Abstract:The BRAHMS collaboration has measured inclusive proton and anti-proton spectra at several rapidities (0 < y < 3) for Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. Rapidity densities of protons, anti-protons, and net-protons [N(p)-N(p-bar)] are presented as a function of rapidity.

Abstract:Field-tuned quantum tunneling of the supramolecular magnet [Mn-4](2) is studied. It is a dimer constructed by two single-molecular clusters, Mn-4(S=9/2), coupled antiferromagnetically. By means of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, The exact solution of the time dependent quantum state is numerically calculated. We obtain the curve of magnetization versus magnetic field applied along the easy axis of magnetization of [Mn-4](2); it clearly displays steplike features separated by plateaus that are relevant to spin tunneling. Our result shows that transition of magnetization is sensitive to the sweep rate. Some resonance transitions may not occur, but they can occur at a more lower sweeping rate of the applied field. Our theoretical result agrees well with the recent experiment [W. Wernsdorfer et al., Nature (London) 416, 406 (2002)].

Abstract:The one-body tunnel picture of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) is not always sufficient to explain the measured tunnel transitions. An improvement to the picture is proposed by including also two-body tunnel transitions such as spin-spin cross-relaxation (SSCR) which are mediated by dipolar and weak superexchange interactions between molecules. A Mn4 SMM is used as a model system. At certain external fields, SSCRs lead to additional quantum resonances which show up in hysteresis loop measurements as well defined steps.

Abstract:The magnetic relaxation and magnetization blocking barriers of butterfly complexes, [Dy2Zn2(L)(4)(NO3)(2)( CH3OH)(2)] (1), [Dy2Mn2(L)(4)(NO3)(2)(DMF)(2)] (2) and [Dy2Co2(L)(4)(NO3)(2)(DMF)(2)]center dot 2DMF (3) (H2L = (E)-2-ethoxy-6-(((2-hydroxyphenyl)imino)methyl)phenol), were systematically investigated. The change of SMM behavior originating from the purposeful replacement of two Zn-II sites in 1 with Mn-II and Co-II was elucidated by a combined experimental and theoretical study. The quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM) was observed in 1. Contrarily, it was quenched in 2 and 3 by spin-spin exchange. A detailed comparative study on these closely-related model complexes reveals the remarkable changes of the ligand field splitting, anisotropy of the Dy-coordinated moiety and the total exchange spectrum due to the replacement of Zn-II with Co-II and Mn-II.

Abstract:We examine the quantum tunneling of magnetization in molecular spin in weak interaction with a bath subject to Redfield master equation. By designing a microscopic model for a multilevel spin system using only a generic Hamiltonian and applying stationary approximation for excited doublets/singlets, we derive a key equation of motion for the quantum tunneling of magnetization process which is applicable in the whole temperature domain. From this equation, we find that in general three tunneling rates are needed to accurately describe the quantum tunneling process. More importantly, behavior of the quantum tunneling in the intermediate temperature domain where there exists a transition between incoherent and coherent quantum tunneling is also unraveled for the first time. Limiting cases at low and high temperature and/or low magnetic field are also worked out where some popular well-known results are reproduced. Last but not least, a new interpretation of the quantum tunneling of magnetization is proposed where we reveal the similarity between this relaxation process with a driven damped harmonic oscillator.

Abstract:A multi-high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance method is used to probe the magnetic excitations of a dimer of single-molecule magnets. The measured spectra display well resolved quantum transitions involving coherent superposition states of both molecules. The behavior may be understood in terms of an isotropic superexchange coupling between pairs of single-molecule magnets, in analogy with several recently proposed quantum devices based on artificially fabricated quantum dots or clusters. These findings highlight the potential utility of supramolecular chemistry in the design of future quantum devices based on molecular nanomagnets.

Abstract:Multi-spins tunneling cross-relaxations in an ensemble of weakly-coupled Ho$^{3+}$ ions, mediated by weak anisotropic dipolar interactions, can be evidenced by ac-susceptibility measurements in a high temperature regime. Based on a four-body representation, including the rare-earth nuclear spin, two-ions tunneling mechanisms can be attributed to both dipolar-biased tunneling and co-tunneling processes. The co-reversal involving entangled pairs of magnetic moments is discussed with a particular emphasis, giving new evidences to elucidate the many-body quantum dynamics.

Abstract:We analyze the charge transport in a ferromagnet/quantum dot/superconductor system assuming an exchange-type interaction on the quantum dot. The nonequilibrium Green’s function method is employed to calculate the tunneling charge conductance. When the ferromagnetic lead is in the half-metallic limit, the key mechanism governing the low-energy charge transport of this hybrid structure is the so-called same-spin-band Andreev reflection, in which the incident electron and the Andreev reflected hole belong to the same spin-band. The same-spin-band Andreev reflection depends sensitively on the relative angle θ between the exchange field in ferromagnetic lead and the exchange field in quantum dot, and may induce giant magnetoresistance effect in the low temperature regime.

