Abstract: The properties of quantum materials are commonly tuned using experimental variables such as pressure, magnetic field and doping. Here we explore a different approach: irreversible, plastic deformation of single crystals. We show for the archetypal unconventional superconductor SrTiO$_3$ that compressive plastic deformation induces low-dimensional superconductivity significantly above the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of undeformed samples. We furthermore present evidence for unusual normal-state transport behaviour that suggests superconducting correlations at temperatures two orders of magnitude above the bulk $T_c$. The superconductivity enhancement is correlated with the appearance of structural features related to self-organized dislocation structures, as revealed by diffuse neutron and X-ray scattering. These results suggest that deformed SrTiO$_3$ is a potential high-temperature superconductor, and push the limits of superconductivity in this low-density electronic system. More broadly, we demonstrate the promise of plastic deformation and dislocation engineering as tools to manipulate electronic properties of quantum materials.

Abstract:Ferroic systems under considerable geometrical restrictions at nanoscale have successfully introduced novel phases such as multiferroic and topological phases. However, ferroic orders completely disappear below the critical size limit of several nanometers and the geometry cannot be relied upon to produce a variety of phases. Here, via first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that a rich variety of phases and their transitions can be realized by dislocations in paraelectric SrTiO3. We show that atomic-scale ferroelectricity and (anti)ferromagnetism are induced by the strain concentration and nonstoichiometry intrinsic to dislocations in SrTiO3, resulting in ferroelectric-(anti)ferromagnetic-multiferroic phase transitions depending on the core structure. Furthermore, we also show that electrical polarization configurations strongly depend on the strain distribution around a dislocation and topological phases can be realized without geometrical restrictions. The present result suggests that the utilization of defects in a material is a powerful strategy to design ferroic orders below the critical size, thereby expanding the application of ferroic nanostructures to the atomic scale.
Electric field control of disorder-tunable superconductivity and the emergence of quantum metal at an oxide interface

Abstract:We report on an extraordinary field effect of the superconducting LaAlO3/KTaO3(111) interface with Tc ~2 K. By applying a gate voltage (VG) across KTaO3, the interface can be continuously tuned from superconducting into insulating states, yielding a dome-shaped Tc-VG dependence. The electric gating has only a minor effect on carrier density as evidenced in the Hall-effect measurement, while it changes spatial profile of the carriers in the interface, hence the carrier's disorder level significantly. As temperature is decreased, the resistance saturates at lowest temperature in both superconducting and insulating sides, despite an initial dramatic dropping or increasing, which suggests an emergence of quantum metallic state associated with failed superconductor and/or fragile insulator. A VG-modulation of the magnetic-field-driven superconductor to insulator quantum phase transition reveals a non-universal criticality.

Abstract:Quantum ground states which arise at atomically controlled oxide interfaces provide an opportunity to address key questions in condensed matter physics, including the nature of two-dimensional (2D) metallic behaviour often observed adjacent to superconductivity. At the superconducting LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface, a metallic ground state emerges upon the collapse of superconductivity with field-effect gating. Strikingly, such metallicity is accompanied with a pseudogap. Here, we utilize independent control of carrier density and disorder of the interfacial superconductor using dual electrostatic gates, which enables the comprehensive examination of the electronic phase diagram approaching zero temperature. We find that the pseudogap corresponds to precursor pairing, and the onset of long-range phase coherence forms a 2D superconducting dome as a function of the dual gate voltages. The gate-tuned superconductor-metal transitions are driven by macroscopic phase fluctuations of Josephson coupled superconducting puddles.

Abstract:Quantum materials have a fascinating tendency to manifest novel and unexpected electronic states upon proper manipulation. Ideally, such manipulation should induce strong and irreversible changes and lead to new relevant length scales. Plastic deformation introduces large numbers of dislocations into a material, which can organize into extended structures and give rise to qualitatively new physics as a result of the huge localized strains. However, this approach is largely unexplored in the context of quantum materials, which are traditionally grown to be as pristine and clean as possible. Here we show that plastic deformation induces robust magnetism in the quantum paraelectric SrTiO3, a property that is completely absent in the pristine material. We combine scanning magnetic measurements and near-field optical microscopy to find that the magnetic order is localized along dislocation walls and coexists with ferroelectric order along the walls. The magnetic signals can be switched on and off via external stress and altered by external electric fields, which demonstrates that plastically deformed SrTiO3 is a quantum multiferroic. These results establish plastic deformation as a versatile knob for the manipulation of the electronic properties of quantum materials.
Defect Engineering for Nontrivial Multiferroic Orders in SrTiO3

