Abstract:We study D3-branes in an NS5-branes background defined by an arbitrary 4d harmonic function. Using a gauge-invariant formulation of Born-Infeld dynamics as well as the supersymmetry condition, we find the general solution for the $\omega$-field. We propose an interpretation in terms of the Myers effect.

Abstract:We construct the type IIB supergravity solutions describing D3-branes ending on 5-branes, in the near-horizon limit of the D3-branes. Our solutions are holographically dual to the 4d N=4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on a half-line, at large N and large 't Hooft coupling, with various boundary conditions that preserve half of the supersymmetry. The solutions are limiting cases of the general solutions with the same symmetries constructed in 2007 by D'Hoker, Estes and Gutperle. The classification of our solutions matches exactly with the general classification of boundary conditions for D3-branes ending on 5-branes by Gaiotto and Witten. We use the gravity duals to compute the one-point functions of some chiral operators in the N=4 SYM theory on a half-line at strong coupling, and find that they do not match with the expectation values of the same operators with the same boundary conditions at small 't Hooft coupling. Our solutions may also be interpreted as the gravity duals of 4d N=4 SYM on AdS_4, with various boundary conditions.

Abstract:We study the dynamics governing space-time filling D-branes on Type II flux backgrounds preserving four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry. The four-dimensional superpotentials and D-terms are derived. The analysis is kept on completely general grounds thanks to the use of recently proposed generalized calibrations, which also allow one to show the direct link of the superpotentials and D-terms with BPS domain walls and cosmic strings respectively. In particular, our D-brane setting reproduces the tension of D-term strings found from purely four-dimensional analysis. The holomorphicity of the superpotentials is also studied and a moment map associated to the D-terms is proposed. Among different examples, we discuss an application to the study of D7-branes on SU(3)-structure backgrounds, which reproduces and generalizes some previous results.

Abstract:As the necessary background to construct from the aspect of Grothendiecku0027s Algebraic Geometry dynamical fermionic D3-branes along the line of Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz superstrings in string theory, three pieces of the building blocks are given in the current notes: (1) basic $C^infty$-algebrogeometric foundations of $d=4$, $N=1$ supersymmetry and $d=4$, $N=1$ superspace in physics, with emphasis on the partial $C^infty$-ring structure on the function ring of the superspace, (2) the notion of SUSY-rep compatible hybrid connections on bundles over the superspace to address connections on the Chan-Paton bundle on the world-volume of a fermionic D3-brane, (3) the notion of $widehat{D}$-chiral maps $widehat{varphi}$ from a $d=4$ $N=1$ Azumaya/matrix superspace with a fundamental module with a SUSY-rep compatible hybrid connection $widehat{nabla}$ to a complex manifold $Y$ as a model for a dynamical D3-branes moving in a target space(-time). Some test computations related to the construction of a supersymmetric action functional for SUSY-rep compatible $(widehat{nabla}, widehat{varphi})$ are given in the end, whose further study is the focus of a separate work. The current work is a sequel to D(11.4.1) (arXiv:1709.08927 [math.DG]) and D(11.2) (arXiv:1412.0771 [hep-th]) and is the first step in the supersymmetric generalization, in the case of D3-branes, of the standard action functional for D-branes constructed in D(13.3) (arXiv:1704.03237 [hep-th]).

Abstract:The scaling laws describing the roughness development of crack surfaces are incorporated into the Griffith criterion. We show that, in the case of a Family-Vicsek scaling, the energy balance leads to a purely elastic brittle behavior. On the contrary, it appears that an anomalous scaling reflects a R-curve behavior associated to a size effect of the critical resistance to crack growth in agreement with the fracture process of heterogeneous brittle materials exhibiting a microcracking damage.

Abstract:We study codimension-1 brane solutions of the 5d brane world models compactified on $S_1 / \mathbb{Z}_2$. In string theoretical setup they suggest that the background branes located at orbifold fixed points should be NS-branes (in the five dimensional sense), rather than D-branes. Indeed, the existence of the background NS-branes is indispensable to obtain flat geometry $M_4 \times S_1 / \mathbb{Z}_2$ where $M_4$ represents the 4d Minkowski spacetime, and without these branes the 5d metric becomes singular everywhere. This result is very reminiscent of the $(p+3)$d effective string theory \cite{1} where the NS-NS type $p$-brane is indispensable to obtain a flat geometry $R_2$ or $R_2 /\mathbb{Z}_n$ on the transverse dimensions. Without this NS-NS type $p$-brane the 2d transverse space becomes a pin-shaped singular space. The correspondence between these two theories leads us to a conjecture that the whole flat backgrounds of the string theory inherently invovle the NS-branes implicitly in their ansatz, and hence the true background $p$-branes immanent in our spacetime may be NS-branes, instead of D-branes. We argue that this result can have a significant consequence in the context of the cosmological constant problem.

