Abstract:The article analyzes a proposed network topology for the ATLAS DAQ DataFlow, and identifies the Ethernet features required for a proper operation of the network: MAC address table size, switch performance in terms of throughput and latency, the use of Flow Control, Virtual LANs and Quality of Service. We investigate these features on some Ethernet switches, and conclude on their usefulness for the ATLAS DataFlow network.

Abstract:In high-energy physics (HEP), both the exclusion and discovery of new theories depend not only on the acquisition of high-quality experimental data but also on the rigorous application of statistical methods. These methods provide probabilistic criteria (such as p-values) to compare experimental data with theoretical models, aiming to describe the data as accurately as possible. Hypothesis testing plays a central role in this process, as it enables comparisons between established theories and potential new explanations for the observed data. This report reviews key statistical methods currently employed in particle physics, using synthetic data and numerical comparisons to illustrate the concepts in a clear and accessible way. Our results highlight the practical significance of these statistical tools in enhancing the experimental sensitivity and model exclusion capabilities in HEP. All numerical results are estimated using Python and RooFit, a high-level statistical modeling package used by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at CERN to model and report results from experimental data.

Abstract:We present studies in bottomonium spectroscopy carried out with samples of $(98\pm1)$ million $\Upsilon(2S)$ and $(121\pm1)$ million $\Upsilon(3S)$ events recorded with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider at SLAC. Precise measurements of the branching fractions for $\chi_{b1,2}(1P, 2P)\rightarrow \gamma \Upsilon(1S)$ and $\chi_{b1,2}(2P)\rightarrow \gamma \Upsilon(2S)$ transitions, and searches for radiative decay to the $\eta_b(1S)$ and $\eta_b(2S)$ states are performed using photons that have converted into an $e^+ e^-$ pair. In addition, we summarize the results of a search for the spin-singlet partner of the $\chi_{bJ}(1P)$ triplet, the $h_b(1P)$ state of bottomonium, in the transitions $\Upsilon(3S)\rightarrow \pi^0 h_b$ and $\Upsilon(3S)\rightarrow \pi^+\pi^- h_b$.

Abstract:Using the entire BaBar $\Upsilon(4S)$ data set, the first two-dimensional unbinned angular analysis of the semileptonic decay $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overline{\nu}_\ell$ is performed, employing hadronic reconstruction of the tag-side $B$ meson from $\Upsilon(4S)\to B\overline{B}$. Here, $\ell$ denotes the light charged leptons $e$ and $\mu$. A novel data-driven signal-background separation procedure with minimal dependence on simulation is developed. This procedure preserves all multi-dimensional correlations present in the data. The expected $\sin^2\theta_\ell$ dependence of the differential decay rate in the Standard Model is demonstrated, where $\theta_\ell$ is the lepton helicity angle. Including input from the latest lattice QCD calculations and previously available experimental data, the underlying form factors are extracted using both model-independent (BGL) and dependent (CLN) methods. Comparisons with lattice calculations show flavor SU(3) symmetry to be a good approximation in the $B_{(s)}\to D_{(s)}$ sector. Using the BGL results, the CKM matrix element $|V_{cb}|=(41.09\pm 1.16)\times 10^{-3}$ and the Standard Model prediction of the lepton-flavor universality violation variable $\mathcal{R}(D)=0.300\pm 0.004$, are extracted. The value of $|V_{cb}|$ from $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overline{\nu}_\ell$ tends to be higher than that extracted using $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overline{\nu}_\ell$. The Standard Model $\mathcal{R}(D)$ calculation is at a $1.97\sigma$ tension with the latest HFLAV experimental average.

An appropriate statistical approach for nonequilibrium particle production

Abstract:The incapability of thermal models to accurately reproduce the horn-like structure of the Kaon-to-pion ratio measured at AGS, SPS, and low RHIC energies, as well as confirmed in the beam energy scan program, has long been a persistent problem. This issue is believed to have arisen due to the inappropriate application of statistics, particularly the extensive additive Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) statistics. The assumption that the analysis of particle production, a dynamic nonequilibrium process, should be primarily conducted using extensive BG or nonextensive Tsallis statistics, has proven to be an unsuccessful approach that has been followed for several decades. By employing generic (non)extensive statistics, two equivalence classes $(c,d)$ emerge, thereby undermining the validity of any ad hoc assumption. Consequently, the degree of (non)extensivity exhibited by the statistical ensemble is determined by its own characteristics. This encompasses both extensive BG statistics, characterized by $(1,1)$, and nonextensive Tsallis statistics, characterized by $(0,q)$. The energy dependence of light-, $\gamma_q$, and strange-quark occupation factor, $\gamma_s$, suggests that the produced particles are most appropriately described as a nonequilibrium ensemble. This is evidenced by a remarkable nonmonotonic behavior observed in the $\mathrm{K}^+/\pi^+$ horn, for instance. On the other hand, the resulting equivalence classes $(c,d)$ are associated with a generic nonextensivity related to extended exponential and Lambert-$W_0$ exponentially generating distribution function, which evidently arise from free, short- and long-range correlations. The incorporation of generic nonextensive statistics into the hadron resonance gas model yields an impressive ability to rightfully reproduce the nonmonotonic $\mathrm{K}^+/\pi^+$ ratio.

