Abstract:The non-equilibrium dynamics of trapped ultracold atomic gases, or mixtures thereof, is an extremely rich subject. Despite 20 years of studies, and remarkable progress mainly on the experimental front, numerous open question remain, related to the growth, relaxation and thermalisation of such systems, and there is still no universally-accepted theory for their theoretical description. In this paper we discuss one of the state-of-the-art kinetic approaches, which gives an intuitive picture of the physical processes happening at the microscopic scale, being broadly applicable both below and above the critical region (but not within the critical region itself). Specifically, the Zaremba-Nikuni-Griffin (ZNG) scheme provides a self-consistent description of the coupling between the condensate and the thermal atoms, including the collisions between these two subsystems. It has been successfully tested against experiments in various settings, including collective modes (e.g. monopole, dipole and quadrupole modes), topological excitations (solitons and vortices) and surface evaporative cooling. Here, we show that it can capture two important aspects of non- equilibrium dynamics for both single-component and two-component BECs: the Kohn mode (the undamped dipole oscillation independent of interactions and temperature) and (re)thermalization leading to condensate growth following sudden evaporation. Our simulations, performed in a spherically-symmetric trap reveal (i) an interesting two-stage dynamics and the emergence of a prominent monopole mode in the evaporative cooling of a single component Bose gas, and (ii) the long thermalization time associated with the sympathetic cooling of a realistic two-component mixture. Related open questions arise about the mechanisms and the nature of thermalization in such systems, where further controlled experiments are needed for benchmarking.

Stochastic Heating of a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Abstract:Understanding and controlling non-equilibrium processes at ultralow temperatures are central to quantum physics and technology. In such extreme environments, quantum coherence and dissipation can interact intimately to give rise to intriguing thermalization phenomena. Here, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate a novel scenario of thermalization in an ultracold atomic system, distinct from various quantum thermalization scenarios currently under intense investigations. We observe that after a sudden quench, an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) behaves as a rigid body and undergoes a random walk in momentum space due to atom loss and interactions with the surrounding thermal component. Consequently its center of mass degree of freedom gets heated up at a constant rate. This heating mechanism, rooted in random momentum scattering, falls into the paradigm of stochastic heating initiated by Fermi and thoroughly explored in plasma physics, which differs conceptually from the traditional thermal conduction. At longer times, the stochastic heating of the BEC is balanced by forced evaporative cooling, and a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution is achieved. Our findings offer new perspectives on the non-equilibrium dynamics of open Bose systems at ultralow temperature and quantum thermalization.

Experimental Observation Of Some Phenomena In Bose-Einstein Condensates

Abstract:In this chapter we review our experimental research on cold atoms and Bose-Einstein condensates, including the properties of the condensate in a tight confinement and across an optical dipole potential, the parametric excitation of cold atoms in a quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration trap, and the precise manipulation of atoms on a microchip. The behavior of BEC in a trap without free-falling is described in detail, and the sudden shrink of the long axis of the atomic cloud in a cigar-shape trap was observed directly when the condensation occurs. The experimental exploration supports the use of the reduction in the effective sample size as evidence for the onset of the condensate in the case that the trap cannot be switched off completely, just like permanent-magnet traps, or if the time-of-flight method is not convenient in a restricted geometry of the traps. The dynamical evolution of a cold atomic cloud and a condensate passing through a far red-detuned Gaussian beam is studied both numerically and experimentally. Several exotic phenomena, such as the focusing and advancement of atomic clouds, were exhibited. It shows that the BEC can be operated in a controllable manner, and it can be used to simulate a wide variety of quantum phenomena which benefit from the wave-like characteristic of the condensate and flexible manipulation of optical potentials. Furthermore, we discuss the parametric excitation of Rb-87 atoms in a quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration trap, and measure the dependence of the temperature and the number of the atomic cloud on modulation frequency of the parametric excitation field. It is found that the contribution of atomic collisions to the energy distributions results in a lower temperature of the atomic cloud than the theoretical prediction. Finally, we review our efforts in realizing the first BEC on an atom chip in China and report a systematic study on precisely controlling the behavior of cold atoms on chips, including magnetic trapping, adiabatically compressing, guiding, dynamically splitting and merging. Surface-induced evaporative cooling and parametric resonance induced by the modulation of the current in chip wires are also described.

