Abstract:The AMS-02 detector will operate for at least 3 years on the International Space Station, measuring cosmic ray spectra at about 400 km above sea level over a wide range of geomagnetic latitude. The proximity focusing ring imaging Čerenkov counter of AMS-02 will measure the particle velocity $\beta$ with $\approx 0.1%$ uncertainty, making possible to discriminate Beryllium isotopes up to about 15 GeV/nucl. In addition its charge measurement will allow to study the elemental composition of cosmic rays up to Iron. A prototype of the RICH detector was tested with cosmic rays and on a ion beam accelerated by SPS, at CERN (October 2002).

Abstract:The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) to be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) will measure charged cosmic ray spectra of elements up to iron, in the rigidity range from 1 GV to 1 TV, for at least three years. AMS is a large angular spectrometer composed of different subdetectors, including a proximity focusing Ring Imaging CHerenkov (RICH) detector. This will be equipped with a mixed radiator made of aerogel and sodium fluoride (NaF), a lateral conical mirror and a detection plane made of 680 photomultipliers coupled to light guides. The RICH detector allows measurements of particle's electric charge up to iron, and particle's velocity. Two possible methods for reconstructing the Cherenkov angle and the electric charge with the RICH will be discussed. A RICH prototype consisting of a detection matrix with 96 photomultipliers, a segment of a conical mirror and samples of the radiator materials was built and its performance was evaluated using ion beam data. Results from the last test beam performed with ion fragments resulting from the collision of a 158 GeV/c/nucleon primary beam of indium ions (CERN SPS) on a lead target are reported. The large amount of collected data allowed to test and characterize different aerogel samples and the NaF radiator. In addition, the reflectivity of the mirror was evaluated. The data analysis confirms the design goals.

Abstract:The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) to be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) will be equipped with a proximity Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector for measuring the velocity and electric charge of the charged cosmic particles. This detector will contribute to the high level of redundancy required for AMS as well as to the rejection of albedo particles. Charge separation up to iron and a velocity resolution of the order of 0.1% for singly charged particles are expected. Abstract:ABSTRACTThe second home-made single stage accelerator mass spectrometer (SSAMS) system dedicated to radiocarbon (14C) measurements was built after the first SSAMS system was moved to Guangxi Normal University. With some improvements to the second SSAMS system, the performance has been improved. With the conditions of total ion energy of 200KeV, ions charge states of 1+ and helium as stripper gas, 14C measurements with precision of 0.5% and a background level of 0.5 pMC were achieved. Details of the system and the experimental performance are given here.

Abstract:A home-made AMS system dedicate to C-14 measurements was built and tested at China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE). The system is a kind of a single stage AMS system with a working voltage of 230 kV. The overall dimensions of the system are 4.6 x 2.4 m(2). After the system was installed, systematic experiments have been carried out to optimize the system performance. In these test experiments, C-14 measurements with precision of 0.8% and a background level of 0.6 pMC were achieved. Details of the system and the experimental performance are given.

Abstract:The Selex experiment measured several billion charged hadron tracks with a high precision magnetic momentum spectrometer and high precision RICH velocity spectrometer. We have analyzed these data to simultaneously measure the masses of all the long lived charged hadrons and anti-hadrons from the pi to the Omega using the same detector and technique. The statistical precision achievable with this data sample is more than adequate for 0.1% mass measurements We have used these measurements to develop and understand the systematic effects of a RICH as a precision velocity spectrometer with the goal of measuring 10 masses with precision ranging from 100 KeV for the lightest to 1000 KeV for the heaviest. This requires controlling the radius measurement of RICH rings to the ~10^{-4} level. Progress in the mass measurements and the required RICH analysis techniques developed are discussed.

Abstract:We report on the status of the in-beam hyperfine-structure measurements on ground-state antihydrogen by ASACUSA and on recent results obtained in supporting measurements from hydrogen. The $\sigma_1$ and $\pi_1$ transitions can now be investigated, which is beneficial from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. We discuss systematic effects from resonance interference originating from the chosen field geometries in the interaction region, and how their impact can be managed by appropriate data-taking or design concepts.

Abstract:This work presents the analog circuitry of the FastRICH ASIC, a 16-channel ASIC, developed in a 65 nm CMOS technology specifically designed for the RICH detector at LHCb to readout detectors like Photomultiplier Tubes to be used at the LHC Run 4 and Silicon Photomultipliers candidates for Run 5. The front-end (FE) stage has an input impedance below 50 Ω and an input dynamic range from 5 μA to 5 mA with a power consumption of ∼5 mW/channel. The chip includes a Leading Edge Comparator (LED) and a Constant Fraction Discriminator (CFD) for time pick-off and a Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) for digitization.

