Abstract:We review the present status of the Baikal Neutrino Project, present updated results on the search for high energy extraterrestrial neutrinos, fast magnetic monopoles and neutrinos induced by WIMP annihilation in the center of the Earth and compare the recorded atmospheric neutrino flux to predictions. We describe the moderate upgrade of NT-200 toward $\sim$10 Mton scale detector NT-200 +.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper mainly discusses the latest research progress of the Baikal Neutrino Telescope (BAIKAL Neutrino Telescope), aiming to address the following key issues: 1. **Detection and Calibration of Atmospheric Neutrinos**: - The study verifies the existence of atmospheric neutrinos by detecting muons passing through the detector from below. These muons serve as important calibration tools, helping researchers understand the performance of the detector. - The paper reports 84 upward-moving muon events, consistent with the 80.5 events predicted by Monte Carlo simulations. 2. **Search for Neutrinos from Dark Matter (WIMP) Annihilation**: - By looking for nearly vertically upward-moving muon signals, the research team attempts to detect neutrinos produced by the annihilation of dark matter particles at the Earth's center. - No significant excess signal was observed, resulting in improved upper limit constraints that are more stringent than previous results. 3. **Search for Relativistic Magnetic Monopoles**: - Relativistic magnetic monopoles (β > 0.75) are identified by their high light output, even if they are beyond the geometric boundaries of the detector. - Through improved analysis of data from 1996 to 1999, the research team derived upper limit constraints about two times lower than previous results and compared them with results from other experiments. 4. **Search for High-Energy Neutrinos from Outer Space**: - The research team detects high-energy neutrinos from outer space by searching for bright cascade events produced in large volumes of water. - The background mainly consists of bright bremsstrahlung flashes produced along the downward muon path. Candidate events did not show statistically significant excess relative to the simulated background. - Assuming a neutrino spectrum shape of E^-2 and a flavor ratio of νe:νµ:ντ = 1:1:1, the new preliminary 90% confidence level upper limit is Φ νeE^2 = 4×10^-7 cm^-2 s^-1 sr^-1 GeV, about two times lower than previous limits. 5. **Upgrade of NT-200+**: - The upgrade version of NT-200, NT-200+, is described, which adds three sparsely instrumented outer strings, thereby increasing the detection sensitivity for high-energy cascades. - The sensitivity of NT-200+ will be four times that of NT-200, with only a 20% increase in optical modules. Overall, the paper aims to further advance the research on atmospheric neutrinos, neutrinos from dark matter annihilation, relativistic magnetic monopoles, and high-energy neutrinos from outer space through the latest data from the Baikal Neutrino Telescope.
