Abstract:In this mini-review I discuss three topics in meson spectroscopy. The production of heavy quarkonium states, S-wave scattering below 1 GeV, and exotic hybrid meson production. This is not intended to be a comprehensive review, just an overview of several topics of current interest.

Abstract:This special issue of the European Journal of Physics: Special Topics entitled Topics in Light Quark Physics collects 8 papers with the intention to discuss problems in physical processes involving the particles (mesons and baryons) comprising the lighter part in the spectrum of strong interactions, though some connections to the heavy-quark sector are also discussed. Active and timely problems in this broad field are introduced and covered by experts who root their contributions in the known aspects at the same time that take us to the frontier of knowledge, while introducing in many instances new techniques for present and future further developments. The nature of the lightest scalar resonances, the hunt for the lightest glueballs, the <span class="mathjax-tex">$\Lambda (1405)$</span> as a paradigmatic example of two-pole resonances, the pion–nucleon sigma term, two- and three-body scattering amplitudes extracted from lattice QCD, the QCD phase diagram, extrapolations in the number of colors of QCD and their use for addressing properties of its spectrum, and new advances to reach renormalized scattering amplitudes with attractive/repulsive singular potentials are all items covered here.

Abstract:I review some of the lattice results on spectroscopy and resonances in the past years. For the conventional hadron spectrum computations, focus has been put on the isospin breaking effects, QED effects, and simulations near the physical pion mass point. I then go through several single-channel scattering studies within Lüscher formalism, a method that has matured over the past few years. The topics cover light mesons and also the charmed mesons, with the latter case intimately related to the recently discovered exotic XYZ particles. Other possible related formalisms that are available on the market are also discussed.

Selected Highlights from the Study of Mesons

Abstract:We provide a brief review of recent progress in the study of mesons using QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations. Along the way we touch on aspects of confinement and dynamical chiral symmetry breaking but in the main focus upon: exact results for pseudoscalar mesons, including aspects of the η-η' problem; a realisation that the so-called vacuum condensates are actually an intrinsic, localised property of hadrons; an essentially nonperturbative procedure for constructing a symmetry-preserving Bethe-Salpeter kernel, which has enabled a demonstration that dressed-quarks possess momentum-dependent anomalous chromo-and electromagnetic moments that are large at infrared momenta, and a resolution of a longstanding problem in understanding the mass-splitting between the ρ-and a1-mesons such that they are now readily seen to be parity partners in the meson spectrum; features of electromagnetic form factors connected with charged and neutral pions; and a computation and explanation of valence-quark distribution functions in pseudoscalar mesons. We argue that in solving QCD, a constructive feedback between theory and extant and forthcoming experiments will enable constraints to be placed on the infrared behaviour of QCD's β-function, the nonperturbative quantity at the core of hadron physics.
Bond-Propagation Algorithm for Thermodynamic Functions in General 2D Ising Models

Abstract:Recently, we developed and implemented the bond propagation algorithm for calculating the partition function and correlation functions of random bond Ising models in two dimensions. The algorithm is the fastest available for calculating these quantities near the percolation threshold. In this paper, we show how to extend the bond propagation algorithm to directly calculate thermodynamic functions by applying the algorithm to derivatives of the partition function, and we derive explicit expressions for this transformation. We also discuss variations of the original bond propagation procedure within the larger context of Y-Delta-Y-reducibility and discuss the relation of this class of algorithm to other algorithms developed for Ising systems. We conclude with a discussion on the outlook for applying similar algorithms to other models.

Modern meson spectroscopy: the fundamental role of unitarity

Abstract:The importance of $S$-matrix unitarity in realistic meson spectroscopy is reviewed, both its historical development and more recent applications. First the effects of imposing $S$-matrix unitarity on meson resonances is demonstrated in both the elastic and the inelastic case. Then, the static quark model is revisited and its theoretical as well as phenomenological shortcomings are highlighted. A detailed account is presented of the mesons in the tables of the Particle Data Group that cannot be explained at all or only poorly in models describing mesons as pure quark-antiquark bound states. Next the earliest unitarised and coupled-channel models are revisited, followed by several examples of puzzling meson resonances and their understanding in a modern unitarised framework. Also, recent and fully unquenched lattice descriptions of such mesons are summarised. Finally, attention is paid to production processes, which require an unconventional yet related unitary approach. Proposals for further improvement are discussed.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the complete spectroscopy of the mesons, with a special focus on the consideration of the unquenched effects. To account for such effects, we employ the modified Godfrey–Isgur model and introduce a screening potential. The resulting mass spectrum of the concerned higher states is then presented, showing significant deviations after considering the unquenched effects. This emphasizes the importance of considering the unquenched effects when studying of the higher mesons. Furthermore, we determine the corresponding spatial wave functions of these mesons, which have practical applications in subsequent studies of their decays. These decays include two-body Okuba–Zweig–Iizuka allowed strong decays, dipion transitions between mesons, radiative decays, and some typical weak decays. With the ongoing high-luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider, we expect the discovery of additional states in the near future. The knowledge gained from the mass spectrum and the different decay modes will undoubtedly provide valuable insights for future experimental explorations of these higher mesons.

