Abstract:Environmental interactions are ubiquitous in any real-world application of a quantum information processing protocol. Such interactions result in depletion of quantum resources. Two important figure of merits in the context of quantum information are the fully entangled fraction (FEF) and conditional entropy of a composite quantum system. FEF has a key role to play in tasks like teleportation. Conditional entropy on the other hand can be negative for certain quantum states and thus the negativity remains a resource for tasks like dense coding and state merging. FEF $ > 1/d $ for a $ d \otimes d $ quantum system is a significant threshold, however for some quantum states it remains less than the threshold even with global unitary operations, consequently being known as states having absolute fully entangled fraction (AFEF). Pertaining to conditional von Neumann entropy, there are some states which retains the nonnegativity of the conditional entropy under global unitary action, to be called as states with absolute conditional von Neumann entropy nonnegative (ACVENN) property. In the present submission, we probe the action of some quantum channels in two qubits and two qudits and find that some quantum states move from the non-absolute regime to the absolute regime under the action. Since, global unitary operations are unable to retrieve them back to the non-absolute regime, we provide a prescription for the retrieval using an entanglement swapping network. Furthermore, we extend the notion of absoluteness to conditional Rényi entropies and find the required condition for a state to have absolute conditional Rényi entropy non-negative (ACRENN) property. We then extend the work to include the marginals of a tripartite system and provide for their characterization with respect to the aforementioned absolute properties.

Abstract:The observation that concepts from quantum information has generated many alternative indicators of quantum phase transitions hints that quantum phase transitions possess operational significance with respect to the processing of quantum information. Yet, studies on whether such transitions lead to quantum phases that differ in their capacity to process information remain limited. Here we show that there exist quantum phase transitions that cause a distinct qualitative change in our ability to simulate certain quantum systems under perturbation of an external field by local operations and classical communication. In particular, we show that in certain quantum phases of the XY model, adiabatic perturbations of the external magnetic field can be simulated by local spin operations, whereas the resulting effect within other phases results in coherent non-local interactions. We discuss the potential implications to adiabatic quantum computation, where a computational advantage exists only when adiabatic perturbation results in coherent multi-body interactions.

Abstract:Any evolution described by a completely positive trace-preserving linear map can be imagined as arising from the interaction of the evolving system with an initially uncorrelated ancilla. The interaction is given by a joint unitary operator, acting on the system and the ancilla. Here we study the properties such a unitary operator must have in order to force the choice of a physical- that is, positive-state for the ancilla if the end result is to be a physical-that is, completely positive-evolution of the system.

Quantum Phase Processing and its Applications in Estimating Phase and Entropies

Abstract:Quantum computing can provide speedups in solving many problems as the evolution of a quantum system is described by a unitary operator in an exponentially large Hilbert space. Such unitary operators change the phase of their eigenstates and make quantum algorithms fundamentally different from their classical counterparts. Based on this unique principle of quantum computing, we develop a new algorithmic toolbox "quantum phase processing" that can directly apply arbitrary trigonometric transformations to eigenphases of a unitary operator. The quantum phase processing circuit is constructed simply, consisting of single-qubit rotations and controlled-unitaries, typically using only one ancilla qubit. Besides the capability of phase transformation, quantum phase processing in particular can extract the eigen-information of quantum systems by simply measuring the ancilla qubit, making it naturally compatible with indirect measurement. Quantum phase processing complements another powerful framework known as quantum singular value transformation and leads to more intuitive and efficient quantum algorithms for solving problems that are particularly phase-related. As a notable application, we propose a new quantum phase estimation algorithm without quantum Fourier transform, which requires the fewest ancilla qubits and matches the best performance so far. We further exploit the power of our method by investigating a plethora of applications in Hamiltonian simulation, entanglement spectroscopy and quantum entropies estimation, demonstrating improvements or optimality for almost all cases.

Abstract:We describe in detail a general strategy for implementing a conditional geometric phase between two spins. Combined with single-spin operations, this simple operation is a universal gate for quantum computation, in that any unitary transformation can be implemented with arbitrary precision using only single-spin operations and conditional phase shifts. Thus quantum geometrical phases can form the basis of any quantum computation. Moreover, as the induced conditional phase depends only on the geometry of the paths executed by the spins it is resilient to certain types of errors and offers the potential of a naturally fault-tolerant way of performing quantum computation.

