Abstract:I prove forcing preservation theorems for products of definable partial orders preserving the cofinality of the meager or null ideal. Rectangular Ramsey theorems for related ideals follow from the proofs.

Abstract:As a result of 33 intercontinental Zoom calls, we characterise big Ramsey degrees of the generic partial order. This is an infinitary extension of the well known fact that finite partial orders endowed with linear extensions form a Ramsey class (this result was announced by Nešetřil and Rödl in 1984 with first published proof by Paoli, Trotter and Walker in 1985). Towards this, we refine earlier upper bounds obtained by Hubička based on a new connection of big Ramsey degrees to the Carlson-Simpson theorem and we also introduce a new technique of giving lower bounds using an iterated application of the upper-bound theorem.

Abstract:We develop a transfer principle of structural Ramsey theory from finite structures to ultraproducts. We show that under certain mild conditions, when a class of finite structures has finite small Ramsey degrees, under the (Generalized) Continuum Hypothesis the ultraproduct has finite big Ramsey degrees for internal colorings. The necessity of restricting to internal colorings is demonstrated by the example of the ultraproduct of finite linear orders. Under CH, this ultraproduct L⁎ has, as a spine, η1 , an uncountable analogue of the order type of rationals η . Finite big Ramsey degrees for η were exactly calculated by Devlin in [5] . It is immediate from [39] that η1 fails to have finite big Ramsey degrees. Moreover, we extend Devlin's coloring to η1 to show that it witnesses big Ramsey degrees of finite tuples in η on every copy of η in η1 , and consequently in L⁎ . This work gives additional confirmation that ultraproducts are a suitable environment for studying Ramsey properties of finite and infinite structures.

Abstract:For a relational structure ${\mathbb X}$ we investigate the partial order $\langle {\mathbb P} ({\mathbb X}) ,\subset \rangle$, where ${\mathbb P} ({\mathbb X}):=\{ f[X]: f\in \mathop{\rm Emb}\nolimits ({\mathbb X})\}$. Here we consider uncountable ordinals. Since $\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\alpha )$ is isomorphic to the direct product $\prod _{i=1}^n (\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\omega ^{\delta _i}))^{s_i}$, where $\alpha = \omega ^{\delta _n}s_n+\dots +\omega ^{\delta _1}s_1+ m$ is the Cantor normal form for $\alpha $, the analysis is reduced to the investigation of the posets of the form ${\mathbb P} (\omega ^{\delta })$. It turns out that, in ZFC, either the poset $\mathop{\rm sq}\nolimits {\mathbb P} (\alpha )$ is $\sigma$-closed and completely embeds $P(\omega )/\mathop{\rm Fin}$ and, hence, preserves $\omega _1$ and forces $|{\mathfrak c}|=|{\mathfrak h}|$, or, otherwise, completely embeds the algebra $P(\lambda )/[\lambda ]^{<\lambda }$, for some regular $\omega <\lambda \leq \mathop{\rm cf}\nolimits (\delta )$, and collapses $\omega _2$ to $\omega $. Abstract:We study relationships between various set theoretic compactness principles, focusing on the interplay between the three families of combinatorial objects or principles mentioned in the title. Specifically, we show the following. (1) Strong forcing axioms, in general incompatible with the existence of indexed squares, can be made compatible with weaker versions of indexed squares. (2) Indexed squares and indecomposable ultrafilters with suitable parameters can coexist. As a consequence, the amount of stationary reflection known to be implied by the existence of a uniform indecomposable ultrafilter is optimal. (3) The Proper Forcing Axiom implies that any cardinal carrying a uniform indecomposable ultrafilter is either measurable or a supremum of countably many measurable cardinals. Leveraging insights from the preceding sections, we demonstrate that the conclusion cannot be improved.

Abstract:Recent work of Hopkins establishes that the lattice of order ideals of a minuscule poset satisfies the coincidental down-degree expectations property of Reiner, Tenner, and Yong. His approach appeals to the classification of minuscule posets. A uniform proof is presented herein. The blueprint follows that of Rush and Wang in their uniform proof that various cardinality statistics are homomesic on orbits of order ideals of minuscule posets under the Fon-Der-Flaass action. The underpinning remains the original insight of Rush and Shi into the structure of the isomorphism between the weight lattice of a minuscule representation of a complex simple Lie algebra and the lattice of order ideals of the corresponding minuscule poset.

Forcing Properties of Ideals of Closed Sets

Abstract:Abstract With every σ -ideal I on a Polish space we associate the σ -ideal I * generated by the closed sets in I . We study the forcing notions of Borel sets modulo the respective σ -ideals I and I * and find connections between their forcing properties. To this end, we associate to a σ -ideal on a Polish space an ideal on a countable set and show how forcing properties of the forcing depend on combinatorial properties of the ideal. We also study the 1–1 or constant property of σ -ideals, i.e., the property that every Borel function defined on a Borel positive set can be restricted to a positive Borel set on which it either 1–1 or constant. We prove the following dichotomy: if I is a σ -ideal generated by closed sets, then either the forcing P 1 adds a Cohen real, or else I has the 1–1 or constant property.

