Abstract:Allowed weak interaction rates for sd-shell nuclei in stellar environment are calculated using a generalized form of proton-neutron quasiparticle RPA model with separable Gamow-Teller forces. Twelve different weak rates are calculated for each nucleus as a function of temperature and density. This project consists of calculation of weak rates for a total of 709 nuclei with masses ranging from A = 18 to 100. This paper contains calculated weak rates for sd-shell nuclei. The calculated capture and decay rates take into consideration the latest experimental energy levels and ft value compilations. The results are also compared with earlier works. Particle emission processes from excited states, previously ignored, are taken into account, and are found to significantly affect some beta decay rates.

Abstract:The project aims to investigate most important weak interaction nuclei in the presupernova evolution of massive stars. To achieve the goal, an ensemble containing 728 nuclei in the mass range A = 1--100 was considered. We computed the mass fractions of these nuclei using Saha's equation for predetermined values of \textit{$T$}, \textit{$\rho$} and \textit{$Y_e$} and assuming nuclear statistical equilibrium. The nuclear partition functions were obtained using a newly introduced recipe where excited states, up to 10 $MeV$, were treated as discrete. The weak interaction rates (electron capture (\textit{ec}) and $\beta$-decay (\textit{bd})) were calculated in a \textit{totally} microscopic fashion using the proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (pn-QRPA) model and without assuming the Brink-Axel hypothesis. The calculated rates were coupled with the computed mass fractions to investigate the time rate of change of lepton to baryon fraction of the stellar matter. We compare our results with the previous calculations reported in the literature. Noticeable differences up to orders of magnitude are reported with previous calculations. These differences may influence the evolution of the star in the later stages of presupernova. We present a list of top 50 \textit{ec} and \textit{bd} nuclei which have the largest effect on $Y_e$ for conditions after silicon core burning. The competition between the \textit{ec} and \textit{bd} rates in stellar core was investigated and it was found that $Y_e$ = 0.424--0.455 is the interval where the \textit{bd} results are bigger than the \textit{ec} rates.

Abstract:We introduce a self-consistent microscopic theoretical framework for modeling the process of electron capture on nuclei in stellar environment, based on relativistic energy density functionals. The finite-temperature relativistic mean-field model is used to calculate the single-nucleon basis and the occupation factors in a target nucleus, and J(pi) = 0(+/-), 1(+/-), and 2(+/-) charge-exchange transitions are described by the self-consistent finite-temperature relativistic random-phase approximation. Cross sections and rates are calculated for electron capture on Fe-54,Fe-56 and Ge-76,Ge-78 in stellar environment, and results compared with predictions of similar and complementary model calculations.

Abstract:Weak interaction charged current transition strengths from highly excited nuclear states are fundamental ingredients for accurate modeling of compact object composition and dynamics, but are difficult to obtain either from experiment or theory. For lack of alternatives, calculations have often fallen back upon a generalized Brink-Axel hypothesis, that is, assuming the strength function (transition probability) is independent of the initial nuclear state but depends only upon the transition energy and the weak interaction properties of the parent nucleus ground state. Here we present numerical evidence for a modified `local' Brink-Axel hypothesis for Gamow-Teller transitions for $pf$-shell nuclei relevant to astrophysical applications. Specifically, while the original Brink-Axel hypothesis does not hold globally, strength functions from initial states nearby in energy are similar within statistical fluctuations. This agrees with previous work on strength function moments. Using this modified hypothesis, we can tackle strength functions at previously intractable initial energies, using semi-converged initial states at arbitrary excitation energy. Our work provides a well-founded method for computing accurate thermal weak transition rates for medium-mass nuclei at temperatures occurring in stellar cores near collapse. We finish by comparing to previous calculations of astrophysical rates.
Stellar $β^{\pm}$ decay rates of iron isotopes and its implications in astrophysics