Abstract:We define quantum phase in terms of inverses of annihilation and creation operators. We show that like Susskind - Glogower phase operators, the measured phase operators and the unitary phase operators can be defined in terms of the inverse operators. However, for the unitary phase operator the Hilbert space includes the negative energy states. The quantum phase in inverse operator representation may find the applications in the field of quantum optics particularly in the squeezed states.

This structure includes basic quantum elements such as states, measurements, channels, instruments, non-signalling channels and channels with memory, and also higher-order operations such as superchannels, quantum combs, n-time processes, testers, and process matrices which may not respect a definite causal order. Deducing and characterising their structural properties in terms of linear and semidefinite constraints is not only of foundational relevance, but plays an important role in enabling the numerical optimisation over sets of quantum objects and allowing simpler connections between different concepts and objects. Here, we provide a general framework to deduce these properties in a direct and easy to use way. While primarily guided by practical quantum mechanical considerations, we also extend our analysis to mappings between linear/affine spaces and derive their properties, opening the possibility for analysing sets which are not explicitly forbidden by quantum theory, but are still not much explored. Together, these results yield versatile and readily applicable tools for all tasks that require the characterisation of linear transformations, in quantum mechanics and beyond. As an application of our methods, we discuss how the existence of indefinite causality naturally emerges in higher-order quantum transformations and provide a simple strategy for the characterisation of mappings that have to preserve properties in a 'complete' sense, i.e., when acting non-trivially only on parts of an input space.

Abstract:Computational devices may be supplied with external sources of information (oracles). Quantum oracles may transmit phase information which is available to a quantum computer but not a classical computer. One consequence of this observation is that there is an oracle which is of no assistance to a classical computer but which allows a quantum computer to solve undecidable problems. Thus useful relativized separations between quantum and classical complexity classes must exclude the transmission of phase information from oracle to computer.

Abstract:Quantum information processing and computing tasks can be understood as quantum networks, comprising quantum states and channels and possible physical transformations on them. It is hence pertinent to estimate the change in informational content of quantum processes due to physical transformations they undergo. The physical transformations of quantum states are described by quantum channels, while the transformations of quantum channels are described by quantum superchannels. In this work, we determine fundamental limitations on how well the physical transformation on quantum channels can be undone or reversed, which are of crucial interest to design and benchmark quantum information and computation devices. In particular, we refine (strengthen) the quantum data processing inequality for quantum channels under the action of quantum superchannels. We identify a class of quantum superchannels, which appears to be the superchannel analogue of subunital quantum channels, under the action of which the entropy of an arbitrary quantum channel is nondecreasing. We also provide a refined inequality for the entropy change of quantum channels under the action of an arbitrary quantum superchannel.

Memory in quantum processes with indefinite time direction and causal order

Abstract:We examine the emergence of dynamical memory effects in quantum processes having indefinite time direction and causal order. In particular, we focus on the class of phase-covariant qubit channels, which encompasses some of the most significant paradigmatic open quantum system models. In order to assess the memory in the time evolution of the system, we utilize the trace distance and the entanglement based measures of non-Markovianity. While the indefinite time direction is obtained through the quantum time flip operation that realizes a coherent superposition of forward and backward processes, the indefinite causal order is achieved via the quantum switch map, which implements two quantum processes in a coherent superposition of their two possible orders. Considering various different families of phase-covariant qubit channels, we demonstrate that, when implemented on memoryless quantum processes, both the quantum time flip and the quantum switch operations can generate memory effects in the dynamics according to the trace distance based measure under certain conditions. On the other hand, with respect to the entanglement based measure, we show that neither the quantum time flip nor the quantum switch could induce dynamical memory for any of the considered phase-covariant channels.

Cohering and decohering power of quantum channels

Abstract:We introduce the concepts of cohering and de-cohering power of quantum channels. Using the axiomatic definition of coherence measure, we show that the optimizations required for calculations of these measures can be restricted to pure input states and hence greatly simplified. We then use two examples of this measure, one based on the skew information and the other based on $l-1$ norm, we find the cohering and de-cohering measures of a number of one, two and n-qubit channels. Contrary to a view at first sight, it is seen that quantum channels can have cohering power. It is also shown that a specific property of a qubit unitary map, is that it has equal cohering and de-cohering power in any basis. Finally we derive simple relations between cohering and de-cohering powers of unitary qubit gates and their tensor products, results which have physically interesting implications.