D3-branes and M5-branes wrapped on a topological disc

Abstract:Employing the method applied to construct $AdS_5$ solutions from M5-branes recently by Bah, Bonetti, Minasian and Nardoni, we construct supersymmetric $AdS_3$ solutions from D3-branes and M5-branes wrapped on a disc with non-trivial holonomies at the boundary. In five-dimensional $U(1)^3$-gauged $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity, we find $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetric $AdS_3$ solutions. We uplift the solutions to type IIB supergravity and obtain D3-branes wrapped on a topological disc. We also uplift the solutions to eleven-dimensional supergravity and obtain M5-branes wrapped on a product of topological disc and Riemann surface. For the $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ solution, holographic central charges are finite and well-defined. On the other hand, we could not find $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ solution with finite holographic central charge. Finally, we show that the topological disc we obtain is, in fact, identical to a special case of the multi-charge spindle solution.

D3-brane Vacua in Stabilized Compactifications

Abstract:D3-branes feel no force in no-scale flux compactifications of type IIB string theory, but the nonperturbative effects required to stabilize the Kahler moduli break the no-scale structure and generate a potential for D3-brane motion, confining the branes to certain loci. D3-branes away from these loci break supersymmetry spontaneously, by an F-term. We present the general conditions for supersymmetric D3-brane vacua in models with a single Kahler modulus, then explicitly calculate these vacua for D3-branes moving on the tip of the warped deformed conifold. We find both continuous moduli spaces and isolated vacua. In addition, we show that anti-D3-branes and D3-branes are localized to the same regions by the nonperturbative potential, avoiding a potential obstacle to brane inflation. We apply these results to determine whether angular motion of a brane in a throat could play an important role in inflation, and find that any inflation along the angular directions is short-lived because the field space is very small.

One-loop quantization of Euclidean D3-branes in holographic backgrounds

Abstract:In this note we analyze the semi-classical quantization of D3 branes in three different holographic backgrounds in type IIB string theory. The first background is Euclidean AdS$_5$ with $S^1\times S^3$ boundary accompanied with a twist to preserve supersymmetry. We work out the spectrum of fluctuations around the classical D3-brane configuration, compute its one-loop partition function, and match to the non-perturbative correction to the superconformal index of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM. We then study Euclidean D3-branes in the Pilch-Warner geometry dual to the IR Leigh-Strassler fixed point of ${\cal N}=1^*$ with the aim to find non-perturbative corrections to its index. Finally we study Euclidean D3-branes in the non-geometric ${\cal N}=2$ J-fold background which is dual to the gauging of the 3D Gaiotto-Witten SCFT.

Abstract:A survey is given of the formulation of a $\sigma$-model describing an open string moving in general target space background fields and coupling to both a matrix-valued D-brane position and a matrix-valued gauge field on the D-brane. The equations of motion for the D-brane and the gauge field are derived from the conformal invariance condition on the string world sheet in lowest order of $\ap$. The ordering problem of the involved matrices is solved. In addition to our previous work we discuss a conflict between the classical T-duality rules and renormalization. The calculation of the RG $\beta$-functions does not yield the mass term obtained by formal application of these rules in the case of target space separated D-brane copies.

Abstract:Four-dimensional supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on a sphere has highly charged baryon-like states built from anti-symmetric combinations of the adjoint scalars. We show that these states, which are equivalently described as holes in a free fermi sea of a reduced matrix model, are D-branes. Their excitations are string like and effectively realize Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in various directions. The low energy brane dynamics should realize an emergent gauge theory that is local on a new space. We show that the Gauss' Law associated to this emergent gauge symmetry appears from combinatorial identities relating the stringy excitation. Although these excitations are not BPS, they can be near-BPS and we can hope to study them in perturbation theory. Accordingly, we show that the Chan-Paton factors expected for strings propagating on multiple branes arise dynamically, allowing the emergent gauge symmetry to be non-abelian.

Abstract:We derive leading terms in the effective actions describing the coupling of bulk supergravity fields to systems of arbitrary numbers of Dp-branes and D(p+4)-branes in type IIA/IIB string theory. We use these actions to investigate the physics of Dp-D(p+4) systems in the presence of weak background fields. In particular, we construct various solutions describing collections of Dp-branes blown up into open D(p+2)-branes ending on D(p+4)-branes. The configurations are stabilized by the presence of background fields and represent an open-brane analogue of the Myers dielectric effect. To deduce the D-brane actions, we use supersymmetry to derive operators corresponding to moments of various conserved currents in the Berkooz-Douglas matrix model of M-theory in the presence of longitudinal M5-branes and then use dualities to relate these operators to the worldvolume operators appearing in the Dp-D(p+4)-brane effective actions.

