Abstract:We solve Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation for the color superconducting (CS) gap in nonlocal gauge which justifies the ladder approximation in subleading order calculation. The gap prefactor increases about 1.6 times to the leading order gap determined in Landau gauge.

Abstract:Recent observations of two nodeless gaps in superconducting CeCu_2Si_2 have raised intensive debates on its exact gap symmetry, while a satisfactory theoretical basis is still lacking. Here we propose a phenomenological approach to calculate the superconducting gap functions, taking into consideration both the realistic Fermi surface topology and the intra- and interband quantum critical scatterings. Our calculations yield a nodeless s^±-wave solution in the presence of strong interband pairing interaction, in good agreement with experiments. This provides a possible basis for understanding the superconducting gap symmetry of CeCu_2Si_2 at ambient pressure and indicates the potential importance of multiple Fermi surfaces and interband pairing interaction in understanding heavy fermion superconductivity.

Abstract:The transverse Nernst--Ettingshausen effect and thermopower of hot charge carriers in nondegenerate impure semiconductors placed at high electric and nonquantized magnetic fields in the nondiffusion approximation is studied. Arbitrary heating and mutual drag of electrons and long wavelength phonons interacting with electrons are considered. The spectrum of electrons is assumed to be strong nonparabolic in Kane two--band approximation. The case when the electron concentration is high and frequent interelectronic collisions lead to the equilibrium symmetric part of the electron distribution function with effective electron temperature is considered.

Abstract:The problem of color superconductivity in dense QCD is reconsidered in the improved rainbow approximation to the Schwinger-Dyson equation. The effect of the unscreened magnetic modes of gluons on the value of the color condensate is studied. In particular, it is shown that, at sufficiently large values of the chemical potential, these modes lead to the enhancement of the superconducting order parameter. The interplay between the instanton induced interaction and the one-gluon induced one in color superconductivity is discussed.

Abstract:We derive an Abelian-like Ward identity in color superconducting phase and calculate vertex corrections to the color superconducting gap. Making use of the Ward identity, we show that subleading order contributions to the gap from vertices are absent for gapped excitations.

Abstract:We clarify general properties of the energy gap regarding its functional dependence on the energy-momentum dictated by the invariance under a space inversion or a time reversal. Then we derive perturbatively the equation of the imaginary part of the gap function for dense QCD in weak coupling and generalize our results from 2SC case to CFL case. We confirm that the imaginary part is down by $g$ relative to the real part in weak coupling. The numerical results show that, up to the leading order, the imaginary part is no larger than one MeV at extremely large densities and can be as large as several MeV the densities are of physical interest.
Superconductivity from Perturbative One-Gluon Exchange in High Density Quark Matter

Abstract:We study color superconductivity in QCD at asymptotically large chemical potential. In this limit, pairing is dominated by perturbative one-gluon exchange. We derive the Eliashberg equation for the pairing gap and solve this equation numerically. Taking into account both magnetic and electric gluon exchanges, we find $\Delta\sim g^{-5}\exp(-c/g)$ with $c=3\pi^2/\sqrt{2}$, verifying a recent result by Son. For chemical potentials that are of physical interest, $\mu< 1$ GeV, the calculation ceases to be reliable quantitatively, but our results suggest that the gap can be as large as 100 MeV.

Abstract:We study the gauge field fluctuations in dense quark matter and determine the temperature of the induced first-order phase transition to the color-superconducting phase in weak coupling. We find that the local approximation of the coupling between the gauge potential and the order parameter, employed in the Ginzburg-Landau theory, has to be modified by restoring the full momentum dependence of the polarization function of gluons in the superconducting phase.
Astrophysical Equation-of-State Constraints on the Color-Superconducting Gap

