Abstract:Grid computing is becoming a new computing infrastructure for large-scale scientific computation and cooperative work. The Globus toolkit is the most popular grid environment and de facto grid standard, and it has adopted OGSA architecture to provide applications with grid service level. This study focuses on the requirement for scientists in engineering computation field and narrows the gap between grid service and the engineering community. The engineering computation architecture supplies the users with a visual application development and deployment environment for engineering computation. The whole is characterized by grid service. At the same time, QoS driven user-centric scheduling, community-based efficient authorization and flexible task management are designed and implemented.

Abstract:This paper proposes an Extensible Monitoring and Discovery Service for grid environment MASSIVE (MEMDS). The MASSIVE project focuses on developing a multidisciplinary applications-oriented simulation and visualization environment. In the MEMDS, appropriate mechanisms make custom information services established and deployed easily, and the developed APIs simplify the access to the MDS and provide a uniform interface for programmers. Corresponding practices show that the MEMDS improves the extensibility and flexibility of the grid information service.

Abstract:To get the distributed and autonomous equipments in equipment grid(EG) work collaboratively to serve users as a "supper virtual equip", "dynamic service composition (DSC)", a five-layered implemental framework is put forward. Via solving the sub- problems in each layer, simple services from local equipments are combined into complex ones to realize the collaborative sharing. And an EG prototype has been established based on DSC.

Abstract:High-performance distributed computing often requires careful selection and configuration of computers, networks, application protocols, and algorithms. In grid environment, the participators of domains provide site information by default that may be not adequate for resources manager to achieve optimal performance. In this paper, an Extensible Information Service Architecture (EISA) is described to resolve this problem. EISA supports a virtual organization participator's autonomous control of local resources. It consists of three layers, the registration and deployment layer, normalization and organization layer, and information collection layer. Dynamic information services in EISA could be deployed and extended easily. EISA improves the extensibility of grid information services and the efficiency of resources utilization.

Abstract:We present status and results of AstroGrid-D, a joint effort of astrophysicists and computer scientists to employ grid technology for scientific applications. AstroGrid-D provides access to a network of distributed machines with a set of commands as well as software interfaces. It allows simple use of computer and storage facilities and to schedule or monitor compute tasks and data management. It is based on the Globus Toolkit middleware (GT4).Chapter 1 describes the context which led to the demand for advanced software solutions in Astrophysics, and we state the goals of the project.We then present characteristic astrophysical applications that have been implemented on AstroGrid-D in chapter 2. We describe simulations of different complexity, compute-intensive calculations running on multiple sites (Section 2.1), and advanced applications for specific scientific purposes (Section 2.2), such as a connection to robotic telescopes (Section 2.2.3). We can show from these examples how grid execution improves e.g. the scientific workflow.Chapter 3 explains the software tools and services that we adapted or newly developed. Section 3.1 is focused on the administrative aspects of the infrastructure, to manage users and monitor activity. Section 3.2 characterises the central components of our architecture: The AstroGrid-D information service to collect and store metadata, a file management system, the data management system, and a job manager for automatic submission of compute tasks.We summarise the successfully established infrastructure in chapter 4, concluding with our future plans to establish AstroGrid-D as a platform of modern e-Astronomy.

Abstract:In this paper we report on the first two years of running the CERN testbed site for the EU DataGRID project. The site consists of about 120 dual-processor PCs distributed over several testbeds used for different purposes: software development, system integration, and application tests. Activities at the site included test productions of MonteCarlo data for LHC experiments, tutorials and demonstrations of GRID technologies, and support for individual users analysis. This paper focuses on node installation and configuration techniques, service management, user support in a gridified environment, and includes considerations on scalability and security issues and comparisons with "traditional" production systems, as seen from the administrator point of view.

