Abstract:Photoabsorption cross sections and gamma-decay strength function are calculated and compared with experimental data to test the existing models of dipole radiative strength functions (RSF) for the middle-weight and heavy atomic nuclei. Simplified version of the modified Lorentzian model are proposed. New tables of giant dipole resonance (GDR) parameters are given. It is shown that the phenomenological closed-form models with asymmetric shape can be used for overall estimates of the dipole RSF in the gamma -ray energy region up to about 20 MeV when GDR parameters are known or the GDR systematics can be adopted. Otherwise, the HFB-QRPA microscopic model and the semi-classical approach with moving surface appear to be more adequate methods to estimate the dipole photoabsorption RSF.

Abstract:The closed-form expressions for the photon strength functions (PSF) are tested using the gamma-decay data of OSLO group. The theoretical calculations are performed for the Lorentzian models of PSF for electric and magnetic dipole gamma-rays. The criteria of minimum of least-square value as well as the root-mean-square deviation factor are used. It is shown that a rather good agreement is obtained within the Simple Modified Lorentzian model for E1 PSF modelling.

Abstract:A systematics of excitation energy of the first 2(+) state E21+ in even-even heavy nuclei (A >= 120) is studied in the NpNn scheme. It is found that a simple exponential function describes the dependence of E21+ values on NpNn values very well. In addition, the Z = 64 shell gap is reexamined by investigating the systematics of the 52 <= Z <= 66 region. It is found that the Z = 64 shell gap is largest at N = 82 and becomes smaller with either increasing or decreasing of neutron numbers. The effects of this shell gap become negligible for counting the valence proton numbers when N >= 92 or N <= 72.

Abstract:We calculate the binding energies of Ni, Cu, Xe, Cs, Pt, Au, Np, Pu isotope chains using two interaction parameter sets NL-3 and NL-Z, and compared the relative errors of the even-even nuclei with those of odd-even nuclei and odd-odd nuclei. We find that the errors of binding energy of odd-even and odd-odd nuclei are not bigger than the one of even-even nuclei. The result shows that comparing with even-even nuclei, there is no systematic error and approximation in the calculations of the binding energy of odd-even and odd-odd nuclei with relativistic mean-field theory. In addition, the result is explained theoretically.

Abstract:Systematic calculations on the alpha-decay half-lives of heavy and superheavy nuclei are performed within a deformed version of the cluster model, using the modified two-potential approach. The deformed Woods-Saxon potential is employed to calculate the alpha-decay width through a deformed barrier. For comparison the calculated alpha-decay half-lives in the empirical relations are also presented. The present study is initially restricted to even-even nuclei in the heavymass region with N > 126. Then the study is extended to the recentlyobserved heaviest nuclei, including synthesized superheavy elements and isotopes. The alpha-decay half-lives obtained are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:We perform an extensive investigation on the α decay of heavy deformed even-even and odd- A nuclei within the multichannel cluster model. The dynamics effects of core nuclei are taken into account in dealing with the interaction matrix and the α -cluster formation. Enough decay channels are considered for convergence in solving the coupled equations. Systematic calculations have been performed for 36 even-even nuclei and 32 odd- A nuclei. The calculated results show good agreement with the available experimental data concerning total α -decay half-lives and branching ratios, including the branching ratios for high-spin states.

Abstract:Based on the traditional Three-Parameter formula for extracting energy gap Δ,an improved method has been obtained through fitting the data and eliminating the impact of the isospin effect on the binding energy.We find with our new calculations that the fewer the particle number,the greater the impact of isospin,and therefore,the greater the deviation caused in the traditional method.On the other hand,the results obtained by the present method,either for nuclei in the light mass or in heavy mass region,are much closer to the results of the empirical pairing formula.

Abstract:Using an effective potential that is based on the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock mean-field model, systematic alpha-decay properties of even-even heavy and superheavy nuclei have been investigated. Calculations do not raise any adjustable parameter. The obtained alpha-decay half-lives agree reasonably well with experimental data. The characteristics of the effective potential and the deformation effect on the alpha decay are discussed.

