Abstract:We construct the most general four-dimensional = 4 supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number n of vector multiplets in which the global scaling symmetry is gauged, in addition to a subgroup of SL(2 , R) × SO(6 , n ). The various gaugings are parametrized by an embedding tensor built out of parameters that satisfy a specific set of quadratic consistency constraints, to which we provide explicit solutions. We also derive the local supersymmetry transformation rules and the equations of motion for the four-dimensional = 4 matter-coupled supergravity with local scaling symmetry. Such supergravity theories do not possess an action, since the scaling symmetry is only an on-shell symmetry of the corresponding ungauged theories.

Cosmological Correlators at Finite Coupling

Abstract:We study finite-coupling effects of QFT on a rigid de Sitter (dS) background taking the $O(N)$ vector model at large $N$ as a solvable example. Extending standard large $N$ techniques to the dS background, we analyze the phase structure and late-time four-point functions. Explicit computations reveal that the spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries is prohibited due to strong IR effects, akin to flat two-dimensional space. Resumming loop diagrams, we compute the late-time four-point functions of vector fields at large $N$, demonstrating that their spectral density is meromorphic in the spectral plane and positive along the principal series. These results offer highly nontrivial checks of unitarity and analyticity for cosmological correlators.

The Exact Effective Couplings of 4D N=2 gauge theories

Abstract:The anomalous dimensions of operators in the purely gluonic SU(2,1|2) sector of any planar conformal N=2 theory can be read off from the N=4 SYM results by replacing the N=4 coupling constant by an interpolating function of the N=2 coupling constants, to which we refer to as the effective coupling. For a large class of N=2 theories we compute the weak coupling expansion of these functions as well as the leading strong coupling term by employing supersymmetric localization. Via Feynman diagrams, we interpret our results as the relative (between N=2 and N=4) finite renormalization of the coupling constant. Using the AdS/CFT dictionary, we identify the effective couplings with the effective string tensions of the corresponding gravity dual theories. Thus, any observable in the SU(2,1|2) sector can be obtained from its N=4 counterpart by replacing the N=4 coupling constant by the universal, for a given theory, effective coupling.

Pauli-type coupling between spinors and curved spacetime

Abstract:In this study we prove that the Pauli interaction emerges when the minimal coupling recipe is applied to the non-degenerate version of the Dirac Lagrangian. The conventional Dirac Lagrangian is rendered non-degenerate if supplemented by a particular term quadratic in the derivatives of the spinors. For dimensional reasons, this non-degenerate Dirac Lagrangian is associated with a length parameter $\ell$. It yields the standard free Dirac equation in Minkowski space. However, if the Dirac spinor is minimally coupled to gauge fields, then the length parameter~$\ell$ becomes a physical coupling constant yielding novel interactions. For the U($1$) symmetry the Pauli coupling of fermions to electromagnetic fields arises, modifying the fermion's magnetic moment. We discuss the impact of these findings on electrodynamics, and estimate the upper bound of the length parameter~$\ell$ from the yet existing discrepancy between the (SM) theory and measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of light leptons. This, and also recent studies of the renormalization theory, suggest that the Pauli coupling of leptons to the electromagnetic field is a necessary ingredient in QED, supporting the notion of a fundamental nature of the non-degenerate Dirac Lagrangian. In a second step we then investigate how analogous "Pauli-type" couplings of gravity and matter arise if fermions are embedded in curved spacetime. The diffeomorphism and Lorentz invariance of that system leads to an anomalous spin-torsion interaction and a curvature-dependent mass correction. We calculate the mass correction in the De~Sitter geometry of vacuum with the cosmological constant $\Lambda$. Possible implications for the existence of effective non-zero rest masses of neutrinos are addressed. Finally, an outlook on the impact of mass correction on the physics of "Big Bang" cosmology, black holes, and of neutron stars is provided.

