Abstract:We present initial results from a new 440-ks Chandra HETG GTO observation of the canonical Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068. The proximity of NGC 1068, together with Chandra's superb spatial and spectral resolution, allow an unprecedented view of its nucleus and circumnuclear NLR. We perform the first spatially resolved high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the `ionization cone' in any AGN, and use the sensitive line diagnostics offered by the HETG to measure the ionization state, density, and temperature at discrete points along the ionized NLR. We argue that the NLR takes the form of outflowing photoionized gas, rather than gas that has been collisionally ionized by the small-scale radio jet in NGC 1068. We investigate evidence for any velocity gradients in the outflow, and describe our next steps in modeling the spatially resolved spectra as a function of distance from the nucleus.

A Comprehensive X-ray Spectral Analysis of the Seyfert 1.5 NGC 3227

Abstract:We present results of a 100 ks XMM observation of the Seyfert 1.5 NGC 3227. Our best-fit broadband model to the pn spectrum consists of a moderately flat (photon index 1.57) hard X-ray power-law absorbed by cold gas with N_H = 3 * 10^21 cm^-2, plus a strong soft excess, modeled as a steep power law with a photon index of 3.35, absorbed by cold gas with N_H = 9 * 10^20 cm^-2. The soft excess normalization increases by ~20% in ~20 ks, independently of the hard X-ray component, and the UV continuum, tracked via the OM, also shows a strong increasing trend over the observation, consistent with reprocessing of soft X-ray emission. Warm absorber signatures are evident in both the EPIC and RGS; we model two layers, with log(xi) = 1.2 and 2.9 erg cm s^-1, and with similar column densities (~1-2 * 10^21 cm^-2). The outflow velocities relative to systemic of the high- and low-ionization absorbers are estimated to be -(2060(+240,-170)) km/s and -(420(+430,-190)) km/s, respectively. The Fe K alpha line width FWHM is 7000 +/- 1500 km/s; its inferred radius is consistent with the BLR and with the inner radius of the dust reverberation-mapped by Suganuma et al. An emission feature near 6.0 keV is modeled equally well as a narrow redshifted Fe K line, possibly associated with a disk "hot-spot," or as the red wing to a relativistically broadened Fe line profile. Swift-BAT and archival RXTE data suggest at most weak Compton reflection (R <~ 0.5), and a high-energy cutoff near 100 keV. From RXTE monitoring, we find tentative evidence for a significant fraction of the Fe line flux to track continuum variations on time scales < 700 days.

Test for Echo: X-ray Reflection Variability in the Seyfert-2 AGN NGC 4388

Abstract:We report on a study of the narrow Fe K$\alpha$ line and reflection spectrum in the well-known Seyfert-2 AGN, NGC 4388. X-ray spectra summed from two extensive NICER monitoring campaigns, separated by years, show strong evidence of variation in the direct continuum and reflected emission, but only small variations in the obscuring gas. Fits to the spectra from individual NICER observations find a strong, positive correlation between the power-law photon index, $\Gamma$, and direct flux that is commonly observed in unobscured AGN. A search for a reverberation lag between the direct and reflected spectra -- dominated by the narrow Fe K$\alpha$ emission line -- measures a time scale of $t = 16.37^{+0.46}_{-0.38}$ days, or a characteristic radius of $r=1.374_{-0.032}^{+0.039}\times10^{-2}$ pc $=3.4_{-0.1}^{+0.1}\times10^4\;GM/c^2$. Only one cycle of this tentative lag is observed, but it is driven by a particularly sharp drop in the direct continuum that leads to the subsequent disappearance of the otherwise prominent Fe K$\alpha$ line. Physically motivated fits to high-resolution Chandra spectra of NGC 4388 measure a line production radius of $r =2.9^{+1.2}_{-0.7}~\times 10^{4}~GM/c^{2}$, formally consistent with the tentative lag. The line profile also prefers a Compton-thick reflector, indicating an origin in the disk and/or thick clumps within a wind. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of our analysis and methods for testing our results in future observations, and we note the potential for X-ray reverberation lags to constrain black hole masses in obscured Seyferts wherein the optical broad line region is not visible.

