Abstract:In situ small-spot U-Pb geochronology is essential for measuring zircon crystals containing micrometre-scale heterogeneities, abundant inclusions, inevitable cracks and narrow growth zones, all of which are especially common in metamorphic zircons. We present a high spatial resolution (<= 10 mu m diameter) laser ablation-multi-collector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) U-Pb dating method using a Nu Plasma II mass spectrometer coupled with a GeoLas HD laser ablation system, which is capable of analysing zircon crystals with a wide range of U contents through two analytical modes (mixed-mode for 10 mu m ablation and IC-mode for 5 mu m ablation). We examined Pb/U down-hole fractionation (DHF) as a function of different laser settings under small-spot ablation, and how it controls the accuracy and precision of U-Pb ages of zircon reference materials. After DHF correction using Iolite software (version 3.71), five measurement sessions (with different laser fluence and/or laser pulse settings) for the two analytical modes yielded accurate and precise U-Pb ages for four zircon reference materials (Plesovice, 91500, GJ-1 and Temora-2). Further determinations of U-Pb ages of three metamorphic zircon samples (similar to 14 to 2000 Ma) from the Himalaya, North China Craton and North Qaidam were conducted, the results of which confirm the effectiveness and feasibility of this small-spot ablation method for natural zircons with multiple growth zones.

Abstract:Simultaneously in-situ analysis for more than 25 trace elements and U-Pb and Pb-Pb ages in single zircons using the LAM-ICPMS technique was successfully achieved. The precision and accuracy of analysis are 5-15% for most trace elements, 1-3% for 207Pb/206Pb isotopic ratios, and 2-8% for 206Pb/238U ratios. This combined geochemical and geochronological investigation has significant implications to studying zircons with complicated geological histories.

Abstract:A method for quasi-simultaneous determination of U-Pb ages and Hf isotope compositions on a single zircon spot is developed, by use of a multiple-collector ICPMS coupled with an excimer laser-ablation system. The ICPMS used in this study is equipped with variable zoom lens to change the dispersion of the analyzer and bring ion beams into the collector coincidentally. This feature allows rapid switching between U-Pb and Hf collector configuration, which is used to quasi-simultaneously determine the zircon U-Pb and Hf isotope compositions. The analytical results on three reference zircon standards, 91500, CZ3 and Plesovice and one nature zircon sample, agree with literature/known values, thereby demonstrating feasibility of the method.

Abstract:The techniques of site-directed and in-situ dating should meet two requirements.It must accurately give age value and endow with definite geological meaning. The first one can be resolved by development of modern apparatus and testing methods.While the second drives people to attach importance to the study of crystal chemistry of minerals. This paper suggests the developing possibility of chemical dating technique of EPMA and/or μ-PIXE with high spatial resolution and the non-destructive character by comparison with all other microprobe techniques, and elucidates the methods of crystal chemical study of minerals and their important function for site-directed and in-situ dating on a micrometer-scale. Then it presents an example of implication for microbeam analytical results of apparent ages and crystal chemical features of zircon from Huangtuling granulite in North Dabie Mountains.It shows that zircon is of polygenetic due to complex geological events, and the granulite-facies metamorphism was reliably confirmed at 2.050 Ga.

