Abstract:Let $\beta>0$ and consider an $n$-point process $\lambda_1, \lambda_2,..., \lambda_n$ from Hermite $\beta$ ensemble on the real line $\mathbb{R}$. Dumitriu and Edelman discovered a tri-diagonal matrix model and established the global Wigner semicircle law for normalized empirical measures. In this paper we prove that the average number of states in a small interval in the bulk converges in probability when the length of the interval is larger than $\sqrt {\log n}$, i.e., local semicircle law holds. And the number of positive states in $(0,\infty)$ is proved to fluctuate normally around its mean $n/2$ with variance like $\log n/\pi^2\beta$. The proofs rely largely on the way invented by Valk$\acute{o}$ and Vir$\acute{a}$g of counting states in any interval and the classical martingale argument.

Abstract:Abstract Cumulants are a notion that comes from the classical probability theory; they are an alternative to a notion of moments. We adapt the probabilistic concept of cumulants to the setup of a linear space equipped with two multiplication structures. We present an algebraic formula which involves those two multiplications as a sum of products of cumulants. In our approach, beside cumulants, we make use of standard combinatorial tools as forests and their colourings. We also show that the resulting statement can be understood as an analogue of Leonov–Shiryaev’s formula. This purely combinatorial presentation leads to some conclusions about structure constant of Jack characters.

Abstract:Algebraic statistics for binary random variables is concerned with highly structured algebraic varieties in the space of 2x2x...x2-tensors. We demonstrate the advantages of representing such varieties in the coordinate system of binary cumulants. Our primary focus lies on hidden subset models. Parametrizations and implicit equations in cumulants are derived for hyperdeterminants, for secant and tangential varieties of Segre varieties, and for certain context-specific independence models. Extending work of Rota and collaborators, we explore the polynomial inequalities satisfied by cumulants.

Functional relations for higher-order free cumulants

Abstract:We establish the functional relations between generating series of higher-order free cumulants and moments in higher-order free probability, solving an open problem posed fifteen years ago by Collins, Mingo, Śniady and Speicher. We propose an extension of free probability theory, which governs the all-order topological expansion in unitarily invariant matrix ensembles, with a corresponding notion of free cumulants and give as well their relation to moments via functional relations. Our approach is based on the study of a master transformation involving double monotone Hurwitz numbers via semi-infinite wedge techniques, building on the recent advances of the last-named author with Bychkov, Dunin-Barkowski and Kazarian. We illustrate our formulas by computing the first few decaying terms of the correlation functions of an ensemble of spiked GUE matrices, going beyond the law of large numbers and the central limit theorem.

Abstract:We define spreadability systems as a generalization of exchangeability systems in order to unify various notions of independence and cumulants known in noncommutative probability. In particular, our theory covers monotone independence and monotone cumulants which do not satisfy exchangeability. To this end we study generalized zeta and Möbius functions in the context of the incidence algebra of the semilattice of ordered set partitions and prove an appropriate variant of Faa di Bruno's theorem. With the aid of this machinery we show that our cumulants cover most of the previously known cumulants. Due to noncommutativity of independence the behaviour of these cumulants with respect to independent random variables is more complicated than in the exchangeable case and the appearance of Goldberg coefficients exhibits the role of the Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff series in this context. In a final section we exhibit an interpretation of the Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff series as a sum of cumulants in a particular spreadability system, thus providing a new derivation of the Goldberg coefficients.

Cumulants asymptotics for the zeros counting measure of real Gaussian processes

Abstract:We compute the exact asymptotics for the cumulants of linear statistics associated with the zeros counting measure of a large class of real Gaussian processes. Precisely, we show that if the underlying covariance function is regular and square integrable, the cumulants of order higher than two of these statistics asymptotically vanish. This result implies in particular that the number of zeros of such processes satisfies a central limit theorem. Our methods refines the recent approach by T. Letendre and M. Ancona and allows us to prove a stronger quantitative asymptotics, under weaker hypotheses on the underlying process. The proof exploits in particular the elegant interplay between the combinatorial structures of cumulants and factorial moments in order to simplify the determination of the asymptotics of nodal observables. The class of processes addressed by our main theorem englobes as motivating examples random Gaussian trigonometric polynomials, random orthogonal polynomials and the universal Gaussian process with sinc kernel on the real line, for which the asymptotics of higher moments of the number of zeros were so far only conjectured.

Abstract:Motivated by the $(q,\gamma)$-cumulants, introduced by Xu [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2303.13812" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.13812">arXiv:2303.13812</a>] to study $\beta$-deformed singular values of random matrices, we define the $(n,d)$-rectangular cumulants for polynomials of degree $d$ and prove several moment-cumulant formulas by elementary algebraic manipulations; the proof naturally leads to quantum analogues of the formulas. We further show that the $(n,d)$-rectangular cumulants linearize the $(n,d)$-rectangular convolution from Finite Free Probability and that they converge to the $q$-rectangular free cumulants from Free Probability in the regime where $d\to\infty$, $1+n/d\to q\in[1,\infty)$. As an application, we employ our formulas to study limits of symmetric empirical root distributions of sequences of polynomials with nonnegative roots. One of our results is akin to a theorem of Kabluchko [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2203.05533" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.05533">arXiv:2203.05533</a>] and shows that applying the operator $\exp(-\frac{s^2}{n}x^{-n}D_xx^{n+1}D_x)$, where $s>0$, asymptotically amounts to taking the rectangular free convolution with the rectangular Gaussian distribution of variance $qs^2/(q-1)$.

