Abstract:An ultra-broadband selective absorber has been realized with a hierarchical structure through integrating vacuum impedance matched structure, quarter wavelength structure and gradient refractive index structure. Through optimizing the design parameters of the proposed hierarchical structure, an ultra-broadband infrared absorber covering three major atmospheric windows (0.7~2.5 μm, 3~5 μm and 8~14 μm) has been numerically and experimentally demonstrated. An overall absorption up to 80% covering all the three major atmospheric infrared windows and a ratio of the total absorptions within and beyond the windows as high as 5.88, has been achieved with the developed absorber. The high absorption and spectral selectivity of the absorber make it promising for sensitive broadband infrared spectroscopy detection. The proposed hierarchical structure also provides great design freedom with many tunable factors, making it convenient to extend the design for other applications. In addition, we developed a cost-effective lithography-free method for the fabrication of this structure. The design flexibility and fabrication convenience of this hierarchical structure render it suitable for the development of tailored selective broadband absorbers for targeted applications.
Exploring Long-Wave Infrared Transmitting Materials with A(X)B(Y) Form: First-Principles Gene-Like Studies

Abstract:Long-wave infrared (8–12 μm) transmitting materials play critical roles in space science and electronic science. However, the paradox between their mechanical strength and infrared transmitting performance seriously prohibits their applications in harsh external environment. From the experimental view, searching a good window material compatible with both properties is a vast trail-and-error engineering project, which is not readily achieved efficiently. In this work, we propose a very simple and efficient method to explore potential infrared window materials with suitable mechanical property by first-principles gene-like searching. Two hundred and fifty-three potential materials are evaluated to find their bulk modulus (for mechanical performance) and phonon vibrational frequency (for optical performance). Seven new potential candidates are selected, namely TiSe, TiS, MgS, CdF2, HgF2, CdO and SrO. Especially, the performances of TiS and CdF2 can be comparable to that of the most popular commercial ZnS at high temperature. Finally, we propose possible ranges of infrared transmission for halogen, chalcogen and nitrogen compounds respectively to guide further exploration. The present strategy to explore IR window materials can significantly speed up the new development progress. The same idea can be used for other material rapid searching towards special functions and applications.
Synthesis, structure and characterizations of Cd2TeO3Cl2 with unprecedented [Cd2O6Cl4] octahedral dimers

Abstract:A new mixed anionic compound Cd2TeO3Cl2 with unprecedented [Cd2O6Cl4] octahedral dimers has been synthesized, and millimeter-scale single crystals of Cd2TeO3Cl2 have been grown by vertical Bridgman method with CdCl2 as the flux. Cd2TeO3Cl2 crystallizes in the centrosymmetric P (no.2) space group, and shows a mixed cationic layer structure constituted by distorted [TeO3] motifs, and mixed anionic [Cd2O6Cl4] chains, [Cd2O6Cl4] octahedral dimers. Experimental and theoretical results show that Cd2TeO3Cl2 is a direct band gap compound with an experimental band of ~ 4.25 eV. Meanwhile, the compound has a good optical transmittance in the 3-5 μm atmospheric window. The results indicate that Cd2TeO3Cl2 could be used as a promising mid-IR window material, and enrich the chemical and structural diversity of oxides.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a glass-based double-side cascade film stack structure for visible-infrared ultrabroadband absorption. The proposed structure demonstrates an average absorption as high as ∼95% over an ultrawide range of wavelengths from 0.4 μm to 20 μm. The high absorption feature of the different bandgap materials is applied in this absorption device to realize the ultrabroadband absorption, combining with the metal-dielectric-like configuration for those unmatched-admittance wavelengths and the graded index profile arrangement for the 0.4–2.5 μm band. The proposed ultrabroadband absorber shows a great angular tolerance up to 60° with the average absorption of 90% remaining. The proposed approach can have tremendous potential in fields of optical sensing, camouflage, optical imaging, passive cooling, and sustainable power generation, profiting from the good mechanical characteristics of this compact multilayer film structure and the low manufacture costs with the simple physical vapor deposition.
A Dye-Sensitized Visible Light Photocatalyst-Bi 24 O 31 Cl 10