Abstract:In the past few years the field of hadron spectroscopy has seen renewed interest due to the pubblication, initially mostly from B-Factories, of evidences of states that do not match regular spectroscopy, but are rather candidates for bound states with additional quarks or gluons. A huge effort in understanding the nature of this new states and in building a new spectroscopy is ongoing. This report reviews the experimental and theoretical state of the art on heavy quarkonium exotic spectroscopy, with particular attention on the steps towards a global picture.

Towards the understanding of heavy quarks hadronization: from leptonic to heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:The formation of hadrons is a fundamental process in nature that can be investigated at particle colliders. As several recent findings demonstrate, with $\mathrm{e^+e^-}$ collisions as a "vacuum-like" reference at one extreme, and central nucleus--nucleus as a dense, extended-size system characterized by flow and local equilibrium at the opposite extreme, different collision systems offer a lever arm that can be exploited to probe with a range of heavy-flavour hadron species the onset of various hadronization processes. In this review, we present an overview of the theoretical and experimental developments. The focus is on open-heavy-flavour measurements. The comparison with model predictions and connections among the results in electron-positron, proton--proton, proton--nucleus, nucleus--nucleus collisions are discussed. After reviewing the current state, we suggest some prospects and future developments.

Abstract:Pseudoscalar mesons can be produced and studied in high-energy electron-nucleus scattering. We review and extend our previous theoretical analysis of meson production in the nuclear Coulomb field. The P→γγ decay rates are most directly determined for mesons produced in the double-Coulomb region where both photons are nearly real, and provided the hadronic-background contributions remain small. The larger the mass of the meson the higher the electron energy needed to assure such favorable conditions.

Abstract:Recent progress in heavy quarkonium production is reviewed in the framework of nonrelativistic QCD.Possible resolutions of the long standing problems of J/ψ and ψ ′ production cross sec- tions and polarizations at high p T observed at the Tevatron are investigated, and predictions are compared with the new measurements at the LHC.Puzzles in hadroproduction of P-wave charmonium states χ cJ are also discussed.In addition, charmonium production in e + e -annihilation at B factories and in photoproduction at HERA as well as in two-photon collisions are also reviewed.Special emphasis is put on the role of next-to-leading order corrections in NRQCD, which may essentially change the p T distributions at high p T for both yield and polarization in quarkonium hadroproduction.

Abstract:By splitting the real line into intervals of unit length a doubly infinite integral of the form $\Int F(q^x)\,dx,\; 0<q<1$, can clearly be expressed as $\Integ \Sum F(q^{x+n})\,dx$, provided $F$ satisfies the appropriate conditions. This simple idea is used to prove Ramanujan's integral analogues of his \ph{1}{1} sum and give a new proof of Askey and Roy's extention of it. Integral analogues of the well-poised \ph{2}{2} sum as well as the very-well-poised \ph{6}{6} sum are also found in a straightforward manner. An extension to a very-well-poised and balanced \ph{8}{8} series is also given. A direct proof of a recent q-beta integral of Ismail and Masson is given.

Abstract:Many of the XY Z resonances observed by the Belle, Babar, CLEO and BESIII collaborations in the past decade are difficult to interpret as conventional quark-antiquark mesons, motivating the consideration of scenarios such as multi-quark states, meson molecules, and hybrids. After a brief introduction to QCD sum-rule methods, we provide a brief but comprehensive review of the mass spectra of the quarkonium-like tetraquark states qQ (q) over bar(Q) over bar, doubly charmed/bottomed tetraquark states QQ (q) over bar(q) over bar and the heavy quarkonium hybrid states QGQ in the QCD sum rules approach. Possible interpretations of the XY Z resonances are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The past decades witnessed the golden era of hadron physics. Many excited open heavy flavor mesons and baryons have been observed since 2017. We shall provide an updated review of the recent experimental and theoretical progresses in this active field. Besides the conventional heavy hadrons, we shall also review the recently observed open heavy flavor tetraquark states $X(2900)$ and $T_{cc}^+(3875)$ as well as the hidden heavy flavor multiquark states $X(6900)$, $P_{cs}(4459)^0$, $Z_{cs}(3985)^-$, $Z_{cs}(4000)^+$, and $Z_{cs}(4220)^+$. We will also cover the recent progresses on the glueballs and light hybrid mesons, which are the direct manifestations of the non-Abelian $SU(3)$ gauge interaction of the Quantum Chromodynamics in the low-energy region.

Abstract:We report the findings of our extensive study of the spectra of flavored mesons in lattice gauge theories with symplectic gauge group and fermion matter content treated in the quenched approximation. For the Sp(4) , Sp(6) , and Sp(8) gauge groups, the (Dirac) fermions transform in either the fundamental, or the 2-index, antisymmetric or symmetric, representations. This study sets the stage for future precision calculations with dynamical fermions in the low-mass region of lattice parameter space. Our results have potential phenomenological applications ranging from composite Higgs models, to top (partial) compositeness, to dark matter models with composite, strong-coupling dynamical origin. Having adopted the Wilson flow as a scale-setting procedure, we apply Wilson chiral perturbation theory to extract the continuum and massless limits for the observables of interest. The resulting measurements are used to perform a simplified extrapolation to the large- N limit, hence drawing a preliminary connection with gauge theories with unitary groups.