Abstract:The seamless access to large quantities of distributed, heterogeneous geospatial data/ information is still a critical issues to Earth science exploration and applications now. Using Grid computing and geospatial standards technologies, we devise an open, reusable, optimized, secured and service-oriented computing environment for semi-automatically archiving, sharing and serving geospatial data/information in the way that user required. The environment uses a Grid service- oriented architecture based on the Globus toolkits. The most important of them are the data/information retrieval mediator (DIRM) and data/information serving mediator (DISM). DIRM is based on our refined geospatial metadata for describing geospatial data/information and services and Globus replica manger service for managing replicas of massive data. DISM consists of Grid-enabled geospatial standard services for providing on-the-fly user-customable data. This environment offers an open, secure, ubiquitous and standard-compliant geospatial computing platform to provide Earth science communities with access to massive geospatial data for high-performance, data- and computing-intensive scientific research and applications.

Abstract:It is now common for academic institutes, government sectors and commercial corporations all over the world to engage in collaborative, complex applications. Most of them require international and interoperable access to large quantities of distributed, heterogeneous geospatial data, services, computing abilities and other facilities. The open grid services architecture (OGSA) implemented through the globus toolkit, provides an applicable and convenient software infrastructure for securely sharing computational resources within a virtual organization. In this paper, based on the globus toolkit, we propose an open, reusable, optimized, standards-compliant, and grid-enabled geospatial software system for archiving, managing, querying and serving NASA earth observing system data. We apply grid technologies to OGC Web services to make them grid-enabled and deploy them into the system. These services can be invoked either by OGC users or by grid users in the grid environment. Any OGSA-compliant grid services can be deployed into the system, and can invoke or be invoked by our or other grid services in our virtual organization to securely access each other's data and other computational resources after we authorize access. A catalogue service federation (CSF) with an OGC standard interface is developed to interact with other grid or non-grid geospatial catalogue services for querying and serving much more geospatial data. An intelligent grid service mediator (iGSM) and replica optimization service (ROS), both of which are grid services, are proposed to distribute and optimize user requests for data and services in the system. Abstract:Service-oriented Grid technologies are increasingly utilized for the realization of future biomedical IT infrastructures since they offer unprecedented opportunities for the integration of advanced analysis and simulation applications as well as distributed heterogeneous data sources and information systems. The European Union's @neurIST project is developing a Grid-based IT infrastructure for the management of all processes linked to research, diagnosis, and treatment development for complex and multifactorial diseases encompassing data repositories, computational analysis services, and information systems handling multiscale, multimodal information at distributed sites. This paper provides an overview of the @neurIST Grid middleware and outlines the infrastructure offered for the provision of advanced compute and data services to support computationally demanding modeling and simulation tasks and to access heterogeneous distributed data sources through semantic integration.

Abstract:Understanding the earth's climate system and how it might be changing is a preeminent scientific challenge. Global climate models are used to simulate past, present, and future climates, and experiments are executed continuously on an array of distributed supercomputers. The resulting data archive, spread over several sites, currently contains upwards of 100 TB of simulation data and is growing rapidly. Looking toward mid-decade and beyond, we must anticipate and prepare for distributed climate research data holdings of many petabytes. The Earth System Grid (ESG) is a collaborative interdisciplinary project aimed at addressing the challenge of enabling management, discovery, access, and analysis of these critically important datasets in a distributed and heterogeneous computational environment. The problem is fundamentally a Grid problem. Building upon the Globus toolkit and a variety of other technologies, ESG is developing an environment that addresses authentication, authorization for data access, large-scale data transport and management, services and abstractions for high-performance remote data access, mechanisms for scalable data replication, cataloging with rich semantic and syntactic information, data discovery, distributed monitoring, and Web-based portals for using the system.

