Abstract:Astronomical observations of the orbital angular momentum of photons, a property of electromagnetic radiation that has come to the fore in recent years, have apparently never been attempted. Here, I show that measurements of this property of photons have a number of astrophysical applications.

Abstract:A series of novel state-vector functions (SVFs), which is the general solution of the Schrödinger equation for a photon, are constructed. Each set of these functions consists of a triplet of eigen-SVFs: The triplet can be broken down into a pair of nonzero l-order functions and a single zero-order function. The photons, described with a triplet of eigen-SVFs, possess all the quantum characteristics of a photon: In addition to common attributes like energy E = ħ ω , and momentum p z = ħ κ , they also exhibit different angular momenta (AM) L z+ = lħ, L z− = lħ, and L z0 = 0, where l⩾1. In other words, in addition to usual eigenvalues L z±= ±ħ, there are unusual nonzero l-order eigenvalues L z± = ±lħ and a zero-order eigenvalue L z0 = 0 for AM of a photon. By a series of SVFs, the pattern from nonzero l-order and zero-order Laguerre-Gaussian modes of a laser beam is explained well from a quantum mechanical point of view.

Abstract:On the basis of comparing Maxwell equation for a light wave to Schrodinger equation for a photon, we conclude that the former solution that must be a real function is the real part of the latter solution that must be a complex function. Using the state-vector function that is the general solution of Schrodinger equation for a photon, we solve some true but strange optical problems including the simple demonstration of Malus's Law and the orthogonal decomposition of a natural light.
Photon orbital angular momentum and torque metrics for single telescopes and interferometers

Abstract:Context. Photon orbital angular momentum (POAM) is normally invoked in a quantum mechanical context. It can, however, also be adapted to the classical regime, which includes observational astronomy. Aims. I explain why POAM quantities are excellent metrics for describing the end-to-end behavior of astronomical systems. To demonstrate their utility, I calculate POAM probabilities and torques from holography measurements of EVLA antenna surfaces. Methods. With previously defined concepts and calculi, I present generic expressions for POAM spectra, total POAM, torque spectra, and total torque in the image plane. I extend these functional forms to describe the specific POAM behavior of both single telescopes and interferometers. Results. POAM probabilities of spatially uncorrelated astronomical sources are symmetric in quantum number. Such objects thus have zero intrinsic total POAM on the celestial sphere, which means that the total POAM in the image plane is identical to the total torque induced by aberrations within propagation media and instrumentation. The total torque can be divided into source- independent and dependent components, and the latter can be written in terms of three illustrative forms. For interferometers, complications arise from discrete sampling of synthesized apertures, but they can be overcome. POAM also manifests itself in the apodization of each telescope in an array. Holography measurements of EVLA antennas observing a point source indicate that ~ 10% of photons in the n = 0 state are torqued to n ≠ 0 states. Conclusions. POAM quantities represent excellent metrics for characterizing instruments because they are based on real physics and are used to simultaneously describe amplitude and phase aberrations. In contrast, Zernike polynomials are just solutions of a differential equation that happen to ~ correspond to specific types of aberrations (e.g., tip-tilt, focus, etc.) and are typically employed to fit only phases. Possible future studies include forming POAM quantities with real interferometry visibility data, modeling instrumental aberrations and turbulence of the troposphere/ionosphere in terms of POAM, POAM-based imaging algorithms and constraints, POAM-based super resolution imaging, and POAM observations of astrophysically important sources.

Abstract:Light contains both spin and orbital angular momentum. Despite contributing equally to the total photonic angular momentum, these components derive from quite different parts of the electromagnetic field profile, namely its polarization and spatial variation, respectively, and therefore do not always share equal influence in light–matter interactions. With the growing interest in utilizing light's orbital angular momentum to practice added control in the study of atomic systems, it becomes increasingly important for students and researchers to understand the subtlety involved in these interactions. In this article, we present a review of the fundamental concepts and recent experiments related to the interaction of beams containing orbital angular momentum with atoms. An emphasis is placed on understanding light's angular momentum from the perspective of both classical waves and individual photons. We then review the application of these beams in recent experiments, namely single- and few-photon transitions, strong-field ionization, and high-harmonic generation, highlighting the role of light's orbital angular momentum and the atom's location within the beam profile within each case.

Analysis of angular momentum properties of photons emitted in fundamental atomic processes

Abstract:Many atomic processes result in the emission of photons. Analysis of the properties of emitted photons, such as energy and angular distribution as well as polarization, is regarded as a powerful tool for gaining more insight into the physics of corresponding processes. Another characteristic of light is the projection of its angular momentum upon propagation direction. This property has attracted a special attention over the last decades due to studies of twisted (or vortex) light beams. Measurements being sensitive to this projection may provide valuable information about the role of angular momentum in the fundamental atomic processes. Here we describe a simple theoretical method for determination of the angular momentum properties of the photons emitted in various atomic processes. This method is based on the evaluation of expectation value of the total angular momentum projection operator. To illustrate the method, we apply it to the text-book examples of plane-wave, spherical-wave, and Bessel light. Moreover, we investigate the projection of angular momentum for the photons emitted in the process of the radiative recombination with ionic targets. It is found that the recombination photons do carry a non-zero projection of the orbital angular momentum.

