Abstract:The method of iterated conformal maps is developed for quasi-static fracture of brittle materials, for all modes of fracture. Previous theory, that was relevant for mode III only, is extended here to mode I and II. The latter require solution of the bi-Laplace rather than the Laplace equation. For all cases we can consider quenched randomness in the brittle material itself, as well as randomness in the succession of fracture events. While mode III calls for the advance (in time) of one analytic function, mode I and II call for the advance of two analytic functions. This fundamental difference creates different stress distribution around the cracks. As a result the geometric characteristics of the cracks differ, putting mode III in a different class compared to modes I and II.

Abstract:We review various aspects of jet physics in the context of hadron colliders. We start by discussing the definitions and properties of jets and recent development in this area. We then consider the question of factorization for processes with jets, in particular for cases in which jets are produced in special configurations, like for example in the region of forward rapidities. We review numerous perturbative methods for calculating predictions for jet processes, including the fixed-order calculations as well as various matching and merging techniques. We also discuss the questions related to non-perturbative effects and the role they play in precision jet studies. We describe the status of calculations for processes with jet vetoes and we also elaborate on production of jets in forward direction. Throughout the article, we present selected comparisons between state-of-the-art theoretical predictions and the data from the LHC.

Abstract:Jets have been used to verify the theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), measure the structure of the proton and to search for the physics beyond the Standard Model. In this article, we review the current status of jet physics at the Tevatron, a sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar collider at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We report on recent measurements of the inclusive jet production cross section and the results of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model using jets. Dijet production measurements are also reported.

Abstract:A fundamental characteristic of hadron colliders is the abundant production of jets, which then are studied to learn about hard QCD, the proton structure, or nonperturbative effects. In the following the latest results and developments from the LHC experiments on jet cross sections, event shapes, flavour and rapidity dependence, and cross section ratios are presented. The ratio of the inclusive 3-jet to the inclusive 2-jet event cross section is used for a first determination of the strong coupling constant at the TeV scale.

Abstract:From dedicated QCD studies to new physics background estimation, jets will be everywhere at the LHC. In these proceedings, we discuss two important recent series of improvements. In the first one, we introduce new algorithms and new implementations of previously existing algorithms, in order to cure limitations of their predecessors and to satisfy fundamental requirements. In the second part, we show that it is of prime importance to carefully choose the jet definition (algorithm and parameters) to optimise kinematic reconstructions at the LHC. Noticeably, we show that while at scales around 100 GeV, R~0.5 is an appropriate choice, clustering at the TeV scale requires R~1 for optimal efficiency. We finally show that our results are valid in the presence of pileup, provided that a subtraction procedure is applied.

Abstract:For jets, with great power comes great opportunity. The unprecedented center of mass energies available at the LHC open new windows on the QGP: we demonstrate that jet shape and jet cross section measurements become feasible as a new, differential and accurate test of the underlying QCD theory. We present a first step in understanding these shapes and cross sections in heavy ion reactions. Our approach allows for detailed simulations of the experimental acceptance/cuts that help isolate jets in such high-multiplicity environment. It is demonstrated for the first time that the pattern of stimulated gluon emission can be correlated with a variable quenching of the jet rates and provide an approximately model-independent approach to determining the characteristics of the medium-induced bremsstrahlung spectrum. Surprisingly, in realistic simulations of parton propagation through the QGP we find a minimal increase in the mean jet radius even for large jet attenuation. Jet broadening is manifest in the tails of the energy distribution away from the jet axis and its quantification requires high statistics measurements that will be possible at the LHC.

Abstract:Recent QCD results from ATLAS taken at 7 TeV center-of-mass energy using the LHC are presented, including: dijet production, isolated photon production, isolated photon production associated with jets, jet shapes in top-quark pair events, the production cross-section of the phi(1020) meson, and underlying event in jet events. Good agreement with theory predictions is seen, in particular with those made by next-to-leading-order generators. These measurements highlight the importance of precision QCD measurements for improving state-of-the-art theoretical tools and searching for new physics.

Abstract:This article summarizes several analyses I discussed at Moriond and I attempt to maintain my speaking voice throughout. I extract several broad themes in the recent development of QCD,and emphasize how the latest results on jet physics reinforce these themes: that QCD is in a transitional stage from providing qualitative descriptions to providing true quantitative descriptions of the results. Certain figures presented in the talk are not reproduced here in the interest of space, but can be found directly in the transparencies available online, or in the references to the refereed journals.