Abstract:The p -block semiconductors are regarded as a new family of visible-light photocatalysts because of their dispersive and anisotropic band structures as well as high chemical stability. The bismuth oxide halides belong to this family and have band structures and dispersion relations that can be engineered by modulating the stoichiometry of the halogen elements. Herein, we have developed a new visible-light photocatalyst Bi 24 O 31 Cl 10 by band engineering, which shows high dye-sensitized photocatalytic activity. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the p -block elements determine the nature of the dispersive electronic structures and narrow band gap in Bi 24 O 31 Cl 10 . Bi 24 O 31 Cl 10 exhibits excellent visible-light photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of Rhodamine B, which is promoted by dye sensitization due to compatible energy levels and high electronic mobility. In addition, Bi 24 O 31 Cl 10 is also a suitable photoanode material for dye-sensitized solar cells and shows power conversion efficiency of 1.5%.
A Study on a Ka-Band Power Window with Thicker Ceramics

Abstract:An innovative Ka-band power window with thicker ceramics is proposed,where the thickness of the window ceramics is three times thicker than that of those used in traditional structure and is hence more robust.Both the computer simulation and the test data have proved that the new window has reflection ratios lower than 0.2 within 27.5～40 GHz and lower than 0.1 near the center frequency.The computer simulation also demonstrates that the new window works well in W-band,and its thicker window ceramics makes it easier to be gas-tight.

Abstract:Alignment layer plays a critical role on liquid crystal (LC) conformation for most LC devices. Normally, polyimide (PI) or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), characterized by their outstanding thermal and electrical properties, have been widely applied as the alignment layer to align LC molecules. Here, we used a semi-conductive material poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) as the alignment layer to fabricate the cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) device and the polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLC)-based infrared (IR) reflectors. In the presence of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, there are hole–electron pairs generated in the PVK layer, which neutralizes the impurity electrons in the LC–PVK junction, resulting in the reduction in the built-in electric field in the LC device. Therefore, the operational voltage of the CLC device switching from cholesteric texture to focal conic texture decreases from 45 V to 30 V. For the PSCLC-based IR reflectors with the PVK alignment layer, at the same applied electric field, the reflection bandwidth is enhanced from 647 to 821 nm, ranging from 685 to 1506 nm in the IR region, which makes it attractive for saving energy as a smart window.

Abstract:A new noncentrosymmetric cadmium indium borate, Cd4InO(BO3)3 (CIBO) has been successfully developed via a standard solid-state reaction. Its crystal structure was confirmed by the single crystal X-ray diffraction, which shows that CIBO belongs to the non-centrosymmetric and polar space group Cm. Its structure contains the distorted InO6 and CdOn (n = 6, 8) polyhedra, which link together by sharing an edge or corner to build a three dimensions framework with BO3 triangles accommodated in tunnels. Benefiting from the approximately parallel configuration of BO3 triangles, CIBO exhibited a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) effect (3 × KDP), and moderate birefringence of 0.077@1064 nm. Further optical and thermal characterizations suggest that CIBO possesses a wide transparent window and good thermal stability. Theoretical calculation reveals that the macroscopic SHG coefficients of CIBO results from the synergistic effect of the parallel arrangement of BO3 groups and d10 Cd2+ cation.

Abstract:Dynamic infrared radiation regulation has been widely explored for smart windows because of its vital importance for comfortable and energy-efficient buildings. However, it remains a great challenge to synchronously achieve high visible transmittance and pronounced infrared tunability. Here, we propose a dynamic infrared tunable metamaterial composed of indium tin oxide (ITO) gratings, an air insulator, and an ITO reflector. The ITO grating-based infrared radiation regulator exhibits a high emissivity tunability of 0.73 at 8-13 μm while maintaining a high visible transmittance of 0.65 and 0.72 before and after actuation, respectively. By adjusting the geometric parameters, the tunable bandwidth can be further extended to 3-30 μm and the ultra-broadband tunability reaches 0.62. The excellent infrared tunable performance arises from the insulator thickness-dependent effect of Fabry-Pérot and propagating surface plasmon resonance coupling and decoupling, which lead to perfect and low absorption, respectively. This work provides potential for the advancement of smart window technology and makes a significant contribution to sustainable buildings.

