Abstract:X-ray binaries, as bright local sources with short variability timescales for a wide range of accretion processes, represent ideal targets for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. In this chapter, we present a high-resolution X-ray spectral perspective on X-ray binaries, focusing on black holes and neutron stars. The majority of the chapter is devoted to observational and theoretical signatures of mass ejection via accretion disk winds: we discuss their appearance (including an overview of photoionization and thermodynamic processes that determine their visibility in X-ray spectra) and their life cycles (including efforts to constrain their time-dependent mass loss rates), and we provide a broad overview of the primary accretion disk wind driving mechanisms that have been considered in the literature: (1) radiation pressure, where radiation accelerates a wind by scattering off electrons or atoms in the disk or its atmosphere; (2) thermal driving, where Compton heating of the outer accretion disk causes gas thermal velocities to exceed the local escape speed; and (3) magnetohydrodynamic processes, where gas may be ejected from the disk via magnetic pressure gradients or magnetocentrifugal effects. We then turn to spectroscopic constraints on the geometry of accreting systems, from relativistically blurred emission lines to dipping sources, clumpy, structured stellar winds, and baryonic jets. We conclude with discussions of measurements of the interstellar medium and the potential of next-generation high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy for X-ray binaries.

Abstract:Ultraluminous X-ray binaries have challenged our assumptions of extreme accretion rates in X-ray binaries, and impact other subfields of astronomy, such as cosmology, gravitational wave sources and supernovæ. Our understanding of ULXs has changed tremendously over the last 35 years, and we now know that ULXs can be powered by accreting neutron stars as well as black holes, and can be found in a wide range of stellar environments. In this chapter, we introduce the observational techniques used to discover and characterize ULXs, and discuss our current understanding of their unique accretion physics and formation channels.

The First High-Contrast Images of Near High-Mass X-Ray Binaries with Keck/NIRC2

Abstract:Although the study of X-ray binaries has led to major breakthroughs in high-energy astrophysics, their circumbinary environment at scales of $\sim$100--10,000 astronomical units has not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, we undertake a novel and exploratory study by employing direct and high-contrast imaging techniques on a sample of X-ray binaries, using adaptive optics and the vortex coronagraph on Keck/NIRC2. High-contrast imaging opens up the possibility to search for exoplanets, brown dwarfs, circumbinary companion stars, and protoplanetary disks in these extreme systems. Here, we present the first near-infrared high-contrast images of 13 high-mass X-ray binaries located within $\sim$2--3 kpc. The key results of this campaign involve the discovery of several candidate circumbinary companions ranging from sub-stellar (brown dwarf) to stellar masses. By conducting an analysis based on galactic population models, we discriminate sources that are likely background/foreground stars and isolate those that have a high probability ($\gtrsim 60 - 99\%$) of being gravitationally bound to the X-ray binary. This publication seeks to establish a preliminary catalog for future analyses of proper motion and subsequent observations. With our preliminary results, we calculate the first estimate of the companion frequency and the multiplicity frequency for X-ray binaries: $\approx$0.6 and 1.8 $\pm$ 0.9 respectively, considering only the sources that are most likely bound to the X-ray binary. In addition to extending our comprehension of how brown dwarfs and stars can form and survive in such extreme systems, our study opens a new window to our understanding of the formation of X-ray binaries.

Abstract:ABSTRACT MAXI J1820+070 is a low-mass black hole X-ray binary system with high luminosity in both optical and X-ray bands during its outburst periods. We present extensive photometry in the X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical bands, as well as densely cadenced optical spectra, covering the phase from the beginning of the optical outburst to ∼550 days. During the rebrightening process, the optical emission precedes the X-ray by 20.80 ± 2.85 days. The spectra are characterized by blue continua and emission features of Balmer series, He i, and He ii lines and a broad Bowen blend. The pseudo equivalent widths (pEWs) of emission lines are found to show anticorrelations with the X-ray flux measured at comparable phases, due to increased suppression by the optical continuum. At around the X-ray peak, the full widths at half-maximum (FWHMs) of Hβ and He ii λ4686 tend to stabilize at 19.4 and 21.8 Å, corresponding to the line-forming regions at radii of 1.7 and 1.3 R⊙ within the disc. We further analysed the absolute fluxes of the lines and found that the fluxes of Hβ and He ii λ4686 show positive correlations with the X-ray flux, favouring the suggestion that the irradiation model is responsible for the optical emission. However, the fact that X-ray emission experiences a dramatic flux drop at t ∼ 200 days after the outburst, while the optical flux only shows a little variation, suggests that additional energy such as viscous energy may contribute to the optical radiation, in addition to X-ray irradiation.