An Implementation of Data Grid Middleware DGM Based on WSRF and WSN

Abstract:Data grid, as one of the concernful grids, demands an efficient middleware for grid services and datasets management. This paper proposes a design scheme of the Data Grid Middleware (DGM), which follows the WSRF and WSN specifications. DGM is applied to the breast cancer grid and meets the demands of grid services, grid datasets and data notifications, using APIs and toolkits provided by Globus Toolkit4 (GT4). Both the architecture and the implementation process are introduced. To indicate the cooperative operating pattern of DGM's function modules, an application instance and a performance testing are proposed. Results show the feasibility and efficiency of DGM.
Towards automation of computing fabrics using tools from the fabric management workpackage of the EU DataGrid project

Abstract:The EU DataGrid project workpackage 4 has as an objective to provide the necessary tools for automating the management of medium size to very large computing fabrics. At the end of the second project year subsystems for centralized configuration management (presented at LISA'02) and performance/exception monitoring have been delivered. This will soon be augmented with a subsystem for node installation and service configuration, which is based on existing widely used standards where available (e.g. rpm, kickstart, init.d scripts) and clean interfaces to OS dependent components (e.g. base installation and service management). The three subsystems together allow for centralized management of very large computer farms. Finally, a fault tolerance system is being developed for tying together the above subsystems to form a complete framework for automated enterprise computing management by 3Q03. All software developed is open source covered by the EU DataGrid project license agreements. This article describes the architecture behind the designed fabric management system and the status of the different developments. It also covers the experience with an existing tool for automated configuration and installation that have been adapted and used from the beginning to manage the EU DataGrid testbed, which is now used for LHC data challenges.

Abstract:From n-Tier client/server applications, to more complex academic Grids, or even the most recent and promising industrial Clouds, the last decade has witnessed significant developments in distributed computing. In spite of this conceptual heterogeneity, Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) seem to have emerged as the common underlying abstraction paradigm. Suitable access to data and applications resident in SOAs via so-called Science Gateways has thus become a pressing need in various fields of science, in order to realize the benefits of Grid and Cloud infrastructures. In this context, authors have consolidated work from three complementary experiences in European projects, which have developed and deployed large-scale production quality infrastructures as Science Gateways to support research in breast cancer, paediatric diseases and neurodegenerative pathologies respectively. In analysing the requirements from these biomedical applications the authors were able to elaborate on commonly faced Grid development issues, while proposing an adaptable and extensible engineering framework for Science Gateways. This paper thus proposes the application of an architecture-centric Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) approach to service-oriented developments, making it possible to define Science Gateways that satisfy quality of service requirements, execution platform and distribution criteria at design time. An novel investigation is presented on the applicability of the resulting grid MDE (gMDE) to specific examples, and conclusions are drawn on the benefits of this approach and its possible application to other areas, in particular that of Distributed Computing Infrastructures (DCI) interoperability.

Abstract:We present the design and implementation of a semantics-enabled service discovery framework in the data Grids for process and product development using numerical simulation and knowledge discovery (SIMDAT) Pharma Grid, an industry-oriented Grid environment for integrating thousands of Grid-enabled biological data services and analysis services. The framework consists of three major components: the Web ontology language (OWL)-description logic (DL)-based biological domain ontology, OWL Web service ontology (OWL-S)-based service annotation, and semantic matchmaker based on the ontology reasoning. Built upon the framework, workflow technologies are extensively exploited in the SIMDAT to assist biologists in (semi)automatically performing in silico experiments. We present a typical usage scenario through the case study of a biological workflow: IXodus.

Abstract:The CMS Integration Grid Testbed (IGT) comprises USCMS Tier-1 and Tier-2 hardware at the following sites: the California Institute of Technology, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, the University of California at San Diego, and the University of Florida at Gainesville. The IGT runs jobs using the Globus Toolkit with a DAGMan and Condor-G front end. The virtual organization (VO) is managed using VO management scripts from the European Data Grid (EDG). Gridwide monitoring is accomplished using local tools such as Ganglia interfaced into the Globus Metadata Directory Service (MDS) and the agent based Mona Lisa. Domain specific software is packaged and installed using the Distrib ution After Release (DAR) tool of CMS, while middleware under the auspices of the Virtual Data Toolkit (VDT) is distributed using Pacman. During a continuo us two month span in Fall of 2002, over 1 million official CMS GEANT based Monte Carlo events were generated and returned to CERN for analysis while being demonstrated at SC2002. In this paper, we describe the process that led to one of the world's first continuously available, functioning grids.