Abstract:This study is dedicated to the development of a new type of cesium tungsten bronze energy-saving laminated glass and explores its application in insulating glass combinations, offering innovative ideas and practical solutions for advancing energy-saving glass technology. Experimental results show that both CsxWO3 (CWO) dispersions exhibit good visible light transmittance and near-infrared shielding properties, with CWO1 demonstrating superior shielding in the 650–950 nm range, attributed to differences in shape and size distribution and verified by simulations using the Drude–Lorentz model and the finite element method.

Abstract:Heat management and color appearance are the key issues for the application of smart windows. Herein, a vibrant colored energy-saving polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film has been designed by combining dye-doping and the application of a heat shielding electrode. The LC droplet size could be varied by tuning the content of the dye. PDLC films featuring a low Disperse Orange 25 Azo dye concentration (0.06%) achieving an impressive contrast ratio of up to 101.5 with the transmittance reaching 79.17% at on state. Furthermore, indium tin oxide (ITO) and aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) were chosen as the conductive layer materials, and the heat shielding properties of ITO and AZO/Ag/ITO (AAI) films were applied to PDLC devices and comparatively investigated. The AAI-based devices exhibited temperature reductions of 2 °C and 4 °C compared to the ITO-based devices at off and on states, respectively. This highlights the remarkable heat shielding performance and energy-saving capability of AAI-PDLC devices, as well as good flexibility and cycle stability. These AAI-based colored PDLC films exhibit substantial potential for smart window applications especially in buildings and automotive industry.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides have attracted considerable attention due to their interesting chemical variability and structure–property flexibility, with remarkable multifunctional properties, including tunable physical, chemical, optical, and electronic properties. However, with the continuous development and change of the social environment, the demand for multifunctional materials is more urgent. In this paper, a new low-dimensional cadmium-based hybrid metal halide multifunctional material with high temperature reversible phase transition is reported: [(CH2CH3)3NCH2Cl]2CdBr4 (1), which exhibits an ultrahigh temperature reversible phase transition at Tc = 421 K variable, and has semiconductor and photoluminescence multifunctional materials. This will stimulate further interest in molecular materials with desirable multifunctional properties.

Pb2TeV2O10: A Lead Vanadate Tellurate with Wide Mid-IR Transparency and Large Birefringence Induced by Multiple Birefringence-Active Groups

Abstract:Birefringent materials as the key materials in laser science and technology have attracted continuous attention due to their ability to modulate polarized light. Herein, a new lead vanadate tellurate, Pb2TeV2O10, has been synthesized through the rational integration of different kinds of birefringence-active functional units. Pb2TeV2O10 features a unique two-dimensional (2D) [TeV2O10]∞ layered structure consisting of [VO6]7- and [TeO6]6- octahedra, and Pb2+ cations reside between the [TeV2O10]∞ layers. In addition, the rare edge-sharing mode of [VO6]7- and [TeO6]6- octahedra was found in this structure. Attributed to the high polarizability and appropriate arrangement of PbO8, VO6, and TeO6 units, Pb2TeV2O10 possesses a great theoretical birefringence of 0.275 at 532 nm, which is the largest among the vanadate tellurate family. The spectral tests also prove that Pb2TeV2O10 showcases a broad transparency window (439 nm-10 μm), covering an important mid-infrared (IR) atmospheric window (3-5 μm). In addition, in order to improve the transparency, alkali and alkaline earth metal cations were introduced by the substitution strategy, and then the compound K2Sr2Te2O9 was synthesized. It owns a shorter ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge of 234 nm and a wider transparency window (234 nm-13.8 μm). The findings of Pb2TeV2O10 and K2Sr2Te2O9 enrich the structure chemistry of the tellurate family and provide new insights for designing new compounds with large optical anisotropy and wide spectral transparency.
Indium Tin Oxide as a Dual-band Compatible Stealth Material with Low Infrared Emissivity and Strong Microwave Absorption