Abstract:We demonstrate that astrophysical constraints on the dense-matter equation of state place an upper bound on the color-superconducting gap in dense matter above the transition from nuclear matter to quark matter. Pairing effects in the color-flavor locked (CFL) quark matter phase increase the pressure at high density, and if this effect is sufficiently large then the requirements of causality and mechanical stability make it impossible to reach such a pressure in a way that is consistent with what is known at lower densities. The intermediate-density equation of state is inferred by considering extensions of chiral effective field theory (CEFT) to neutron star densities, and conditioning these using current astrophysical observations of neutron star radius, maximum mass, and tidal deformability (PSR J0348+0432, PSR J1624-2230, PSR J0740+6620, GW170817). At baryon number chemical potential $\mu = 2.6~\text{GeV}$ we find a 95% upper limit on the CFL pairing gap $\Delta$ of $457~\text{MeV}$ using overly conservative assumptions and $216~\text{MeV}$ with more reasonable assumptions. This constraint may be strengthened by future astrophysical measurements as well as by future advances in high density QCD calculations.

Abstract:In this article, we propose a new approach to calculate the Nambu-Gorkov propagator intuitively with some linear algebra techniques in presence of the scalar diquark condensates. With the help of energy projective operators, we can obtain relatively simple expressions for the quark propagators, which greatly facilitate the calculations in solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation to obtain the gap parameters.

Abstract:In a unified perturbative treatment from the high-density side, we compute the speed of sound and the trace anomaly as functions of the chemical potential $\mu$ for the two-color diquark superfluid, the pion-condensed high-isospin matter, and the 2SC quark matter. We find that the corrections induced by the gap energy $\Delta$ involve nontrivial interplay between the dimensionless magnitude $|\Delta/\mu|$ and the derivative $|\partial\Delta/\partial\mu|$. Even though the gap equation has a common structure for these phases of our interest, different numerical constants cause drastic changes in the speed of sound corrections. As long as $|\Delta/\mu|$ is dominant over the derivative, the gap effects increase the speed of sound, which is consistent with the expected behavior of exhibiting a peak at intermediate density. We then discuss the trace anomaly which is pushed down generally by the gap effects and turns out to be negative widely in the high density regime. For demonstration of non-perturbative enhancement, we take account of the instanton-induced interaction. We confirm a further increase in the speed of sound for the two-color diquark superfluid and the pion-condensed high-isospin matter, while the speed of sound for the 2SC quark matter deviates far below the conformal limit due to the derivative contribution.

Abstract:We study our Schwinger-Dyson equation as well as the large $N_{c}$ loop equation for supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions by the N=1 superspace Wilson-loop variable. We are successful in deriving a new manifestly supersymmetric form in which a loop splitting and joining are represented by a manifestly supersymmetric as well as supergauge invariant operation in superspace. This is found to be a natural extension from the abelian case. We solve the equation to leading order in perturbation theory or equivalently in the linearized approximation, obtaining a desirable nontrivial answer. The super Wilson-loop variable can be represented as the system of one-dimensional fermion along the loop coupled minimally to the original theory. One-loop renormalization of the one-point Wilson-loop average is explicitly carried out, exploiting this property. The picture of string dynamics obtained is briefly discussed.

A new algorithm towards a quasi-Wigner solution of the gap equation beyond the chiral limit

Abstract:We propose a new algorithm to solve the quasi-Wigner solution of the gap equation beyond the chiral limit. Employing a Gaussian gluon model and rainbow truncation, we find that the quasi-Wigner solution exists in a limited region of quark mass, m < 43.1 MeV, at zero temperature T and zero chemical potential mu. The difference between Comwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis (CJT) effective actions of quasi-Wigner and Nambu-Goldstone solutions shows that the Nambu-Goldstone solution is more stable. Moreover, the quasi-Wigner solution is studied at finite temperature and chemical potential, the infrared mass function of the quasi-Wigner solution is negative and decreases along with T at mu = 0. Its susceptibility is divergent at certain temperatures with small m, and this temperature decreases along with m. Taking T = 80 MeV as an example, the quasi-Wigner solution is shown at finite chemical potential up to mu = 350 MeV as well as Nambu solution, the coexistence of these two solutions is used to analyze the properties of phase transition. The first order chiral phase transition line is determined by the difference of CJT effective actions.

