Abstract:Coherent information quantifies the transmittable quantum information through a channel and is directly linked to the channel's quantum capacity. In the context of dynamical purification transitions, scrambling dynamics sustain extensive and positive coherent information at low measurement rates, but noises can suppress it to zero or negative values. Here we introduce quantum-enhanced operations into a noisy monitored quantum circuit. This circuit, viewed as a quantum channel, undergoes a phase transition in coherent information from a recoverable phase with positive values to an irrecoverable phase with negative values. This transition is modulated by the relative frequency of noise and quantum-enhanced operations. The existence of a recoverable phase implies that quantum-enhanced operations can facilitate reliable quantum information transmission in the presence of diverse noises. Remarkably, we propose a resource-efficient protocol to characterize this phase transition, effectively avoiding post-selection by utilizing every run of the quantum simulation. This approach bridges the gap between theoretical insights and practical implementation, making the phase transition feasible to demonstrate on realistic noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The core problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to maintain or restore coherent information in a quantum circuit by introducing Quantum - Enhanced (QE) operations in the presence of noise. Specifically, the paper explores whether the coherent information will experience a phase transition from a recoverable phase to an unrecoverable phase in a quantum circuit that includes random unitary gates, measurements, noise, and quantum - enhanced operations, and studies how this phase transition is affected by the relative frequencies of noise and quantum - enhanced operations.
### Main problems and background
1. **Importance of coherent information**:
- Coherent information is a key indicator for measuring the transmission capacity of a quantum channel and is directly related to the capacity of the quantum channel.
- A positive value of coherent information indicates that quantum information can be successfully transmitted, while a zero or negative value indicates that no quantum information is transmitted.
2. **Effect of noise on quantum information transmission**:
- In actual quantum systems, noise can seriously affect the transmission of quantum information, causing the coherent information to decrease or even become negative.
- Traditional quantum error - correction methods can protect quantum information to a certain extent, but they require complex encoding and decoding processes.
3. **Role of quantum - enhanced operations**:
- Quantum - enhanced operations can improve the reliability of quantum information transmission in a noisy environment by introducing ancilla qubits and specific unitary - gate operations.
- The paper proposes a resource - efficient protocol for characterizing this phase transition, avoiding the problem of post - selection, so that the phase - transition phenomenon can be verified on actual noisy intermediate - scale quantum devices.
### Research methods and results
1. **Circuit model**:
- The paper constructs a quantum circuit model that includes four operations: random unitary gates, measurements, noise, and quantum - enhanced operations.
- By adjusting the relative frequencies of noise and quantum - enhanced operations, the change in coherent information is studied.
2. **Analysis and simulation**:
- Through theoretical analysis, the coherent information is mapped to the free - energy difference of a classical statistical mechanics model.
- Large - scale numerical simulations are carried out to verify the existence of the coherent - information phase transition and to determine the critical point and critical exponent.
3. **Efficient protocol**:
- A resource - efficient protocol is proposed that uses measurement results and the final state to estimate the coherent - information phase transition.
- This protocol can make full use of the results of each experiment and avoid the problems of noise - location control and post - selection of measurement results.
### Conclusion
By introducing quantum - enhanced operations, the paper shows the possibility of maintaining and restoring coherent information in a noisy environment and proposes a resource - efficient protocol to characterize this phase transition. These results are of great significance for achieving fault - tolerant quantum computing, especially for applications on actual noisy intermediate - scale quantum devices.
