Abstract:We explore the chiral aspects of extrapolation of observables calculated within lattice QCD, using the nucleon magnetic moments as an example. Our analysis shows that the biggest effects of chiral dynamics occur for quark masses corresponding to a pion mass below 600 MeV. In this limited range chiral perturbation theory is not rapidly convergent, but we can develop some understanding of the behaviour through chiral quark models. This model dependent analysis leads us to a simple Pad\'e approximant which builds in both the limits $m_\pi \to 0$ and $m_\pi \to \infty$ correctly and permits a consistent, model independent extrapolation to the physical pion mass which should be extremely reliable.
The QCD Vacuum as a Disordered Chromomagnetic Condensate

Abstract:An attempt is made to describe from first principles the large-scale structure of the confining vacuum in quantum chromodynamics. Starting from our previous variational studies of the SU(2) pure gauge theory in an external Abelian chromomagnetic field and extending Feynman’s qualitative analysis in (2+1)-dimensional SU(2) gauge theory, we show that the SU(3) vacuum in three-space and one-time dimensions behaves like a disordered chromomagnetic condensate. Color confinement is assured by the presence of a mass gap together with the absence of color long-range correlations. We offer a clear physical picture for the formation of the flux tube between static quark charges that allows us to determine the color structure and the transverse profile of the flux-tube chromoelectric field. The transverse profile of the flux-tube chromoelectric field turns out to be in reasonable agreement with lattice data. We, also, show that our quantum vacuum allows for both the color and ordinary Meissner effect. We find that for massless quarks, the quantum vacuum can accommodate a finite non-zero density of fermion zero modes leading to the dynamical breaking of the chiral symmetry.

Electromagnetic effects on topological observables in QCD

Abstract:In this proceedings article we present a selected set of our lattice results regarding the effect that background electromagnetic fields have on the topology of QCD. In particular, we report on the lattice spacing-dependence of the axion-photon coupling as well as on the response of the topological susceptibility to strong magnetic fields at nonzero temperatures. We demonstrate that the ratio of topological susceptibilities at finite to zero magnetic field has a well behaved continuum limit at low temperatures using a reweighting technique. Moreover, we study the scaling of the axion-photon coupling towards the continuum limit and show that it is less severely affected by discretisation effects.

Abstract:We investigate the non-perturbative effects on the ratio R=σL/σT in lepton-nucleon deep inelastic scattering by taking into account the lowest dimensional condensate contributions from the QCD vacuum. By combining conventional perturbative QCD corrections and the Georgi-Politzer target-mass effects with the non-perturbative effects from the QCD vacuum, we give a good description of the Q2 and x dependences of R in comparison with the recent experimental data.

Abstract:In this talk, I present my personal view on the status of lattice QCD calculations. I emphasize the role played by the chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) in analyzing the lattice data of various physical quantities, including chiral condensate, topological susceptibility, and pion mass and decay constant. I then discuss on the status of determination of fundamental parameters and other quantities of phenomenological interest.

Abstract:I introduce and explore a range of topics of contemporary interest in hadronic physics: from what drives the formation of a nonzero quark condensate to the effect that mechanism has on light and heavy meson form factors, and the properties of the quark-gluon plasma. The trail leads naturally through a discussion of confinement, dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and bound state structure: phenomena that require nonperturbative methods for their explanation. In all of this, the necessary momentum-dependent modification of the quark and gluon propagators plays a significant role.
A Multiple-Grid-Patch Evolution Scheme for 3-D Black Hole Excision

Abstract:When using black hole excision to numerically evolve a fully generic black hole spacetime, most 3-D 3+1 codes use an $xyz$-topology (spatial) grid. In such a grid, an $r = \constant$ excision surface must be approximated by an irregular and non-smooth "staircase-shaped" excision grid boundary, which may introduce numerical instabilities into the evolution. In this paper I describe an alternate scheme, which uses multiple grid patches, each with topology $\{r \times ({\rm angular coordinates})\}$, to cover the slice outside the $r = \constant$ excision surface. The excision grid boundary is now smooth, so the evolution should be less prone to instabilities. With 4th order finite differencing, this code evolves Kerr initial data to ${\sim} 60M$ using the ADM equations; I'm currently implementing the BSSN equations in it in the hope that this will improve the stability.