Abstract:This paper reports new developments in in situ U–Pb zircon geochronology using 266 and 213 nm laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Standard spot ablation (spot diameters 40–80 μm) was employed, with no sampling strategies employed specifically to minimise elemental fractionation. Instead, He ablation gas and carefully replicated ablation conditions were employed to maintain constant ablation-related elemental fractionation of Pb and U between analyses. Combining these strategies with calibration on a new zircon standard (GJ-1) allows elemental fractionation and instrumental mass bias to be corrected efficiently, and accurate 206Pb/238U and 207Pb/235U ratios to be measured with short-term precision (2 r.s.d.) of 1.9% and 3.0%, respectively. Long-term precision (2 r.s.d.) of the technique (266 nm ablation), based on 355 analyses of the 91500 zircon (1065 Ma) standard over more than a year, was 3.8%, 4.0% and 1.4% for the 206Pb/238U, 207Pb/235U and 207Pb/206Pb ratios, respectively. Long-term precision (2 r.s.d.) for the 206Pb/238U, 207Pb/235U and 207Pb/206Pb ratios of the Mud Tank zircon (732 Ma) was 3.9%, 4.1% and 1.7%, respectively (359 analyses). Selective integration of time-resolved signals was used to minimise the effect of Pb loss and common Pb enrichments on the measured ages. The precision and accuracy of our data compare very favourably with those obtained using more involved procedures to correct or minimise ablation- and ICP-MS-induced biases. 213 nm laser ablation produced comparable precision to 266 nm ablation using generally smaller spot sizes (40–50 vs. 60–80 μm), and offered significant advantages in terms of ablation duration and stability, particularly for small zircons (<60 μm). For the 91500 zircon, but not the Mud Tank zircon, 213 nm ablation also produced significantly older and more accurate Pb/U ages. This suggests that shorter wavelength ablation may have reduced a matrix-dependent elemental fractionation difference between sample and standard. The accuracy and precision of the technique for young zircons are demonstrated by analysis of three zircon populations ranging in age from 417 to 7 Ma. In each case, the zircons have yielded concordant ages or common Pb discordia which give concordia intercept ages that are in agreement with independently determined ages for the same samples. Application of Tera–Wasserburg diagrams [Earth Planet. Sci. Lett. 14 (1972) 281] was found to be the most useful approach to handling common Pb contributions that were not removed by selective integration of signals.

Abstract:Abstract This work evaluates the use of femtosecond laser ablation multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (fs-LA-MC-ICP-MS) for Zr isotopic analysis in zircons. The mass fractionation caused by instrumental mass discrimination was corrected by a combination of internal correction using Sr as an internal standard (coming from a NIST SRM 987 standard solution) and external correction using a matrix-matched standard. Several important instrument parameters were investigated, such as the effect of the addition of N 2 and “wet” plasma condition, the mass fractionation behaviors between Zr isotopes and Sr isotopes, the position effect in laser ablation cell and the effect of laser ablation parameters (laser spot size and energy density). The Zr isotope compositions of seven zircons (GJ-1, 91500, Plešovice, Rak-17, Paki, Aus and Mala) were determined by the developed fs-LA-MC-ICP-MS and thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS). Our fs-LA-MC-ICP-MS results for Zr isotope compositions agreed with TIMS analyses within analytical uncertainties, indicating the presented method is a suitable tool to resolve isotopic zoning in natural zircons. The results also suggest that GJ-1, 91500, Plešovice, Paki, Aus and Mala had the homogenous Zr isotope composition and could be considered as the potential candidates for the Zr isotope analysis in zircons, except Rak-17 which presented the large Zr isotope variation.

U-Pb Age Spectra and Trace Elements of Detrital Zircon from Quanji Group: Implications for Thermal Events and Early Evolution in the Basement

Abstract:LA-ICP-MS U-Pb age and trace elements composition have been conducted from 111 spots analyses on detrital zircons from the sandstone of the lower Nanhua-Sinian Quanji Group, the unmetamorphosed sedimentary cover on the Quanji massif (a continental fragment separated from the Tarim block). The age spectra from 87 concordant ages records strong ~2.45, ~2.32, ~2.11 and ~1.95 Ga thermal events in the Paleoproterozoic and two weak thermal events in the Neoarchean time, and indicates that sediments of quartzo-sandstone were derived from the basement comprising of the Dakendaban Group and Delingha complex with unexposed Ended-Paleoproterozoic mafic dike swarm in the middle to eastern Quanji massif. CL images and trace elements of the detrital zircons suggest that the ~2.45, ~2.32 and ~2.11 Ga thermal events are characterized by magmatic intrusion along with crustal growth and the ~1.95 Ga event by strong regional metamorphism and anatexis, with magmatic intrusion a possible event that could not be ruled out. Our new data demonstrate that basement of the Quanji massif and its inherited Tarim craton are mainly composed of Paleoproterozoic rocks, however, they regionally developed magmatic intrusions accompanying crustal growth during ~2.32-2.45 Ga, thus share a similar geological evolution history or probably ever interacted with the North China craton in their early history.
Determination of U-Pb Age and Rare Earth Element Concentrations of Zircons from Cenozoic Intrusions in Northeastern China by Laser Ablation ICP-MS

