Abstract:Radiation from a localized, oscillating charge distribution can have angular momentum that cannot be explained in classical electrodynamics. We consider the simplest example -- electric dipole radiation of a single photon -- and show that this angular momentum is attributable to zero-point oscillations in unexcited states of the dipole source.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is a phenomenon that cannot be explained in classical electrodynamics: an electromagnetic field that oscillates in a symmetric mode and theoretically should not carry angular momentum can carry angular momentum after quantization. This phenomenon was first proposed by Dicke, who believed that this angular momentum originated from the zero - point oscillations of unoccupied states. By analyzing the simplest case of single - photon emission from an electric dipole transition, this paper shows that this angular momentum can indeed be attributed to the zero - point oscillations of the unexcited states of the electric dipole source. Specifically, the paper first reviews Landau and Lifshitz's derivation of the rate of change of the angular momentum of the electric dipole field, avoiding the use of the Abraham radiation reaction hypothesis and not relying on time - averaging. Next, the paper discusses in detail the angular momentum of the electric dipole oscillator radiation, including both the classical theory and the quantum - mechanical treatment methods. In the quantum - mechanical part, the author uses the raising and lowering operators in the Heisenberg picture to derive the relationship between the change in the angular momentum of a single - photon emission from an electric dipole transition and the zero - point oscillations. Finally, by analyzing the system in different initial states, the paper shows how zero - point oscillations can lead to a non - zero mean - square value of the angular momentum carried by the quantum system even in the classical case where there is no obvious angular momentum. In summary, the paper aims to explain and verify the "paradox" proposed by Dicke regarding the relationship between the photon angular momentum and zero - point oscillations within the framework of quantum mechanics through a detailed analysis.