Abstract:Although nanoscale multiferroics with coupled ferroelectricity and magnetism are of great technological and fundamental importance, the ferroic orders are inevitably destroyed in atomic-scale dimensions due to the intrinsic size effect or depolarization field. Here, we propose a strategy for atomic-size multiferroics by engineering the otherwise detrimental point defects in nonmagnetic paraelectric SrTiO3. Systematic exploration using first-principles and molecular dynamics simulations demonstrates that the Ti antisite (Ti-sr) defects in SrTiO3 have a tendency toward clustering with compact closure, which contributes to complex electrical polarization due to the large off-centering displacements of Ti-sr defects and the resulting separation between negative and positive charges. The Ti-sr defects also give rise to highly localized magnetic moments attributed to their unpaired spin-polarized electrons. The defect clustering and the associated multiferroic properties thus lead to atomic-size multiferroics with unusual ferroic orders.
Emergence of Non-Trivial Polar Topologies Hidden in Singular Stress Field in SrTiO3: Topological Strain-Field Engineering.

Abstract:Discovery of non-trivial topological structures in condensed matters holds promise in novel technological paradigms. In contrast to ferromagnetics, where a variety of topological structures such as vortex, meron, and skyrmion have been discovered, only few topological structures can exist in ferroelectrics due to the lack of non-collinear interaction like the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in ferromagnetics. Here, we demonstrate that polarization structures with a wide range of topological numbers (winding number n from -3 to +1) can be mechanically excited and designed by the mode-I singular stress field formed near the crack-tip in incipient ferroelectric SrTiO3. Our phase-field simulations based on Ginzburg-Landau theory successfully reveals that the near-tip polar topology is driven by the flexoelectric coupling with intense strain gradient at the tip, while a variety of the far-field topological structures is triggered by a collaboration between the electrostrictive and flexoelectric effects. The strain (gradient) field analysis further shows that the unexpected topological characters are implied in the singular stress field, which develops a variety of polar topologies near the crack tip. Therefore, our work provides a novel insight into the unusual interplay between mechanical- and ferroelectric-topologies, i.e. 'topological strain-field engineering', which paves the way to the mechanical design of functional topologies in the matter.

Abstract:Abstract An in-depth understanding of the dislocations motion process in non-metallic materials becomes increasingly important, stimulated by the recent emergence of ceramics and semiconductors with unexpected room temperature dislocation-mediated plasticity. In this work, local misfit energy is put forward to accurately derive the Peierls stress and model the dislocation process in SrTiO 3 ceramics instead of the generalized stacking fault (GSF) approach, which considers the in-plane freedom degrees of the atoms near the shear plane and describes the breaking and re-bonding processes of the complex chemical bonds. Particularly, we discover an abnormal shear-dependence of local misfit energy, which originates from the re-bonding process of the Ti-O bonds and the reversal of lattice dipoles. In addition, this approach predicts that oxygen vacancies in the SrTiO 3 can facilitate the nucleation and activation of dislocations with improvement of fracture toughness, owing to the reduction of average misfit energy and Peierls stress due to the disappearance of lattice dipole reversal. This work provides undiscovered insights into the dislocation process in non-metallic materials, which may bring implications to tune the plasticity and explore unknown ductile compositions.

Multiferroicity in plastically deformed SrTiO$_3$

Abstract:A major challenge in the development of quantum technologies is to induce additional types of ferroic orders into materials that exhibit other useful quantum properties. Various techniques have been applied to this end, such as elastically straining, doping, or interfacing a compound with other materials. Plastic deformation introduces permanent topological defects and large local strains into a material, which can give rise to qualitatively new functionality. Here we show via local magnetic imaging that plastic deformation induces robust magnetism in the quantum paraelectric SrTiO3, in both conducting and insulating samples. Our analysis indicates that the magnetic order is localized along dislocation walls and coexists with polar order along the walls. The magnetic signals can be switched on and off in a controllable manner with external stress, which demonstrates that plastically deformed SrTiO3 is a quantum multiferroic. These results establish plastic deformation as a versatile platform for quantum materials engineering.

Abstract:SrTiO$_3$ is an incipient ferroelectric on the verge of a polar instability, which is avoided at low temperatures by quantum fluctuations. Within this unusual quantum paraelectric phase, superconductivity persists despite extremely dilute carrier densities. Ferroelectric fluctuations have been suspected to play a role in the origin of superconductivity by contributing to electron pairing. To investigate this possibility, we used optical second harmonic generation to measure the doping and temperature dependence of the ferroelectric order parameter in compressively strained SrTiO$_3$ thin films. At low temperatures, we uncover a spontaneous out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization with an onset that correlates perfectly with normal-state electrical resistivity anomalies. These anomalies have previously been associated with an enhancement of the superconducting critical temperature in doped SrTiO$_3$ films, directly linking the ferroelectric and superconducting phases. We develop a long-range mean-field Ising model of the ferroelectric phase transition to interpret the data and extract the relevant energy scales in the system. Our results support a long-suspected connection between ferroelectricity and superconductivity in SrTiO$_3$, but call into question the role played by ferroelectric fluctuations.