Abstract:: The tunneling behaviors of the magnetization vector are studied in ferromagnetic systems with trigonal and hexagonal crystal symmetries, respectively. The Euclidean transition amplitudes between the energetically degenerate easy directions are evaluated with the help of the dilute instanton-gas approximation. By using the effective Hamiltonian method, the ground-state tunneling level splittings are clearly shown for each kind of symmetry and are found to depend on the parity of the total spin of the ferromagnetic particle. The effective Hamiltonian method is demonstrated to be equivalent to the dilute instanton-gas approximation. Possible relevance to experiments is discussed.

Abstract:Spin-phase interference effects are studied analytically in resonant quantum tunneling of the N\'eel vector between degenerate excited levels in nanometer-scale single-domain antiferromagnets in the absence of an external magnetic field. We consider a model for mesoscopic antiferromagnets with uncompensated excess spins for the more general structure of magnetic anisotropy, such as biaxial, trigonal, tetragonal, and hexagonal crystal symmetry. This study provides a nontrivial generalization of the Kramers degeneracy for a double-well system to coherently spin tunneling at ground states as well as low-lying excited states in an antiferromagnetic system with m-fold rotational symmetry around the $\mathrm{z\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}$ axis. The energy level spectrum and the thermodynamic properties of magnetic tunneling states are found to depend significantly on the parity of the excess spins at sufficiently low temperatures. Possible relevance to experiments is also discussed.

Abstract:We present an analytical theory on the heights of the quantum steps observed in the hysteresis loops of molecular magnets. By considering the dipolar interaction between molecular spins, our theory successfully yields the step heights measured in experiments, and reveals a scaling law for the dependence of the heights on the sweeping rates hidden in the experiment data on Fe$_8$ and Mn$_4$. With this theory, we show how to accurately determine the tunnel splitting of a single molecular spin from the step heights.

Abstract:A Mn4 single-molecule magnet (SMM), with a well isolated spin ground state of S = 9/2, is used as a model system to study Landau-Zener (LZ) tunneling in the presence of weak intermolecular dipolar and exchange interactions. The anisotropy constants D and B are measured with minor hysteresis loops. A transverse field is used to tune the tunnel splitting over a large range. Using the LZ and inverse LZ method, it is shown that these interactions play an important role in the tunnel rates. Three regions are identified: (i) at small transverse fields, tunneling is dominated by single tunnel transitions; (ii) at intermediate transverse fields, the measured tunnel rates are governed by reshuffling of internal fields, (iii) at larger transverse fields, the magnetization reversal starts to be influenced by the direct relaxation process, and many-body tunnel events may occur. The hole digging method is used to study the next-nearest neighbor interactions. At small external fields, it is shown that magnetic ordering occurs which does not quench tunneling. An applied transverse field can increase the ordering rate. Spin-spin cross-relaxations, mediated by dipolar and weak exchange interactions, are proposed to explain additional quantum steps.

Novel Quantum Spin Assisted Tunneling in Half Metallic Manganite Tunnel Junctions

Abstract:The electron tunneling in half metallic manganite tunnel junctions is studied by using a quantum mechanically treated double exchange model. We show that the stimulation of spin excitations, caused by the strong Hund's coupling between the conduction $e_g$ electrons and the localized quantum spins of the manganite ions, would assist electrons to tunnel through the junction even with the antiparallel aligned magnetizations of the electrodes. This mechanism gives rise to an extra tunnel conductance, in addition to that predicted by Julliere's model. Our theory is in good agreement with the voltage dependence of the tunnel conductance in manganite tunnel junctions observed by experiments.

Abstract:The synthesis of molecular magnets has undergone rapid progress in recent years. Each of the identical molecular units can contain as few as two and up to several dozens of paramagnetic ions (spins). Although these materials appear as macroscopic samples, i.e. crystals or powders, the intermolecular magnetic interactions are utterly negligible as compared to the intramolecular interactions. Therefore, measurements of their magnetic properties reflect mainly ensemble properties of single molecules. Their magnetic features promise a variety of applications in physics, magneto-chemistry, biology, biomedicine and material sciences as well as in quantum computing. It appears that in the majority of these molecules the localized single-particle magnetic moments couple antiferromagnetically and the spectrum is rather well described by the Heisenberg model with isotropic nearest neighbor interaction sometimes augmented by anisotropy terms. Thus, the interest in the Heisenberg model, which is known already for a long time, but used mostly for infinite one-, two-, and three-dimensional systems, was renewed by the successful synthesis of magnetic molecules. Studying such spin arrays focuses on qualitatively new physics caused by the finite size of the system. Theoretical inorganic chemistry itself provides several methods to understand and describe molecular magnetism. In this contribution we would like to focus on those subjects which are of general interest in the context of quantum magnetism.