Abstract:The majority of all stars are members of a binary system. The evolution of such binary stars and their subsequent production of pairs of compact objects in tight orbits, such as double neutron stars and double black holes, play a central role in modern astrophysics, Binary evolution leads to the formation of different types of violent cosmic events such as novae, supernova explosions, gamma-ray bursts, mass transfer and accretion processes in X-ray binaries, and the formation of exotic radio millisecond pulsars. In some cases, the binary systems terminate as spectacular collisions between neutron stars and/or black holes. These collisions lead to powerful emission of gravitational waves, as detected by LIGO since 2015. The coming decade is expected to reveal a large number of discoveries of binary compact systems, as well as their progenitors and merger remnants, from major instruments such as the radio Square-Kilometre Array; the gravitational wave observatories LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA-IndIGO and LISA; the astrometric space observatory Gaia; the James Webb Space Telescope; and the X-ray space observatories eXTP, STROBE-X, and Athena. In this light, it is important to have a modern textbook on the physics of binary stars evolution, from ordinary stars to X-ray binaries and gravitational wave sources. The scope of this book is that the reader (student or educated expert) will learn the physics of binary interactions, from stellar birth to compact objects, and relate this knowledge to the latest observations. The reader will learn about stellar structure and evolution, and detailed binary interactions covering a broad range of phenomena, including mass transfer and orbital evolution, formation and accretion onto compact objects (white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes), and their observational properties. Exercises are provided throughout the book.

Abstract:A common question about compact objects in high energy astrophysics is whether it is possible to distinguish black hole from neutron star systems with some other property that is not the mass of the compact object. Up to now a few characteristics have been found which are typical of neutron stars (like quasi periodic oscillations at kHz frequencies or type-I X-ray bursts), but in many respects black hole and neutron star systems show very similar behaviors. We present here a spectral study of low mass X-ray binaries containing neutron stars and show that these systems have spectral characteristics that are very similar to what is found for black hole systems. This implies that it is unlikely we can distinguish between black holes and neutron stars from their X-ray spectra, except for the fact that black hole systems show sometimes a more extreme behavior with respect to neutron star systems.

Abstract:Fifty years ago, borrowing an idea from our Russian friends Guseinov and Zeldovich, we looked for very compact stars (neutron stars and black holes, in modern terminology) as optically-invisible components of single-line spectroscopic binaries. We didn't find any, but our method was very close to the processes that soon identified neutron stars in the X-ray sources Sco X-1, Cen X-3, and so forth, and the first persuasive black hole in Cyg X-1 (HD 226868). Here we look again at the events of 1962-72, revealing a bit more than we knew then, and attempt to bring the story up to date with an overview of some of the enormous richness of astronomical sources now generally thought to consist of a neutron star or black hole, or in a few cases one of each in a binary system.

Abstract:The high luminosity of massive, early-type stars drives strong stellar winds through line scattering of the stars continuum radiation. Their momenta contribute substantially to the dynamics and energetics of the ambient interstellar medium in galaxies. The detailed multi-wavelength study of massive O-type and Wolf-Rayet binaries is essential to explore the hydrodynamics of the shocks formed in the stellar outflows and wind structure. Further, deep analysis of some of the interesting phenomena like particle acceleration and dust formation associated with hot stars winds provides a global view of stellar outflows. In this context, a few massive binaries have been explored using photometric and spectroscopic measurements in different wavebands. This paper highlights important insights gained from investigating massive binaries with several ground and space-based facilities.

Abstract:The rapid variability of X-ray binaries produces a wide range of X-ray states that are linked to activity across the electromagnetic spectrum. It is particularly challenging to study a sample of sources large enough to include all types in their various states, and to cover the full range of frequencies that show flux density variations. Simultaneous observations with many telescopes are necessary. In this project we monitor 48 X-ray binaries with seven telescopes across the electromagnetic spectrum from 5 x 10^9 Hz to 10^19 Hz, including ground-based radio, IR, and optical observatories and five instruments on two spacecraft over a one-week period. We construct spectral energy distributions and matching X-ray color-intensity diagrams for 20 sources that have the most extensive detections. Our observations are consistent with several models of expected behavior proposed for the different classes: we detect no significant radio emission from pulsars or atoll sources, but we do detect radio emission from Z sources in the normal or horizontal branch, and from black holes in the high/soft, low/hard and quiescent states. The survey data provide useful constraints for more detailed models predicting behavior from the different classes of sources.