Abstract:The Grid and Cloud User Support Environment (gUSE) enables users convenient and easy access to grid and cloud infrastructures by providing a general purpose, workflow-oriented graphical user interface to create and run workflows on various Distributed Computing Infrastructures (DCIs). Its arrangements for creating and modifying existing workflows are, however, non-intuitive and cumbersome due to the technologies and architecture employed by gUSE. In this paper, we outline the first integrated web-based workflow editor for gUSE with the aim of improving the user experience for those with industrial data workflows and the wider gUSE community. We report initial assessments of the editor's utility based on users' feedback. We argue that combining access to diverse scalable resources with improved workflow creation tools is important for all big data applications and research infrastructures.

Abstract:We present the current status of CMS data analysis architecture and describe work on future Grid-based distributed analysis prototypes. CMS has two main software frameworks related to data analysis: COBRA, the main framework, and IGUANA, the interactive visualisation framework. Software using these frameworks is used today in the world-wide production and analysis of CMS data. We describe their overall design and present examples of their current use with emphasis on interactive analysis. CMS is currently developing remote analysis prototypes, including one based on Clarens, a Grid-enabled client-server tool. Use of the prototypes by CMS physicists will guide us in forming a Grid-enriched analysis strategy. The status of this work is presented, as is an outline of how we plan to leverage the power of our existing frameworks in the migration of CMS software to the Grid.

Abstract:Catalogue service is crucial to the sharing and utilizing of geographic information. This paper provides it new architecture and its implementation of a geographic information catalogue service that can effectively manage distributed geographic data and services. The catalogue service is based on the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Catalogue Service for Web Specification and the ebXML Registry Information Model (ebRIM). The ebRIM is extended with ISO 19115 (including draft part 2) and ISO 19119 international standards for better description of geographic information. The adoption of the ebRIM and international standards will greatly advance the interoperability of the catalogue service and the sharing of the abundant geographic information. The catalogue service is Grid-enabled to facilitate Grid's abilities of on-demand, ubiquitous access to distributed computing, data, and services resources. The Grid-enabled catalogue service is GSI-supported which enables it to interoperate with other Grid Services in a secure way. By being integrated with RLS, MDS and other Grid-enabled OGC Services, this Grid-enabled catalogue service prototype provides secure discovery, retrieval, and management of geographic data and services.

Abstract:The DREAM project was funded more than 3 years ago to design and implement a next-generation ESGF (Earth System Grid Federation [1]) architecture which would be suitable for managing and accessing data and services resources on a distributed and scalable environment. In particular, the project intended to focus on the computing and visualization capabilities of the stack, which at the time were rather primitive. At the beginning, the team had the general notion that a better ESGF architecture could be built by modularizing each component, and redefining its interaction with other components by defining and exposing a well defined API. Although this was still the high level principle that guided the work, the DREAM project was able to accomplish its goals by leveraging new practices in IT that started just about 3 or 4 years ago: the advent of containerization technologies (specifically, Docker), the development of frameworks to manage containers at scale (Docker Swarm and Kubernetes), and their application to the commercial Cloud. Thanks to these new technologies, DREAM was able to improve the ESGF architecture (including its computing and visualization services) to a level of deployability and scalability beyond the original expectations.

Abstract:By abstracting Grid middleware specific considerations from clinical research applications, re-usable services should be developed that will provide generic functionality aimed specifically at medical applications. In the scope of the neuGRID project, generic services are being designed and developed which will be applied to satisfy the requirements of neuroscientists. These services will bring together sources of data and computing elements into a single view as far as applications are concerned, making it possible to cope with centralised, distributed or hybrid data and provide native support for common medical file formats. Services will include querying, provenance, portal, anonymization and pipeline services together with a 'glueing' service for connection to Grid services. Thus lower-level services will hide the peculiarities of any specific Grid technology from upper layers, provide application independence and will enable the selection of 'fit-for-purpose' infrastructures. This paper outlines the design strategy being followed in neuGRID using the glueing and pipeline services as examples.
