Abstract:We discuss the future evolution of the universe in the light of recent observations. The apparent luminosity vs. redshift of supernovae favor an accelerating universe. However an Einstein-de Sitter critical universe should not be ruled out yet.

Abstract:The possibility of an expanding decelerating Universe in the distant future is investigated in the context of a quintessence scalar field cosmology. Such a conceivable evolution is tested against SNe Ia and H(z) cosmic chronometers data, and also through a model independent method based on Gaussian processes. The scalar field model is an extension of the exponential Ratra-Peebles (RP) quintessential cosmology whose potential now depends on a pair of parameters ( α,λ ) and predicts a decelerated expansion in the future. Different from the RP approach the α parameter allows for a decelerating cosmology in the future thereby frustrating the inevitable evolution for a de Sitter cosmology as predicted by the cosmic concordance model ( ΛCDM ). The statistical model analysis is updated with the most recent SNe Ia and H(z) data thereby obtaining H0=68.6±3.7 km/s/Mpc , ΩΦ0=0.735−0.069+0.083 , α<6.56 and λ<0.879 (at 2σ c.l.). It is also found that the extended RP model allows for a future deceleration both for H(z) and SNe Ia data. Future Island Universes in an Accelerating Background Universe

Abstract:Recent data from cosmological supernova measurements show that our universe is in accelerating expansion. If such expansion lasts forever, one would have expected the universe to approach a state of cold death, where all points are pulled apart faster than light can travel. However, many local regions in the universe can still be protected by their own gravity and defy such a cosmic pull to form mini-universes, provided that their present local matter-density parameter Ωi,0 > 2.36. The Local Group is in one of them. These future self-bound regions, within which local physics remains the same as today, will eventually fall onto each other’s horizon and become island universes. Such mini-universes typically weigh less than 2 × 1014 solar masses, with the light ones having tight and compact configurations. PACS numbers: Typeset using REVTEX
Future of the universe in modified gravitational theories: Approaching to the finite-time future singularity

Abstract:We investigate the future evolution of the dark energy universe in modified gravities including $F(R)$ gravity, string-inspired scalar-Gauss-Bonnet and modified Gauss-Bonnet ones, and ideal fluid with the inhomogeneous equation of state (EoS). Modified Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) dynamics for all these theories may be presented in universal form by using the effective ideal fluid with an inhomogeneous EoS without specifying its explicit form. We construct several examples of the modified gravity which produces accelerating cosmologies ending at the finite-time future singularity of all four known types by applying the reconstruction program. Some scenarios to resolve the finite-time future singularity are presented. Among these scenarios, the most natural one is related with additional modification of the gravitational action in the early universe. In addition, late-time cosmology in the non-minimal Maxwell-Einstein theory is considered. We investigate the forms of the non-minimal gravitational coupling which generates the finite-time future singularities and the general conditions for this coupling in order that the finite-time future singularities cannot emerge. Furthermore, it is shown that the non-minimal gravitational coupling can remove the finite-time future singularities or make the singularity stronger (or weaker) in modified gravity.

Discovery of a supernova explosion at half the age of the Universe

Abstract:The ultimate fate of the Universe, infinite expansion or a big crunch, can be determined by using the redshifts and distances of very distant supernovae to monitor changes in the expansion rate. We can now find1 large numbers of these distant supernovae, and measure their redshifts and apparent brightnesses; moreover, recent studies of nearby type Ia supernovae have shown how to determine their intrinsic luminosities2,3,4—and therefore with their apparent brightnesses obtain their distances. The >50 distant supernovae discovered so far provide a record of changes in the expansion rate over the past several billion years5,6,7. However, it is necessary to extend this expansion history still farther away (hence further back in time) in order to begin to distinguish the causes of the expansion-rate changes—such as the slowing caused by the gravitational attraction of the Universe's mass density, and the possibly counteracting effect of the cosmological constant8. Here we report the most distant spectroscopically confirmed supernova. Spectra and photometry from the largest telescopes on the ground and in space show that this ancient supernova is strikingly similar to nearby, recent type Ia supernovae. When combined with previous measurements of nearer supernovae2,5, these new measurements suggest that we may live in a low-mass-density universe.