Abstract:Using the in situ zircon U-Pb dating method of LA-ICPMS, we analyzed the 31 Ma old SHRIMP U-Pb age of the Yongsheng nepheline syenite from southern Jilin Province under different spot sizes. The obtained ages are comparable with that of SHRIMP in both accuracy and precision. The age is also identical to that of the Yinmawanshan gabbro from the Liaodong Peninsula within error. Both the Yongsheng nepheline syenite and the Yinmawanshan gabbro represent the youngest known exposed intrusions in northeastern and even eastern China. The results indicate the Eocene mantle-derived magmatic underplating, and the rapid crustal uplifting of this region since 30 Ma. The analyses also document extremely high LREE concentrations and relatively flat REE patterns for the zircons from the Yongsheng nepheline syenite, which represent a new type of zircon REE pattern.

Abstract:Zircon U-Pb dating by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) is a widely used analytical method in the field of geology. However, the U-Pb dating of zircons with complex interior structures has always been a challenge in laser in situ analysis. To address this issue, we introduce a novel method, termed reverse depth profiling, for LA-ICPMS U-Pb dating of such zircons. This method combines the traditional LA-ICPMS method with the depth profiling, analyzing the over-polished zircon from core to rim. We applied this method to zircons from the Himalayan leucogranites in Dinggye and garnet-bearing granitic gneiss in Yadong. The method allows the successful dating of zircon rims as narrow as only 0.6 μm. Characterized by high sample analysis efficiency, superior vertical spatial resolution, and optimal data utilization, this method enhances the success rate of U-Pb dating of structurally complex zircons. The valid geochronological information of inherited cores and magmatic/metamorphic rims of zircons can be obtained by this method, which has great potential for unraveling complex magmatic and metamorphic events in tectonically-activated regions in the geological history.

Abstract:Rationale: Signal detection for uranium-lead (U-Pb) dating of zircon is typically performed via ion counters. Here, we develop a preliminary understanding of the strengths and limitations of faraday-cup-based detection. Methods: A suite of zircon reference materials and the NIST-610 glass were sampled using laser ablation followed by U-Pb isotope ratio measurement on a Neoma multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer. Results: We were able to produce geologically accurate 207Pb/206Pb, 206Pb/238U, and 207Pb/235U ratios for the NIST-610 glass and the zircon standards, with ages ranging from ~2.5 Ga to ~337 Ma (TanBrown A, Oracle, 91550, Mud Tank, Temora, and Plešovice). Two of the younger zircon standards examined (94-35, ~55.6 Ma, and Fish Canyon, 28.6 Ma) yielded accurate 206Pb/238U but not 207Pb/235U or 207Pb/206Pb ratios, whereas the youngest zircon standard (Penglai, ~4.4 Ma) failed for all three ratios of interest. The accuracy and precision of the all-faraday method are directly tied to signal intensity, with reliable data capable of being produced even when both isotopes in a ratio have signals below ~0.001 V (equivalent to ~62 500 cps on an ion counter). Conclusion: The all-faraday cup multicollection method provides sufficient sensitivity to obtain geologically meaningful U-Pb data, with possible advantages being that laser pit depth-dependent changes in the observed interelemental fractionation behavior may be easier to correct using a static collector configuration compared to when the ion beam is swept across a single detector while also removing the need for an interdetector-type calibration. Further work is needed to refine the all-faraday cup method (e.g., application of background subtraction and common Pb corrections, outlier removal, and interelement as well as down-hole fractionation corrections), but our initial results demonstrate that the faraday detector method has sufficient sensitivity to warrant further study.
In Situ U-Pb Dating of Xenotime by Laser Ablation (La)-Icp-ms

