Abstract:We present recent results on charmless hadronic B decays using data collected by the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We report measurements of branching fractions and charge asymmetries in several charmless two-body, three-body, and quasi-two-body decay modes. We also report measurements of polarization in charmless B decays to exclusive final states with two vector mesons.

Abstract:The precise measurement of the cross section e+e- --> pi+ pi-(gamma) from threshold to an energy of 3 GeV, using events with Initial State Radiation (ISR) collected with the BABAR detector, is presented. The ISR luminosity is determined from a study of the leptonic process e+e- --> mu+ mu- gamma(gamma), and the method is tested by the comparison with the next-to-leading order (NLO) QED prediction. The leading-order hadronic contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly calculated using the BABAR pi pi cross section measured from threshold to 1.8 GeV is (514.1 +- 2.2(stat) +- 3.1(syst)) * 10^{-10}. Other results on ISR multihadronic cross sections from BABAR are presented.
Search for Bbar --> Lambda_c+ X l- nu Decays in Events With a Fully Reconstructed B Meson

Abstract:We present a search for semileptonic B decays to the charmed baryon Lambda_c+ based on 420 fb-1 of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II $e^+e^-$ storage rings. By fully reconstructing the recoiling B in a hadronic decay mode, we reduce non-B backgrounds and determine the flavor of the signal B. We statistically correct the flavor for the effect of the B0 mixing. We obtain a 90% confidence level upper limit of BF(Bbar --> Lambda_c+ X l- nubar)/BF(Bbar --> Lambda_c+ X) < 3.5 %.

Abstract:The BABAR experiment participates to the global endeavor for a precise prediction of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon by evaluating the contribution of hadronic processes to the vacuum polarization. After its last result published in 2009 and 2012, BABAR is preparing a new independent measurement of the $e^+e^- \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-(\gamma)$ cross section via initial state radiation, with full data statistics and improved uncertainties. A first milestone was reached with the recent study of additional radiations in $e^+e^- \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-(\gamma)$ and $e^+e^- \rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-(\gamma)$, which uncovered shortcomings of the Phokhara Monte Carlo generator in one-photon rates and angular distributions. This has practically no effect on the previous BABAR measurement, but could explain longstanding discrepancies with other experiments.

Abstract:This paper reports measurements of processes: e+e- -> gamma KsK+pi-, e+e- -> gamma K+K-pi0, e+e- -> gamma phi eta, and e+e- -> gamma phi pi0. The initial state radiated photon allows to cover the hadronic final state in the energy range from thresholds up to ~4.6 GeV. The overall size of the data sample analyzed is 232 fb-1, collected by the BaBar detector running at the PEP-II e+e- storage ring. From the Dalitz plot analysis of the KsK+pi- final state, moduli and relative phase of the isoscalar and the isovector components of the e+e- -> K K*(892) cross section are determined. Parameters of phi and rho recurrences are also measured, using a global fitting procedure which exploits the interconnection among amplitudes, moduli and phases of the e+e- -> KsK+pi-, K+K-pi0, phi eta final states. The cross section for the OZI-forbidden process e+e- -> phi pi0, and the J/psi branching fractions to KK*(892) and K+K-eta are also measured.

Abstract:We present studies in bottomonium spectroscopy carried out with samples of $(98\pm1)$ million $\Upsilon(2S)$ and $(121\pm1)$ million $\Upsilon(3S)$ events recorded with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider at SLAC. Precise measurements of the branching fractions for $\chi_{b1,2}(1P, 2P)\rightarrow \gamma \Upsilon(1S)$ and $\chi_{b1,2}(2P)\rightarrow \gamma \Upsilon(2S)$ transitions, and searches for radiative decay to the $\eta_b(1S)$ and $\eta_b(2S)$ states are performed using photons that have converted into an $e^+ e^-$ pair. In addition, we summarize the results of a search for the spin-singlet partner of the $\chi_{bJ}(1P)$ triplet, the $h_b(1P)$ state of bottomonium, in the transitions $\Upsilon(3S)\rightarrow \pi^0 h_b$ and $\Upsilon(3S)\rightarrow \pi^+\pi^- h_b$.