Abstract:Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold atoms serve as low-entropy sources for a multitude of quantum-science applications, ranging from quantum simulation and quantum many-body physics to proof-of-principle experiments in quantum metrology and quantum computing. For stability reasons, in the majority of cases the energetically lowest-lying atomic spin state is used. Here we report the Bose-Einstein condensation of caesium atoms in the Zeeman-excited mf = 2 state, realizing a non-ground-state Bose-Einstein condensate with tunable interactions and tunable loss. We identify two regions of magnetic field in which the two-body relaxation rate is low enough that condensation is possible. We characterize the phase transition and quantify the loss processes, finding unusually high three-body losses in one of the two regions. Our results open up new possibilities for the mixing of quantum-degenerate gases, for polaron and impurity physics, and in particular for the study of impurity transport in strongly correlated one-dimensional quantum wires.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate a weakly-interacting degenerate Bose gas coupled to an empty Markovian bath. We show that in the universal phononic limit the system evolves towards an asymptotic state where an emergent temperature is set by the quantum noise of the outcoupling process. For situations typically encountered in experiments, this mechanism leads to significant cooling. Such dissipative cooling supplements conventional evaporative cooling and dominates in settings where thermalization is highly suppressed, such as in a one-dimensional quasicondensate.

Abstract:Ultracold atoms are an ideal platform for understanding system-reservoir dynamics of many-body systems. Here, we study quantum back-action in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, weakly interacting with a far-from resonant, i.e., dispersively interacting, probe laser beam. The light scattered by the atoms can be considered as a part of quantum measurement process whereby the change in the system state derives from measurement back-action. We experimentally quantify the resulting back-action in terms of the deposited energy. We model the interaction of the system and environment with a generalized measurement process, leading to a Markovian reservoir. Further, we identify two systematic sources of heating and loss: a stray optical lattice and probe-induced light assisted collisions (an intrinsic atomic process). The observed heating and loss rates are larger for blue detuning than for red detuning, where they are oscillatory functions of detuning with increased loss at molecular resonances and reduced loss between molecular resonances.

Abstract:We study the stability of Bose condensates with Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in three dimensions against quantum and thermal fluctuations. The ground state depletion of the plane-wave condensate due to quantum fluctuations is, as we show, finite, and therefore the condensate is stable. We also calculate the corresponding shift of the ground state energy. Although the system cannot condense in the absence of interparticle interactions, we show by estimating the number of excited particles that interactions stabilize the condensate even at non-zero temperature. Unlike in the usual Bose gas, the normal phase is not kinematically forbidden at any temperature; calculating the free energy of the normal phase at finite temperature, and comparing with the free energy of the condensed state, we infer that generally the system is condensed at zero temperature, and undergoes a transition to normal at non-zero temperature.

Abstract:This thesis describes the observation and study of Bose-Einstein condensation of a trapped, dilute gas of atomic hydrogen. The condensate and normal gas are studied by two-photon spectroscopy of the 1S-2S transition. We condense over 10^9 atoms per second for several seconds, and the peak condensate density is around 5x10^15 cm^-3. Topics covered in the thesis include a theoretical analysis of Bose-condensed hydrogen, a description of the cryogenic trapping cell and the evaporative cooling techniques used to bring the gas to the condensation point, and an analysis of the condensate.

Abstract:The recent realization of Bose–Einstein condensation in atomic gases opens new possibilities for the observation of macroscopic quantum phenomena. There are two important features of these systems — weak interaction and significant spatial inhomogeneity. Because of this a non-trivial 'zeroth-order' theory exists, compared to the 'first-order' Bogolubov theory. The zeroth-order theory is based on the mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equation for the condensate ψ-function. The equation is classical in its essence but contains the constant explicitly. Phenomena such as collective modes, interference, tunneling, Josephson-like current and quantized vortex lines can be described using this equation. Elementary excitations define the thermodynamic behavior of the system and result in a Landau-type damping of collective modes. Fluctuations of the phase of the condensate wave function restrict the monochromaticity of the Josephson current. Fluctuations of the numbers of quanta result in quantum collapse-revival of the collective oscillations.

Abstract:We consider a Bose gas on the unit torus at zero temperature in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime, known to perform Bose-Einstein condensation: a macroscopic fraction of the bosons occupy the same quantum state, called condensate. We study the Bose gas' quantum depletion, that is the number of bosons outside the condensate, and derive an explicit asymptotic formula of its generating function. Moreover, we prove an upper bound for large deviations of the quantum depletion.