Abstract:The identification of orbital angular momentum (OAM) as a fundamental property of a beam of light nearly 25 years ago has led to an extensive body of research around this topic. The possibility that single photons can carry OAM has made this degree of freedom an ideal candidate for the investigation of complex quantum phenomena and their applications. Research in this direction has ranged from experiments on complex forms of quantum entanglement to the interaction between light and quantum states of matter. Furthermore, the use of OAM in quantum information has generated a lot of excitement, as it allows for encoding large amounts of information on a single photon. Here, we explain the intuition that led to the first quantum experiment with OAM 15 years ago. We continue by reviewing some key experiments investigating fundamental questions on photonic OAM and the first steps to applying these properties in novel quantum protocols. At the end, we identify several interesting open questions that could form the subject of future investigations with OAM. This article is part of the themed issue ‘Optical orbital angular momentum’.

Abstract:Radiation from a localized, oscillating charge distribution can have angular momentum that cannot be explained in classical electrodynamics. We consider the simplest example -- electric dipole radiation of a single photon -- and show that this angular momentum is attributable to zero-point oscillations in unexcited states of the dipole source.

Abstract:The expression for the total angular momentum carried by a laser optical vortex beam, splits, in the paraxial approximation, into two terms which seem to represent orbital and spin angular momentum respectively. There are, however, two very different competing versions of the formula for the spin angular momentum, one based on the use of the Poynting vector, as in classical electrodynamics, the other related to the canonical expression for the angular momentum which occurs in Quantum Electrodynamic. I analyze the possibility that a sufficiently sensitive optical measurement could decide which of these corresponds to the actual physical angular momentum carried by the beam.

Manipulating Orbital Angular Momenta of Photons by Transformation Media

Abstract:We propose a scheme to controllably convert the wavefront of an arbitrary incident beam into a helical one by compact transformation slabs, thus enabling the output beam to carry desirable orbital angular momentum (OAM). First, based on transformation optics, a three-dimensional (3D) phase transformation between any two wavefronts by °at transformation media is established and then used to mold a wavefront of Gaussian beam into a helical one. Second, 3D FDTD simulations are performed to confirm the spiraling evolutions of the resultant field and phase, clearly demonstrating OAM generated. Further theoretical analyses show that the refractive index exhibiting a helical distribution leads to the oppositely spiral phase front and that it is feasible to produce desirable OAM by generators of unit OAM. The results not only provide an additional way to manipulate phase and photon OAM, but reciprocally shed further light on the phase structure of helical beams, which leads to a new transformation way by a surface.

Abstract:The thirty-six papers in this special issue focus on orbital angular momentum photonics. It is well known that angular momentum carried by elementary particles can be categorized as spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM). Since the early 1900's, Poynting recognized that a particle, such as a photon, can carry SAM, which has only two possible states. However, only recently, in 1992, Allen et al. discovered that photons with helical phase fronts can carry OAM, which has infinite orthogonal states. Since its discovery, the OAM-carrying beam has gained increasing interest from many different research communities, including physics, chemistry, and engineering, enabling tremendous advances in fundamental theories, devices, and applications. Due to its unique characteristics, OAM Photonics has opened new possibilities in various applications, including micromanipulation, laser beam machining, nonlinear matter interactions, imaging, sensing, quantum cryptography and, classical communications. During the past decade OAM Photonics has grown tremendously, and the field has turned out to be an extremely prosperous research area. This Special Issue provides a snapshot on the latest state of the art for the OAM Photonics field.

Abstract:The Heisenberg uncertainty principle suggests that it is impossible to determine the trajectory of a quantum particle in the same way as a classical particle. However, we may still yield insight into novel behavior of photons based on the average photon trajectories (APTs). Here we explore the APTs of optical fields carrying spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM) under the paraxial condition. We define the helicity and differential helicity for unveiling the three-dimensional spiral structures of the APTs of optical fields carrying the SAM and/or the OAM. We clarify the novel behaviors of the APTs caused by the SAM and OAM as well as the SAM-OAM coupling. The APT concept is also very helpful for profoundly understanding trapped particle motion and has the potential to elucidate other physical systems. Due to the presence of the helical path caused by the SAM and/or the OAM, the actual traveling distance of the photons might be much longer than the geometric distance.

Abstract:In this talk, we devote to explore the the average photon trajectories (APTs) under the paraxial circumstance. The APTs provide an intuitive picture for unveiling the angular momentum of photons, involving the SAM and the OAM as well as the coupling between them. The results reveal that the SAM and the OAM result both in the helical three-dimensional APTs. Due to the presence of the helical path caused by the SAM and/or the OAM, the actual traveling distance of the photons might be much longer than the geometric distance. The APT concept is very helpful for unveiling the angular momentum of photons and for understanding the behavior of the motion of the trapped particles in the tweezer experiment, and can also be promised to elucidate other physical systems.