Abstract:With the explosive development of modern military detection technology, stealth compatibility for materials with both outstanding microwave absorption (MA) and low infrared emissivity is urgently needed. In this paper, indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles with high-efficiency MA and infrared stealth properties were successfully prepared by a steerable method using metal chloride salts as indium and tin sources, and the influence of tin proportion on their structure and properties was discussed. The prepared ITO nanoparticles possess abundant carriers and defects, are beneficial to construct a proper conducting network, and the polarization process is enhanced by the existence of homogeneous and heterogeneous interface, so that strong absorption is generated. Remarkably, the obtained ITO with a single dielectric loss type can realize an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 4.88 GHz with a matching thickness of 2.8 mm. In addition, ITO-5 has the lowest infrared emissivity (0.62) in the range of 3–14 μm, while ITO-10 exhibits the best infrared/radar compatible stealth effect. The lowest reflection loss and widest EAB for ITO-10 are separately –20.07 dB and 3.83 GHz, while the infrared emissivity is 0.64. Therefore, ITO shows a broad application prospect in anti-detection, and provides an option for the multispectral compatible stealth.

Abstract:Highly robust, swiftly reversible thermochromic nature of a two-dimensional (2D) perovskite of (PDMA)(CH3NH3)(n-1)PbnI3n+1, nominally prepared as n = 2 is found, where PDMA = C6H4(CH2NH3)(2). A wide band gap variation from 700 to 430 nm is observed between room temperature and >60 degrees C under ambient conditions, resulting from moisture absorption and desorption. X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy are performed to analyze the hydrated and dehydrated states. Furthermore, the (PDMA)(CH3NH3)(n-1)PbnI3n+1 film is demonstrated as an active material for smart windows and thermochromic solar cells, which could lower the inside air temperature in an enclosed space and supply a power conversion efficiency of more than 0.5% at a high ambient temperature, respectively. Overall, we may pave a pathway for exploring the novel phenomena and applications of Dion-Jacobson 2D perovskites.
Thermal Infrared And Broadband Microwave Stealth Glass Windows Based On Multi-Band Optimization

Abstract:With the rapid development of detection technologies, compatible stealth in the infrared and radar ranges has become increasingly essential not only for military application but also for personal privacy protection. In this study, we design a metamaterial window that possesses stealth ability in both the thermal infrared and broadband microwave ranges, using a particle swarm optimization algorithm to realize multi-band optimization. We experimentally verify that the proposed structure can achieve over 90% microwave absorption in the range 5.1 to 19.2 GHz (covering the X and Ku bands), with low infrared emissivity (similar to 0.15), and also maintain visible transmittance above 60%. Moreover, the window retains good performance up to 200 degrees C owing to the intrinsic properties of the material. Our multi-band optimization method enables the application of the transparent metamaterial windows in electromagnetic shielding and stealth and can potentially be applied in smart window related industries. Abstract:Transparent windows that insulate against infrared light and heat entering buildings hold the promise of reducing energy consumption. However, a long-standing challenge for energy-saving window materials is to concurrently achieve a large tuning of refractive index, broad transmission modulation, and near-room-temperature phase transition. Here, we report the insulation of heat and infrared radiation by using a functionally graded transparent nanocomposite consisting of a hollow network-nanoparticle hybrid. We demonstrate ΔT of 6.9°C by combining the light-reflectance properties of metallic nanoparticles and the thermal insulation of hollow shell networks, resulting in an equivalent cooling power of 396 W/m2 under a light intensity of 3 W/cm2. This flexible nanocomposite sheet shows a high transparency of 91.0%, low haze in the visible region, and a modulus of 160 MPa. The gradient nanocomposites combine UV light blocking, visible transparency, and infrared light shielding, potentially opening a new avenue for energy-saving building window applications.
Development of Advanced Solid-State Thermochromic Materials for Responsive Smart Window Applications

