Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.
Fixed locus dimension of diagonalizable $p$-groups

Abstract:We obtain lower bounds for the dimension of fixed loci of abelian $p$-groups acting on smooth projective varieties. Those arise from modulo p Chern numbers, and are shown to be optimal. The bounds are expressed in a natural way by introducing an appropriate filtration on the modulo $p$ cobordism ring. They are obtained using equivariant localization methods, via the concentration theorem, and by a technique of "partition dividing".

Abstract:After recalling the notion of higher roots (or hyper-roots) associated with "quantum modules" of type $(G, k)$, for $G$ a semi-simple Lie group and $k$ a positive integer, following the definition given by A. Ocneanu in 2000, we study the theta series of their lattices. Here we only consider the higher roots associated with quantum modules (aka module-categories over the fusion category defined by the pair $(G,k)$) that are also "quantum subgroups". For $G=SU{2}$ the notion of higher roots coincides with the usual notion of roots for ADE Dynkin diagrams and the self-fusion restriction (the property of being a quantum subgroup) selects the diagrams of type $A_{r}$, $D_{r}$ with $r$ even, $E_6$ and $E_8$; their theta series are well known. In this paper we take $G=SU{3}$, where the same restriction selects the modules ${\mathcal A}_k$, ${\mathcal D}_k$ with $mod(k,3)=0$, and the three exceptional cases ${\mathcal E}_5$, ${\mathcal E}_9$ and ${\mathcal E}_{21}$. The theta series for their associated lattices are expressed in terms of modular forms twisted by appropriate Dirichlet characters.

Abstract:We study various naturally defined subvarieties of the moduli space ${\mathcal A}_g$ of complex principally polarized abelian varieties (ppav) in a neighborhood of the locus of products of $g$ elliptic curves. In this neighborhood, we obtain a local description for the locus of hyperelliptic curves, reproving the recent result of Shepherd-Barron that the hyperelliptic locus is locally given by tridiagonal matrices. We further reprove and generalize to arbitrary genus the recent result of Agostini and Chua showing that the locus of Jacobians of genus 5 curves with a theta-null is an irreducible component of the locus of ppav with a theta-null such that the singular locus of the theta divisor at the corresponding two-torsion point has tangent cone of rank at most 3. We further show that the locus of ppav such that the gradient vanishes, for some odd theta characteristic, locally has codimension $g$ near the diagonal. Finally, we obtain new results on the locus where the rank of the Hessian of the theta function at a two-torsion point that lies on the theta divisor is equal to 2.

Abstract:We consider the moduli space of genus 4 curves endowed with a $g<^>1_3$ (which maps with degree 2 onto the moduli space of genus 4 curves). We prove that it defines a degree $\frac {1}{2}(3<^>{10}-1)$ cover of the nine-dimensional Deligne-Mostow ball quotient such that the natural divisors that live on that moduli space become totally geodesic (their normalizations are eight-dimensional ball quotients). This isomorphism differs from the one considered by S. Kondo, and its construction is perhaps more elementary, as it does not involve K3 surfaces and their Torelli theorem: the Deligne-Mostow ball quotient parametrizes certain cyclic covers of degree 6 of a projective line and we show how a level structure on such a cover produces a degree 3 cover of that line with the same discriminant, yielding a genus 4 curve endowed with a $g<^>1_3$.

Abstract:This paper lays the foundation for determining the Kodaira dimension of the projectivized strata of Abelian differentials with prescribed zero and pole orders in large genus. We work with the moduli space of multi-scale differentials constructed in [BCGGM2] which provides an orbifold compactification of these strata. We establish the projectivity of the moduli space of multi-scale differentials, describe the locus of canonical singularities, and compute a series of effective divisor classes. Moreover, we exhibit a perturbation of the canonical class which allows the corresponding pluri-canonical forms to extend over the locus of non-canonical singularities. As applications, we certify general type for strata with few zeros as well as for strata with equidistributed zero orders when g is sufficiently large. In particular, we show general type for the odd spin components of the minimal strata for g > 12.