Abstract:The alpha-decay half-lives of even-even nuclei from Sm to Th are systematically studied based on the transfer matrix method. For the nuclear potential, a type of cosh-parametrized form is applied to calculate the penetration probability. Through a least-squares fit to experimental half-lives, we optimize the parameters in the potential and the a preformation factor P-0. During this process, P-0 is treated as a constant for each parent nucleus. Eventually, the calculated half-lives are found to agree well with the experimental data, which verifies the accuracy of the present approach. Furthermore, in recent studies, P-0 is regulated by the shell and paring effects plus the nuclear deformation. To this end, P-0 is here associated with the structural quantity, i.e., the microscopic correction of nuclear mass (E-mic). In this way, the agreement between theory and experiment is greatly improved by more than 20%, validating the appropriate treatment of P-0 in the scheme of E-mic.

Abstract:Benchmark comparisons between many-body methods are performed to assess the ingredients necessary for an accurate calculation of neutrinoless double beta decay matrix elements. Shell model and variational Monte Carlo (VMC) calculations are carried out for $A=10$ and $12$ nuclei. Different variational wavefunctions are used to evaluate the uncertainties in the {\it ab initio} calculations, finding fairly small differences between the VMC double beta decay matrix elements. For shell model calculations, the role of model space truncation, radial wavefunction choices, and short-range correlation are investigated and all found to be important. Based on the detailed comparisons between the VMC and shell model approaches, we conclude that accurate descriptions of neutrinoless double beta decay matrix elements require a proper treatment of both long-range and short-range correlations.

Abstract:Effects of differences between neutron and proton distributions on a decay are investigated for odd-mass nuclei within the generalized density-dependent cluster model. The neutron skin thickness is employed to gauge the differences and it is considered in numerically computing the double-folding a-nucleus potentials. In terms of the characteristic of odd-mass a emitters, special attention is paid to the a decays from ground or isomeric states which end in the ground states of daughter nuclei and furthermore belong to favored a decays. The calculations with the neutron skin thickness yield shorter half-lives, suggesting a smaller preformation factor. This is quite consistent with the conclusions for even-even a emitters. Moreover, a-decay calculations are extended for odd-mass isomers and superheavy nuclei. The calculated a-decay half-lives are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:We have performed a systematical investigation on the new or improved data of a decay in recent experiments, including neutron-deficient nuclei around the proton drip line and superheavy nuclei. By using the double-folding integral of the effective nucleon-nucleon interaction plus the density distributions of the alpha particle and the daughter nucleus, the deformed alpha-core potential is constructed. The alpha decay half-lives are then obtained within the modified two-potential approach. These obtained alpha decay half-lives are found to be in good agreement with the corresponding experimental data. This shows that the present model and formulas of alpha decay are valid for some new mass ranges.

Abstract:The competition between $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ and $\ensuremath{\beta}$ decays is investigated for neutron-deficient Pa, U, Np, and Pu isotopes. ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{+}$/electron-capture (EC) decay rates are calculated within the deformed quasiparticle random-phase approximation with realistic nucleon-nucleon $(NN)$ interactions. Contributions from allowed Gamow-Teller and Fermi transitions as well as first-forbidden transitions are considered. $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decay calculations are performed within the generalized density-dependent cluster model. Effects of differences between neutron and proton distributions and nuclear deformation are taken into account. In the calculations, Reid-93 $NN$ interactions are used for ${\ensuremath{\beta}}^{+}/\mathrm{EC}$ decays, while Michigan three-range Yukawa effective interactions, based on the $G$-matrix elements of Reid $NN$ potentials, are used for $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ decay. The calculated $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay half-lives show good agreement with the experimental data over a range of magnitude from ${10}^{2}$ to ${10}^{5}$ s. The resulting total half-lives including $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ and $\ensuremath{\beta}$ contributions are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data, together with the $\ensuremath{\alpha}/\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay branching ratios.