Abstract:We analyze the effect of Proca mass and orbital angular momentum of photons imposed by a structured plasma in Kerr-Newman and Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter spacetimes. The presence of characteristic lengths in a turbulent plasma converts the virtual Proca photon mass on orbital angular momentum, with the result of decreasing the virtual photon mass. The combination of this plasma effect and that of the gravitational field leads to a new astrophysical phenomenon that imprints a specific distribution of orbital angular momentum into different frequencies of the light emitted from the neighborhood of such a black hole. The determination of the orbital angular momentum spectrum of the radiation in different frequency bands leads to a complete characterization of the electrostatic and gravitational field of the black hole and of the plasma turbulence, with fundamental astrophysical and cosmological implications.

Abstract:The insight that a beam of light can carry orbital angular momentum (AM) in its propagation direction came up in 1992 as a surprise. Nevertheless, the existence of momentum and AM of an electromagnetic field has been well known since the days of Maxwell. We compare the expressions for densities of AM in general three-dimensional modes and in paraxial modes. Despite their classical nature, these expressions have a suggestive quantum mechanical appearance, in terms of linear operators acting on mode functions. In addition, paraxial wave optics has several analogies with real quantum mechanics, both with the wave function of a free quantum particle and with a quantum harmonic oscillator. Abstract:Like the eletron, the photon carries spin and orbital angular momentum caused by the polarization and the spatial phase distribution of light, respectively. Since the first observation of an optical vortex beam with orbital angular momentum (OAM), the use of an optical vortex beam has led to further studies on the light-matter interaction, the quantum nature of light, and a number of applications. In this article, using a metasurface with geometrical phase, we introduce the fundamental origins and some important applications of light with spin-orbit angular momentum as examples, including optical vortex tweezer and quantum entanglement of the spin-orbital angular momentum.

Abstract:<p>A traveling wave or wave packet may possess orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the form of a phase vortex about its axis of propagation. These OAM states are a general wave property and can exist in single‐particle wave packets, in a beam of unstructured wave packets of particles, or in a mixture. While OAM states of photons were first created almost thirty years ago, more recently work has been done to create these states with massive particles: electrons and neutrons. OAM waves can be generated by various techniques, including by passing an unstructured wave through a vortex phase plate. This technique is reliant on each particle adequately sampling the area of the vortex plate. While laser sources provide sufficient transverse coherence, beams of massive particles are more challenging. If incident wave packets do not interrogate the discontinuity at the center of the vortex phase plate, the probability of detecting a single particle having a unit of OAM about the packet center decreases substantially and the expectation value of OAM about that center vanishes. Here, using laser light, we examine restricting the transverse size of a beam to either illuminate the discontinuity or not and consider the implications for producing orbital angular momentum in individual neutrons.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:In recent years, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light with a central phase singularity composed of a specific topological charge has attracted increasing attentions. In addition to the wide range of applications of OAM in optical manipulations and optical communications, the special angular spatial structure of OAM offers irreplaceable advantages for use in rotation measurement. Because of the relationship between OAM and angular position, the azimuthal information of optical fields can be acquired via detection of OAM. Several techniques based on this concept have been proposed to sense objects remotely using their angular motion. This article introduces the applications of OAM in object orientation recognition, rotation sensing, small angle measurement and rotating object imaging.

Abstract:We demonstrate the Fourier relationship between angular position and angular momentum for a light mode. In particular we measure the distribution of orbital angular momentum states of light that has passed through an aperture and verify that the orbital angular momentum distribution is given by the complex Fourier-transform of the aperture function. We use spatial light modulators, configured as diffractive optical components, to define the initial orbital angular momentum state of the beam, set the defining aperture, and measure the angular momentum spread of the resulting beam. These measurements clearly confirm the Fourier relationship between angular momentum and angular position, even at light intensities corresponding to the single photon level.

Abstract:In this diploma thesis we study the characteristics of electromagnetic fields carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) by analyzing and utilizing results achieved in optics and then apply them to the radio domain to enable innovative radio studies of space and the development of new concepts in wireless communications. With the recent advent of fast digital converters it has become possible, over a wide radio frequency range, to manipulate not only the modulation properties of any given signal carried by a radio beam, but also the physical field vectors which make up the radio beam itself. Drawing inferences from results obtained in optics and quantum communication research during the past 10-15 years, we extract the core information about fields carrying orbital angular momentum. We show that with this information it is possible to design an array of antennas which, together with digital receivers/transmitters, can readily produce, under full software control, a radio beam that carries electromagnetic orbital angular momentum, a classical electrodynamics quantity known for a century but so far preciously little utilized in radio, if at all. This electromagnetic field is then optimized with the help of various antenna array techniques to improve the radio vector field qualities. By explicit numerical solution of the Maxwell equations from first principles, using a de facto industrial standard antenna software package, we show that the field indeed carries orbital angular momentum, and give a hint on how to detect and measure orbital angular momentum in radio beams. Finally, we discuss and give an explanation of what this can be used for and what the future might bring in this area.