Abstract:Dislocations in perovskite oxides have important impacts on their physical and chemical properties, which are determined by their unique atomic environments. In the present study, the structure of dislocations in a 10° low-angle grain boundary of SrTiO3 that was fabricated in an N2 annealing atmosphere is characterized by spherical aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy. We find that the dislocation cores are deficient in titanium (Ti) due to Sr substitution and under Ti occupancy. This differs from previously reported dislocation cores fabricated in an air annealing atmosphere, which show Ti enrichment. The presence of oxygen vacancies and partially reduced Ti are also detected in these Ti-deficient dislocation cores. These findings indicate that atomic structures of dislocations can be very different even when they have the same Burgers vectors. Controllable element segregation in the dislocations and grain boundaries via bicrystal engineering should be very useful for designing devices with novel functions.
Composition-dependent Shuffle-Shear Coupling and Shuffle-Regulated Strain Glass Transition in Compositionally Modulated Ti-Nb Alloys

Abstract:Athermal pure shuffle O ' nanodomains have been reported as a common structural state in metastable 8 -Ti alloys. In this study, by integrating thermodynamic databases, first-principles calculations, phase field simulations, and experiments, we reveal the coupling between the shuffle (O ') and shear (alpha '', orthorhombic martensite) nano -domains as a function of Nb concentration in Ti-Nb alloys. In particular, our first-principles calculations suggest a change in the phase transformation path from 8 -> alpha '' to 8 -> O ' as the Nb concentration increases, and our CALPHAD calculations based on the available thermodynamic database show a large metastable miscibility gap in Ti-Nb. Informed by these findings, our phase field simulations demonstrate how the O ' and alpha '' nanodomains form and evolve upon cooling in compositionally modulated Ti-Nb alloys produced by spinodal decomposition and the corresponding transformation behavior. Finally, our experimental characterization shows a continuous change of the shuffle component across the O '/alpha '' nanodomain boundaries. The novel microstructural states and their unique phase transformation path lead to an unprecedented continuous transformation behavior accom-panied by superelasticity with almost zero hysteresis and small residual strain over a wide temperature range, all of which have been observed in the experiments. This unique transformation behavior upon cooling can be well characterized as a shuffle-regulated strain glass transition. This study could provide new insight in alloy design by utilizing composition-dependent shuffle-shear coupling during a structural phase transformation.
Critical Exponents of Ferroelectric Transitions in Modulated SrTiO 3 :Consequences of Quantum Fluctuations and Quenched Disorder

Abstract:The ferroelectric transitions of several SrTiO3-based ferroelectrics are investigated experimentally and theoretically, with special attention to the critical scaling exponents associated with the phase transitions, in order to understand the competition among quantum fluctuations (QFs), quenched disorder, and ferroelectric ordering. Two representative systems with sufficiently strong QFs and quenched disorders in competition with the ferroelectric ordering are investigated. We start from non-stoichiometric SrTiO3 (STO) with the Sr/Ti ratio deviating slightly from one, which is believed to maintain strong QFs. Then, we address Ba/Ca co-doped Sr1-x(Ca0.6389Ba0.3611)(x)TiO3 (SCBT) with the averaged Sr-site ionic radius identical to the Sr2+ ionic radius, which is believed to offer remarkable quenched disorder associated with the Sr-site ionic mismatch. The critical exponents associated with polarization P and dielectric susceptibility e, respectively, as functions of temperature T close to the critical point T-c, are evaluated. It is revealed that both non-stoichiometric SrTiO3 and SCBT exhibit much bigger critical exponents than the Landau mean-field theory predictions. These critical exponents then decrease gradually with increasing doping level or deviation of Sr/Ti ratio from one. A transverse Ising model applicable to the Sr-site doped STO (e.g., Sr1-xCaxTiO3) at low level is used to explain the observed experimental data. It is suggested that the serious deviation of these critical exponents from the Landau theory predictions in these STO-based systems is ascribed to the significant QFs and quenched disorder by partially suppressing the long-range spatial correlation of electric dipoles around the transitions. The present work thus sheds light on our understanding of the critical behaviors of ferroelectric transitions in STO in the presence of quantum fluctuations and quenched disorder, whose effects have been demonstrated to be remarkable.
Spontaneous symmetry breaking of dislocation core in SrTiO3