Full QCD with milder topological freezing

Abstract:We simulate $N_f=2+1$ QCD at the physical point combining open and periodic boundary conditions in a parallel tempering framework, following the original proposal by M. Hasenbusch for $2d$ $\mathrm{CP}^{N-1}$ models, which has been recently implemented and widely employed in $4d$ $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ pure Yang-Mills theories too. We show that using this algorithm it is possible to achieve a sizable reduction of the auto-correlation time of the topological charge in dynamical fermions simulations both at zero and finite temperature, allowing to avoid topology freezing down to lattice spacings as fine as $a \sim 0.02$ fm. Therefore, this implementation of the Parallel Tempering on Boundary Conditions algorithm has the potential to substantially push forward the investigation of the QCD vacuum properties by means of lattice simulations.

Investigating two-dimensional adjoint QCD on the lattice

Abstract:We present our investigations of SU($N$) adjoint QCD in two dimensions with one Majorana fermion on the lattice. We determine the relevant parameter range for the simulations with Wilson fermions and present results for Polyakov loop, chiral condensate, and string tension. In the theory with massive fermions, all observables we checked show qualitative agreement between numerical lattice data and theory, while the massless limit is more subtle since chiral and non-invertible symmetry of the continuum theory are explicitly broken by lattice regularization. In thermal compactification, we observe $N$ perturbative vacua for the holonomy potential at high-$T$ with instanton events connecting them, and a unique vacuum at low-$T$. At finite-$N$, this is a cross-over and it turns to a phase transition at large-$N$ thermodynamic limit. In circle compactification with periodic boundary conditions, we observe a unique center-symmetric minimum at any radius. In continuum, the instantons in the thermal case carry zero modes (for even $N$) and indeed, in the lattice simulations, we observe that chiral condensate is dominated by instanton centers, where zero modes are localized. We present lattice results on the issue of confinement vs. screening in the theory and comment on the roles of chiral symmetry and non-invertible symmetry.

After summarizing what is known about the equilibrium properties of strongly interacting matter, I discuss in more detail recent results concerning the quark-mass dependence of the thermal phase transition and the status of calculations of non-equilibrium properties.

Abstract:Confining configurations are introduced into the standard instanton vacuum model. This drastically improves theoretical properties of the vacuum: instanton size density $d(\rho)$ stabilizes at $\rho\sim 0.2 fm$, all chiral effects are formulated in a gauge-invariant way and quarks are confined. An interesting interplay of chiral and confining dynamics is observed; for the realistic values of parameters the Georgi-Manohar picture emerges with chiral radius $R_{ch}\sim \rho\sim 0.2 fm$ much less than confining radius $R_c\sim$ hadron radius $\sim 1 fm$. In the limit $R_{ch}\ll R_c$ the chiral mass $M_{ch}(p)$ is unaffected by confinement and can be taken in the local limit $M_{ch}(p=0)$. Different types of effective chiral Lagrangians (ECL) are obtained, containing all or a part of gluon, quark and Nambu--Goldstone--meson fields. The ECL are manifestly gauge--invariant and in the limit of no gluon fields coincide with those found previously. The problem of the double role of the pion -- as a Goldstone meson or as a $q\bar{q}$ system is briefly disscussed using confining ECL with quarks, mesons and gluons.
Monopoles of the Dirac type and color confinement in QCD -- Study of the continuum limit

Abstract:Non-Abelian gauge fields having a line-singularity of the Dirac type lead us to violation of the non-Abelian Bianchi identity. The violation as an operator is equivalent to violation of Abelian-like Bianchi identities corresponding to eight Abelian-like conserved magnetic monopole currents of the Dirac type in $SU(3)$ QCD. It is very interesting to study if these new Abelian-like monopoles are responsible for color confinement in the continuum $SU(3)$ QCD, since any reliable candidate of color magnetic monopoles is not known yet. If these new Abelian-like monopoles exist in the continuum limit, the Abelian dual Meissner effect occurs, so that the linear part of the static potential between a quark-antiquark pair is reproduced fully by those of Abelian and monopole static potentials. These phenomena are called here as perfect Abelian and monopole dominances. It is shown that the perfect Abelian dominance is reproduced fairly well, whereas the perfect monopole dominance seems to be realized for large $\beta$ when use is made of the smooth lattice configurations in the maximally Abelian (MA) gauge. Making use of a block spin transformation with respect to monopoles, the scaling behaviors of the monopole density and the effective monopole action are studied. Both monopole density and the effective monopole action which are usually a two-point function of $\beta$ and the number of times $n$ of the block spin transformation are a function of $b=na(\beta)$ alone for $n=1,2,3,4,6,8,12$. If the scaling behavior is seen for up to larger $n$, it shows the existence of the continuum limit, since $a(\beta)\to 0$ when $n\to\infty$ for fixed $b=na(\beta)$. Along with the previous results without any gauge fixing, these new results obtained in MA gauge suggest that the new Abelian-like monopoles play the role of color confinement in $SU(3)$ QCD.