Dissolving D0-brane into D2-brane with background B-field

Abstract:D0-branes on a D2-brane with a constant background B-field are unstable due to the presence of a tachyonic mode and expected to dissolve into the D2-brane to formulate a constant D0-charge density. In this paper we study such a dissolution process in terms of a noncommutative gauge theory. Our results show that the localized D0-brane spreads out over all of space on the D2-brane as the tachyon rolls down into a stable vacuum. D0-branes on a D2-brane can be described as unstable solitons in a noncommutative gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions in the Seiberg-Witten limit. In contrast to the case of annihilation of a non-BPS D-brane, we are free from difficulty of disappearance of DOF, since there exist open strings after the tachyon condensation. We solve an equation of motion of the gauge field numerically, and our results show that the localized soliton smears over all of noncommutative space. In addition, we evaluate distributions of D-brane charge, F-string charge, and energy density via formulas derived in Matrix theory. Our results show that the initial singularities of D0-charge and energy density are resolved by turning on the tachyon, and they disperse over the whole space on the D2-brane during the tachyon condensation process.

Abstract:In this article we study D1-D3 (or $\bar{\textrm{D}3}$) brane systems with generic constant electric and magnetic fluxes in IIB string theory. We work out all possible supersymmetric configurations and find out via T-duality all of them and corresponding supersymmetry conditions could be related to the supersymmetric intersecting D1-D1 pairs. And we do D1-D3 (or $\bar{\textrm{D}3}$) open string quantization for a class of configurations. We find that there are many near massless states in NS sector for near-BPS configurations. Furthermore we calculate open string pair creation rate in generic nonsupersymmetric configurations.

Abstract:Starting with the non-BPS D0-brane solution of IIB/$(-1)^{F_L}I_4$ constructed recently by Eyras and Panda we construct via T-duality the non-BPS D2-brane and D1-brane solutions of IIB/$(-1)^{F_L}I_4$ and IIA/$(-1)^{F_L}I_4$ predicted by Sen. The D2-brane couples magnetically to the vector field of the NS5B-brane living in the twisted sector of the Type IIB orbifold, whereas the D1-brane couples (electrically and magnetically) to the self-dual 2-form potential of the NS5A-brane that is present in the twisted sector of the Type IIA orbifold construction. Finally we discuss the eleven dimensional interpretation of these branes as originating from a non-BPS M1-brane solution of M-theory orientifolded by $\Omega_\rho I_5$.

Spherical Branes and the BMN Matrix Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:We study the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^d$ using supersymmetric localisation and holography. We argue that the analytic continuation in dimension to $d=1$ yields a Euclidean version of the BMN matrix quantum mechanics. This system can be analysed at large $N$ using supersymmetric localisation and leads to explicit results for the free energy on $S^d$ and the expectation value of supersymmetric Wilson loops. We show how these results can be reproduced at strong gauge coupling using holography by employing spherical D-brane solutions. We construct these solutions for any value of $d$ using an effective supergravity description and pay particular attention to the subtleties arising in the $d\to1$ limit. Our results have implications for the BMN matrix quantum mechanics and the physics of circular D0-branes.

D-Brane Effective Lagrangian in Spacetimes with Boundaries

Abstract:In this study, we explore the transformation of $D_p$-branes to $D_{p-1}$-branes under T-duality when the $D$-brane is embedded in a spacetime with a boundary. Our goal is to derive the higher-derivative corrections to the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) Lagrangian for both the bulk and boundary terms. For the bulk terms, we calculate the $\alpha'$ corrections for the massless open string fields, up to the 8th order in the dimensionless Maxwell field strength. We demonstrate that the bulk Lagrangian can satisfy the T-duality constraint without residual total derivative terms in the base space. This determines the most general independent couplings of the massless open string fields in the bulk Lagrangian, encompassing 145 coupling constants, up to three parameters. Two of these parameters are physical and are determined by disk-level S-matrix elements, while the third is unphysical and can be eliminated by field redefinitions and integration by parts. The final result for the bulk Lagrangian consists of 49 couplings. For the boundary terms, the application of T-duality symmetry to massless open and closed string fields enables us to extend the DBI Lagrangian to include the boundary unit normal vector field $n_\mu$ and its first derivative.

Anomalies and D-branes in the Dabholkar-Park background

Abstract:We consider D-branes in the Dabholkar-Park (DP) background, a $9$d orientifold theory obtained by gauging symmetry in the type~IIB string theory compactified on a circle. Using anomalies in the world-sheet theory, we provide physical insights into the classification of stable D-branes by relative KR-theory. The nature, such as stability, of D-branes wrapping along the compactified circle can be extracted from information about $1$d Majorana fermions on the boundary of the world-sheet. These Majorana fermions need to be introduced to consistently perform the GSO projection and the orientifold. We also construct D-brane states in the DP background. The spectrum of D-branes characterized by the relative KR-theory is correctly reproduced from the D-brane states.
