Abstract:Nonoxidative coupling of methane exhibits promising prospect in that it affords value-added hydrocarbons and hydrogen with high atom economy. However, challenge remains in direct, selective conversion of methane to more valuable hydrocarbons like olefins. The current work presents a catalyst with well-dispersed Ta atoms anchored by graphitic C3N4-supported phthalocyanine. Such a catalyst is able to convert methane selectively to ethylene and propylene at a relatively low temperature (350 °C). The conception of the active center and construction of the catalyst have been described, and the origins of the catalytic performance are discussed.

Abstract:The synthesis of 2, 4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane through the acetalization of isobutyraldehyde with 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) catalyzed by the novel carbon based acid was first carried out. High conversion (≥98%) and specific selectivity were obtained using the novel carbon based acid, which kept high activity after it was reused 5 times. Moreover, the catalyst could be used to catalyze the acetalization and ketalization of different aldehydes and ketones with superior yield. The yield of several products was over 90%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the distinct advantages of high activity, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the success of the green process greatly.

Abstract:The direct and selective conversion of syngas into C2+ oxygenates is challenging due to the complex reaction network. Here, we report a robust relay system for the direct synthesis of methyl acetate (MA) from syngas, which combines CuZnAlOx/H‐ZSM‐5 for syngas to dimethyl ether (DME) with modified H‐MOR for DME carbonylation. The dehydration of methanol to DME on H‐ZSM‐5 significantly enhanced the hydrogenation of CO on CuZnAlOx, because of high DME equilibrium yields. Blocking of Brönsted acid sites with basic molecules or selective dealumination of 12‐membered rings in H‐MOR suppressed the zeolite coking. Besides, reaction temperatures above 240°C avoided H2O poisoning of carbonylation sites inside 8‐MR side pockets of H‐MOR, further benefiting the catalytic stability. Eventually, this relay system provided a high MA selectivity of 75% and an acetic acid selectivity of 13% at a CO conversion of 65%, outperforming reported catalysts.

Abstract:Selective conversion of syngas (CO/H-2) into C2+ oxygenates is a highly attractive but challenging target. Herein, we report the direct conversion of syngas into methyl acetate (MA) by relay catalysis. MA can be formed at a lower temperature (ca. 473K) using Cu-Zn-Al oxide/H-ZSM-5 and zeolite mordenite (H-MOR) catalysts separated by quartz wool (denoted as Cu-Zn-Al/H-ZSM-5 vertical bar H-MOR) and also at higher temperatures (603-643K) without significant deactivation using spinel-structured ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR. The selectivity of MA and acetic acid (AA) reaches 87% at a CO conversion of 11% at 643K. Dimethyl ether (DME) is the key intermediate and the carbonylation of DME results in MA with high selectivity. We found that the relay catalysis using ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR vertical bar ZnAl2O4 gives ethanol as the major product, while ethylene is formed with a layer-by-layer ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR vertical bar ZnAl2O4 vertical bar H-MOR combination. Close proximity between ZnAl2O4 and H-MOR increases ethylene selectivity to 65%.

Abstract:The precise C-C coupling is a challenging goal in C1 chemistry. The conversion of methanol, a cheap and easily available C1 feedstock, into value-added and largely demanded olefins has been playing a game-changing role in the production of olefins. The current methanol-to-olefin (MTO) process, however, suffers from limited selectivity to a specific olefin. Here, we present a relay-catalysis route for the high-selective conversion of methanol to ethylene in syngas (H2/CO) typically used for methanol synthesis. A bifunctional catalyst composed of selectively dealuminated H-MOR zeolite and ZnO-TiO2, which implemented methanol carbonylation with CO to acetic acid and selective acetic acid hydrogenation to ethylene in tandem, offered ethylene selectivity of 85% at complete methanol conversion at 583 K. The selective removal of Brønsted acid sites in the 12-membered ring channel of H-MOR favors the selectivity of acetic acid in CH3OH carbonylation. The high capabilities of ZnO-TiO2 in the adsorption of acetic acid and the activation of H2 play key roles in selective hydrogenation of acetic acid to ethylene. Our work provides a promising relay-catalysis strategy for precise C-C coupling of C1 to C2 molecules.

Abstract:Substituted mesoporous MCM-41 materials and transition-metal-free oxides were prepared and tested as heterogeneous catalysts for the direct conversion of trioses to lactates. This is a reaction of growing interest in the field of production of valuable chemicals from renewable sources. Very high selectivity towards the desired lactate product was achieved with gallium oxide and with the ordered mesoporous material Sn-MCM-41. The latter catalyst was also very active and gave complete conversion after 6 h of reaction. The excellent catalytic performance of Sn-MCM-41 is ascribed to a combination of strong Lewis acid sites and mild Bronsted acid sites, as shown by monitoring pyridine adsorption on the catalyst surface with FT-IR spectroscopy. The catalytic results obtained with Sn-MCM-41 in the conversion of dihydroxyacetone to ethyl lactate are unsurpassed among the heterogeneous catalysts reported so far for this reaction.