Warm Absorbers and Outflows in the Seyfert-1 Galaxy NGC 4051

Abstract:We present both phenomenological and more physical photoionization models of the Chandra HETG spectra of the Seyfert-1 AGN NGC 4051. We detect 40 absorption and emission lines, encompassing highly ionized charge states from O, Ne, Mg, Si, S and the Fe L-shell and K-shell. Two independent photoionization packages, XSTAR and Cloudy, were both used to self-consistently model the continuum and line spectra. These fits detected three absorbing regions in this system with densities ranging from 10^{10} to 10^{11} cm^{-3}. In particular, our XSTAR models require three components that have ionization parameters of log \xi = 4.5, 3.3, & 1.0, and are located within the BLR at 70, 300, and 13,000 R_g, respectively, assuming a constant wind density. Larger radii are inferred for density profiles which decline with radius. The Cloudy models give a similar set of parameters with ionization parameters of log \xi = 5.0, 3.6, & 2.2 located at 40, 200, and 3,300 R_g. We demonstrate that these regions are out-flowing from the system, and carry a small fraction of material out of the system relative to the implied mass accretion rate. The data suggest that magnetic fields may be an important driving mechanism.

Abstract:The infrared is a key wavelength regime for probing the dusty, obscured nuclear regions of active galaxies. We present results from an infrared study of 87 nearby Seyfert galaxies using the Spitzer Space Telescope and ground-based telescopes. Combining detailed modelling of the 3 - 100 micron spectral energy distributions with mid-IR spectral diagnostics and near-infrared observations, we find broad support for the unified model of AGNs. The IR emission of Seyfert 1s and 2s is consistent with their having the same type of central engine viewed at a different orientation. The nature of the putative torus is becoming clearer; in particular we present evidence that it is likely a clumpy medium. Mid-infrared correlations between tracers of star formation and AGN ionizing luminosity reveal the starburst-AGN connection implied by the black hole/bulge mass relation, however it is not yet clear if this is due to feedback.

Abstract:We present a spectral and imaging analysis of the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy ESO138-G001, with the aim of characterizing the circumnuclear material responsible for the soft (0.3-2.0 keV) and hard (5-10 keV) X-ray emission. We confirm that the source is absorbed by Compton-thick gas. However, if a self-consistent model of reprocessing from cold toroidal material is used (MYTorus), a possible scenario requires the absorber to be inhomogenous, its column density along the line of sight being larger than the average column density integrated over all lines- of-sight through the torus. The iron emission line may be produced by moderately ionised iron (FeXII-FeXIII), as suggested by the shifted centroid energy and the low K{\beta}/K{\alpha} flux ratio. The soft X-ray emission is dominated by emission features, whose main excitation mechanism appears to be photoionisation, as confirmed by line diagnostics and the use of self-consistent models (CLOUDY).

Abstract:The galaxies M82, NGC 253, NGC 1068, and NGC 4945 have been detected in gamma-rays by Fermi. Previously, we developed and tested a model for cosmic ray interactions in the starburst galaxy M82. Now, we aim to explore the differences between starburst and active galactic nuclei (AGN) environments by applying our self-consistent model to the starburst galaxy NGC 253 and the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. Assuming constant cosmic-ray acceleration efficiency by supernova remnants with Milky-Way parameters, we calculate the cosmic-ray proton and primary and secondary electron/positron populations, predict the radio and gamma-ray spectra, and compare with published measurements. We find that our models easily fits the observed gamma-ray spectrum for NGC 253 while constraining the cosmic ray source spectral index and acceleration efficiency. However, we encountered difficultly modeling the observed radio data and constraining the speed of the galactic wind and the magnetic field strength, unless the gas mass is less than currently preferred values. Additionally, our starburst model consistently underestimates the observed gamma-ray flux and overestimates the radio flux for NGC 1068; these issues would be resolved if the AGN is the primary source of gamma-rays. We discuss the implications of these results and make predictions for the neutrino fluxes for both galaxies.

Deep Chandra Observations of NGC 5728. III: Probing the High-Resolution X-ray Morphology and Multiphase ISM Interactions in the Circumnuclear Region

Abstract:We present a detailed imaging analysis of 260 ks of sub-arcsecond resolution Chandra Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS-S) observations of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5728. Our study focuses on the bright and diffuse soft X-ray emission within the galaxy's inner ~1 kpc. By comparing the X-ray emission across different energy bands, we identify localized variations in the absorbing column and emission processes. We observe more X-ray absorption in the direction perpendicular to the bicone, which is co-located with an inner warped CO disk in the galaxy. The innermost region, which shows the strongest excess of hard X-ray emission, is spatially coincident with the CO(2-1) emission from ALMA and dusty spirals observed in a Hubble Space Telescope V-H color map. We detect soft extended emission associated with the circumnuclear star-forming ring at ~1 kpc, suggestive of hot gas with kT=0.44 keV. We derive measurements for the hot gas mass, M=7.9x10^5 solar masses, pressure, p=2.0x10^-10 dyne per square cm, and cooling times, t=193.2 Myr. In the vicinity of the star-forming ring, we detect two X-ray point sources with soft X-ray spectra and 0.3-7 keV luminosities L~8x10^38 erg per second. These properties suggest X-ray binaries.