Abstract:In order to probe the magnetic relaxation mechanism of 3d-4f complexes systematically, two “Butterfly” MII 2DyIII 2 complexes related to our previously reported butterfly compound, [Zn2Dy2(L)4(Ac)2(DMF)2]·4CH3CN (1), and formulated as [Co2Dy2(L)4(Ac)2(DMF)2]·3CH3CN (2) and [Ni2Dy2(L)4(Ac)2(DMF)2]·3CH3CN (3) are prepared and characterized. In comparison to complex 1, the replacement of CoII or NiII with ZnII led to the effective quenching of quantum tunneling of the magnetization (QTM) in complexes 2 and 3. Obviously, the introduction of 3d-4f spin–spin exchange can be important in determining the overall magnetic behaviors of 3d-4f {MII 2DyIII 2} “Butterfly” systems.

Abstract:We study electronic transport through quantum dots weakly coupled to ferromagnetic leads with collinear magnetization directions. Tunneling contributions of first and second order in the tunnel-coupling strength are taken into account. We analyze the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) for all combinations of linear and nonlinear response, at or off resonance, with an even or odd dot-electron number. Different mechanisms for transport and spin accumulation the various regimes give rise to different TMR behavior.

Abstract:We characterize molecular magnet heterojunctions in which sublimated CoPc films as thin as 5 nm are sandwiched between transparent conducting bottom-layer indium tin oxide and top-layer soft-landing eutectic GaIn (EGaIn) electrodes. The roughness of the cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) films was determined by atomic force microscopy to be on the order of several nanometers, and crystalline ordering of lying-down planar molecules was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics reveal the onset of a superconducting gap at Tc = 6 K, which together with higher temperature fits to a modified Simmons' model, provide incontrovertible evidence for direct quantum mechanical tunneling processes through the magnetic molecules in our heterojunctions. The voltage dependent features in the differential conductance measurements relate to spin states of single molecules or aggregates of molecules and should prove to be important for quantum information device development.

Abstract:It is shown that a single molecular magnet placed in a rapidly oscillating magnetic field displays the phenomenon of quenching of tunneling processes. The results open a way to manipulate the quantum states of molecular magnets by means of radiation in the terahertz range. Our analysis separates the time evolution into slow and fast components thereby obtaining an effective theory for the slow dynamics. This effective theory presents quenching of the tunnel effect. In particular, stands out its difference with the so-called coherent destruction of tunneling. We support our prediction with numerical evidence based on an exact solution of the Schrödinger's equation.

Abstract:Semiconductor magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs), composed of diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMSs) sandwiching a semiconductor barrier, have potential applications in spintronics but their development has been slow due to the difficulty of controlling the magnetism of DMSs. In terms of density functional calculations for model semiconductor MTJs, (Zn,Co)O/ZnO/(Zn,Co)O and (Ga,Mn)N/GaN/(Ga,Mn)N, we show that the magnetic coupling between the transition metal ions in each DMS electrode of such semiconductor MTJs can be switched from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic, or vice versa, under the application of external electric field across the junctions. Our results suggest a possible avenue for the application of semiconductor MTJs.
Quantum tunneling of the magnetization in systems with anisotropic 4f ion pairs: Rates from low temperature zero field relaxation

Abstract:Anisotropic open shell 4f ions have magnetic moments that can be read and written as atomic bits. If it comes to qbits where the phase of the wave function has to be written, controlled and read, it is of advantage to rely on more than one atom that carries the quantum information of the system because states with different susceptibilities may be addressed. Such systems are realized for pairs of lanthanides in single molecule magnets, where four pseudospin states are found and mixed in quantum tunneling processes. For the case of endohedral fullerenes like Dy2S@C82 or Tb2ScN@C80 the quantum tunneling of the magnetisation is imprinted in the magnetisation lifetimes at sub-Kelvin temperatures. A Hamiltonian that includes quantum tunneling of the magnetisation predicts the lifting of the zero field ground state degeneracy and non-linear coupling to magnetic fields in such systems.

Abstract:Electron tunnelling in solids, a fundamental quantum phenomenon, lays the foundation for various modern technologies. The emergence of van der Waals magnets presents opportunities for discovering unconventional tunnelling phenomena. Here, we demonstrate quantum tunnelling with tunable spin geometric phases in a multilayer van der Waals antiferromagnet CrPS 4 . The spin geometric phase of electron tunnelling is controlled by magnetic-field-dependent metamagnetic phase transitions. The square lattice of a CrPS 4 monolayer causes strong t 2g -orbital delocalization near the conduction band minimum. This creates a one-dimensional spin system with reversed energy ordering between the t 2g and e g spin channels, which prohibits both intralayer spin relaxation by means of collective magnon excitations and interlayer spin hopping between the t 2g and e g spin channels. The resulting coherent electron transmission shows pronounced tunnel magnetoresistance oscillations, manifesting quantum interference of cyclic quantum evolutions of individual electron Bloch waves by means of the time-reversal symmetrical tunnelling loops. Our results suggest the appearance of Aharonov–Anandan phases that originate from the non-adiabatic generalization of the Berry's phase.