Abstract:A series of mesoporous Ta and Ta-W oxides have been prepared and employed as solid acid catalysts for the dehydration of fructose and glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Solid state 31P MAS NMR spectroscopic results using trimethylphosphine (TMP) as a probe molecule show that the acid strength and the ratio of Brönsted to Lewis acid sites increase gradually with the addition of tungsten in tantalum oxide. It is found that high sugar conversion and HMF selectivity are achieved over catalyst with relatively high ratios of Brönsted to Lewis acid sites. Unexpected stoichiometric excess of formic acid relative to levulinic acid can be observed mainly because of direct decomposition of fructose over Lewis acid sites. The addition of 2-butanol leads to the increase of sugars conversion and the HMF selectivity, especially for the catalyst with high ratio of Brönsted to Lewis acid sites. Among them, Ta7W3 oxide catalyst shows 54% HMF selectivity and good reusability with the addition of 2-butanol by extracting HMF from aqueous phase and removing humins deposed on the surface of the catalyst.

Abstract:Glycerol is selectively converted to hydroxyacetaldehyde (HAA) and H-2 in aqueous solution on TiO2-based photocatalysts. The product selectivity was verified to be strongly dependent on the facets of TiO2. Rutile with high percentage of {110} facets results in over 90% superior selectivity of HAA, while anatase with {001} or {101} facets gives only 16% and 49% selectivity for HAA, respectively.

Abstract:The unique high-throughput technology and apparatus were applied to research and development of zeolite catalysts for conversion of methanol into propylene(MTP) with high activity and selectivity.The effects of Si/Al ratio and crystal size of ZSM-5 zeolite on catalytic performance were studied.The acidity and diffusivity of the catalysts were optimized with different methods,including ion-exchange,oxide doping and alkali treatment.A propylene yield of≈42%and a lifetime of more than 700 h with 100%conversion of methanol are achieved with a 60%methanol/H_2O feed at 470℃and WHSV=2 h(?)using Yashen MTP catalysts.

Abstract:In the present work, a series of ordered mesoporous titanium phosphate (M-TiPO) materials with controllable composition are prepared by a simple one-pot method. The introduced Ti and P species are homogeneously dispersed in the skeleton of M-TiPO. Moreover, the influence of P content in mesoporous structure and existing states of Ti species is detailedly discussed. The result shows that the mesoporous structure is successfully improved by the introduction of P species. The M-TiPO-0.5 material (P/Ti=0.5) exhibits outstanding textural properties (specific surface area (215 m(2)center dot g(-1)), pore size (6.6 nm) and volume (0.34 cm(3)center dot g(-1))). Also, with the increasing of P species, the crystalline structure of mesoporous skeleton gradually changes from anatase TiO2 to amorphous phase, and the bonds in the materials transfer from Ti-O-Ti to Ti-O-P. The electron density of Ti decreases, and the acidic property is gradually enhanced. The gotten M-TiPO samples are utilized as catalyst for acetalization of glycerol with acetone. The M-TiPO-0.75 with excellent textural and acidic properties exhibits the best catalytic effect (the glycerol conversion is 91.3% and the acetal selectivity is 94.7%). More importantly, the M-TiPO-0.75 solid acid catalyst shows attractive reusability, and there is no decline in catalytic activity even after ten cycles. Consequently, M-TiPO material is a promising catalyst for the acetalization of glycerol.

Abstract:As an important catalyst of methanol-to-propylene (MTP) conversion, the ZSM-5 zeolite has an anisotropic diffusion path and a large pore size, resulting in the formation of undesirable heavy aromatic by-products. Herein, we developed a surface-specific silica deposition method to block straight channels of nanosized ZSM-5 crystals selectively. By such a coating method, we can selectively suppress the yield of aromatics from the original 13% to 2.4% at 100% conversion of methanol. Trapped hydrocarbon pool species are directly confirmed by aberration-corrected S/TEM for the first time. Such a method of trapping and restricting hydrocarbon pool species in a multiscale zeolite with 10-membered rings would significantly increase its catalytic efficiency and olefin diffusion. Moreover, this provides new methodologies for zeolite structure construction and will be greatly beneficial for the industrial MTP process.

Abstract:Direct conversion of syngas to light olefins using bifunctional catalysts containing both oxides and zeolites represents a promising alternative in comparison with Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. It is still a great challenge to achieve highly selective production of ethylene and propylene at a satisfying CO conversion for potentially industrial applications. Here, we report that a high selectivity to ethylene and propylene can be achieved by tailoring silicoaluminophosphate zeolite structure and acid site strength. By comparing bifunctional catalysts composed of ZnCr oxide and different zeolites with 8-membered ring openings, we achieve the total selectivity of 76.4% in ethylene and propylene at a CO conversion as high as 38.2% by catalysts containing SAPO-17 zeolite (ERI framework). The detailed hydrocarbon distribution is nearly identical to that in the methanol-to-olefins reaction. The high selectivity can be rationalized due to both smaller 8-membered ring openings and the weaker Bronsted acid strength of SAPO-17 zeolites.