Abstract:We derive a formula for expressing free cumulants whose entries are products of random variables in terms of the lattice structure of non-crossing partitions. We show the usefulness of that result by giving direct and conceptually simple proofs for a lot of results about R-diagonal elements. Our investigations do not assume the trace property for the considered linear functionals.

Abstract:Cumulants represent a natural language for expressing macroscopic properties of a solid. We show that cumulants are subject to a nontrivial geometry. This geometry provides an intuitive understanding of a number of cumulant relations which had been obtained so far by using algebraic considerations. We give general expressions for their infinitesimal and finite transformations and represent a cumulant wave operator through an integration over a path in the Hilbert space. Cases are investigated where this integration can be done exactly. An expression of the ground-state wavefunction in terms of the cumulant wave operator is derived. In the second part of the article we derive the cumulant counterpart of Faddeev`s equations and show its connection to the method of increments.

Abstract:In this work we study conditional monotone cumulants and additive convolution in the shuffle-algebraic approach to non-commutative probability. We describe c-monotone cumulants as an infinitesimal character and identify the c-monotone additive convolution as an associative operation in the set of pairs of characters in the dual of a double tensor Hopf algebra. In this algebraic framework, we understand previous results on c-monotone cumulants and prove a combinatorial formula that relates c-free and c-monotone cumulants. We also identify the notion of $t$-Boolean cumulants in the shuffle-algebraic approach and introduce the corresponding notion of $t$-monotone cumulants as a particular case of c-monotone cumulants.

Finite Free Cumulants: Multiplicative Convolutions, Genus Expansion and Infinitesimal Distributions

Abstract:Given two polynomials $p(x), q(x)$ of degree $d$, we give a combinatorial formula for the finite free cumulants of $p(x)\boxtimes_d q(x)$. We show that this formula admits a topological expansion in terms of non-crossing multi-annular permutations on surfaces of different genera. This topological expansion, on the one hand, deepens the connection between the theories of finite free probability and free probability, and in particular proves that $\boxtimes_d$ converges to $\boxtimes$ as $d$ goes to infinity. On the other hand, borrowing tools from the theory of second order freeness, we use our expansion to study the infinitesimal distribution of certain families of polynomials which include Hermite and Laguerre, and draw some connections with the theory of infinitesimal distributions for real random matrices. Finally, building off our results we give a new short and conceptual proof of a recent result [Steinerberger (2020), Hoskins and Kabluchko (2020)] that connects root distributions of polynomial derivatives with free fractional convolution powers.

Abstract:We consider weak and strong Gaussian approximations for a two-color generalized Friedman's urn model with homogeneous and nonhomogeneous generating matrices. In particular, the functional central limit theorems and the laws of iterated logarithm are obtained. As an application, we obtain the asymptotic properties for the randomized-play-the-winner rule. Based on the Gaussian approximations, we also get some variance estimators for the urn model.

Abstract:We use here a recent idea of studying functions of free random variables using Boolean cumulants. We develop idea of explicit calculations of conditional expectation using Boolean cumulants. We demonstrate Boolean cumulants approach allows to calculate explicitly some conditional expectations of functions in free random variables. We present how Boolean cumulants together with subordination simplify proofs of some results which are known in research literature.

Abstract:The signature of a path can be described as its full non-commutative exponential. Following T. Lyons we regard its expectation, the expected signature, as path space analogue of the classical moment generating function. The logarithm thereof, taken in the tensor algebra, defines the signature cumulant. We establish a universal functional relation in a general semimartingale context. Our work exhibits the importance of Magnus expansions in the algorithmic problem of computing expected signature cumulants, and further offers a far-reaching generalization of recent results on characteristic exponents dubbed diamond and cumulant expansions; with motivation ranging from financial mathematics to statistical physics. From an affine process perspective, the functional relation may be interpreted as infinite-dimensional, non-commutative ("Hausdorff") variation of Riccati's equation. Many examples are given.

Abstract:A new family of polynomials, called cumulant polynomial sequence, and its extension to the multivariate case is introduced relied on a purely symbolic combinatorial method. The coefficients are cumulants, but depending on what is plugged in the indeterminates, moment se- quences can be recovered as well. The main tool is a formal generalization of random sums, when a not necessarily integer-valued multivariate random index is considered. Applications are given within parameter estimations, L\'evy processes and random matrices and, more generally, problems involving multivariate functions. The connection between exponential models and multivariable Sheffer polynomial sequences offers a different viewpoint in employing the method. Some open problems end the paper.

Abstract:In this paper we construct cumulants for stable random matrix models with single trace interactions of arbitrarily high even order. We obtain explicit and convergent expansions for the cumulants. We show that any cumulant is an analytic function inside a cardioid domain in the complex plane and we prove their Borel-LeRoy summability at the origin of the coupling constant. Our proof is uniform in the external variables.