Abstract:First results for the AMS silicon tracker readout performance are presented. Small 20.0×20.0×0.300mm3 silicon microstrip detectors were installed in a 50GeV electron beam at CERN. The detector readout consisted of prototypes of the tracker data reduction card equipped with a 12-bit ADC and the tracker frontend hybrid with VA_hdr readout chips. The system performance is assessed in terms of signal-to-noise, position resolution, and efficiency.
Measurement of the muon anomaly to high and even higher precision

Abstract:Our recent series of measurements at Brookhaven National Laboratory determined the muon anomalous magnetic moment \amu to a precision of 0.5 ppm. The final result--representing the average of five running periods using both positive and negative muons--is $\amu ^\pm = 11 659 208(6) \times 10^{-10}$. It lies 2.7 standard deviations above the standard model expectation, which is based on updates given at this Workshop. Importantly, only the $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation and new KLOE radiative return data are used for the hadronic vacuum polarization input. Because the systematic limit has not been reached in the experiment, a new effort has been proposed and approved with the highest scientific priority at Brookhaven. The goal is an experimental uncertainty of 0.2 ppm, a 2.5-fold reduction in the overall experimental uncertainty. To do so will require a suite of upgrades and several qualitative changes in the philosophy of how the measurement is carried out. I discuss the old and new experiments with a particular emphasis on the technical matters that require change for the future.

Abstract:We have developed a new type of particle identification device, called an Aerogel Ring Imaging Cherenkov (ARICH) counter, for the Belle II experiment. It uses silica aerogel tiles as Cherenkov radiators. For detection of Cherenkov photons, Hybrid Avalanche Photo-Detectors (HAPDs) are used. The designed HAPD has a high sensitivity to single photons under a strong magnetic field. We have confirmed that the HAPD provides high efficiency for single-photon detection even after exposure to neutron and gamma-ray radiation that exceeds the levels expected in the 10-year Belle II operation. In order to confirm the basic performance of the ARICH counter system, we carried out a beam test at the DESY using a prototype of the ARICH counter with six HAPD modules. The results are in agreement with our expectations and confirm the suitability of the ARICH counter for the Belle II experiment. Based on the in-beam performance of the device, we expect that the identification efficiency at 3.5 GeV/c is 97.4% and 4.9% for pions and kaons, respectively. This paper summarizes the development of the HAPD for the ARICH and the evaluation of the performance of the prototype ARICH counter built with the final design components.

Abstract:In preparation for the high luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider, a new data conversion and digital processing ASIC, called LiTE-DTU, was designed. Implemented in a 65 nm CMOS technology, the LiTE-DTU features two 12-bit 160 MS s -1 successive approximation register time-interleaved ADCs, a data processing unit and enables efficient data transmission at 1.28 Gbps. The LiTE-DTU has undergone extensive testing in both laboratory and beam tests, demonstrating excellent performance in the pre-production version, showing the production readiness of the design. The results of this comprehensive series of tests will be presented.

Abstract:The Aerogel Ring Imaging Cherenkov (ARICH) counter serves as a particle identification device in the forward end-cap region of the Belle II spectrometer. It is capable of identifying pions and kaons with momenta up to $4 \, {\rm GeV}/c$ by detecting Cherenkov photons emitted in the silica aerogel radiator. After the detector alignment and calibration of the probability density function, we evaluate the performance of the ARICH counter using early beam collision data. Event samples of $D^{\ast +} \to D^0 \pi^+ (D^0 \to K^-\pi^+)$ were used to determine the $\pi(K)$ efficiency and the $K(\pi)$ misidentification probability. We found that the ARICH counter is capable of separating kaons from pions with an identification efficiency of $93.5 \pm 0.6 \, \%$ at a pion misidentification probability of $10.9 \pm 0.9 \, \%$. This paper describes the identification method of the counter and the evaluation of the performance during its early operation.