Abstract:Xenotime is an ideal mineral for U-Th-Pb isotopic dating because of its relatively high U and Th contents, but typically low concentration of common Pb. These characteristics, and the fact that it is widespread throughout various types of rocks, suggest that the U-Th-Pb dating of xenotime has broad applications. Studies of U-Pb dating on xenotime by ion microprobe (such as SHRIMP) have increased in recent years, whereas studies by laser ablation (LA)-ICP-MS are still rare. In this study, we developed a technique for U-Pb dating of xenotime using the 193 nm ArF laser-ablation system and Agilent 7500a Q-ICP-MS. To evaluate the reliability of our method, a xenotime standard, BS-1, was analyzed and calibrated against another xenotime standard, MG-1. The weighted mean 206Pb/238U ages of 510.1 ± 5.2 Ma (2 σ, n = 21), 509.8 ± 4.3 Ma (2 σ, n = 21) and 510.0 ± 4.6 Ma (2 σ, n = 21) were obtained using beam diameters of 16, 24 and 32 μm, respectively. These ages are identical to those determined by ID-TIMS method (weighted mean 206Pb/238U age of 508.8 ± 1.4 Ma), which supports the reliability of our LA-ICP-MS method. We also analyzed xenotimes in leucogranites from South Tibet and granites from Xihuashan in southern China, and obtained accurate and precise ages. Nevertheless, we observed systematic differences in Pb/U fractionation among xenotime, monazite and zircon. The matrix-effect resulted in either under-correction or over-correction of fractionation, and thus led to inaccurate ages. Thus, a matrix-matched material is required for U-Pb dating of xenotime by LA-ICP-MS.
Preliminary U-Pb ion probe age determination of zircons from gneisses, Northern Dabie Terrain

Abstract:Two zircon ages were determined for U-Pb ion probe analyses from Lutushi (LTS) and Daoshicong (DSC) gneisses, Northern Dabie Terrain (NDT). Twenty U-Pb ages from thirteen zircon grains indicated that the ages for LTS gneiss are mainly ranged between 233~394Ma and DSC gneiss between 307~718Ma. The degree of concordance for DSC gneiss is better than that of LTS gneiss. Both gneisses show no age information below 220Ma. Since there were exits of discordances, these zircon ages probably represented mixing and overgrowth of ancient magmatic zircons with Triassic ultra-high pressure metamorphic and Cretaceous magmatic zircons. Those which were treated by Harker et al. as typical gneisses occurred in NDT may also be complex zircons which are formed in Precambrian magmatic zircons with late Cretaceous metamorphic zircons. Therefore, according to their U-Pb ages and distribution of zircons, one cannot conclude that all the gneisses from NDT were formed at Cretaceous. There may be two different age gneisses in NDT.

Abstract:The laser microprobe (U-Th)/He dating method is a new and efficient technique that utilizes an interoperable and integrated suite of instruments, including the excimer laser system, quadrupole helium mass spectrometer, and quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. To demonstrate the applicability of this new method, we applied both the conventional and laser microprobe techniques to the Sri Lanka zircon (LGC-1). We obtained twenty-two (U-Th)/He ages on nine shards using the laser microprobe method, showing an average (U-Th)/He age of 471.1 ± 16.6 Ma (1σ). This result is generally consistent with the mean conventional age (484.1 ± 9.6 Ma) for twenty-two zircon fragments. Both are nearly equal to the age value (~476 Ma) predicted by the He diffusion model and the thermal history model of Sri Lanka highland. The variations in the laser microprobe-derived ages are most likely caused by the uncertainties in volume measurements, which is also common in other studies. We used the Mahalanobis distance technique to reduce the volume measurement bias by identifying and eliminating abnormal data.

Abstract:The stable Zr isotope ratios in zircon yield a novel geochemical tracer that, together with the Lu‐Hf and U‐Pb radiogenic isotope systems, allows for a better understanding of the magmatic evolution of silicate melts. We present a solution‐based procedure for coupled stable Zr, Lu‐Hf and U‐Pb isotope ratio determinations for individual zircons using a 91 Zr‐ 96 Zr tracer purified from Hf and a late‐spiking protocol for Zr. This method yields high‐precision Zr and Hf isotope results while maintaining low blank levels for U‐Pb isotope and Lu/Hf ratio determinations. With a two‐fold improvement on the precision relative to previous solution‐based work, we report δ 94 Zr IPGP‐Zr values (deviation of the 94 Zr/ 90 Zr ratio in the sample relative to the IPGP‐Zr reference material) and associated intermediate precisions (2 s ) for the zircon reference materials 91500, Mud Tank, Plešovice and Penglai of ‐0.041 ± 0.015‰, 0.018 ± 0.013‰, 0.089 ± 0.020‰ and ‐0.117 ± 0.021‰, respectively. Furthermore, this method yields un‐biased δ 94 Zr IPGP‐Zr and 176 Hf/ 177 Hf results for 25‐ng Zr and 0.56‐ng Hf aliquots of the Mud Tank zircon with intermediate precisions (2 s ) of 0.027‰ and 1.7 ε (parts per ten thousand), respectively. Thus, the presented method is applicable for the analysis of extremely small and rare zircon grains.