Abstract:Selective synthesis of higher oxygenates from syngas is an important but challenging research target, and the present methods for converting syngas into oxygenates suffer from low selectivity and high energy consumption in multiple processes. Herein, we report a tandem catalyst composed of carbon-supported CoMn and Rh-metalated 3v-PPh3-based porous organic polymers (POPs), which can convert syngas to oxygenates with a selectivity of up to 62.7% and where the percentages of C2+ and C6+ oxygenates exceed 96.6 and 70.7%, respectively. The CoMn/modified activated carbon (MAC) works as a Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) catalyst to produce paraffins, olefins, and alcohols, and the Rh–P active site embedded on Rh/3v-PPh3@POPs serves as a heterogeneous hydroformylation catalyst to convert the obtained olefins into aldehydes. The present work puts forward an alternative strategy for the design of relay catalysts for the direct synthesis of higher oxygenates.

Abstract:Unexpectedly, L-proline/piperidine was found to be a better recyclable catalyst system than L-proline or piperidine alone in the condensation of acetone to prepare mesityl oxide (MO), an important intermediate in the chemical industry. Binding the catalyst system onto polymer resin enhanced the MO selectivity and reduced the catalyst loss. The mechanism of the bi-component catalyst system was also studied through control reactions, as well as by dynamic calculations. The MO selectivity could reach 74.4% and its isolated yield could reach 73.9%, based on the consumed acetone. Although the result does not immediately meet the requirement of industrial production, this study provides a novel organocatalyst system, which might offer a potential alternative to traditional inorganic catalysts that can be used under mild and neutral conditions.

Abstract:Selectivity control in the single-step conversion of syngas to a single aromatic product is a big challenge. Here, we report an aldol-aromatic mechanism composed of aldol, phenolic, and aromatic cycles, that gave high selectivity >70% of a single product, tetramethylbenzene (TeMB) in hydrocarbons, at a reaction temperature as low as 275 degrees C. We evidently found the existence of oxygenated-aromatic compounds in the carbon pool, which remained active throughout the reaction and acted as key intermediates for the formation of the aromatics. The physical contact of ZnCr2O4 with H-ZSM-5 exhibited a strong coupling effect that promoted surface diffusion of C-1 oxygenates (i.e., formaldehyde and methanol) from ZnCr2O4 into H-ZSM-5 and transformed into aromatics via an aldol-aromatic reaction pathway, thus overcoming the most difficult step for first carbon-carbon bond formation. In addition, ZnCr2O4 promoted the aromatics desorption by lowering the desorption activation energy and prevented the oversaturation of carbon pool species. Furthermore, it was found that a combination of thermodynamic equilibrium, surface methylation, and static repulsion are the key factors for giving high selectivity of TeMB in both carbon pool and final aromatics. This aldol-aromatic mechanism will open an efficient reaction pathway to upscale the process for selective aromatic synthesis in high yield from syngas.

Abstract:HZSM-5 is a widely used catalyst for the conversion of methanol to aromatics (MTA), but its single micropore system often results in severe diffusion limitations, leading to the decrease of reaction rate and the change of selectivity to aromatics, as well as affecting the carbon deposition and catalyst deactivation. Thus, an ingenious protective desiliconization method with a mixed solution of sodium hydroxide and tetrapropylammonium hydroxide as a desiliconization agent was developed to create hierarchical porous systems without destruction of the main structure of the molecular sieve. Such modification leads to the greatly increased mesoporous volume from 0.12 to 0.38 cm(3) g(-1), and only slightly decreased microporous volume from 0.12 to 0.09 cm(3) g(-1). However, the desiliconization sharply increases the acidity of the catalyst (from 0.248 to 0.341 mmol g(-1) for the strong acid sites), which may significantly affect the distribution of aromatics and accelerate the carbon deposition rate. Thus, the deposition of inert SiO2 on the catalyst surface is subsequently carried out to passivate the surface acidity and adjust the orifice of the catalyst. Accordingly, a hierarchical porous HZSM-5 molecular sieve catalyst (Si@Z5-Na + TP) with suitable acidity is precisely prepared, which exhibits the high selectivity to benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTX) with the excellent anticoking ability in the MTA reaction. The selectivity to BTX in aromatics (63.32%) and the carbon deposition rate (0.91 mg g(cat)(-1) h(-1)) over the Si@Z5-Na + TP catalyst are both much more superior than those over the parent HZSM-5 catalyst (47.5% and 2.23 mg g(cat)(-1) h(-1), respectively).