Abstract:The current observations are usually explained by an accelerating expansion of the present universe. However, with the present quality of the supernovae Ia data, the allowed parameter space is wide enough to accommodate the decelerating models as well. This is shown by considering a particular example of the dark energy equation-of-state $w_\phi\equiv p_\phi/\rho_\phi=-1/3$, which is equivalent to modifying the \emph{geometrical curvature} index $k$ of the standard cosmology by shifting it to $(k-\alpha)$ where $\alpha$ is a constant. The resulting decelerating model is consistent with the recent CMB observations made by WMAP, as well as, with the high redshift supernovae Ia data including SN 1997ff at $z= 1.755$. It is also consistent with the newly discovered supernovae SN 2002dc at $z=0.475$ and SN 2002dd at $z=0.95$ which have a general tendency to improve the fit.

Abstract:We formulate a model of spacetime with inhomogeneous matter distribution in multiple domains. In the context of the backreaction framework using Buchert's averaging procedure, we evaluate the effect of backreaction due to the inhomogeneities on the late time global evolution of the Universe. Examining the future evolution of this universe, we find that it can transit from the presently accelerating phase to undergo future deceleration. The future deceleration is governed by our model parameters. We constrain the model parameters using observational analysis of the Union 2.1 supernova Ia data employing the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method.

A cosmic accelerated scenario based on degrees of freedom of the spacetime

Abstract: Several recent investigations have shown that there is a holographic relationship between the bulk degrees of freedom and the surface degrees of freedom in the spacetime. Furthermore, the entropy on the horizon can produce an entropic force effect on the bulk degrees of freedom. In this paper, we explore the dynamic evolution law of the universe based on the idea of the entropic force and asymptotically holographic equipartition and further analyze the thermodynamic properties of the current model. We get the age of the universe, the relation between the luminosity distance and the redshift factor and the deceleration parameter which are consistent with astronomical observations. In addition, we can well explain the age of the universe and the mechanism of accelerated expansion without introducing dark energy for the evolution history of the universe up to now. We also show that the generalized second law of thermodynamics, the energy balance condition and the energy equipartition relation always hold. More importantly, the energy balance condition is indeed a holographic relation between the bulk degrees of freedom and the surface degrees of freedom of the spacetime. Finally, we analyze the energy conditions and show that the strong energy condition is always violated and the weak energy condition is satisfied when $t\leq2t_{0}$ in which $t$ is the time parameter and $t_{0}$ is the age of the universe.
The dark universe future and singularities: the account of thermal and quantum effects

Abstract:The knowledge of the universe future is of fundamental importance for any advanced civilization. We study the future of singular dark universe where thermal effects due to the Hawking radiation on the apparent horizon of the FRW universe are taken in consideration. It is shown that dark universe which ends up at finite-time Type I and Type III singularity or infinite-time Little Rip singularity transits to finite-time Type II singularity due to account of thermal effects. On the same time, the Type II and IV singular universe does not change its qualitative behavior. The combined account of quantum and thermal effects shows that depending on specific features of the universe only one of effects is dominant. When (conformal matter) quantum effects are dominant, the future singularity is usually removed while for dominant thermal effects the universe final state is the Type II singularity.