Insights on the Optical and Infrared Nature of MAXI J0709-159: Implications for High-Mass X-ray Binaries

Abstract:In our previous study (Bhattacharyya et al., 2022), HD~54786, the optical counterpart of the MAXI J0709-159 system, was identified to be an evolved star, departing from the main sequence, based on comparisons with non-X-ray binary systems. In this paper, using color-magnitude diagram (CMD) analysis for High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) and statistical t-tests, we found evidence supporting HD 54786's potential membership in both Be/X-ray binaries (BeXRBs) and supergaint X-ray binaries (SgXBs) populations of HMXBs. Hence, our study points towards dual optical characteristics of HD~54786, as an X-ray binary star and also belonging to a distinct evolutionary phase from BeXRB towards SgXB. Our further analysis suggests that MAXI J0709-159, associated with HD 54786, exhibits low-level activity during the current epoch and possesses a limited amount of circumstellar material. Although similarities with the previously studied BeXRB system LSI +61$^{\circ}$ 235 (Coe et al., 1994) are noted, continued monitoring and data collection are essential to fully comprehend the complexities of MAXI J0709-159 and its evolutionary trajectory within the realm of HMXBs.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of classifying observations when features are context-sensitive, specifically when the testing set involves a context that is different from the training set. The paper begins with a precise definition of the problem, then general strategies are presented for enhancing the performance of classification algorithms on this type of problem. These strategies are tested on two domains. The first domain is the diagnosis of gas turbine engines. The problem is to diagnose a faulty engine in one context, such as warm weather, when the fault has previously been seen only in another context, such as cold weather. The second domain is speech recognition. The problem is to recognize words spoken by a new speaker, not represented in the training set. For both domains, exploiting context results in substantially more accurate classification.

Abstract:Optical and X-ray observations are presented here of a newly reported X-ray transient system in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The data reveal many previously unknown X-ray detections of this system and clear evidence for a 49.995d binary period. In addition, the optical photometry show recurring outburst features at the binary period which may well be indicative of the neutron star interacting with a circumstellar disk around a Be star.

HST/STIS UV Spectroscopy of Two Quiescent X-ray Novae: A0620-00 and Centaurus X-4

Abstract:In 1998 we made UV spectroscopic observations with HST/STIS of A0620-00 and Cen X-4, which are two X-ray novae (aka soft X-ray transients). These binary systems are similar in all respects except that the former contains a black hole and the latter contains a neutron star. A UV spectrum (1700-3100A) is presented for the quiescent state of each system in the context of previously published UV/optical and X-ray data. The non-stellar, continuum spectrum of black hole A0620-00 has a prominent UV/optical peak centered at about 3500A. In contrast the spectrum of neutron-star Cen X-4 lacks a peak and rises steadily with frequency over the entire UV/optical band. In the optical, the two systems are comparably luminous. However, black hole A0620-00 is about 6 times less luminous at 1700A, and about 40 times less luminous in the X-ray band. The broadband spectrum of A0620-00 is discussed in terms of the advection-dominated accretion flow model.

Abstract:We carried out spectroscopic observations of the candidate black-hole binary GX339-4 during its low-hard and high-soft X-ray states, in 1997 and 1998 respectively. We have found that the spectrum is dominated by emission lines of neutral elements with asymmetric, round-topped profiles in the low-hard state (probably due to a dense matter outflow from an inflated outer disk). In the high-soft state, however, the emission lines from both neutral and ionized elements have unambiguously resolved double-peaked profiles; this indicates the presence of an irradiatively-heated thin accretion disk. Higher-ionization lines have larger peak-to-peak velocity separations. Our data do not show velocity modulations of the line centres due to the orbital motion of the compact object; there are no detectable lines from the companion star. These features are consistent with those of a system with a low-mass companion star and low orbital inclination. More results (from the 1999 low-hard state) coming soon in Paper II, stay tuned...