Exact strong coupling results in $\cal N$=2 $Sp(2N)$ superconformal gauge theory from localization

Abstract:We apply the localization technique to compute the free energy on four-sphere and the circular BPS Wilson loop in the four-dimensional $\cal N$=2 superconformal $Sp(2N)$ gauge theory containing vector multiplet coupled to four hypermultiplets in fundamental representation and one hypermultiplet in rank-2 antisymmetric representation. This theory is unique among similar $\cal N$=2 superconformal models that are planar-equivalent to $\cal N$=4 SYM in that the corresponding localization matrix model has the interaction potential containing single-trace terms only. We exploit this property to show that, to any order in large $N$ expansion and an arbitrary 't Hooft coupling $\lambda$, the free energy and the Wilson loop satisfy Toda lattice equations. Solving these equations at strong coupling, we find remarkably simple expressions for these observables which include all corrections in $1/N$ and $1/\sqrt{\lambda}$. We also compute the leading exponentially suppressed ${\cal O}(e^{-\sqrt{\lambda}})$ corrections and consider a generalization to the case when the fundamental hypermultiplets have a non-zero mass. The string theory dual of this $\cal N$=2 gauge theory should be a particular orientifold of AdS$_5 \times S^5$ type IIB string and we discuss the string theory interpretation of the obtained strong-coupling results.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking To GR in SO(4,2) Gravitational Yang-Mills Theory

Abstract:We consider a Yang-Mills type gauge theory of gravity based on the conformal group SO(4,2) coupled to a conformally invariant real scalar field. The goal is to generate fundamental dimensional constants via spontaneous breakdown of the conformal symmetry. In the absence of other matter couplings the resulting theory resembles Weyl-Einstein gravity, {with the Newton constant given by the square of the (constant) vacuum expectation value of the scalar, the cosmological constant determined by the quartic coupling constant of the scalar field and the Weyl to Einstein transition scale determined by the Yang-Mills coupling constant.} The emergent theory in the long-wave-length limit is Einstein gravity with cosmological constant. As an illustrative example we present an exact spherically symmetric cosmological solution with perfect fluid energy-momentum tensor that reduces to $\Lambda$FRW in the long-wavelength limit.

Abstract:Theory of Supersymmetric Quantum Electrodynamics is extended by interactions with external vector and tensor backgrounds, that are assumed to be generated by some Lorentz-violating (LV) dynamics at an ultraviolet scale perhaps related to the Planck scale. Exact supersymmetry requires that such interactions correspond to LV operators of dimension five or higher, providing a solution to the naturalness problem in the LV sector. We classify all dimension five and six LV operators, analyze their properties at the quantum level and describe observational consequences of LV in this theory. We show that LV operators do not induce destabilizing D-terms, gauge anomaly and the Chern-Simons term for photons. We calculate the renormalization group evolution of dimension five LV operators and their mixing with dimension three LV operators, controlled by the scale of the soft-breaking masses. Dimension five LV operators are constrained by the low-energy precision measurements at 10^{-10}-10^{-5} level in units of the inverse Planck scale, while the Planck-scale suppressed dimension six LV operators are allowed by observational data.

Deformation of d=4, N> 4 Supergravities Breaks Nonlinear Local Supersymmetry

Abstract:We study d=4, $N\geq 5$ supergravities and their deformation via candidate counterterms, with the purpose to absorb UV divergences. We generalize the earlier studies of deformation and twisted self-duality constraint to the case with unbroken local H-symmetry in presence of fermions. We find that the deformed action breaks nonlinear local supersymmetry. We show that all known cases of enhanced UV divergence cancellations are explained by nonlinear local supersymmetry. This result implies, in particular, that if N=5 supergravity at five loop will turn out to be UV divergent, the deformed theory will be BRST inconsistent. If it will be finite, it will be a consequence of nonlinear local supersymmetry and E7-type duality.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the multi component fields interactions of the complex scalar fields and the electromagnetic fields (Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system) on four dimensional Minkowski spacetime with general gauge couplings and the scalar potential turned on. Moreover, the complex scalar fields span an internal manifold assumed to be Kähler. Then, by taking the Kähler potential to be bounded above $U(1)^N$ symmetric Kähler potential, the gauge couplings to be bounded functions, and the scalar potential to be the form of either polynomial, sine-Gordon, or Toda potential, we prove the global existence of the system.

