Abstract:Liquid droplet whispering-gallery-mode microresonators open a new research frontier for optomechanics and photonic devices. At visible wavelengths, where most liquids are transparent, a major contribution to a droplet optical quality factor is expected theoretically from thermal surface distortions and capillary waves. Here, we investigate experimentally these predictions using transient cavity ring-down spectroscopy. In this way, the optical out-coupling and intrinsic loss are measured independently while any perturbation induced by thermal, acoustic and laser-frequency noise is avoided thanks to the ultra-short light-cavity interaction time. The measurements reveal a photon lifetime ten times longer than the thermal limit and suggest that capillary fluctuations activate surface scattering effects responsible for light coupling.

Abstract:We present high precision measurements of the radiative heat transfer of a glass microsphere immersed in a thermal bath in vacuum facing three different planar substrates (SiO2, SiC and Au), which exhibit very different optical behaviors in the infrared region. Using a thermoresistive probe on a cantilever, we show the non-monotonic behavior of the radiative flux between the microsphere and its environment when the microsphere is brought closer to the substrate in the far-field to near-field transition regime. We demonstrate that this unexpected behavior is related to the singularities of dressed emission mechanisms in this three-body system sphere-substrate-bath with respect to the separation distance.

Exceptions to Fourier's Law at the Macroscale

Abstract:The usual basis to analyze heat transfer within materials is the equation formulated 200 years ago, Fourier's law, which is identical mathematically to the mass diffusion equation, Fick's law. Revisiting this assumption regarding heat transport within translucent materials, performing the experiments in vacuum to avoid air convection, we compare the model predictions to infrared-based measurements with nearly mK temperature resolution. After heat pulses, we find macroscale non-Gaussian tails in the surface temperature profile. At steady state, we find macroscale anomalous hot spots when the sample is topographically rough, and this is validated by using two additional independent methods to measure surface temperature. These discrepancies from Fourier's law for translucent materials suggest that internal radiation whose mean-free-path is millimeters interacts with defects to produce small heat sources that by secondary emission afford an additional, non-local mode of heat transport. For these polymer and inorganic glass materials, this suggests unique strategies of heat management design.

Abstract:The effect of lattice fluctuations and electronic excitations on the radiative rate is demonstrated in CdSe/CdS core/shell spherical quantum dots (QDs). Using a combination of time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy and atomistic simulations, we show that lattice fluctuations can change the radiative rate over the temperature range from 78 to 300 K. We posit that the presence of the core/shell interface plays a significant role in dictating this behavior. We show that the other major factor that underpins the change in radiative rate with temperature is the presence of higher energy states corresponding to electron excitation into the shell. These effects should be present in other core/shell samples and should also affect other excited state rates, such as the rate of Auger recombination or the rate of charge transfer.

Abstract:Spectra of thermal fluctuations of a wide range of interfaces, from liquid/air, viscoelastic material/air, liquid/liquid, to liquid/viscoelastic material interfaces, were measured over 100 Hz to 10 MHz frequency range. The obtained spectra were compared with the fluctuation theory of interfaces, and found to be mostly in quite good agreement, when the theory was generalized to apply to thermal fluctuations of liquid/viscoelastic material interfaces. The spectra were measured using a system that combines light reflection, statistical noise reduction through averaged correlations, and confocal microscopy. It requires only a small area of the interface ($\sim1\,\mu$m$^2$) , relatively short times for measurements ($\lesssim$few min), and can also be applied to highly viscous materials.

Abstract:In this lecture we review several aspects of the thermal noise properties in two aging materials: a polymer and a colloidal glass. The measurements have been performed after a quench for the polymer and during the transition from a fluid-like to a solid-like state for the gel. Two kind of noise has been measured: the electrical noise and the mechanical noise. For both materials we have observed that the electric noise is characterized by a strong intermittency, which induces a large violation of the Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem (FDT) during the aging time, and may persist for several hours at low frequency. The statistics of these intermittent signals and their dependance on the quench speed for the polymer or on sample concentration for the gel are studied. The results are in a qualitative agreement with recent models of aging, that predict an intermittent dynamics. For the mechanical noise the results are unclear. In the polymer the mechanical thermal noise is still intermittent whereas for the gel the violation of FDT, if it exists, is extremely small.

Abstract:Fluctuations are significant in mesoscopic systems and of particular importance in understanding quantum transport. Here, we show that fluctuations can be considered as a resource for the operations of open quantum systems as functional devices. We derive the statistics of the thermal transistor amplification factor and the cooling-by-heating refrigerator efficiency under the Gaussian fluctuation framework. Statistical properties of the stochastic thermal transistor and the cooling-by-heating efficiency are revealed in the linear-response regime. We clarify the unique role of inelastic processes on thermal transport in mesoscopic systems. We further show that elastic and inelastic processes lead to different bounds based on the linear transport coefficients by using a generic theoretical framework for mesoscopic heat transport, which treats electron and bosonic collective excitations in an equal-footing manner. The underlying physics are illustrated concretely using a double-quantum-dot three-terminal system, though the theory applies to more general systems.