Abstract:We study the angular momentum mixing effects in the color superconductor with non-spherical pairing. We first clarify the concept of the angular momentum mixing with a toy model for non-relativistic and spinless fermions. Then we derive the gap equation for the polar phase of dense QCD by minimizing the CJT free energy. The solution of the gap equation consists of all angular momentum partial waves of odd parity. The corresponding free energy is found to be lower than that reported in the literature with p-wave only.

Abstract:We use a variational procedure to study finite density QCD in an approximation in which the interaction between quarks is modelled by that induced by instantons. We find that uniform states with conventional chiral symmetry breaking have negative pressure with respect to empty space at all but the lowest densities, and are therefore unstable. This is a precisely defined phenomenon which motivates the basic picture of hadrons assumed in the MIT bag model, with nucleons as droplets of chiral symmetry restored phase. At all densities high enough that the chirally symmetric phase fills space, we find that color symmetry is broken by the formation of a condensate of quark Cooper pairs. A plausible ordering scheme leads to a substantial gap in a Lorentz scalar channel involving quarks of two colors, and a much smaller gap in an axial vector channel involving quarks of the third color.

Abstract:We employ a bispinor gap equation to study superfluidity at nonzero chemical potential: μ 6= 0, in twoand three-colour QCD. The two-colour theory, QC2D, is an excellent exemplar: the order of truncation of the quark-quark scattering kernel: K, has no qualitative impact, which allows a straightforward elucidation of the effects of μ when the coupling is strong. In rainbow-ladder truncation, diquark bound states appear in the spectrum of the three-colour theory, a defect that is eliminated by an improvement of K. The corrected gap equation describes a superfluid phase that is semi-quantitatively similar to that obtained using the rainbow truncation. A model study suggests that the width of the superfluid gap and the transition point in QC2D provide reliable quantitative estimates of those quantities in QCD.

Abstract:We present the dispersion relations for quasiparticle excitations about the color-flavor locked ground state of QCD at high baryon density. In the presence of condensates which pair light and strange quarks there need not be an energy gap in the quasiparticle spectrum. This raises the possibility of gapless color superconductivity, with a Meissner effect but no minimum excitation energy. Analysis within a toy model suggests that gapless color superconductivity may occur only as a metastable phase.

Effect of Gauge Boson Mass on Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Three-Dimensional QED

Abstract:In three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED(3)) with a massive gauge boson, we investigate the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the fermion self-energy in the Landau gauge and find that chiral symmetry breaking (CSB) occurs when the gauge boson mass xi is smaller than a finite critical value xi(cv) but is suppressed when xi>xi(cv). We further show that the critical value xi(cv) does not qualitatively change after considering higher order corrections from the wave function renormalization and vertex function. Based on the relation between CSB and the gauge boson mass xi, we give a field theoretical description of the competing antiferromagnetic and superconducting orders and, in particular, the coexistence of these two orders in high temperature superconductors. When the gauge boson mass xi is generated via the instanton effect in a compact QED(3) of massless fermions, our result shows that CSB coexists with the instanton effect in a wide region of xi, which can be used to study the confinement-deconfinement phase transition.
Pressure and speed of sound in two-flavor color-superconducting quark matter at next-to-leading order

Abstract:Deconfined quark matter at asymptotically high densities is weakly coupled, due to the asymptotic freedom of Quantum Chromodynamics. In this weak-coupling regime, bulk thermodynamic properties of quark matter, assuming a trivial ground state, are currently known to partial next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. However, the ground state at high densities is expected to be a color superconductor, in which the excitation spectrum of (at least some) quarks exhibit a gap with a non-perturbative dependence on the strong coupling. In this work, we calculate the thermodynamic properties of color-superconducting quark matter at high densities and zero temperature at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the coupling in the presence of a finite gap. We work in the limit of two massless quark flavors, which corresponds to deconfined symmetric nuclear matter, and further assume that the gap is small compared to the quark chemical potential. In these limits, we find that the NLO corrections to the pressure and speed of sound are comparable in size to the leading-order effects of the gap, and further increase both quantities above their values for non-superconducting quark matter. We also provide a parameterization of the NLO speed of sound to guide phenomenology in the high-density region, and we furthermore comment on whether our findings should be expected to extend to the case of three-flavor quark matter of relevance to neutron stars.