Abstract:During therapeutic treatment with heavier ions like carbon, the beam undergoes nuclear fragmentation and secondary light charged particles, in particular protons and alpha particles, are produced. To estimate the dose deposited into the tumors and the surrounding healthy tissues, the accuracy must be higher than ($\pm$3% and$\pm$1 mm). Therefore, measurements are performed to determine the double differential cross section for different reactions. In this paper, the analysis of data from 12C +12C reactions at 95 MeV/u are presented. The emitted particles are detected with \DeltaEthin-\DeltaEthick-E telescopes made of a stack of two silicon detectors and a CsI crystal. Two different methods are used to identify the particles. One is based on graphical cuts onto the \DeltaE-E maps, the second is based on the so-called KaliVeda method using a functional description of \DeltaE versus E. The results of the two methods will be presented in this paper as well as the comparison between both.

Abstract:The experimental data of newly observed a-decay chains, including new superheavy elements and medium-mass neutron-deficient isotopes, have been investigated by the generalized density-dependent cluster model. Instead of the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin barrier penetration probability, the exact solution of the Schrodinger equation with outgoing Coulomb wave boundary conditions is presented. The calculated alpha-decay half-lives are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. For superheavy nuclei, the calculated half-lives show that their stability against alpha-decay has a considerable increase with increasing neutron numbers. Predictions on alpha-decay half-lives are made for a new element 120, which may be useful for ongoing experiments.

Abstract:Besides the direct comparison with the experimental mass values, the alpha decay energy (Q alpha), as one type of the mass difference, can be considered as another factor to judge the accuracy and validity of modern nuclear mass models. In the present study, the Duflo-Zuker (DZ) mass model is employed to match the measured Q alpha value besides the mass data. This procedure can not only provide us a new way to evaluate and predict the alpha decay energy, but also raise one more constraint on the theoretical mass scheme. It is found that all the experimental alpha decay energies, from the ground state (g.s.) to g.s. transition of even-even nuclei above A = 100, can be well reproduced in a quite improved accuracy. Moreover, the symmetry term, involved in the macroscopic part of the DZ model, is refined further to regulate the behavior of the ambiguous symmetry energy coefficient in the nuclear equation of state. Through the relationship between the slope parameter of the symmetry energy and the neutron skin thickness, the neutron thickness ARnp of 208Pb is determined in the vicinity of 0.201 fm, which is compatible to the very recent measurement.

Abstract:The synthesis of superheavy elements is now a hot topic in nuclear physics. Alpha-decay and spontaneous fission are two main decay modes in heavy and superheavy regions. Theoretical studies on alpha radioactivity and spontaneous fission can provide useful information for experiments. We investigate the alpha-decay and spontaneous fission of heavy and superheavy nuclei with different models. This includes the alpha-decay energies, alpha decay half-lives, and half-lives of spontaneous fission. The theoretical alpha-decay half-lives are in good agreement with experimental ones. The calculated half-lives of spontaneous fission are in reasonable agreement with present data. The properties of unknown nuclei are predicted.

Abstract:Background: Recent high-precision measurements of alpha-induced reaction data below the Coulomb barrier have pointed out questions of the alpha-particle optical-model potential (OMP) which are yet open within various mass ranges. Purpose: The applicability of a previous optical potential and eventual uncertainties and/or systematic errors of the OMP assessment at low energies can be further considered on this basis. Method: Nuclear model parameters based on the analysis of recent independent data, particularly gamma-ray strength functions, have been involved within statistical model calculation of the (alpha,x) reaction cross sections. Results: The above-mentioned potential provides a consistent description of the recent alpha-induced reaction data with no empirical rescaling factors of the and/or nucleon widths. Conclusions: A suitable assessment of alpha-particle optical potential below the Coulomb barrier should involve the statistical-model parameters beyond this potential on the basis of a former analysis of independent data.

Abstract:Standard lattice fermion algorithms run into the well-known sign problem at real chemical potential. In this paper we investigate the possibility of using imaginary chemical potential, and argue that it has advantages over other methods, particularly for probing the physics at finite temperature as well as density. As a feasibility study, we present numerical results for the partition function of the two-dimensional Hubbard model with imaginary chemical potential. We also note that systems with a net imbalance of isospin may be simulated using a real chemical potential that couples to I_3 without suffering from the sign problem.