Abstract:This study introduces the synthesis and detailed characterization of a novel thermochromic material capable of reversible alterations in its thermotropic transmittance. Through an emulsion polymerization process, this newly developed material is composed of 75–85% octadecyl acrylate and 0–7% allyl methacrylate, demonstrating a pronounced discoloration effect across a narrow yet critical temperature range of 24.5–39 °C. The synthesized powder underwent a battery of tests, including differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, as well as scanning electron microscopy. These comprehensive evaluations confirmed the material's exceptional thermal stability, uniform particle size distribution, and strong anchoring properties. Building upon these findings, we advanced the development of thermochromic polyvinyl butyral films and laminated glass products. By utilizing a coextrusion technique, we integrated these films into laminated glass, setting a new benchmark against existing glass technologies. Remarkably, the incorporation of thermochromic PVB films into laminated glass led to a significant reduction in solar irradiance of 20–30%, outperforming traditional double silver low-emissivity glass. This achievement demonstrates the exceptional shading and thermal insulation properties of the material. The research presented herein not only pioneers a valuable methodology for the engineering of smart materials with tunable thermotropic transmittance but also holds the key to unlocking enhanced energy efficiency across a spectrum of applications. The potential impact of this innovation on the realm of sustainable building materials is profound, promising significant strides toward energy conservation and environmental stewardship.

Abstract:Transparent variable infrared emissivity devices (VED) with high solar irradiation transmittance (0.75) and high infrared emissivity regulation (0.42) have been successfully prepared with ITO/SiO2/ITO structures through the fine‐design of several elements such as high carrier mobility, low conductivity range, and Fabry‐Perot resonant cavities. Moreover, the photothermal modulator constructed by the VED can independently regulate the visible transmittance and infrared emissivity. Smart windows that incorporate photothermal modulators (PMs) can independently regulate solar transmittance and infrared (IR) emissivity to improve building comfort and reduce energy consumption. Herein, a novel all‐solid‐state variable IR emissivity device (VED) is first designed and fabricated with a high visible irradiation transmittance (T′vis = 0.79) and solar irradiation transmittance (T′sol = 0.75) using an ITO/SiO2/ITO Fabry–Perot cavity structure. The VED exhibits different IR emissivity (ɛ) values at positive (ɛP = 0.80) and negative (ɛN = 0.38) bias, allowing for dynamic regulation of radiation by controlling the electrical conductivity of the indium tin oxide (ITO) layer. Furthermore, an all‐solid‐state PM with a structure of ITO/SiO2/ITO/Glass/ITO/NiO/ZrO2/Li/WO3/ITO, which is capable of independently regulating solar transmittance (ΔT'sol = 0.31) and IR emissivity (Δɛ2.5–25 μm = 0.42), is fabricated. The multi‐mode smart window incorporating PMs can achieve "bright," "dark," "warm," and "cool" modes, making them suitable for deployment in diverse climate zones. The innovative smart window holds a massive potential for use in reducing building energy consumption.

Abstract:A polymeric liquid crystalline film was fabricated by photo-induced diffusion and mesogenic phase structural transition of photopolymerisable acrylate monomer mixtures that presented phase transition between cholesteric (Ch) and smectic (SmA) phases. By controlling the curing temperature to be close to SmA-Ch phase transition, a novel architecture that combined Ch and SmA-like short-range ordering (SSO) nanostructures was obtained, which reflected light with the wavelength from 0.5 to 11.5 mu m. Experimental results showed that the existence of UV-absorbing dye and curing temperature were critical for the creation of asymmetrical super wide pitch gradient distribution. Moreover, the reflection wavelength and bandwidth of the cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) films were tuneable by adjusting proportion of the compounds, and the bandwidth could be broadened up to 13 mu m. It was expected to have great potential applications in fields like architectural energy conservation or infrared-stealth.[GRAPHICS].