Abstract:A new natural zircon reference material SA01 is introduced for U‐Pb geochronology as well as O and Hf isotope geochemistry by microbeam techniques. The zircon megacryst is homogeneous with respect to U‐Pb, O and Hf isotopes based on a large number of measurements by laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The chemical abrasion isotope dilution thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (CA‐ID‐TIMS) U‐Pb isotopic analyses produced a mean 206Pb/238U age of 535.08 ± 0.32 Ma (2s, n = 10). Results of SIMS and LA‐ICP‐MS analyses on individual shards are consistent with the TIMS ages within uncertainty. The δ18O value determined by laser fluorination is 6.16 ± 0.26‰ (2s, n = 14), and the mean 176Hf/177Hf ratio determined by solution MC‐ICP‐MS is 0.282293 ± 0.000007 (2s, n = 30), which are in good agreement with the statistical mean of microbeam analyses. The megacryst is characterised by significant localised variations in Th/U ratio (0.328–4.269) and Li isotopic ratio (−5.5 to + 7.9‰); the latter makes it unsuitable as a lithium isotope reference material.

Abstract:Zircon U/Pb ages were measured for Qianshan gneiss at the ultrahigh pressure metamorphic (UHPM) complex in the Southern Dabie Terrain (SDT). According to morphology, Th and U contents of eight fractions of zircon and data distribution on the discordia, it is indicated that they should be treated as metamorphic overgrowth mixing zircons, in which the cores mainly are magmatic and the outers were metamorphic. The intercept ages show that the gneiss underwent UHPM. There is no direct correlation for zircon between morphological feature and genesis.
Non‐Matrix‐Matched Determination of Th‐Pb Ages in Zircon, Monazite and Xenotime by Laser Ablation‐Inductively Coupled Plasma‐Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:Similar to the U‐Pb system, the 232Th‐208Pb decay scheme is also widely utilised in geochronology of Th‐rich accessory minerals. The matrix‐dependent systemic deviations observed between different accessory minerals and the paucity of well‐characterised reference materials for some minerals of interest (e.g., xenotime and allanite) are the major obstacles to yield accurate and precise Th‐Pb ages with laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS). In this study, we investigated the effects of the addition of nitrogen, oxygen and water vapour before the ablation cell on the accuracy of Th‐Pb dating of accessory minerals (i.e., zircon, monazite and xenotime) using NIST SRM 610 glass as the calibrating reference material. Our results demonstrate that the measured 208Pb/232Th ages in zircon, monazite and xenotime were approximately 9–24% lower than their isotope dilution thermal ionisation mass spectrometry (ID‐TIMS) ages in normal ablation (without addition of additional gases). The measured 208Pb/232Th ages of zircon (Plešovice, M257 and Qinghu), monazite (44069 and Trebilcock) and xenotime (BS‐1 and MG‐1) showed excellent agreement with their respective reference values with the addition of small amounts of water vapour before the ablation cell. This may be due to the dramatically reduced biases for the down‐hole fractionation of Pb/Th intensity ratios in NIST SRM 610 and accessory minerals in the presence of water vapour. The Th‐Pb ages of zircon, monazite and xenotime were successfully analysed using NIST SRM 610 glass as the calibrating reference material with both 193 nm ArF excimer laser ablation‐quadrupole‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (LA‐Q‐ICP‐MS) and 213 nm Nd:YAG laser ablation‐sector field‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (LA‐SF‐ICP‐MS) in combination with the developed water vapour‐assisted method. This method is an effective and notably simple approach for non‐matrix‐matched analysis of Th‐Pb ages in zircon, monazite and xenotime by LA‐ICP‐MS.