Abstract:In this thesis, we present quantitative Ramsey-type results in the setting of finite sets that are equipped with a partial order, so-called posets. A prominent example of a poset is the Boolean lattice $Q_n$, which consists of all subsets of $\{1,\dots,n\}$, ordered by inclusion. For posets $P$ and $Q$, the poset Ramsey number $R(P,Q)$ is the smallest $N$ such that no matter how the elements of $Q_N$ are colored in blue and red, there is either an induced subposet isomorphic to $P$ in which every element is colored blue, or an induced subposet isomorphic to $Q$ in which every element is colored red. The central focus of this thesis is to investigate $R(P,Q_n)$, where $P$ is fixed and $n$ grows large. Our results contribute to an active area of discrete mathematics, which studies the existence of large homogeneous substructures in host structures with local constraints, introduced for graphs by Erdős and Hajnal. We provide an asymptotically tight bound on $R(P,Q_n)$ for $P$ from several classes of posets, and show a dichotomy in the asymptotic behavior of $R(P,Q_n)$, depending on whether $P$ contains a subposet isomorphic to one of two specific posets. A fundamental question in the study of poset Ramsey numbers is to determine the asymptotic behavior of $R(Q_n,Q_n)$ for large $n$. In this dissertation, we present improvements on the known lower and upper bound on $R(Q_n,Q_n)$. Moreover, we explore variations of the poset Ramsey setting, including Erdős-Hajnal-type questions when the small forbidden poset has a non-monochromatic color pattern, and so-called weak poset Ramsey numbers, which are concerned with non-induced subposets.

Abstract:We discuss the externally definable Ramsey property, a weakening of the Ramsey property for ultrahomogeneous structures, where the only colourings considered are those that are externally definable: that is, definable with parameters in an elementary extension. We show a number of basic results analogous to the classical Ramsey theory, and show that, for an ultrahomogeneous structure M, the externally definable Ramsey property is equivalent to the dynamical statement that, for each natural number n, every subflow of the space of n-types with parameters in M has a fixed point. We discuss a range of examples, including results regarding the lexicographic product of structures.

On the Weihrauch degree of the additive Ramsey theorem

Abstract:We characterize the strength, in terms of Weihrauch degrees, of certain problems related to Ramsey-like theorems concerning colourings of the rationals and of the natural numbers. The theorems we are chiefly interested in assert the existence of almost-homogeneous sets for colourings of pairs of rationals respectively natural numbers satisfying properties determined by some additional algebraic structure on the set of colours. In the context of reverse mathematics, most of the principles we study are equivalent to $\Sigma^0_2$-induction over $\mathrm{RCA}_0$. The associated problems in the Weihrauch lattice are related to $\mathrm{TC}_\mathbb{N}^*$, $(\mathrm{LPO}')^*$ or their product, depending on their precise formalizations.

On Ramsey degrees, compactness and approximability

Abstract:One of the consequences of the Compactness Principle in structural Ramsey theory is that the small Ramsey degrees cannot exceed the corresponding big Ramsey degrees, thereby justifying the choice of adjectives. However, it is unclear what happens in the realm of dual Ramsey degrees due to the lack of the compactness argument that applies to that setting. In this paper we present a framework within which both "direct" and dual Ramsey statements can be stated and reasoned about in a uniform fashion. We introduce the notion of approximability which yields a general compactness argument powerful enough to prove statements about both "direct" and dual Ramsey phenomena. We conclude the paper with an application of the new strategies by generalizing Voigt's $\star$-version of the Infinite Ramsey Theorem to a large class of relational structures and deriving a Ramsey statement for "loose colorings" of enumerated Fra\"ıssé limits.

On Friedman's Property

Abstract:We define forcing orders which add witnesses to the failure of various forms of Friedman's Property. These posets behave similarly to the forcing order adding a nonreflecting stationary set but have the advantage of allowing the construction of master conditions and thus the preservation of various large cardinal properties. We apply these new techniques to separate various instances of variants of Friedman's Problem, both between different instances at one cardinal as well as equal instances at different cardinals and en passant obtain some new results regarding the differences between ${<}\,\kappa$- and $\kappa$-strategic closure.