Abstract:$\beta$-decay and positron decay are believed to play a consequential role during the late phases of stellar evolution of a massive star culminating in a supernova explosion. Recently the microscopic calculation of weak-interaction mediated rates on key isotopes of iron was introduced using the proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (pn-QRPA) theory with improved model parameters. Here I discuss in detail the improved calculation of $\beta^{\pm}$ decay rates for iron isotopes ($^{54,55,56}$Fe) in stellar environment. The pn-QRPA theory allows a microscopic "state-by-state" calculation of stellar rates as explained later in text. Excited state Gamow-Teller distributions are much different from ground state and a microscopic calculation of decay rates from these excited states greatly increases the reliability of the total decay rate calculation specially during the late stages of stellar evolution. The reported decay rates are also compared with earlier calculations. The positron decay rates are in reasonable agreement with the large-scale shell model calculation. The main finding of this work includes that the stellar $\beta$-decay rates of $^{54,55,56}$Fe are around 3 -- 5 orders of magnitude smaller than previously assumed and hence irrelevant for the determination of the evolution of $Y_{e}$ during the presupernova phase of massive stars. The current work discourages the inclusion of $^{55,56}$Fe in the list of key stellar $\beta$-decay nuclei as suggested by former simulation results.

Stellar weak-interaction rates for $rp$-process waiting-point nuclei from projected shell model

Abstract:We propose a projected shell model (PSM) for description of stellar weak-interaction rates between even-even and odd-odd nuclei with extended configuration space where up to six-quasiparticle (qp) configurations are included, and the stellar weak-interaction rates for eight $rp$-process waiting-point (WP) nuclei, $^{64}$Ge, $^{68}$Se, $^{72}$Kr, $^{76}$Sr, $^{80}$Zr, $^{84}$Mo, $^{88}$Ru and $^{92}$Pd, are calculated and analyzed for the first time within the model. Higher-order qp configurations are found to affect the underlying Gamow-Teller strength distributions and the corresponding stellar weak-interaction rates. Under $rp$-process environments with high temperatures and densities, on one hand, thermal population of excited states of parent nuclei tends to decrease the stellar $\beta^+$ decay rates. On the other hand, the possibility of electron capture (EC) tends to provide increasing contribution to the rates with temperature and density. The effective half-lives of WP nuclei under the $rp$-process peak condition are predicted to be reduced as compared with the terrestrial case, especially for $^{64}$Ge and $^{68}$Se.

Abstract:The dominant decay mode of atomic nuclei is beta decay (β-decay), a process that changes a neutron into a proton (and vice versa). This decay offers a window to physics beyond the standard model, and is at the heart of microphysical processes in stellar explosions and element synthesis in the Universe1–3. However, observed β-decay rates in nuclei have been found to be systematically smaller than for free neutrons: this 50-year-old puzzle about the apparent quenching of the fundamental coupling constant by a factor of about 0.75 (ref. 4) is without a first-principles theoretical explanation. Here, we demonstrate that this quenching arises to a large extent from the coupling of the weak force to two nucleons as well as from strong correlations in the nucleus. We present state-of-the-art computations of β-decays from light- and medium-mass nuclei to 100Sn by combining effective field theories of the strong and weak forces5 with powerful quantum many-body techniques6–8. Our results are consistent with experimental data and have implications for heavy element synthesis in neutron star mergers9–11 and predictions for the neutrino-less double-β-decay3, where an analogous quenching puzzle is a source of uncertainty in extracting the neutrino mass scale12.

Self-consistent microscopic calculations for electron captures on nuclei in core-collapse supernovae

Abstract:Calculations for electron capture rates on nuclei with atomic numbers between $Z=20$ and $Z=52$ are performed in a self-consistent finite-temperature covariant energy density functional theory within the relativistic quasiparticle random-phase approximation. Electron captures on these nuclei contribute most to reducing the electron fraction during the collapse phase of core-collapse supernovae. The rates include contributions from allowed (Gamow-Teller) and first-forbidden (FF) transitions, and it is shown that the latter become dominant at high stellar densities and temperatures. Temperature-dependent effects such as Pauli unblocking and transitions from thermally excited states are also included. The new rates are implemented in a spherically symmetric 1D simulation of the core-collapse phase. The results indicate that the increase in electron capture rates, due to inclusion of FF transitions, leads to reductions of the electron fraction at nuclear saturation density, the peak neutrino luminosity, and enclosed mass at core bounce. The new rates reaffirm that the most relevant nuclei for the deleptonization situate around the $N = 50$ and $82$ shell closures, but compared to previous simulations, nuclei are less proton rich. The new rates developed in this work are available, and will be of benefit to improve the accuracy of multi-dimensional supernova simulations.