Nuclear Infrared Spectral Energy Distribution of Type II Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract:We present near and mid--IR observations of a sample of Seyfert II galaxies drawn from the $12\mu$m Galaxy Sample. The sample was observed in the J, H, K, L, M and N bands. Galaxy Surface Brightness Profiles are modeled using nuclear, bulge, bar (when necessary) and disk components. To check the reliability of our findings the procedure was tested using {\em Spitzer\/} observations of M\,31. Nuclear Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) are determined for 34 objects, and optical spectra are presented for 38, including analysis of their stellar populations using the STARLIGHT spectral synthesis code. Emission line diagnostic-diagrams are used to discriminate between genuine AGN and HII nuclei. Combining our observations with those found in the literature, we have a total of 40 SEDs. It is found that about 40\%\ of the SEDs are characterized by an upturn in the near-IR, which we have quantified as a NIR slope $\alpha < 1$ for an SED characterized as $\lambda f_{\lambda} \propto \lambda^{\alpha}$. Three objects with an HII nucleus and two Seyfert nuclei with strong contamination from a circumnuclear starburst, also show an upturn. For genuine AGN this component could be explained as emission from the accretion disk, a jet, or from a very hot dust component leaking from the central region through a clumpy obscuring structure. The presence of a very compact nuclear starburst as the origin for this NIR excess emission is not favored by our spectroscopic data for these objects.

A Chandra-HETG VIEW OF MCG +8-11-11

Abstract:We present a spectral analysis of the 118 ks High Energy Transmission Gratings (HETG) observation of the X-ray bright Seyfert 1.5 galaxy MCG +8-11-11, in conjunction with 100 ks of archival Suzaku data, aimed at investigating the signatures of warm absorption and Compton reflection reported from previous Suzaku and XMM-Newton studies of the source. Contrary to previous results, we find that warm absorption is not required by the data. Instead, we report upper limits on absorption lines that are below previous (marginal) detections. Fe Ka line emission is clearly detected and is likely resolved with sigma ~ 0.02 keV with the HETG data. We applied self-consistent, broadband spectral-fitting models to the HETG and Suzaku data to investigate this and other signatures of distant absorption and reflection. Utilizing in particular the MYTorus model, we find that the data are consistent with reprocessing by a distant, neutral torus that is Compton thick and out of the line-of-sight. However, we do not find compelling evidence of a relativistically-broadened Fe-K emission line, which is often expected from type 1 AGN. This is consistent with some, although not all, previous studies of MCG +8-11-11. A well-measured edge is identified by the HETG near 0.5 keV, indicating neutral absorption in the line of sight that is consistent with galactic absorption; however, the absorption may be partially intrinsic to the source. The HETG data are consistent with the presence of a soft excess, a feature that may be missed by considering the Suzaku data alone.

The Highest Resolution Chandra View of Photoionization and Jet-Cloud Interaction in the Nuclear Region of NGC 4151

Abstract:We report high resolution imaging of the nucleus of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 obtained with a 50 ks Chandra HRC observation. The HRC image resolves the emission on spatial scales of 0.5", ~30 pc, showing an extended X-ray morphology overall consistent with the narrow line region (NLR) seen in optical line emission. Removal of the bright point-like nuclear source and image deconvolution techniques both reveal X-ray enhancements that closely match the substructures seen in the Hubble Space Telescope [OIII] image and prominent knots in the radio jet. We find that most of the NLR clouds in NGC 4151 have [OIII] to soft X-ray ratio ~10, despite the distance of the clouds from the nucleus. This ratio is consistent with the values observed in NLRs of some Seyfert 2 galaxies, which indicates a uniform ionization parameter even at large radii and a density decreasing as $r^{-2}$ as expected for a nuclear wind scenario. The [OIII]/X-ray ratios at the location of radio knots show an excess of X-ray emission, suggesting shock heating in addition to photoionization. We examine various mechanisms for the X-ray emission and find that, in contrast to jet-related X-ray emission in more powerful AGN, the observed jet parameters in NGC 4151 are inconsistent with synchrotron emission, synchrotron self-Compton, inverse Compton of CMB photons or galaxy optical light. Instead, our results favor thermal emission from the interaction between radio outflow and NLR gas clouds as the origin for the X-ray emission associated with the jet. This supports previous claims that frequent jet-ISM interaction may explain why jets in Seyfert galaxies appear small, slow, and thermally dominated, distinct from those kpc scale jets in the radio galaxies.

