} $ and assumes a large cardinal. Second point is adding to the results of \S2,\S3 which say that (in \S3 with no large cardinals) we can force $ {\aleph_1} < \mathfrak{b} = \mathfrak{d} < \mathfrak{a}$. We like to have $ {\aleph_1} < \mathfrak{s} \le \mathfrak{b} = \mathfrak{d} < \mathfrak{a} $. For this we allow in \S2,\S3 the sets $ K_t $ to be uncountable; this requires non-essential changes. In particular, we replace usually $ {\aleph_0}, {\aleph_1} $ by $ \sigma , \partial $. Naturally we can deal with $ \mathfrak{i} $ and similar invariants. Third we proofread the work again. To get $ \mathfrak{s} $ we could have retained the countability of the member of the $ I_t$-s but the parameters would change with $ A \in I_t$, well for a cofinal set of them; but the present seems simpler. We intend to continue in [Sh:F2009].

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the model-theoretic study of pairs ( K, F ) where K is an algebraically closed field and F is a distinguished subfield of K allowing extra structure. We study the basic model-theoretic properties of those pairs, such as quantifier elimination, model-completeness and saturated models. We also prove some preservation results of classification-theoretic notions such as stability, simplicity, NSOP 1 , and NIP. As an application, we conclude that a PAC field is NSOP 1 iff its absolute Galois group is (as a profinite group).

Abstract:Part I: We would like to generalize imaginary elements, weight of ${\rm ortp}(a,M,N),{\mathbf P}$-weight, ${\mathbf P}$-simple types, etc. from [Sh:c, Ch.III,V,\S4] to the context of good frames. This requires allowing the vocabulary to have predicates and function symbols of infinite arity, but it seemed that we do not suffer any real loss. Part II: become [1238] Good frames were suggested in [Sh:h] as the (bare bones) right parallel among a.e.c. to superstable (among elementary classes). Here we consider $(\mu,\lambda,\kappa)$-frames as candidates for being the right parallel to the class of $|T|^+$-saturated models of a stable theory (among elementary classes). A loss as compared to the superstable case is that going up by induction on cardinals is problematic (for cardinals of small cofinality). But this arises only when we try to lift. But this context we investigate the dimension. Part III: become [1239] In the context of Part II, we consider the main gap problem for the parallel of somewhat saturated model; showing we are not worse than in the first order case.

Abstract:In this note, we shall generalize the notion of a $P$-space to proximity spaces and investigate the basic properties of these proximities. We therefore define a $P_{\aleph_{1}}$-proximity to be a proximity where if $A_{n}\prec B$ for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$, then $\bigcup_{n}A_{n}\prec B$. It turns out that the class of $P_{\aleph_{1}}$-proximities is equivalent to the class of $\sigma$-algebras. Furthermore, the $P_{\aleph_{1}}$-proximity coreflection of a proximity space is the $\sigma$-algebra of proximally Baire sets.

Abstract:We prove that externally definable sets in first order NIP theories have honest definitions, giving a new proof of Shelah's expansion theorem. Also we discuss a weak notion of stable embeddedness true in this context. Those results are then used to prove a general theorem on dependent pairs, which in particular answers a question of Baldwin and Benedikt on naming an indiscernible sequence.

Abstract:This paper treats linear algebra over a semiring pair, in a wide range of applications to tropical algebra and related areas such as hyperrings and fuzzy rings. First we present a more general category of ``pairs'' with their morphisms, called ``weak morphisms,'' paying special attention to supertropical pairs, hyperpairs, and the doubling functor. Then we turn to matrices and the question of whether the row rank, column rank, and submatrix rank of a matrix are equal. Often the submatrix rank is less than or equal to the row rank and the column rank, but there is a counterexample to equality, discovered some time ago by the second author, which we provide in a more general setting (``pairs of the second kind'') that includes the hyperfield of signs. Additional positive results include a version of Cramer's rule, and we find situations when equality holds, encompassing results by Akian, Gaubert, Guterman, Izhakian, Knebusch, and Rowen. We pay special attention to the question of whether $n+1$ vectors of length $n$ need be dependent. At the end, we introduce a category with stronger morphisms, that preserve a surpassing relation.