Abstract:We demonstrate how insights gained from reformulating the problem of quantum teleportation into one of reversing quantum operations, and designing optimum completely positive maps for teleportation, can enable one to explore optimal approximate reversal of quantum operations on a single qubit. In particular, we show that the optimal approximate reversal of a generalized depolarizing channel can be achieved using only unitary transformations. We also show that for a quantum channel, which reveals some information about the input state, extremal completely positive maps and not unitary transformations yield optimal approximate reversal.

Abstract:Many quantum algorithms rely on the measurement of complex quantum amplitudes. Standard approaches to obtain the phase information, such as the Hadamard test, give rise to large overheads due to the need for global controlled-unitary operations. We introduce a quantum algorithm based on complex analysis that overcomes this problem for amplitudes that are a continuous function of time. Our method only requires the implementation of real-time evolution and a shallow circuit that approximates a short imaginary-time evolution. Abstract:Resource theory of imaginarity provides a useful framework to understand the role of complex numbers, which are essential in the formulation of quantum mechanics, in a mathematically rigorous way. In the first part of this article, we study the properties of ``real'' (quantum) operations both in single-party and bipartite settings. As a consequence, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for state transformations under real operations and show the existence of ``real entanglement'' monotones. In the second part of this article, we focus on the problem of single copy state transformation via real quantum operations. When starting from pure initial states, we completely solve this problem by finding an analytical expression for the optimal fidelity of transformation, for a given probability of transformation and vice versa. Moreover, for state transformations involving arbitrary initial states and pure final states, we provide a semidefinite program to compute the optimal achievable fidelity, for a given probability of transformation.

Coherent Information Phase Transition in a Noisy Quantum Circuit

Abstract:Coherent information quantifies the transmittable quantum information through a channel and is directly linked to the channel's quantum capacity. In the context of dynamical purification transitions, scrambling dynamics sustain extensive and positive coherent information at low measurement rates, but noises can suppress it to zero or negative values. Here we introduce quantum-enhanced operations into a noisy monitored quantum circuit. This circuit, viewed as a quantum channel, undergoes a phase transition in coherent information from a recoverable phase with positive values to an irrecoverable phase with negative values. This transition is modulated by the relative frequency of noise and quantum-enhanced operations. The existence of a recoverable phase implies that quantum-enhanced operations can facilitate reliable quantum information transmission in the presence of diverse noises. Remarkably, we propose a resource-efficient protocol to characterize this phase transition, effectively avoiding post-selection by utilizing every run of the quantum simulation. This approach bridges the gap between theoretical insights and practical implementation, making the phase transition feasible to demonstrate on realistic noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices.

Abstract:Behind the flourish of quantum technology is the mature quantum control technique, which allows one to manipulate the quantum states of a physical system with unprecedented precisions. The conquests in quantum domain proceed from arbitrary quantum state preparation but are mostly limited to closed quantum systems. The ultimate goal of quantum control is to realize arbitrary quantum operations (AQuOs), i.e. the completely-positive-trace-preserving maps, for all possible physical processes of an open quantum system. However, the demanding extra physical resources impose obstacles for experiments. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a universal approach of AQuO on a photonic qudit with minimum physical resource of a two-level ancilla and a $\log_{2}d$-scale circuit depth for a $d$-dimensional system. The AQuO is then applied in quantum trajectory simulation for quantum subspace stabilization and quantum Zeno dynamics, arbitrary quantum state preparation, as well as incoherent manipulation of the qudit. Furthermore, the AQuO allows rank-$d^{2}$ positive operator-valued measures, which outperform conventional tomography technique in practice. Therefore, the demonstrated AQuO for complete quantum control would play an indispensable role in quantum information science.
Phase transition in iterated quantum protocols for noisy inputs

Abstract:Quantum information processing exploits all the features quantum mechanics offers. Among them there is the possibility to induce nonlinear maps on a quantum system by involving two or more identical copies of the given system in the same state. Such maps play a central role in distillation protocols used for quantum key distribution. We determine that such protocols may exhibit sensitive, quasi-chaotic evolution not only for pure initial states but also for mixed states, i.e., the complex dynamical behavior is not destroyed by small initial uncertainty. We show that the appearance of sensitive, complex dynamics associated with a fractal structure in the parameter space of the system has the character of a phase transition. The purity of the initial state plays the role of the control parameter, and the dimension of the fractal structure is independent of the purity value after passing the phase transition point. The critical purity coincides with the purity of a repelling fixed point of the dynamics, and we show that all the pre-images of states from the close neighborhood of pure chaotic initial states have purity larger than this. Initial states from this set can be considered as quasi-chaotic.