Abstract:We present photometric observations of an apparent Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) at a redshift of ~1.7, the farthest SN observed to date. The supernova, SN 1997ff, was discovered in a repeat observation by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of the Hubble Deep Field-North (HDF-N) and serendipitously monitored with NICMOS on HST throughout the Thompson et al. Guaranteed-Time Observer (GTO) campaign. The SN type can be determined from the host galaxy type: an evolved, red elliptical lacking enough recent star formation to provide a significant population of core-collapse supernovae. The classification is further supported by diagnostics available from the observed colors and temporal behavior of the SN, both of which match a typical SN Ia. The photometric record of the SN includes a dozen flux measurements in the I, J, and H bands spanning 35 days in the observed frame. The redshift derived from the SN photometry, z = 1.7 ± 0.1, is in excellent agreement with the redshift estimate of z = 1.65 ± 0.15 derived from the U300B450V606I814J110J125H160H165Ks photometry of the galaxy. Optical and near-infrared spectra of the host provide a very tentative spectroscopic redshift of 1.755. Fits to observations of the SN provide constraints for the redshift-distance relation of SNe Ia and a powerful test of the current accelerating universe hypothesis. The apparent SN brightness is consistent with that expected in the decelerating phase of the preferred cosmological model, ΩM ≈ 1/3,ΩΛ ≈ . It is inconsistent with gray dust or simple luminosity evolution, candidate astrophysical effects that could mimic previous evidence for an accelerating universe from SNe Ia at z ≈ 0.5. We consider several sources of potential systematic error, including gravitational lensing, supernova misclassification, sample selection bias, and luminosity calibration errors. Currently, none of these effects alone appears likely to challenge our conclusions. Additional SNe Ia at z > 1 will be required to test more exotic alternatives to the accelerating universe hypothesis and to probe the nature of dark energy.

Abstract:Inspired by the recent literature, we study the Einstein–de Sitter cosmological model coupled with a generalization of the relation between the redshift and time dilation of the kind . We find that this model fits the experimental data regarding 1048 supernovae, in a way which is competitive with the standard model and without the need of introducing a non-zero cosmological constant. Since the existence of dark energy, as a main ingredient of the composition of the cosmos, is still under debate, we propose our formalism as an example of an alternative description of the cosmological scenario.

Abstract:We study the impact of the expansion of the universe on a broad class of objects, including black holes, neutron stars, white dwarfs, and others. Using metrics that incorporate primordial inhomogeneities, the effects of a hypothetical "center of the universe" on inflation are calculated. Dynamic coordinates for black holes that account for expansions or contractions with arbitrary rates are provided. We consider the possibility that the universe may be bound to evolve into an ultimate state of "total dilution", wherein stable particles are so widely separated that physical communication among them will be impossible for eternity. This is also a scenario of "cosmic virtuality", as no wave-function collapse would occur again. We provide classical models evolving this way, based on the Majumdar-Papapetrou geometries. More realistic configurations, instead, indicate that gravitational forces locally counteract expansion, except in the universe's early stages. We comment on whether quantum phenomena may dictate that total dilution is indeed the cosmos' ultimate destiny.

Will the tachyonic Universe survive the Big Brake?

Abstract:We investigate a Friedmann universe filled with a tachyon scalar field, which behaves as dustlike matter in the past, while it is able to accelerate the expansion rate of the universe at late times. The comparison with type Ia supernovae (SNIa) data allows for evolutions driving the universe into a Big Brake. Some of the evolutions leading to a Big Brake exhibit a large variation of the equation of state parameter at low redshifts which is potentially observable with future data though hardly detectable with present SNIa data. The soft Big Brake singularity occurs at finite values of the scale factor, vanishing energy density and Hubble parameter, but diverging deceleration and infinite pressure. We show that the geodesics can be continued through the Big Brake and that our model universe will recollapse eventually in a Big Crunch. Although the time to the Big Brake strongly depends on the present values of the tachyonic field and of its time derivative, the time from the Big Brake to the Big Crunch represents a kind of invariant timescale for all field parameters allowed by SNIa.

Future singularity in an anisotropic universe

Abstract:We investigate future singularities originating from the anisotropy in the Universe. We formulate a new class of singularities in the homogeneous and anisotropic universe, comparing them with the known singularities in the homogeneous and isotropic universe. We also discuss the physical consequences of the new singularities. Moreover, we develop a novel reconstruction method for the anisotropic universe by introducing four scalar fields to reconstruct cosmological models in which future singularities appear. We present an explicit example where the anisotropy may grow in the future up to singularity.