Abstract:We study the processes $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-\pi^0\pi^0\pi^0\gamma$, $K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^0\pi^0\gamma$, and $K^{0}_{S}K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^+\pi^-\gamma$ in which an energetic photon is radiated from the initial state. The data were collected with the \babar~ detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. About 1200, 2600, and 6000 events, respectively, are selected from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 469\invfb. The invariant mass of the hadronic final state defines the effective \epem center-of-mass energy. The center-of-mass energies range from threshold to 4.5\gev. From the mass spectra, the first ever measurements of the $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-\pi^0\pi^0\pi^0$, $e^+e^-\to K^0_SK^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^0\pi^0$, and $e^+e^-\to K^0_SK^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^+\pi^-$ cross sections are performed. The contributions from the intermediate states that include $\eta$, $\phi$, $\rho$, $K^*(892)$, and other resonances are presented. We observe the $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ in most of these final states and measure the corresponding branching fractions, many of them for the first time.
Recent Results from BABAR: Dark Matter, Axion-like Particles and Heavy Neutral Leptons, a contribution to the 2023 Electroweak session of the 57th Rencontres de Moriond

Abstract:Three independent searches for new physics using data collected at BABAR are presented. Firstly, two searches for dark matter and baryogenesis: $B^{0}\rightarrow \Lambda + \psi_{D}$ and $B^{+} \rightarrow p + \psi_{D}$ are detailed, where $\psi_{D}$ is a new dark fermion. Neither signal is observed and new upper limits on the branching fractions, at the 90 $\%$ confidence level (C.L), are placed at $\mathcal{O}(10^{-5} - 10^{-6})$ across the mass range $1.0< m_{\psi_{D}}<4.3$ GeV/c$^{2}$. Secondly, new limits on the coupling, $g_{aW}$, of an axion-like particle ($a$) to the $W$ boson, at the 90 $\%$ C.L, are presented at $\mathcal{O}(10^{-5})$ GeV$^{-1}$ for $a$ masses in the mass range 0.175 $<m_{a}<$ 4.78 GeV/c$^{2}$. Thirdly, a model-independent search for heavy neutral leptons (HNL) found new upper limits at the 95 $\%$ C.L on the extended Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) matrix element, $|U_{\tau 4}|^{2}$, which depend on the HNL mass hypothesis and vary from $2.31 \times 10^{-2}$ to $5.04 \times 10^{-6}$, across the mass range $100 < m_{4} < 1300$ MeV/c$^{2}$, with more stringent limits on higher HNL masses.

Recent Results on Searches for Pentaquark States from STAR at RHIC

Abstract:We present results on pentaquark searches from nuclear collisions at RHIC with the STAR detector system. An intriguing peak has been observed in the invariant mass distribution of [Formula: see text] from 18.6 Million d + Au collision events at [Formula: see text]. The peak centers at a mass 1528 ± 2 ± 5 MeV/c 2 and the FWHM ~15 MeV/c2 limited by detector responses. The statistical significance of the peak is 4.2σ. Such a state if confirmed is manifestly exotic and implies a family of isospin one states. A weak signal of less statistical significance (~3σ) has been observed in 5.6M Au + Au collision events at 62.4 GeV. Searches in 10.7M Au + Au collision events at 200 GeV yield no significant signal. The Au + Au results neither confirm nor rule out the d + Au observation as a possible state.
Inclusive $\bar{B}\to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ at the LHC: theory predictions and new-physics reach

Abstract:We present theoretical predictions for observables in inclusive $\bar{B}\to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ suitable for measurements at hadron colliders through a sum-over-exclusive approach. At low $q^2$ we calculate the branching ratio and three angular observables. At high $q^2$ we provide the branching ratio and the ratio of the $\bar B \to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ rate with respect to the inclusive $\bar B \to X_u \ell \bar\nu$ rate with the same phase-space cut. We compare our predictions to an extraction of the experimental rate through a sum-over-exclusive method using branching ratios of the exclusive $\bar B \to K^{(*)}\mu^+\mu^-$ modes measured at LHCb. Our analysis does not support a recent claim about a deficit in the inclusive branching ratio in the high-$q^2$ region. Finally, we present current model-independent bounds on new physics and emphasize the potential of complementary analyses of $\bar{B}\to X_s \ell^+\ell^-$ at Belle II and the LHC.