Abstract:Molecular quantum gases (that is, ultracold and dense molecular gases) have many potential applications, including quantum control of chemical reactions, precision measurements, quantum simulation and quantum information processing1-3. For molecules, to reach the quantum regime usually requires efficient cooling at high densities, which is frequently hindered by fast inelastic collisions that heat and deplete the population of molecules4,5. Here we report the preparation of two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of spinning molecules by inducing pairing interactions in an atomic condensate near a g-wave Feshbach resonance6. The trap geometry and the low temperature of the molecules help to reduce inelastic loss, ensuring thermal equilibrium. From the equation-of-state measurement, we determine the molecular scattering length to be + 220(±30) Bohr radii (95% confidence interval). We also investigate the unpairing dynamics in the strong coupling regime and find that near the Feshbach resonance the dynamical timescale is consistent with the unitarity limit. Our work demonstrates the long-sought transition between atomic and molecular condensates, the bosonic analogue of the crossover from a BEC to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid in a Fermi gas7-9. In addition, our experiment may shed light on condensed pairs with orbital angular momentum, where a novel anisotropic superfluid with non-zero surface current is predicted10,11, such as the A phase of 3He.

Abstract:Continuously measured interacting quantum systems almost invariably heat, causing loss of quantum coherence. Here, we study Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) subject to repeated weak measurement of the atomic density and describe several protocols for generating a feedback signal designed to remove excitations created by measurement backaction. We use a stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation to model the system dynamics and find that a feedback protocol utilizing momentum dependant gain and filtering can effectively cool both 1D and 2D systems. The performance of these protocols is quantified in terms of the steady state energy, entropy, and condensed fraction. These are the first feedback cooling protocols demonstrated in 2D, and in 1D our optimal protocol reduces the equilibrium energy by more than a factor of 100 as compared with a previous cooling protocol developed using the same methodology. We also use this protocol to quench-cool 1D BECs from non-condensed highly excited states and find that they rapidly condense into a far from equilibrium state with energy orders of magnitude higher than the equilibrium ground state energy for that condensate fraction. We explain this in terms of the near-integrability of our 1D system, whereby efficiently cooled low momentum modes are effectively decoupled from the energetic `reservoir' of the higher momentum modes. We observe that the quench-cooled condensed states can have non-zero integer winding numbers described by quantized supercurrents.

Abstract:After a brief historical introduction to Bose-Einstein condensation and Fermi degeneracy, we discuss theoretical results we have recentely obtained for trapped degenerate quantum gases by means of a thermal field theory approach. In particular, by using Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov-Popov equations, we consider thermodynamical properties of two Bosonic systems: a gas of Lithium atoms and a gas of Hydrogen atoms. Finally, we investigate finite-temperature density profiles of a dilute Fermi gas of Potassium atoms confined in a harmonic potential.

Abstract:The path integral Monte Carlo method is used to simulate dilute trapped Bose gases and to investigate the equilibrium properties at finite temperatures. The quantum particles have a long-range dipole-dipole interaction and a short-range s-wave interaction. Using an anisotropic pseudopotential for the long-range dipolar interaction and a hard-sphere potential for the short-range s-wave interaction, we calculate the energetics and structural properties as a function of temperature and the number of particles. Also, in order to determine the effects of dipole-dipole forces and the influence of the trapping field on the dipolar condensate, we use two cylindrically symmetric harmonic confinements (a cigar-shaped trap and a disk-shaped trap). We find that the net effect of dipole-dipole interactions is governed by the trapping geometry. For a cigar-shaped trap, the net contribution of dipolar interactions is attractive and the shrinking of the density profiles is observed. For a disk-shaped trap, the net effect of long-range dipolar forces is repulsive and the density profiles expand.
Dissipation Driven Coherent Dynamics Observed in Bose-Einstein Condensates