Abstract:The physical conditions of the gas forming the narrow line regions (NLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGN) have been extensively studied in the optical band. We take advantage of the spectacular extension ($\sim$15") of the NLR in the type II Seyfert galaxy NGC 5252 and of the complementary characteristics of $XMM$--$Newton$ and $Chandra$ to investigate the physical conditions of the gas in this galaxy. The X-ray data from $XMM$--$Newton$ are used to define the spectral properties of the ionising nuclear source. The $Chandra$ data are used to trace the spatial characteristics of the soft X-ray emission. This information is then compared to the HST characteristics. The X-ray spectrum of the nucleus of NGC 5252 is intrinsically flat and absorbed by neutral gas with a column density N~10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. Below 1 keV a soft excess is detected. The high-resolution spectrum obtained with the XMM-Newton RGS shows the presence, in the 0.2-1.5 keV range, of emission lines which strongly indicate that the soft X-ray component is due to ionised gas. Moreover, the soft X-ray emission is spatially resolved around and well overlaps the images obtained in narrow [OIII] optical band. The [OIII]/soft-X flux ratios along the ionisation cones is basically constant. This indicates that the electron density does not significantly deviates from the r$^{-2}$ law (constant ionisation parameter). This result combined with previous optical studies suggest two plausible but different scenarios in the reconstruction of the last 30000 years history of the central AGN. The most promising one is that the source is indeed a "quasar relic" with steady and inefficient energy release from the accretion of matter onto the central super-massive black-hole. This scenario is suggested also by the flat nuclear X-ray spectrum that suggests an advection dominate accretion flow (ADAF) like emission mechanism.

Chandra observations of NGC4698: a Seyfert-2 with no absorption

Abstract:We present Chandra ACIS-S observations of the enigmatic Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC4698. This object together with several other bona-fide Seyfert-2 galaxies show no absorption in the low spatial resolution ASCA data, in contrast to the standard unification models. Our Chandra observations of NGC4698 probe directly the nucleus allowing us to check whether nearby sources contaminate the ASCA spectrum. Indeed, the Chandra observations show that the ASCA spectrum is dominated by two nearby AGN. The X-ray flux of NGC4698 is dominated by a nuclear source with luminosity L(0.3-8 keV) ~ 10^39, erg s-1 coincident with the radio nucleus. Its spectrum is well represented by a power-law, ~ 2.2, obscured by a small column density of 5x10^20 cm-2 suggesting that NGC4698 is an atypical Seyfert galaxy. On the basis of its low luminosity we then interpret NGC4698 as a Seyfert galaxy which lacks a broad-line region.

A Chandra X-ray Study of NGC 1068: II. The Luminous X-ray Source Population

Abstract:We present an analysis of the compact X-ray source population in the Seyfert~2 galaxy NGC 1068, imaged with Chandra. We find a total of 84 compact sources, of which 66 are projected onto the galactic disk of NGC 1068. Spectra of the brightest sources have been modeled with both multi-color disk blackbody and power-law models. The power-law model provides the better description of the spectrum for most of these sources. Five sources have 0.4-8 keV intrinsic luminosities greater than 10^{39} erg/s, assuming that their emission is isotropic and that they are associated with NGC 1068. We refer to these sources as Intermediate Luminosity X-ray Objects (IXOs). If these five sources are X-ray binaries accreting with luminosities that are both sub-Eddington and isotropic, then the implied source masses are >7 solar masses, and so they are inferred to be black holes. The brightest source has a much harder spectrum (Gamma = 0.9\pm0.1) than that found in Galactic black hole candidates and other IXOs. It also shows large-amplitude variability on both short-term and long-term timescales. The ratio of the number of sources with luminosities greater than 2.1 x 10^{38} erg/s in the 0.4-8 keV band to the rate of massive star formation is the same, to within a factor of two, for NGC 1068, the Antennae, NGC 5194 (the main galaxy in M51), and the Circinus galaxy. This suggests that the rate of production of X-ray binaries per massive star is approximately the same for galaxies with currently active star formation, including ``starbursts''.