Abstract:Selected quantum chromodynamics (QCD) measurements performed at the Fermilab Run II Tevatron ppbar collider running at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV by CDF and D0 Collaborations are presented. The inclusive jet, dijet production and three-jet cross section measurements are used to test perturbative QCD calculations, constrain parton distribution function (PDF) determinations, and extract a precise value of the strong coupling constant, alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.1161^{+0.0041}_{-0.0048}. Inclusive photon production cross-section measurements reveal an inability of next-to-leading-order (NLO) perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations to describe low-energy photons arising directly in the hard scatter. The diphoton production cross-sections check the validity of the NLO pQCD predictions, soft-gluon resummation methods implemented in theoretical calculations, and contributions from the parton-to-photon fragmentation diagrams. Events with W/Z+jets productions are used to measure many kinematic distributions allowing extensive tests and tunes of predictions from pQCD NLO and Monte-Carlo event generators. The charged-particle transverse momenta (pT) and multiplicity distributions in the inclusive minimum bias events are used to tune non-perturbative QCD models, including those describing the multiple parton interactions (MPI). Events with inclusive production of photon and 2 or 3 jets are used to study increasingly important MPI phenomenon at high pT, measure an effective interaction cross section, sigma_eff = 16.4+- 2.3 mb, and limit existing MPI models.

Abstract:Precise measurements and calculations of the internal structure of hadronic jets produced in high energy proton or lead collisions have become a prominent research area in recent years. Jet substructure provides information about quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and plays an important role in the study of the evolution of the quark-gluon plasma. The ALICE experiment is uniquely suited to provide insight into the smallest splitting angles due to high efficiency in the reconstruction of charged particles. In this proceeding, we present an overview of recent ALICE results on jet substructure in pp collisions involving measurements of generalized angularities of groomed and inclusive jets, a new double-differential measurement of the Lund jet radiation plane for jets with a transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}$) between 20 and 120 GeV/$c$, the first direct measurement of the dead-cone effect, and substructure measurements of heavy flavor tagged jets. These latest results provide new insights into the jet evolution by comparing to various theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Basic physics concepts of the QGSJET model are discussed, starting from the general picture of high energy hadronic interactions and addressing in some detail the treatment of multiple scattering processes, contributions of ``soft'' and ``semihard'' parton dynamics, implementation of non-linear interaction effects. The predictions of the new model version (QGSJET II.03) are compared to selected accelerator data. Future developments are outlined and the expected input from the LHC collider for constraining model predictions is discussed.

Abstract:The JETSCAPE Collaboration has recently announced the first release of the JETSCAPE package that provides a modular, flexible, and extensible Monte Carlo event generator. This innovative framework makes it possible to perform a comprehensive study of multi-stage high-energy jet evolution in the Quark-Gluon Plasma. In this work, we illustrate the performance of the event generator for different algorithmic approaches to jet energy loss, and reproduce the measurements of several jet and hadron observables as well as correlations between the hard and soft sector. We also carry out direct comparisons between different approaches to energy loss to study their sensitivity to those observables.

Abstract:With the explosion of data on jet based observables in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider and the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, perturbative QCD based simulations of these processes, often interacting with an expanding viscous fluid dynamical background, have taken center stage. This review is meant to bridge the gap between theory, simulation and phenomenology of jet modification in a dense medium. We will demonstrate how the existence of such end-to-end event generators with semi-realistic or even fully realistic final states allows for the most rigorous comparisons between pQCD based jet modification theory and experiment. State-of-the-art calculations of several jet based observables are presented. Extensions of this theory to jets in the small systems of $p$-$A$ and $e$-$A$ collisions is discussed.

Vector quarkonia at the LHC with JETHAD: A high-energy viewpoint

Abstract:In this review we discuss and extend the study of the inclusive production of vector quarkonia, $J/\psi$ and $\Upsilon$, emitted with large transverse momenta and rapidities at the LHC. We adopt the novel ZCW19$^+$ determination to depict the quarkonium production mechanism at the next-to-leading level of perturbative QCD. This approach is based on the nonrelativistic QCD formalism well adapted to describe the production of a quarkonium state from the collinear fragmentation of a gluon or a constituent heavy quark at the lowest energy scale. We rely upon the NLL/NLO$^+$ hybrid high-energy and collinear factorization for differential cross sections, where the standard collinear formalism is enhanced by the BFKL resummation of next-to-leading energy logarithms arising in the $t$-channel. We employ the JETHAD method to analyze the behavior of rapidity distributions for double inclusive vector-quarkonium and inclusive vector-quarkonium plus jet emissions. We discovered that the natural stability of the high-energy series, previously observed in observables sensitive to the emission of hadrons with heavy flavor detected in the rapidity acceptance of LHC barrel calorimeters, becomes even more manifest when these particles are tagged in forward regions covered by endcaps. Our findings brace the important message that vector quarkonia at the LHC via the hybrid factorization offer a unique chance to perform precision studies of high-energy QCD, as well as an intriguing opportunity to shed light on the quarkonium production puzzle.

Z (+jets) At The Tevatron

Abstract:We report on recent Z (+jets) measurements from the Fermilab Tevatron proton anti-proton collider. A new D0 measurement of the transverse momentum of Z bosons yields the best measurement to date of the non-perturbative form factor, g2. The production of Z+jets is an major background to many rare signals, and is a vital testing ground for theoretical predictions. Measurements from CDF and D0 of differential cross sections in Z+jet production test NLO pQCD, and in the case of D0, the latest tree-level matrix element with matched parton shower calculations. Improving modelling of this signal will impact results from the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN LHC.