Abstract:In the past few years, we have presented a new way of considering quark confinement. Through a careful choice of a Cho-Duan-Ge Abelian Decomposition, we can construct the QCD Wilson Loop in terms of an Abelian restricted field. The relationship between the QCD and restricted string tensions is exact; and we do not need to gauge fix, apply any path ordering of gauge links, or additional path integrals. This hints at why mesons are colour neutral. Furthermore, the Abelian restricted field contains two parts: a Maxwell term, and a topological term. The topological term can describe magnetic monopoles and other topological objects, which can be studied both numerically and theoretically. By examining the topological part of the restricted field strength we have found evidence suggesting that these objects, which will contribute to confinement if present, are indeed there. Previous studies have used simplifications, breaking the exact relationship between the restricted and QCD string tensions, but it was found that the topological term dominated the restricted string tension. Here we remove those simplifications, and show that the Abelian restricted field does indeed fully explain confinement. However, our results for how much of the restricted string tension arises from the topological objects show strong dependence on the lattice spacing and level of smearing, so we are not yet able to draw a definitive conclusion.

Abstract:A systematic study is made of the non-perturbative effects in quantum chromodynamics. The basic object is the two-point functions of various currents. At large Euclidean momenta q the non-perturbative contributions induce a series in (μ2/q2) where μ is some typical hadronic mass. The terms of this series are shown to be of two distinct types. The first few of them are connected with vacuum fluctuations of large size, and can be consistently accounted for within the Wilson operator expansion. On the other hand, in high orders small-size fluctuations show up and the high-order terms do not reduce (generally speaking) to the vacuum-to-vacuum matrix elements of local operators. This signals the breakdown of the operator expansion. The corresponding critical dimension is found. We propose a Borel improvement of the power series. On one hand, it makes the two-point functions less sensitive to high-order terms, and on the other hand, it transforms the standard dispersion representation into a certain integral representation with exponential weight functions. As a result we obtain a set of the sum rules for the observable spectral densities which correlate the resonance properties to a few vacuum-to-vacuum matrix elements. As the last bid to specify the sum rules we estimate the matrix elements involved and elaborate several techniques for this purpose.

Abstract:These lecture notes illustrate the application of Dyson-Schwinger equations in QCD. The extensive body of work at zero temperature and chemical potential is represented by a selection of contemporary studies that focus on solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation, deriving an exact mass formula in QCD that describes light and heavy pseudoscalar mesons simultaneously, and the calculation of the electromagnetic pion form factor and the vector-meson electroproduction cross sections. These applications emphasize the qualitative importance of the momentum-dependent dressing of elementary Schwinger functions in QCD, which provides a unifying connection between disparate phenomena. They provide a solid foundation for an extension of the approach to nonzero temperature and chemical potential. The essential, formal elements of this application are described, and four contemporary studies are employed to exemplify the method and its efficacy. They study the demarcation of the phase boundary for deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration, the calculation of bulk thermodynamic properties of the quark-gluon plasma, and the response of pi- and rho- meson observables to T and mu. Along the way a continuum order parameter for deconfinement is introduced, an anticorrelation between the response of masses and decay constants to T and their response to mis elucidated, and a (T, mu) mirroring of the slow approach of bulk thermodynamic quantities to their ultrarelativistic limit is highlighted. Abstract:In a planetary or satellite system, idealized as n small bodies in initially coplanar, concentric orbits around a large central body, obeying Newtonian point-particle mechanics, resonant perturbations will cause dynamical evolution of the orbital radii except under highly specific mutual relationships, here derived analytically apparently for the first time. In particular, the most stable situation is achieved (in this idealized model) only when each planetary orbit is roughly twice as far from the Sun as the preceding one, as observed empirically already by Titius (1766) and Bode (1778) and used in both the discoveries of Uranus (1781) and the Asteroid Belt (1801).