Abstract:In a classical paper by Ben-David and Magidor, a model of set theory was exhibited in which $\aleph_{\omega+1}$ carries a uniform ultrafilter that is $\theta$-indecomposable for every uncountable cardinal $\theta<\aleph_\omega$. In this paper, we give a global version of this result, as follows: Assuming the consistency of a supercompact cardinal, we produce a model of set theory in which for every singular cardinal $\lambda$, there exists a uniform ultrafilter on $\lambda^+$ that is $\theta$-indecomposable for every cardinal $\theta$ such that $cf(\lambda)<\theta<\lambda$. In our model, many instances of compactness for chromatic numbers hold, from which we infer that Hajnal's gap-1 counterexample to Hedetniemi's conjecture is best possible on the grounds of ZFC.

Abstract:It is proved that for every positive integer $n$, the number of non-Tukey-equivalent directed sets of cardinality $\leq \aleph_n$ is at least $c_{n+2}$, the $(n+2)$-Catalan number. Moreover, the Tukey class $\mathcal D_{\aleph_n} $ of directed sets of cardinality $\leq \aleph_n$ contains an isomorphic copy of the poset of Dyck $(n+2)$-paths. Furthermore, we give a complete description whether two successive elements in the copy contain another directed set in between or not.

Abstract:Let $1\leq p < \infty$ and $1\leq r \leq p^\ast$, where $p^\ast$ is the conjugate index of $p$. We prove an omnibus theorem, which provides numerous equivalences for a sequence $(x_n)$ in a Banach space $X$ to be a $(p,r)$-null sequence. One of them is that $(x_n)$ is $(p,r)$-null if and only if $(x_n)$ is null and relatively $(p,r)$-compact. This equivalence is known in the "limit" case when $r=p^\ast$, the case of the $p$-null sequence and $p$-compactness. Our approach is more direct and easier than those applied for the proof of the latter result. We apply it also to characterize the unconditional and weak versions of $(p,r)$-null sequences.

Abstract:We construct a compact Hausdorff space $K$ such that the space $P(K)$ of Radon probabiblity measures on $K$ considered with the weak$^*$ topology (induced from the space of continuous functions $C(K)$) is countably tight which is a generalization of sequentiality (i.e., if a measure $\mu$ is in the closure of a set $M$, there is a countable $M'\subseteq M$ such that $\mu$ is in the closure of $M'$) but $K$ carries a Radon probability measure which has uncountable Maharam type (i.e., $L_1(\mu)$ is nonseparable). The construction uses (necessarily) an additional set-theoretic assumption (the $\diamondsuit$ principle) as it was already known, by a result of Fremlin, that it is consistent that such spaces do not exist. This should be compared with the result of Plebanek and Sobota who showed that countable tightness of $P(K\times K)$ implies that all Radon measures on $K$ have countable type. So, our example shows that the tightness of $P(K\times K)$ and of $P(K)\times P(K)$ can be different as well as $P(K)$ may have Corson property (C) while $P(K\times K)$ fails to have it answering a question of Pol. Our construction is also a relevant example in the general context of injective tensor products of Banach spaces complementing recent results of Avilés, Martínez-Cervantes, Rodríguez and Rueda Zoca.