Microscopic Description of Neutron Emission Rates in Compound Nuclei

Abstract:The neutron emission rates in thermal excited nuclei are conventionally described by statistical models with a phenomenological level density parameter that depends on excitation energies, deformations and mass regions. In the microscopic view of hot nuclei, the neutron emission rates can be determined by the external neutron gas densities without any free parameters. Therefore the microscopic description of thermal neutron emissions is desirable that can impact several understandings such as survival probabilities of superheavy compound nuclei and neutron emissivity in reactors. To describe the neutron emission rates microscopically, the external thermal neutron gases are self-consistently obtained based on the Finite-Temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (FT-HFB) approach. The results are compared with the statistical model to explore the connections between the FT-HFB approach and the statistical model. The Skyrme FT-HFB equation is solved by HFB-AX in deformed coordinate spaces. Based on the FT-HFB approach, the thermal properties and external neutron gas are properly described with the self-consistent gas substraction procedure. Then neutron emission rates can be obtained based on the densities of external neutron gases. The thermal statistical properties of $^{238}$U and $^{258}$U are studied in detail in terms of excitation energies. The thermal neutron emission rates in $^{238, 258}$U and superheavy compound nuclei $_{112}^{278}$Cn and $_{114}^{292}$Fl are calculated, which agree well with the statistical model by adopting an excitation-energy-dependent level density parameter. The coordinate-space FT-HFB approach can provide reliable microscopic descriptions of neutron emission rates in hot nuclei, as well as microscopic constraints on the excitation energy dependence of level density parameters for statistical models.
Charge-changing transitions and capture strengths of pf-shell nuclei with $T_{z} = -2$ at proton drip-line

Abstract:Charge-changing transitions, commonly referred to as Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions, and electron capture/$\beta^{+}$-decay strengths for pf-shell nuclei with $T_{z} = - 2$ at proton drip-line have been calculated using the proton-neutron quasi-particle random phase approximation (pn-QRPA) model. The total GT$_{+}$ strength values and electron capture/$\beta^{+}$-decay rates are needed for the study of the late stages of the stellar evolution. The pn-QRPA theory is used for a microscopic calculation of GT strength distribution functions and associated stellar electron capture/$\beta^{+}$-decay rates of proton-rich pf-shell nuclei with $T_{z} = - 2$ in the mass range 46 $\leq$ A $\leq$ 56 at proton drip-line. Standard quenching factor of 0.74, usually implemented in the shell model calculation, has been incorporated for the comparison with experimental data (wherever available). The calculated GT strength of the two proton-rich nuclei, $^{52}$Ni and $^{56}$Zn are compared with experimental data of corresponding mirror nuclei. It has been found that the pn-QRPA results are in good agreement with the experimental data as well as shell model result. It is noted that the total GT strength increases linearly with the increase of mass number. The electron capture/$\beta^{+}$-decay rates for proton-rich nuclei are calculated on a temperature and density scale relevant to presupernova evolution of massive stars. The $\beta^{+}$ decay half-lives are compared with measured and other theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Numerical values of charged-particle thermonuclear reaction rates for nuclei in the A=14 to 40 region are tabulated. The results are obtained using a method, based on Monte Carlo techniques, that has been described in the preceding paper of this series (Paper I). We present a low rate, median rate and high rate which correspond to the 0.16, 0.50 and 0.84 quantiles, respectively, of the cumulative reaction rate distribution. The meaning of these quantities is in general different from the commonly reported, but statistically meaningless expressions, "lower limit", "nominal value" and "upper limit" of the total reaction rate. In addition, we approximate the Monte Carlo probability density function of the total reaction rate by a lognormal distribution and tabulate the lognormal parameters {\mu} and {\sigma} at each temperature. We also provide a quantitative measure (Anderson-Darling test statistic) for the reliability of the lognormal approximation. The user can implement the approximate lognormal reaction rate probability density functions directly in a stellar model code for studies of stellar energy generation and nucleosynthesis. For each reaction, the Monte Carlo reaction rate probability density functions, together with their lognormal approximations, are displayed graphically for selected temperatures in order to provide a visual impression. Our new reaction rates are appropriate for bare nuclei in the laboratory. The nuclear physics input used to derive our reaction rates is presented in the subsequent paper of this series (Paper III). In the fourth paper of this series (Paper IV) we compare our new reaction rates to previous results.