Abstract:Dislocation endows intriguing properties in materials and attracted extensive interest, while its potential is far from being fully explored. Here, we use first-principles simulations to explore the property of an edge dislocation core in SrTiO3, an incipient ferroelectricity with a prototype perovskite structure. We discovered the spontaneous symmetry breaking in the dislocation, which is introduced by the atomic movement in the core and the Ti–O octahedron's distortion in the nearby unit cells. Next, we systematically investigate the coupling relationship between strain modes and ferroelectric atomic displacement modes based on group representation theory, and further proposed a model to quantificationally estimate the atomic configuration of SrTiO3 under complex strain conditions, which predicts the polarization near the dislocation decently.

Abstract:Dislocations in perovskite oxides have important impacts on their physical and chemical properties, which are determined by their unique atomic environments. Abstract:Dislocation engineering has the potential to open new avenues toward the exploration and modification of the properties of quantum materials. Strontium titanate (SrTiO3, STO) and potassium tantalate (KTaO3, KTO) are incipient ferroelectrics that show metallization and superconductivity at extremely low charge carrier concentrations, and have been the subject of resurgent interest. These materials also exhibit remarkable ambient-temperature ductility, and thus represent exceptional platforms for studies of the effects of deformation-induced dislocation structures on electronic properties. Recent work on plastically deformed STO revealed an enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature and the emergence of local ferroelectricity and magnetism near self-organized dislocation walls. Here we present a comprehensive structural analysis of plastically deformed STO and KTO, employing specially designed strain cells, diffuse neutron and x-ray scattering, Raman scattering, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Diffuse scattering and NMR provide insight into the dislocation configurations and densities and their dependence on strain. As in the prior work on STO, Raman scattering reveals evidence for local ferroelectric order near dislocation walls in plastically deformed KTO. Our findings provide valuable information about the self-organized defect structures in both materials, and they position KTO as a second model system with which to explore the associated emergent physics.

Coexistence of resistance oscillations and the anomalous metal phase in a lithium intercalated TiSe$_2$ superconductor

Abstract:Superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) appear in the phase diagram of a variety of materials including the high - $T$$_c$ cuprate family and many transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Their interplay may give rise to exotic quantum phenomena. Here, we show that superconducting arrays can spontaneously form in TiSe$_2$ - a TMD with coexisting superconductivity and CDW - after lithium ion intercalation. We induce a superconducting dome in the phase diagram of Li$_x$TiSe$_2$ by using the ionic solid-state gating technique. Around optimal doping, we observe magnetoresistance oscillations, indicating the emergence of periodically arranged domains. In the same temperature, magnetic field and carrier density regime where the resistance oscillations occur, we observe signatures for the anomalous metal - a state with a resistance plateau across a wide temperature range below the superconducting transition. Our study not only sheds further insight into the mechanism for the periodic electronic structure, but also reveals the interplay between the anomalous metal and superconducting fluctuations.

Abstract:It has been reported both experimentally and theoretically that the Ba2+-doping at the A-site of quantum paraelectric SrTiO3 suppresses the quantum fluctuations by activating the ferroelectric mode, while the Ru4+-doping at the B-site plays the opposite role. For a double-impurity doped SrTiO3, i.e., Sr1−xBaxTi1−yRuyO3, where the two types of opposite effects compete with each other, we propose an improved transverse-field Ising model in order to investigate the effect of the double-impurity doping on the quantum phase transitions and critical behaviors. The calculated quantum behavior is quite well consistent with experimental measurements. A linear relationship between the quantum critical doping concentrations for Ba2+ and Ru4+ is predicted, subsequently validated qualitatively by an anharmonic oscillator model.

Abstract:The Josephson junction, a key component of superconducting quantum circuits, is much less mature, especially for the high-transition (high-Tc) temperature cuprate superconductors. Herein, we report on the realization of high-Tc Josephson junction based on nanoslits on a SrTiO3 substrate. We demonstrate the ability to manipulate the current–voltage characteristics of YBa2Cu3O7−x bridges continuously from superconducting current-dominated to Josephson junction behavior by changing the irradiation parameters of the focused Ga+ ion beam on a single-crystal SrTiO3 substrate. The periodic critical current that depends on the magnetic flux coupled into the superconducting quantum interference devices was observed, which exactly reflects the effects of quantum tunneling and flux quantization. To some extent, this weak link within the framework of the semiconductor manufacturing process shows the potential to provide a cost-effective, highly efficient, and reliable pathway for scaling up quantum mechanical superconducting circuits, which is promising for the fabrication process.