NuSTAR Spectroscopy of Multi-Component X-ray Reflection from NGC 1068

Abstract:We report on high-energy X-ray observations of the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 with NuSTAR, which provide the best constraints to date on its >10 keV spectral shape. The NuSTAR data are consistent with those from past and current instruments to within cross-calibration uncertainties, and we find no strong continuum or line variability over the past two decades, which is in line with its X-ray classification as a reflection-dominated Compton-thick active galactic nucleus. The combined NuSTAR, Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Swift BAT spectral data set offers new insights into the complex secondary emission seen instead of the completely obscured transmitted nuclear continuum. The critical combination of the high signal-to-noise NuSTAR data and the decomposition of the nuclear and extranuclear emission with Chandra allow us to break several model degeneracies and greatly aid physical interpretation. When modeled as a monolithic (i.e., a single N-H) reflector, none of the common Compton reflection models are able to match the neutral fluorescence lines and broad spectral shape of the Compton reflection hump without requiring unrealistic physical parameters (e.g., large Fe overabundances, inconsistent viewing angles, or poor fits to the spatially resolved spectra). A multi-component reflector with three distinct column densities (e.g., with best-fit values of N-H of 1.4 x 10(23), 5.0 x 10(24), and 10(25) cm(-2)) provides a more reasonable fit to the spectral lines and Compton hump, with near-solar Fe abundances. In this model, the higher N-H component provides the bulk of the flux to the Compton hump, while the lower N-H component produces much of the line emission, effectively decoupling two key features of Compton reflection. We find that approximate to 30% of the neutral Fe K alpha line flux arises from >2 '' (approximate to 140 pc) and is clearly extended, implying that a significant fraction (and perhaps most) of the <10 keV reflected component arises from regions well outside a parsec-scale torus. These results likely have ramifications for the interpretation of Compton-thick spectra from observations with poorer signal-to-noise and/or more distant objects.

Abstract:We present an XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert-LINER galaxy NGC 7213. The RGS soft X-ray spectrum is well fitted with a power law plus soft X-ray collisionally ionised thermal plasma (kT = 0.18 +0.03/-0.01 keV). We confirm the presence of Fe I, XXV and XXVI K-alpha emission in the EPIC spectrum and set tighter constraints on their equivalent widths of 82 +10/-13, 24 +9/-11 and 24 +10/-13 eV respectively. We compare the observed properties together with the inferred mass accretion rate of NGC 7213, to those of other Seyfert and LINER galaxies. We find that NGC 7213 has intermediate X-ray spectral properties lying between those of the weak AGN found in the LINER M81 and higher luminosity Seyfert galaxies. There appears to be a continuous sequence of X-ray properties from the Galactic Centre through LINER galaxies to Seyferts, likely determined by the amount of material available for accretion in the central regions.

Mid Infrared Spectral Energy Distribution of NGC 1068 with 0.1 arcsec Spatial Resolution

Abstract:The central region of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 is imaged in the mid infrared (MIR) using the Mid-Infrared Test Observation System on the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope. The oversampling pixel scale associated with shift-and-add method shows 0.1 arcsec resolution images with a high dynamic range after deconvolution. Along with an extended structure at a position angle (P.A.) of -10 degrees with higher surface brightness, another structure extends wider with lower surface brightness at a P.A. of 20 degrees. The central peak elongates north-south with FWHM of 0.3 x 0.2 arcsec. Spectral energy distribution (SED) of the central peak is fitted to have the silicate absorption feature of tau_9.7um = 0.9 +/- 0.3. This is half of the absorption expected from the near-infrared (NIR) feature of carbonaceous dust. This suggests a temperature gradient of the absorbing dust along the line of sight. Another possibility, which is not distinguishable here, is the size distribution of dust different from our Galaxy. Intrinsic luminosity of emission from the central peak is 3 x 10^37 W. The SED shows a hint of the poly aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features. Although a high spatial resolution MIR spectrum is required, it suggests that the PAH carriers near the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are sheltered from the high-energy emission from the AGNs and the AGNs have nuclear starbursts. For the NIR disklike structures, no counterparts are detected in the MIR. The nature of the structures remains unclear.

Abstract:We have combined Hubble Space Telescope/Faint Object Spectrograph, ground-based, and Infrared Space Observatory spectra of the nucleus of NGC 4395, the least luminous and nearest known type 1 Seyfert galaxy. The spectra show emission lines from a wide range of ionization states and critical densities. We have generated multicomponent photoionization models of both the broad and narrow emission-line regions (BLR and NLR) to investigate the physical conditions in the emission-line gas and test the proposition that the source of ionization is the non-thermal continuum radiation emitted by the central source. We show that, with a minimum of free parameters, the model predictions match the observed emission-line ratios quite well. The elemental abundances appear to be subsolar, with even greater underabundance of nitrogen.From the size of the BLR predicted by the models, we estimate a central mass of a few x 10^5 solar masses, in reasonable agreement with estimates from the stellar kinematics. Finally, our results suggest that the covering factor of the emission-line gas is close to unity, and that the observed UV to X-ray continuum is absorbed by intervening NLR gas. We argue that high covering factor is responsible for the apparent flattening of the Baldwin relation in low luminosity AGN.