Abstract:We show that the Proper Forcing Axiom for forcing notions of size $\aleph_1$ is consistent with the continuum being arbitrarily large. In fact, assuming $GCH$ holds and $\kappa\geq\omega_2$ is a regular cardinal, we prove that there is a proper and $\aleph_2$-c.c.\ forcing $\mathbb{P}$ giving rise to a model of this forcing axiom together with $2^{\aleph_0}=\kappa$ and which, in addition, satisfies all statements of the form $\mathcal{H}(\aleph_2)\models \forall x\exists y\varphi(x, y)$, where $\varphi(x, y)$ is a restricted formula with the property that for every $a\in \mathcal{H}(\aleph_2)$ and every inner model $M$ of $CH$ with $a\in M$ there is, in $M$, a suitably nice proper poset adding some $b$ such that $\varphi(a, b)$. In particular, $\mathbb{P}$ forces Moore's Measuring principle, Baumgartner's Axiom for $\aleph_1$-dense sets of reals, Todorčević's Open Colouring Axiom for sets of size $\aleph_1$, and Todorěvić's P-ideal Dichotomy for $\aleph_1$-generated ideals on $\omega_1$, among other statements. In particular, all these statements are simultaneously compatible with a large continuum.

Abstract:We define typical forcings encompassing many informal forcing arguments in bounded arithmetic and give general conditions for such forcings to produce models of the universal variant of relativized $T^1_2$. We apply this result to study the relative complexity of total (type 2) NP search problems associated to finitary combinatorial principles. Complexity theory compares such problems with respect to polynomial time many-one or Turing reductions. From a logical perspective such problems are graded according to the bounded arithmetic theories that prove their totality. The logical analogue of a reduction is to prove the totality of one problem from the totality of another. The link between the two perspectives is tight for what we call universal variants of relativized bounded arithmetics. We strengthen a theorem of Buss and Johnson (2012) that infers relative bounded depth Frege proofs of totality from polynomial time Turing reducibility. As an application of our general forcing method we derive a strong form of Riis' finitization theorem (1993). We extend it by exhibiting a simple model-theoretic property that implies independence from the universal variant of relativized $T^1_2$ plus the weak pigeonhole principle. More generally, we show that the universal variant of relativized $T^1_2$ does not prove (the totality of the total NP search problem associated to) a strong finitary combinatorial principle from a weak one. Being weak or strong are simple model-theoretic properties based on the behaviour of the principles with respect to finite structures that are only partially defined.

Abstract:We prove that for every colouring of pairs of reals with finitely-many colours, there is a set homeomorphic to the rationals which takes no more than two colours. This was conjectured by Galvin in 1970, and a colouring of Sierpi{ń}ski from 1933 witnesses that the number of colours cannot be reduced to one. Previously in 1985 Shelah had shown that a stronger statement is consistent with a forcing construction assuming the existence of large cardinals. Then in 2018 Raghavan and Todorčević had proved it assuming the existence of large cardinals. We prove it in $ZFC$. In fact Raghavan and Todorčević proved, assuming more large cardinals, a similar result for a large class of topological spaces. We prove this also, again in $ZFC$.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that Ramsey's theorem for pairs and two colors is $\Pi^1_1$-conservative over~$\mathsf{RCA}_0 + \mathsf{B}\Sigma^0_2 + \mathsf{WF}(\epsilon_0)$ and over~$\mathsf{RCA}_0 + \mathsf{B}\Sigma^0_2 + \bigcup_n \mathsf{WF}(\omega^\omega_n)$. These results improve theorems from Chong, Slaman and Yang and Kołodziejczyk and Yokoyama and belong to a long line of research towards the characterization of the first-order part of Ramsey's theorem for pairs.

Abstract:In recent work, the second author extended combinatorial principles due to Jech and Magidor that characterize certain large cardinal properties so that they can also hold true for small cardinals. For inaccessible cardinals, these modifications have no effect, and the resulting principles still give the same characterization of large cardinals. We prove that the proper forcing axiom PFA implies these principles hold for ω2. Using this, we argue to show that any of the known methods for forcing models of PFA from a large cardinal assumption requires a strongly compact cardinal. If one forces PFA using a proper forcing, then we get the optimal result that a supercompact cardinal is necessary.

Abstract:Generalised indiscernibles highlight a strong link between model theory and structural Ramsey theory. In this paper, we use generalised indiscernibles as tools to prove results in both these areas. More precisely, we first show that a reduct of an ultrahomogenous $\aleph_0$-categorical structure which has higher arity than the original structure cannot be Ramsey. In particular, the only nontrivial Ramsey reduct of the generically ordered random $k$-hypergraph is the linear order. We then turn our attention to model-theoretic dividing lines that are characterised by collapsing generalised indiscernibles, and prove, for these dividing lines, several transfer principles in (full and lexicographic) products of structures. As an application, we construct new algorithmically tame classes of graphs.

In fact, we show a stronger result: the infinite Ramsey theorem (for tuples of all lengths) is equivalent to the statement that any array for a well order X and is good, over the base theory .