Abstract:We present recent results on charmless hadronic B decays using data collected by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We report measurements of branching fractions and charge asymmetries in several charmless two-body, three-body, and quasi-two-body decay modes. We also report measurements of polarization in charmless B decays to exclusive final states with two vector mesons.

Abstract:We propose a stronger formulation of the dispersive (or unitarity) bounds à la Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed (BGL), which are commonly applied in analyses of the hadronic form factors for $B$ decays. In our approach, the existing bounds are split into several new bounds, thereby disentangling form factors that are jointly bounded in the common approach. This leads to stronger constraints for these objects, to a significant simplification of our numerical analysis, and to the removal of spurious correlations among the form factors. We apply these novel bounds to $\bar{B}\to \bar{K}^{(*)}$ and $\bar{B}_s\to \phi$ form factors by fitting them to purely theoretical constraints. Using a suitable parametrization, we take into account the form factors' below-threshold branch cuts arising from on-shell $\bar{B}_s \pi^0$ and $\bar{B}_s \pi^0 \pi^0$ states, which so-far have been ignored in the literature. In this way, we eliminate a source of hard-to-quantify systematic uncertainties. We provide machine readable files to obtain the full set of the $\bar{B}\to \bar{K}^{(*)}$ and $\bar{B}_s\to \phi$ form factors in and beyond the entire semileptonic phase space.

Abstract:The analysis and the interpretation of the LHC data require a precise determination of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) in order to detect reliably potential signs of new physics. I present a systematic study designed to assess the risk of absorbing, and thus missing, signals from heavy new physics in the PDFs parameterisation during the High-Luminosity LHC run. I discuss the consequences of such a PDF "contamination" and consider possible solutions to it, for example the inclusion of other experimental data probing large-x regions at low-energy.

Abstract:We study the information content of nuclear masses from the perspective of global models of nuclear binding energies. To this end, we employ a number of statistical methods and diagnostic tools, including Bayesian calibration, Bayesian model averaging, chi-square correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and empirical coverage probability. Using a Bayesian framework, we investigate the structure of the 4-parameter Liquid Drop Model by considering discrepant mass domains for calibration. We then use the chi-square correlation framework to analyze the 14-parameter Skyrme energy density functional calibrated using homogeneous and heterogeneous datasets. We show that a quite dramatic parameter reduction can be achieved in both cases. The advantage of Bayesian model averaging for improving uncertainty quantification is demonstrated. The statistical approaches used are pedagogically described; in this context this work can serve as a guide for future applications.

Abstract:The need for accurate and precise polarised parton distribution functions (PDFs) is becoming increasingly crucial in view of the Electron-Ion Collider experimental program foreseen in the coming years. Two global PDF determinations at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy have been recently presented, MAPPDFpol1.0 and BDSSV24. I review the former and I provide a comparative discussion of other PDF sets accurate to next-to-leading order. I show that differences between these PDF sets, due to the choice of experimental and methodological input, exceed differences due to perturbative accuracy.

Abstract:The superstatistics approach recently introduced by Beck [C. Beck and E.G.D. Cohen, Physica A 322, 267 (2003)] is a formalism that aims to deal in a unifying way with a large variety of complex nonequilibrium systems, for which spatio-temporal fluctuations of one intensive variable (the "temperature" 1/b) are supposed to exist. The intuitive explanation provided by Beck for superstatistics is based on the ansatz that the system under consideration, during its evolution, travels within its phase space which is partitioned into cells. Within each cell, the system is described by ordinary Maxwell-Boltzmann statistical mechanics, i.e., its statistical distribution is the canonical one, but b varies from cell to cell, with its own probability density f(b). In this work we first address that the explicit inclusion of the density of states in this description is essential for its correctness. The correction is not relevant for developments of the theory, but points to the fact that its correct starting point, as well its meaning, must be found at a more basic level: the pure probability product rule involving the intensive variable b and its conjugate extensive one. The question therefore arises how to assign a meaning to these probabilities for each specific problem. We will see that it is easily answered through Bayesian analysis. This way, we are able to provide an interpretation for f(b), that was not fully elucidated till now.