Abstract:The object of this paper is to study GL(2,R) orbit closures in hyperelliptic components of strata of abelian differentials. The main result is that all higher rank affine invariant submanifolds in hyperelliptic components are branched covering constructions, i.e. every translation surface in the affine invariant submanifold covers a translation surface in a lower genus hyperelliptic component of a stratum of abelian differentials. This result implies finiteness of algebraically primitive Teichmuller curves in all hyperelliptic components for genus greater than two. A classification of all GL(2, R) orbit closures in hyperelliptic components of strata (up to computing connected components and up to finitely many nonarithmetic rank one orbit closures) is provided. Our main theorem resolves a pair of conjectures of Mirzakhani in the case of hyperelliptic components of moduli space.
Local structure of theta divisors and related loci of generic curves

Abstract:For a generic compact Riemann surface the theta function is at every point on the Jacobian equal to its first Taylor term, up to a holomorphic change of local coordinates and multiplication by a local holomorphic unit. More generally, any Brill-Noether locus of twisted stable vector bundles on a smooth projective curve is at every point L locally étale isomorphic with its tangent cone if the Petri map at L is injective. This assumption has various consequences for Brill-Noether loci: positive answers to the monodromy conjecture for generalized theta divisors and to questions of Schnell-Yang on log resolutions and Whitney stratifications, and formulas for local b-functions, log canonical thresholds, topological zeta functions, and minimal discrepancies.

Abstract: We consider CFT's arising from branes probing singularities of internal manifolds. We focus on holographic models with internal space including arbtirary Sasaki-Einstein manifolds coming from CY as well as arbitrary sphere quotients. In all these cases we show that there is a universal upper bound (depending only on the spacetime dimension) for the conformal dimension of the first non-trivial spin 2 operator in the dual CFT and a minimal diameter (in AdS units) for the internal space of the holographic dual and conjecture it holds for all CFT's.

Abstract:We describe an extension at the level of the moduli space of stable spin curves of genus g of the map associating to an ineffective spin structure its Scorza curve (equivalently, the vanishing locus of its Szegő kernel). We compute the class of the Szegő-Hodge bundle, then find an unconditional new interpretation, in terms of theta constants, of the Scorza quartic uniquely associated to an even spin structure. Our results describe the superperiod map from the moduli space of supersymmetric curves in the neighborhood of the theta-null divisor and provide a lower bound for the slope of the movable cone of the moduli space of spin curves.

Abstract:We consider the expected value of $\mbox{Tr}(\Theta_C^n)$ where $C$ runs over a thin family of $r$-cyclic covers of $\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{F}_q}$ for any $r$. We obtain many lower order terms dependent on the divisors of $r$. We use these results to calculate the one-level density of the family and hypothesize a refined one-level density result.

Abstract:This research provides a formal definition of the arithmetic theta lift for cusp forms of weight $3/2$ and establishes the arithmetic inner product formula, thereby completing the Kudla program on modular curves. This formula is demonstrated to be equivalent to the Gross-Zagier formula, for which we provide a new proof. Additionally, the authors introduce a new arithmetic representation for the central derivatives of L-functions associated with cusp forms of higher weight. Although this representation differs from Zhang's higher weight Gross-Zagier formula, it maintains a significant connection to it. This study also proposes a conjecture indicating that the vanishing of derivatives of L-functions is determined by the algebraicity of the coefficients of harmonic weak Maass forms. A consistent approach is employed to study both parts of this work.

Abstract:In this paper we study asymptotic directions in the tangent bundle of the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_g$ of curves of genus $g$, namely those tangent directions that are annihilated by the second fundamental form of the Torelli map. We give examples of asymptotic directions for any $g \geq 4$. We prove that if the rank $d$ of a tangent direction $\zeta \in H^1(T_C)$ (with respect to the infinitesimal deformation map) is less than the Clifford index of the curve $C$, then $\zeta$ is not asymptotic. If the rank of $\zeta$ is equal to the Clifford index of the curve, we give sufficient conditions ensuring that the infinitesimal deformation $\zeta$ is not asymptotic. Then we determine all asymptotic directions of rank 1 and we give an almost complete description of asymptotic directions of rank 2.

Abstract:Let SU(r,d) be the moduli space of rank r, degree d vector bundles over a smooth projective curve of genus $g\ge 2$. If (r,d)=1 and d divides r+1, then SU is rational. Furthermore, if $0<\delta < r$ and all prime divisors of $\delta$ divide r, and if d divides $r-\delta$, then SU is rational. The proof is a variation on a result of Newstead and modifications due to Ballico and then Boden and Yokogawa.

Abstract:Browning and Vishe used the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to show the moduli space of rational curves on smooth hypersurfaces of low degree is irreducible and of the expected dimension. We reinterpret the circle method geometrically and prove a generalization for higher genus smooth projective curves. In particular, we explain how the geometry of numbers can be understood via the Beauville-Laszlo theorem in terms of vector bundles on curves and their slopes, allowing us to prove a higher genus variant of Davenport's shrinking lemma. As a corollary, we apply this result to show the Fujita invariant of any proper subvariety of a smooth hypersurface of low degree is less than 1.
