Abstract:The emission and absorption attributes of the UV-blue nuclear spectra of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are analyzed based on high quality archival HST observations. Measurements from composite spectra as well as from individual sources reveal differences from the more general AGN samples: NLS1s have steeper (redder) UV-blue continua. Objects with UV line absorption show redder spectra, suggesting that internal dust is important in modifying the continuum shapes. A strong relationship is found between the slopes of the power-laws that best fit the UV-blue continua and the luminosities: the more luminous sources have bluer SEDs. This trend is possibly attributed to a luminosity-dependent inner geometry of the obscuring (dusty) material.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve mainly focus on the emission and absorption characteristics of NLS1 (Narrow - Line Seyfert 1) galaxies in the ultraviolet to blue - light band. Specifically, by analyzing the high - resolution archived data of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the authors attempt to: 1. **Determine the spectral characteristics of NLS1 galaxies in the ultraviolet to blue - light band**: including their continuum shape, emission - line features, and the presence of absorption lines. 2. **Explain why the continuum of NLS1 galaxies is redder than that of other more general active galactic nucleus (AGN) samples**: It has been found that NLS1 galaxies have a steeper (redder) ultraviolet - to - blue - light continuum, and this characteristic is related to the luminosity of the galaxy. Low - luminosity NLS1 galaxies show a redder continuum. 3. **Explore the influence of internal dust on the continuum of NLS1 galaxies**: The paper mentions that in nearly half of the samples, absorption phenomena close to the systemic velocity of the host galaxy are observed, indicating that internal dust may play an important role in changing the continuum shape of these galaxies. 4. **Simulate the influence of dust on the continuum of NLS1 galaxies**: By simulating the dust - obscuration effect at different luminosities, researchers attempt to explain the observed relationship between the continuum slope and luminosity (i.e., the α - L relationship). The simulation results show that the variation of the dust - covering angle with luminosity can well explain this trend. In summary, the main objective of this paper is to explore the unique spectral characteristics of NLS1 galaxies and the reasons behind them through a detailed analysis of their ultraviolet - to - blue - light spectra, especially how these characteristics are related to the luminosity and internal dust distribution of the galaxies.