Abstract:In this work, the thermal bistability of magnons in yttrium iron garnet microspheres was experimentally characterized. Using high quality factor optical whispering gallery modes in the microsphere, the temperature change caused by the microwave pump is precisely measured by probing the optical resonance wavelength shift. It is found that temperature change also induces the magnonic frequency shift and the frequency shift depends on the crystal axis direction of the material. With some appropriate alignment of the magnetic field and the microsphere, the magnonic frequency shift induced by the thermal bistability from the microwave can be suppressed. Our results show its potential use in future experiments on magnon-based transducers.

Abstract:We analyze the quantum and thermal fluctuations in a magnetic nanoparticle that can be used as a component in magnetoelectronic devices and compare their influences on the basic modes of device operation at the nanoscale level. Within the framework of the effective Landau free energy constructed using a spin density functional approximation, we study the interplay between quantum and thermal fluctuations in different quantum numbers as the temperature and dimension of the particle are varied. Both theoretical and simulation results are presented for quantifying the quantum and thermal fluctuations. While quantum fluctuations hamper further miniaturization of today's electronic devices, our results suggest that the dominant factors affecting magnetoelectronic nanoscale devices are thermal fluctuations.
Measurement Errors in the Mean and Fluctuation Velocities of Spherical Grains from a Computer Analysis of Digital Images

Abstract:We outline an algorithm to extract the mean and fluctuation velocities of identical spheres colliding in microgravity from a sequence of digital images. We analyze four kinds of intrinsic errors. The first two artificially reduce the apparent fluctuation velocity. They derive from the inability of the algorithm to track indistinguishable spheres moving with excessive speed, and from invisible collisions occurring between consecutive frames. The third is due to the finite pixel size. The resulting uncertainty in the position of the spheres increases the measured fluctuation velocity. The last arises from the partitioning of the flow domain in strips to calculate velocity profiles. While this last kind of error can always be reduced by increasing the number of images acquired, the first three cannot be made arbitrarily small without improving pixel resolution. Using microgravity experiments and numerical simulations of a shear flow, we illustrate insidious distortions of the mean and fluctuation velocity profiles that originate with the unavoidable errors that we have discussed.

Abstract:We present a joint theoretical and experimental characterization of thermo-refractive noise in high quality factor ($Q$), small mode volume ($V$) optical microcavities. Analogous to well-studied stability limits imposed by Brownian motion in macroscopic Fabry-Perot resonators, microcavity thermo-refractive noise gives rise to a mode volume-dependent maximum effective quality factor. State-of-the-art fabricated microcavities are found to be within one order of magnitude of this bound. We confirm the assumptions of our theory by measuring the noise spectrum of high-$Q/V$ silicon photonic crystal cavities and apply our results to estimate the optimal performance of proposed room temperature, all-optical qubits using cavity-enhanced bulk material nonlinearities.

Towards a lattice-Fokker-Planck-Boltzmann model of thermal fluctuations in non-ideal fluids

Abstract:Microscopic thermal fluctuations are known to affect the macroscopic and spatio-temporal evolution of a host of physical phenomena central to the study of biological systems, turbulence, and reactive mixtures, among others. In phase-changing fluids metastability and nucleation rates of embryos are known to be non-trivially affected by thermal noise stemming from molecules random velocity fluctuations, which ultimately determine the long-term growth, morphology, and decay of macroscopic bubbles in cavitation and boiling. We herein present the mathematical groundwork for a lattice-based solution of the combined Fokker-Planck and Boltzmann equations that by proxy solve the stochastic Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations and a non-ideal, cubic van der Waals equation of state. We present the derivation of the kinetic lattice-Fokker-Planck-Boltzmann equations facilitated by Gauss-Hermite quadrature, and show by multi-scale asymptotic analysis that the non-equilibrium dynamics in velocity space inherent to the Fokker-Planck equation manifest as stresses. The resulting coarse-grained lattice-Fokker-Planck-Boltzmann method (LFPBM) is attractive as its dynamics are hypothesized to continually evolve thermal fluctuations introduced into the thermo-hydrodynamic variables by initial conditions in a manner that obeys the fundamental fluctuation-dissipation balances. Simulations will be showcased in future publications.

Abstract:Per the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, the information obtained from spin fluctuation studies in thermal equilibrium is necessarily constrained by the system's linear response functions. However, by including weak radio frequency magnetic fields, we demonstrate that intrinsic and random spin fluctuations even in strictly unpolarized ensembles can reveal underlying patterns of correlation and coupling beyond linear response, and can be used to study nonequilibrium and even multiphoton coherent spin phenomena. We demonstrate this capability in a classical vapor of (41)K alkali atoms, where spin fluctuations alone directly reveal Rabi splittings, the formation of Mollow triplets and Autler-Townes doublets, ac Zeeman shifts, and even nonlinear multiphoton coherences.
Spinodal Surface Fluctuations on Polymer Films

Abstract:We study the temporal growth pattern of surface fluctuations on a series of spinodally unstable polymer films where the degree of instability is controlled by the film thickness. For films in the deep spinodal region, the growth rate function of the surface modes as a function of the wavevector,, fits well to the mean-field theory. As the film thickness is increased and the film instability decreases, the mean-field theory demonstrates marked disagreement with experiment, notwithstanding provision of the known corrections for random thermal noise. We show that the deviations arise from large-amplitude fluctuations induced by homogeneous nucleation, which has not been considered in conventional treatment of thermal noise.