Seeable universe and its accelerated expansion: an observational test

Abstract:From the equivalence principle, one gets the strength of the gravitational effect of a mass $M$ on the metric at position r from it. It is proportional to the dimensionless parameter $\beta^2 = 2GM/rc^2$, which normally is $<< 1$. Here $G$ is the gravitational constant, $M$ the mass of the gravitating body, $r$ the position of the metric from the gravitating body and $c$ the speed of light. The seeable universe is the sphere, with center at the observer, having a size such that it shall contain all light emitted within it. For this to occur one can impose that the gravitational effect on the velocity of light at $r$ is zero for the radial component, and non zero for the tangential one. Light is then trapped. The condition is given by the equality $R_g = 2GM/c^2$, where $R_g$ represents the radius of the {\it seeable} universe. It is the gravitational radius of the mass $M$. The result has been presented elsewhere as the condition for the universe to be treated as a black hole. According to present observations, for the case of our universe taken as flat ($k = 0$), and the equation of state as $p = - \rho c^2$, we prove here from the Einstein's cosmological equations that the universe is expanding in an accelerated way as $t^2$, a constant acceleration as has been observed. This implies that the gravitational radius of the universe (at the event horizon) expands as $t^2$. Taking $c$ as constant, observing the galaxies deep in space this means deep in time as $ct$, linear. Then, far away galaxies from the observer that we see today will disappear in time as they get out of the distance ct that is $< R_g$. The accelerated expanding vacuum will drag them out of sight. This may be a valid test for the present ideas in cosmology. Previous calculations are here halved by our results.

Abstract:We consider ever-expanding big bang models with a cosmological constant, Λ, and investigate in detail the evolution of the observable part of the universe. We also discuss quintessence models from the same point of view. A new concept, the Λ-sphere (or Q-sphere, in the case of quintessence) is introduced. This is the surface in our visible universe that bounds the region where dark energy dominates the expansion, and within which the universe is accelerating. We follow the evolution of this surface as the universe expands, and we also investigate the evolution of the particle and event horizons as well as the Hubble surface. We calculate the extent of the observable universe and the portion of it that can be seen at different epochs. Furthermore, we trace the changes in redshift, apparent magnitude and apparent size of distant sources through cosmic history. Our approach is different from, but complementary to, most other contemporary investigations, which concentrate on the past light cone at the present epoch. When presenting numerical results we use the FRW world model with Ωm0 = 0.30 and ΩΛ0 = 0.70 as our standard cosmological model. In this model the Λ-sphere is at a redshift of 0.67, and within a few Hubble times the event horizon will be stationary at a fixed proper distance of 5.1 Gpc (assuming h0 = 0.7). All cosmological sources with present redshift larger than 1.7 have by now crossed the event horizon and are therefore completely out of causal contact.
Evolution of Dark Energy–dark Matter-Coupled Expanding Universe

Abstract:The present universe is dominated by repulsive dark energy. It is natural that the coupling between the dark energy and the attractive gravity has to be taken into account in studying the evolution of our universe. Here, we induce an evolution equation for dark energy–dark matter-coupled universe. The solutions of the dynamic equation provide a specific picture of cosmic evolution, which is well compatible with current observed evolution histories of both Hubble parameter and equation of state parameter of dark energy. In this picture, the already observed universe has undergone through three epochs—the epoch of equilibrium between gravity and dark energy at cosmological redshifts $z>1$, the phase transition epoch at z between about 0.5 and 1, and the present acceleration epoch starting from $z\simeq 0.5$. The expected matter-dominated deceleration epoch has not been seen yet, which requires future deep observations to look back upon more early universe.

Abstract:It has been argued in the literature that if a universe is expanding with an accelerating rate indefinitely, it presents a challenge to string theories due to the existence of event horizons. We study the fate of a currently accelerating universe. We show that the universe will continue to accelerate indefinitely if the parameter $\omega = p/\rho$ of the equation of state is a constant, no matter how many different types of energy (matter, radiation, quintessence, cosmological constant and etc) are contained in the universe. This type of universe will always exhibit an event horizon indicating that such a universe may not be derived from string theories. We also comment on some related issues.