Abstract:The RICH detectors of the LHCb experiment provide identification of hadrons produced in high energy proton-proton collisions in the LHC at CERN over a wide momentum range (2 to 100 GeV/c). Cherenkov light is collected on photon detector planes sensitive to single photons. The RICH will be upgraded (in 2019) to read out every bunch crossing, at a rate of 40 MHz. The current hybrid photon detectors (HPD) will be replaced with multi-anode photomultiplier tubes (customisations of the Hamamatsu R11265 and the H12699 MaPMTs). These 8$\times$8 pixel devices meet the experimental requirements thanks to their small pixel size, high gain, negligible dark count rate ($\sim$50 Hz/cm$^2$) and moderate cross-talk. The measured performance of several tubes is reported, together with their long-term stability. A new 8-channel front-end chip, named CLARO, has been designed in 0.35 $\mu$m CMOS AMS technology for the MaPMT readout. The CLARO chip operates in binary mode and combines low power consumption (\hbox{$\sim$1 mW/Ch}), wide bandwidth (baseline restored in $\leq$25 ns) and radiation hardness. A 12-bit digital register permits the optimisation of the dynamic range and the threshold level for each channel and provides tools for the on-site calibration. The design choices and the characterization of the electronics are presented.

Abstract:The mission of the Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) in Darmstadt is to explore the QCD phase diagram at high net baryon densities likely to exist in the core of neutron stars. The CBM detector system is designed to perform multi-differential measurements of hadrons and leptons in central gold-gold collisions at beam energies between 2 and 11 A GeV with unprecedented precision and statistics. In order to reduce the systematic errors of the lepton measurements, which generally suffer from a large combinatorial background, both electrons and muons will be measured with the same acceptance. Up to now, no di-muon measurements have been performed in heavy-ion collisions at beam energies below 158A GeV. The main device for electron identification, a Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector, can be replaced by a setup comprising hadron absorbers and tracking detectors for muon measurements. In order to obtain a complete picture of the reaction, it is important to measure simultaneously leptons and hadrons. This requirement is fulfilled for the RICH, which has a low material budget, and only little affects the trajectories of hadrons on their way to the Time-of-Flight (TOF) detector. In contrast, the simultaneous measurement of muons and hadrons within the same experimental acceptance poses a substantial challenge. This article reviews the simulated performance of the CBM experiment for muon identification, together with the possibility of simultaneous hadron measurements.

Abstract:The Jefferson Lab CLAS12 detector will provide a world-leading facility for the study of electron-nucleon scattering. The CLAS12 physics program is very broad and includes studies on quarks dynamics as well as studies on the meson and baryon spectroscopy with quasi-real photoproduction in a large variety of final states. The particle identification will be complemented by a ring imaging Cherenkov detector (RICH), that will provide separation of kaons from protons and pions in the momentum range between 3 and 8 GeV/c allowing the study of pion and kaon electroproduction in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering as well as studying double and triple strange baryons. In this article, we will focus on the new technologies developed for the RICH, especially on the complex optical system, that allows to reduce the photo-detection area. Particular attention is given to the characterization of the surface in relationship with the simulation capability of GEANT4.

Abstract:The LHCb experiment has been taking data at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN since the end of 2009. One of its key detector components is the Ring-Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) system. This provides charged particle identification over a wide momentum range, from 2–100 GeV/c. The operation and control, software, and online monitoring of the RICH system are described. The particle identification performance is presented, as measured using data from the LHC. Excellent separation of hadronic particle types (π, K, p) is achieved.

Abstract:The ePIC experiment at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) aims to use silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) as the photodetector technology for the dual-radiator ring-imaging Cherenkov detector (dRICH). Despite their advantages for this low light application and insensitivity to high magnetic fields, SiPMs are sensitive to radiation and require rigorous testing to ensure that their single-photon counting capabilities and dark count rate are kept under control over the years of operation. The presented results show the successful use of a complete prototype readout chain based on the ALCOR chip for SiPM characterization measurements and assembled in an optical plane for test-beam measurements using the dRICH prototype.

Abstract:The project is conducting a series of muonic X-ray measurements in medium- and high-Z nuclei at PSI, utilizing a high-purity germanium detector array, in-beam muon detectors, and a modern digital data-acquisition system. A novel hydrogen target for muon transfer was developed, enabling measurements with as little as a few micrograms of target material. First measurements with radioactive Cm and Ra targets were conducted, aimed at determining their nuclear charge radii. These serve as important input for upcoming atomic parity violation experiments. The apparatus is also used to perform a feasibility study of an atomic parity violation experiment with the 2s-1s 2 s − 1 s muonic X-ray transition. In addition, the setup has been made available for a wider range of nuclear, particle, and solid-state physics measurements.