Abstract:Thermal fluctuations in the coatings used to make high reflectors are becoming significant noise sources in precision optical measurements and are particularly relevant to advanced gravitational-wave detectors. There are two recognized sources of coating thermal noise; mechanical loss and thermal dissipation. Thermal dissipation causes thermal fluctuations in the coating which produce noise via the thermoelastic and thermorefractive mechanisms. We treat these mechanisms coherently, give a correction for finite coating thickness, and evaluate the implications for Advanced LIGO.

Effects of Temperature Fluctuations on Charge Noise in Quantum Dot Qubits

Abstract:Silicon quantum dot qubits show great promise but suffer from charge noise with a 1/f^\alpha spectrum, where f is frequency and \alpha \lesssim 1. It has recently been proposed that 1/f^\alpha noise spectra can emerge from a few thermally activated two-level fluctuators in the presence of sub-bath temperature fluctuations associated with a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG)~\cite{Ahn2021}. We investigate this proposal by doing Monte Carlo simulations of a single Ising spin in a bath with a fluctuating temperature. We find that to obtain noise with a $1/f^\alpha$ spectrum with $alpha \lesssim 1 down to low frequencies, the duration of temperature fluctuations must be comparable to the inverse of the lowest frequency at which the noise is measured. This result is consistent with an analytic calculation in which the fluctuator is a two-state system with dynamics governed by time-dependent switching rates. In this case we find that the noise spectrum follows a Lorentzian at frequencies lower than the inverse of the average duration of the lowest switching rate. We then estimate relaxation times of thermal fluctuations by considering thermal diffusion in an electron gas in a confined geometry. We conclude that temperature fluctuations in a 2DEG sub-bath would require an unphysically long duration to be consistent with experimental measurements of 1/f-like charge noise in quantum dots at frequencies extending well below 1 Hz.

Abstract:Critical single-particle fluctuations associated with particle displacements are inherent to simple glass-forming liquids in the limit of large dimensions and leave a pseudo-critical trace across all finite dimensions. This characteristic could serve as a crucial test for distinguishing between theories of glass formation. We here examine these critical fluctuations, as captured by the well-established non-Gaussian parameter, within both mode-coupling theory (MCT) and dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) across dimensions for hard sphere liquids and for the minimally structured Mari--Kurchan model. We establish general scaling laws relevant to any liquid dynamics theory in large dimensions and show that the dimensional scalings predicted by MCT are inconsistent with those from DMFT. Simulation results for hard spheres in moderately high dimensions align with the DMFT scenario, reinforcing the relevance of mean-field theory for capturing glass physics in finite dimensions. We identify potential adjustments to MCT to account for certain mean-field physics. Our findings also highlight that local structure and spatial dimensionality can affect single-particle critical fluctuations in non-trivial ways.

Abstract:By direct application of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we numerically calculate the fundamental dimensional fluctuations of crystalline CaF2 whispering gallery resonators in the case of structural damping, and the limit that this noise imposes on the frequency stability of such resonators at both room and cryogenic temperatures. We analyze elasto-optic noise - the effect of Brownian dimensional fluctuation on frequency via the strain-dependence of the refractive index - a noise term that has so far not been considered for whispering-gallery resonators. We find that dimensional fluctuation sets a lower limit of 1E-16 to the Allan deviation for a 10-millimeter-radius sphere at 5 K, predominantly via induced fluctuation of the refractive index.

Abstract:A general scheme is developed to analyze the effect of non-uniform thermal magnetization fluctuations in a thin film. The normal mode formalism is utilized to calculate random magnetization fluctuations. The magnetization noise is proportional to the temperature and inversely proportional to the film volume. The total noise power is the sum of normal mode spectral noises and mainly determined by spin-wave standing modes with an odd number of oscillations. The effect rapidly decreases with increasing mode number. An exact analytical calcutaion is presented for a two-cell model.

Abstract:We propose to study the Brownian motion of a classical microsphere submergedin superfluid ^4He using the recent laser technology as a directinvestigation of the thermal fluctuations of quasiparticles in the quantumfluid. By calculating the temperature dependence of both the frictioncoefficient and the strength of the random force, we show that the resonantmode of the fluctuational motion can be fully resolved by the presenttechnology. Contrary to the previous work, it is found that the rotoncontribution is not negligible, and it even becomes dominant when thetemperature is above 0.76 K.