COMPACT OPTICAL COUNTERPARTS OF ULTRALUMINOUS X-RAY SOURCES

Abstract:Using archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging data, we report the multiband photometric properties of 13 ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) that have a unique compact optical counterpart. Both magnitude and color variation are detected at timescales of days to years. The optical color, variability, and X-ray to optical flux ratio indicate that the optical emission of most ULXs is dominated by X-ray reprocessing on the disk, similar to that of low-mass X-ray binaries. For most sources, the optical spectrum is a power law, Fν∝να with α in the range 1.0–2.0 and the optically emitting region has a size on the order of 1012 cm. Exceptions are NGC 2403 X-1 and M83 IXO 82, which show optical spectra consistent with direct emission from a standard thin disk, M101 ULX-1 and M81 ULS1, which have X-ray to optical flux ratios more similar to high-mass X-ray binaries, and IC 342 X-1, in which the optical light may be dominated by the companion star. Inconsistent extinction between the optical counterpart of NGC 5204 X-1 and the nearby optical nebulae suggests that they may be unrelated.
The origin of optical emission lines in the soft state of X-ray binary outbursts: the case of MAXI J1820+070

Abstract:The optical emission line spectra of X-ray binaries (XRBs) are thought to be produced in an irradiated atmosphere, possibly the base of a wind, located above the outer accretion disc. However, the physical nature of - and physical conditions in - the line-forming region remain poorly understood. Here, we test the idea that the optical spectrum is formed in the transition region between the cool, geometrically thin part of the disc near the mid-plane and a hot, vertically extended atmosphere or outflow produced by X-ray irradiation. We first present a VLT X-Shooter spectrum of XRB MAXI J1820+070 in the soft state associated with its 2018 outburst, which displays a rich set of double-peaked hydrogen and helium recombination lines. Aided by ancillary X-ray spectra and reddening estimates, we then model this spectrum with the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code Python, using a simple biconical disc wind model inspired by radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of irradiation-driven outflows from XRB discs. Such a model can qualitatively reproduce the observed features; nearly all of the optical emission arising from the transonic 'transition region' near the base of the wind. In this region, characteristic electron densities are on the order of 10$^{12-13}$ cm$^{-3}$, in line with the observed flat Balmer decrement (H$\alpha$/H$\beta \approx 1.3$). We conclude that strong irradiation can naturally give rise to both the optical line-forming layer in XRB discs and an overlying outflow/atmosphere that produces X-ray absorption lines.

Coronal X-Ray Emission from the Stellar Companions to Transiently Accreting Black Holes

Abstract:Observations of soft X-ray transients (SXTs) in quiescence have found that the binaries harboring black holes are fainter than those that contain a neutron star. Narayan and collaborators postulated that the faint X-ray emission from black hole binaries was powered by an advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF). We explore an alternative explanation for the quiescent X-ray emission from the black hole systems: coronal emission from the rapidly rotating optical companion. This is commonly observed and well studied in other tidally locked binaries, such as the RS CVns. We show that two of the three X-ray detected black hole binaries (A0620-00 and GRO J1655-40) exhibit X-ray fluxes entirely consistent with coronal emission. The X-ray spectra of these objects should be best fit with thermal Raymond-Smith models rich in lines when coronal emission predominates. One black hole system (V404 Cyg) is too X-ray bright to be explained as coronal emission. The quiescent X-ray emission from the neutron star binaries is far too bright for coronal emission. It might be that all SXT's have variable accretion rates in quiescence and that the basal quiescent X-ray flux is set by either coronal emission from the companion or -- when present -- by thermal emission from the neutron star. We also show that the lithium abundances in the black hole systems are comparable to those in the RS CVns, reducing the need for production mechanisms that involve the compact object.

Links Between Optical and X-ray Light in Cygnus X-2

Abstract:We observed the low mass X-ray binary Cyg X-2 for a total of 18 nights over two observing runs in July and September of 2006, using the Otto Struve Telescope at McDonald Observatory and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. Using discrete cross correlations, we found peaks occurring at near-zero lags in the flaring branch of the colour-colour diagram, which could signify reprocessing, in addition to an anti-correlation within the normal branch. When comparing optical flux to the system's placement on the Z track, two distinct behaviors were seen: (1) a state with no correlation, and (2) a multi-valued (horizontal and normal branches)/correlated (flaring branch) state. The correlation was the result of direct steps and more gradual falls to and from the flaring branch respectively. Finally, we modeled timed spectra with 64 second bins with an extended accretion disc corona model. We found that correlations occurred between the optical and the various fitted parameters, particularly the blackbody normalization (and blackbody radius by extension) in higher intensity regions. Despite this, the Z track location was found to be a far better predictor of physical parameters than the optical flux, with clean correlations seen in every branch of the Z track. Where optical correlations are found, the location on the Z track was a better predictor of optical flux than any individual physical parameter.