Inclusive and differential cross section measurements of $\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}\text{b}\bar{\text{b}}$ production in the lepton+jets channel at $\sqrt{s} = 13\text{ TeV}$

Abstract:Differential cross section measurements of the associated production of top quark and b quark pairs, $\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}\text{b}\bar{\text{b}}$, are presented. The results are based on data from proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13\text{ TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $138 \text{ fb}^{-1}$. Four fiducial phase space regions are defined targeting distinct aspects of the $\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}\text{b}\bar{\text{b}}$ process. Kinematic variables are defined at the stable particle level and distributions are unfolded to the particle level through maximum likelihood fits. The cross sections are measured in the lepton+jets decay channel of the top quark pair, using events with exactly one isolated electron or muon and at least five jets. The results are compared with predictions from several event generators. The differential measurements have relative uncertainties in the range of $2\!-\!50\%$, depending on the phase space and the observable.

Abstract:The hadronic mass spectrum of inclusive $\bar{B} \to X_s \ell^+ \ell^-$ is investigated at next to leading order in the heavy quark expansion. For mild cuts on the hadronic mass, the expansion, which applies when the cut is released, remains convergent. However, the cuts used at BaBar and Belle to reduce backgrounds from charged current semileptonic processes are too severe for a description in terms of matrix elements of local operators to apply. Strategies for interpolating between the two regions are discussed.

Abstract:Using the entire BaBar $\Upsilon(4S)$ data set, the first two-dimensional unbinned angular analysis of the semileptonic decay $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overline{\nu}_\ell$ is performed, employing hadronic reconstruction of the tag-side $B$ meson from $\Upsilon(4S)\to B\overline{B}$. Here, $\ell$ denotes the light charged leptons $e$ and $\mu$. A novel data-driven signal-background separation procedure with minimal dependence on simulation is developed. This procedure preserves all multi-dimensional correlations present in the data. The expected $\sin^2\theta_\ell$ dependence of the differential decay rate in the Standard Model is demonstrated, where $\theta_\ell$ is the lepton helicity angle. Including input from the latest lattice QCD calculations and previously available experimental data, the underlying form factors are extracted using both model-independent (BGL) and dependent (CLN) methods. Comparisons with lattice calculations show flavor SU(3) symmetry to be a good approximation in the $B_{(s)}\to D_{(s)}$ sector. Using the BGL results, the CKM matrix element $|V_{cb}|=(41.09\pm 1.16)\times 10^{-3}$ and the Standard Model prediction of the lepton-flavor universality violation variable $\mathcal{R}(D)=0.300\pm 0.004$, are extracted. The value of $|V_{cb}|$ from $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overline{\nu}_\ell$ tends to be higher than that extracted using $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overline{\nu}_\ell$. The Standard Model $\mathcal{R}(D)$ calculation is at a $1.97\sigma$ tension with the latest HFLAV experimental average.

Abstract:Recent results on baryonic B decays from the two b-factories, BABAR and Belle, are presented. These include studies of B+ to p pbar pi+, B+ to p Lambdabar gamma and B0 to p Lambdabar pi-; observations of B+ to p Lambdabar pi0, B to Lambda_c+ Lambda_c- K, and B+ to Xibar0_c Lambda_c+; and study of the inclusive B decays to Lambda_c.

Measurement of absolute branching fractions of hadronic decays

Abstract:Using e + e − collision data collected at the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 733 fb − 1 , we determine the absolute branching fractions of fifteen hadronic decays with a double-tag technique. In particular, we make precise measurements of the branching fractions , and , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. The CP asymmetries in these decays are also measured and all are found to be compatible with zero.

Abstract:The latest results are presented of the search for new physics in inclusive dijet events recorded with the ATLAS detector. The search for resonances in the dijet mass spectrum is updated with 0.81 fb^-1 of 2011 data. The latest analysis of dijet angular distributions, with 36 pb^-1 of 2010 data, is also presented. In-depth information is provided about the model-independent search for resonances. Limits are provided for excited quarks, axigluons, scalar color octets, and to Gaussian signals that allow to set approximate limits in a model-independent way.