Abstract:We consider a scalar quantum field theory with global $O(N)^3$ symmetry in four Euclidean dimensions and solve it numerically in closed form in the large-N limit. For imaginary tetrahedral coupling the theory is asymptotically free, with stable and real quantum effective action. We demonstrate the dynamical build-up of a strong interaction as the correlation length increases in a regime where the coupling renormalization flow remains well defined in the infrared. This is in contrast to perturbative results of asymptotically free theories, which predict that the coupling becomes ill-defined in the infrared, like in quantum chromodynamics. These properties make the model an important laboratory for the study of strong-coupling phenomena in quantum field theory from first principles.

Cubic and higher-order supergravity couplings for AdS vacua using Exceptional Field Theory

Abstract:We show how to use Exceptional Field Theory to efficiently compute $n$-point couplings of all Kaluza-Klein modes for vacua that can be uplifted from maximal gauged supergravities to 10/11 dimensions via a consistent truncation. Via the AdS/CFT correspondence, these couplings encode the $n$-point functions of holographic conformal fields theories. Our methods show that these $n$-point couplings are controlled by the $n$-point invariant of scalar harmonics of the maximally symmetric point of the truncation, allowing us to show that infinitely-many $n$-point couplings vanish for any vacua of the truncation, even though they may be allowed by the remnant symmetry group of the vacua. This gives new results even for the maximally supersymmetric AdS$_5 \times S^5$, AdS$_4 \times S^7$ and AdS$_7 \times S^4$ vacua of string and M-theory, where we prove old conjectures about the vanishing of $n$-point extremal and near-extremal couplings. Focusing in particular on cubic couplings for vacua of 5-dimensional gauged supergravity, we derive explicit universal formulae encoding these couplings for any vacuum within a consistent truncation. We use this to compute known and new couplings involving spin-0, spin-1, spin-2 for the AdS$_5 \times S^5$ vacuum of IIB string theory.

Coupling Fields to 3D Quantum Gravity via Chern-Simons Theory

Abstract:We propose a mechanism that couples matter fields to three-dimensional quantum gravity, which can be used for theories with a positive or negative cosmological constant. Our proposal is rooted in the Chern-Simons formulation of three-dimensional gravity and makes use of the Wilson spool, a collection of Wilson loops winding around closed paths of the background. We show that the Wilson spool correctly reproduces the one-loop determinant of a free massive scalar field on rotating black holes in AdS$_3$ and Euclidean dS$_3$ as $G_N\to 0$. Moreover, we describe how to incorporate quantum metric fluctuations into this formalism.

Abstract:Electric and magnetic Fayet-Ilioupulous (FI) terms are used to engineer partial breaking of ${\mathcal{N}=2}$ global supersymmetry for systems of vector multiplets. The magnetic FI term induces a deformation of the off-shell field transformations associated with an imaginary constant shift of the triplet of auxiliary fields of the vector multiplet. In this paper, we elaborate on the deformation of off-shell vector multiplets in supergravity, both in components and superspace. In a superconformal framework, the deformations are associated with (composite) linear multiplets. We engineer an off-shell model that exhibits partial local supersymmetry breaking with a zero cosmological constant. This is based on the hyper-dilaton Weyl multiplet introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2203.12203" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.12203">arXiv:2203.12203</a>, coupled to the SU(1,1)/U(1) special-Kähler sigma model in a symplectic frame admitting a holomorphic prepotential, with one compensating and one physical vector multiplet, the latter magnetically deformed.