Abstract:We report the first experimental observation of dissipation-driven coherent quantum many-body oscillation, and this oscillation is manifested as the coherent exchange of atoms between the thermal and the condensate components in a three-dimensional partially condensed Bose gas. Firstly, we observe that the dissipation leads to two different atom loss rates between the thermal and the condensate components, such that the thermal fraction increases as dissipation time increases. Therefore, this dissipation process serves as a tool to uniformly ramp up the system's temperature without introducing extra density excitation. Subsequently, a coherent pair exchange of atoms between the thermal and the condensate components occurs, resulting in coherent oscillation of atom numbers in both components. This oscillation, permanently embedded in the atom loss process, is revealed clearly when we inset a duration of dissipation-free evolution into the entire dynamics, manifested as an oscillation of total atom number at the end. Finally, we also present a theoretical calculation to support this physical mechanism, which simultaneously includes dissipation, interaction, finite temperature, and harmonic trap effects. Our work introduces a highly controllable dissipation as a new tool to control quantum many-body dynamics.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of an ion moving through a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) after an initial momentum is imparted. For this, we derive a master equation in the weak-coupling limit and Lamb-Dicke approximation for the reduced density matrix of the ion. We study the time evolution of the ion's kinetic energy and observe that its expectation value, identified as the ion temperature $T_\mathrm{ion}$, is reduced by several orders of magnitude in a time on the order of microseconds for a condensate density in the experimentally relevant range between $10^{13}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ and $10^{14}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$. We characterize this behavior by defining the duration at half maximum as the time required by $T_\mathrm{ion}$ to reach half of its initial value, and study its dependence on the system parameters. Similarly, we find that the expectation value of the ion's momentum operator is reduced by nine orders of magnitude on the same timescale, making the ion's position converge to a final value. Based on these results, we conclude that the interaction with the bosonic bath allows for cooling and pinning of the ion by decreasing the expectation value of its kinetic energy and velocity, which constitutes a result of direct relevance for current atom-ion experiments.

Abstract:Exact calculation of the condensate fraction in multi-dimensional inhomogeneous interacting Bose systems which do not possess continuous symmetries is a difficult computational problem. We have developed an iterative procedure which allows to calculate the condensate fraction as well as the corresponding eigenfunction of the one-body density matrix. We successfully validate this procedure in diffusion Monte Carlo simulations of a Bose gas in an optical lattice at zero temperature. We also discuss relation between different criteria used for testing coherence in cold Bose systems, such as fraction of particles that are superfluid, condensed or are in the zero-momentum state.

Controlling Nonequilibrium Bose-Einstein Condensation with Engineered Environments

Abstract:Out of thermal equilibrium, bosonic quantum systems can Bose-condense away from the ground state, featuring a macroscopic occupation of an excited state or even of multiple states in the so-called Bose-selection scenario. In previous work, a theory was developed that predicts, in which states a driven-dissipative ideal Bose gas condenses. Here, we address the inverse problem: Given a target state with desired condensate fractions in certain single-particle states, how can this configuration be achieved by tuning available control parameters? Which type of experimental setup allows for flexible condensation control? We solve these problems, on the one hand, by proposing a Bose `condenser', experimentally implementable in a superconducting circuit, where targeted Bose condensation into eigenstates of a chain of resonators is driven through the coupling to artificial quantum baths, realized via auxiliary two-level systems. On the other, we develop a theory to solve the inverse problem based on linear programming methods. We further discuss the engineering of transition points between different Bose condensation configurations, which may find application for amplification, heat-flow control, and the design of highly-structured quantum baths.

Abstract:A nonequilibrium approach to the dynamics and statistics of the condensate of an ideal N-atom Bose gas cooling via interaction with a thermal reservoir using the canonical ensemble is developed. We derive simple analytical expressions for the canonical partition function and equilibrium distribution of the number of atoms in the ground state of a trap under different approximations, and compare them with exact numerical results. The N-particle constraint associated with the canonical ensemble is usually a burden. In the words of Kittel, "in the investigation of the Bose-Einstein... laws it is very inconvenient to impose the restriction that the number of particles in the subsystem shall be held constant." But in the present approach, based on the analogy between a second-order phase transition and laser threshold behavior, the N-particle constraint makes the problem easier. We emphasize that the present work provides another example of a case in which equilibrium (detailed balance) solutions to nonequilibrium equations of motion provide a useful supplementary approach to conventional statistical mechanics. We also discuss some dynamical and mesoscopic aspects of Bose-Einstein condensation. The conclusion is that the present analytical (but approximate) results, based on a nonequilibrium approach, are in excellent agreement with exact (but numerical) results. The present analysis has much in common with the quantum theory of the laser.
Solitons as the early stage of quasicondensate formation during evaporative cooling

Abstract:We calculate the evaporative cooling dynamics of trapped one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates for parameters leading to a range of condensates and quasicondensates in the final equilibrium state. We confirm that solitons are created during the evaporation process, but always eventually dissipate during thermalisation. The distance between solitons at the end of the evaporation ramp matches the coherence length in the final thermal state. Calculations were made using the classical fields method. They bridge the gap between the phase defect picture of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism and the long-wavelength phase fluctuations in the thermal state.