Abstract:The main goal of this paper is to generalize the results that where presented in [11] for $\aleph_1$-Kurepa trees to $\aleph_{\alpha+1}$-Kurepa trees. We construct an $\mathcal{L}_{\omega_1,\omega}$-sentence $\psi_{\alpha}$, that codes $\aleph_{\alpha+1}$-Kurepa trees, for some countable $\alpha$. One of the main results for its spectrum is the following: It is consistent that $2^{\aleph_{\alpha}}<2^{\aleph_{\alpha+1}}$, that $2^{\aleph_{\alpha+1}}$ is weakly inaccessible and that the spectrum of $\psi_{\alpha}$ is equal to $[\aleph_0, 2^{\aleph_{\alpha+1}})$. This relates to a conjecture of Shelah, that if $\aleph_{\omega_1}<2^{\aleph_0}$ and there is a model of some $\mathcal{L}_{\omega_1,\omega}$-sentence of size $\aleph_{\omega_1}$, then there is a model of size $2^{\aleph_0}$. Shelah calls $\aleph_{\omega_1}$ the local Hanf number below $2^{\aleph_0}$ and proves the consistency of his conjecture in [9]. It is open if the negation of Shelah's conjecture is consistent. Our result proves that if we replace $2^{\aleph_0}$ by $2^{\aleph_{\alpha+1}}$, it is consistent that there is no local Hanf number. There are some interesting results for the amalgamation spectrum too. We prove that $\kappa$-amalgamation for $\mathcal{L}_{\omega_1,\omega}$-sentences is not absolute. More specifically we prove for $\alpha>0$ finite, it is consistent that: 1) $2^{\aleph_{\alpha}} = \aleph_{\alpha+1}<\lambda \leq 2^{\aleph_{\alpha+1}}, cf(\lambda)>\aleph_{\alpha}$ and $AP-Spec(\psi_{\alpha})$ contains the whole interval $[\aleph_{\alpha+2}, \lambda]$ and possibly $\aleph_{\alpha+1}$. 2) $2^{\aleph_{\alpha}} = \aleph_{\alpha+1}<2^{\aleph_{\alpha+1}}$, $2^{\aleph_{\alpha+1}}$ is weakly inaccessible and $AP-Spec(\psi_{\alpha})$ contains the whole interval $[\aleph_{\alpha + 2}, 2^{\aleph_{\alpha+1}})$ and possibly $\aleph_{\alpha+1}$.

Abstract:The primary objective of this work is to construct spaces that are "pseudocompact but not countably compact," abbreviated as PNC, while endowing them with additional properties. First, motivated by an old problem of van Douwen, we construct from CH a locally compact and locally countable first countable PNC space with countable spread. A space is deemed "densely countably compact", denoted as DCC for brevity, if it possesses a dense, countable compact subspace. Moreover, a space qualifies as "densely relatively countably compact", abbreviated as DRC, if it contains a dense subset $D$ such that every infinite subset of $D$ has an accumulation point in $X$. A countably compact space is DCC, a DCC space is DRC, and a DRC space is evidently pseudocompact. The Tychonoff plank is a DCC space but is not countably compact. A $\Psi$-space belongs to the class of DRC spaces but is not DCC. Lastly, if $p\in {\omega}^*$ is not a P-point, then $T(p)$, representing the type of $p$ in ${\omega}^*$, constitutes a pseudocompact subspace of ${\omega}^*$ that is not \DRC. When considering a topological property denoted as $Q$, we define a space $X$ as "hereditarily $Q$" if every regular closed subspace of $X$ also possesses property $Q$. The Tychonoff plank and the $\Psi$-spaces are not hereditary examples. However, the aforementioned space $T(p)$ is a hereditary example, albeit not being first countable.

Abstract:Hjorth proved from $ZF + AD + DC$ that there is no sequence of distinct $\Sigma^1_2$ sets of length $\delta^1_2$. Sargsyan extended Hjorth's technique to show there is no sequence of distinct $\Sigma^1_{2n}$ sets of length $\delta^1_{2n}$. Sargsyan conjectured an analogous property is true for any regular Suslin pointclass in $L(R)$ -- i.e. if $\kappa$ is a regular Suslin cardinal in $L(R)$, then there is no sequence of distinct $\kappa$-Suslin sets of length $\kappa^+$ in $L(R)$. We prove this in the case that the pointclass $S(\kappa)$ is inductive-like.