Ab initio calculation of hyper-neutron matter

Abstract:The equation of state (EoS) of neutron matter plays a decisive role in our understanding of the properties of neutron stars as well as the generation of gravitational waves in neutron star mergers. At sufficient densities, it is known that the appearance of hyperons generally softens the EoS, thus leading to a reduction in the maximum mass of neutron stars well below the observed values of about 2 solar masses. Even though repulsive three-body forces are known to solve this so-called "hyperon puzzle", so far performing \textit{ab initio} calculations with a substantial number of hyperons has remained elusive. In this work, we address this challenge by employing simulations based on Nuclear Lattice Effective Field Theory with up to 232 neutrons (pure neutron matter) and up to 116 $\Lambda$ hyperons (hyper-neutron matter) in a finite volume. We introduce a novel auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo algorithm, allowing us to simulate for both pure neutron matter and hyper-neutron matter systems up to 5 times the density of nuclear matter using a single auxiliary field without any sign oscillations. Also, for the first time in {\em ab initio} calculations, we not only include $N\Lambda$ two-body and $NN\Lambda$ three-body forces, but also $\Lambda\Lambda$ and $N \Lambda\Lambda$ interactions. Consequently, we determine essential astrophysical quantities such as the mass-radius relation, the speed of sound and the tidal deformability of neutron stars. Our findings also confirm the existence of the $I$-Love-$Q$ relation, which gives access to the moment of inertia of the neutron star.

rp-Process weak-interaction mediated rates of waiting-point nuclei

Abstract:Electron capture and positron decay rates are calculated for neutron-deficient Kr and Sr waiting point nuclei in stellar matter. The calculation is performed within the framework of pn-QRPA model for rp-process conditions. Fine tuning of particle-particle, particle-hole interaction parameters and a proper choice of the deformation parameter resulted in an accurate reproduction of the measured half-lives. The same model parameters were used to calculate stellar rates. Inclusion of measured Gamow-Teller strength distributions finally led to a reliable calculation of weak rates that reproduced the measured half-lives well under limiting conditions. For the rp-process conditions, electron capture and positron decay rates on $^{72}$Kr and $^{76}$Sr are of comparable magnitude whereas electron capture rates on $^{78}$Sr and $^{74}$Kr are 1--2 orders of magnitude bigger than the corresponding positron decay rates. The pn-QRPA calculated electron capture rates on $^{74}$Kr are bigger than previously calculated. The present calculation strongly suggests that, under rp-process conditions, electron capture rates form an integral part of weak-interaction mediated rates and should not be neglected in nuclear reaction network calculations as done previously.

Abstract:Electron capture and beta-decay rates for nuclear pairs in sd-shell are evaluated at high densities and high temperatures relevant to the final evolution of electron-degenerate O-Ne-Mg cores of stars with the initial masses of 8-10 solar mass. Electron capture induces a rapid contraction of the electron-degenerate O-Ne-Mg core. The outcome of rapid contraction depends on the evolutionary changes in the central density and temperature, which are determined by the competing processes of contraction, cooling, and heating. The fate of the stars are determined by these competitions, whether they end up with electron-capture supernovae or Fe core-collapse supernovae. Since the competing processes are induced by electron capture and beta-decay, the accurate weak rates are crucially important. The rates are obtained for pairs with A=20, 23, 24, 25 and 27 by shell-model calculations in sd-shell with the USDB Hamiltonian. Effects of Coulomb corrections on the rates are evaluated. The rates for pairs with A=23 and 25 are important for nuclear URCA processes that determine the cooling rate of O-Ne-Mg core, while those for pairs with A=20 and 24 are important for the core-contraction and heat generation rates in the core. We provide these nuclear rates at stellar environments in tables with fine enough meshes at various densities and temperatures for the studies of astrophysical processes sensitive to the rates. In particular, the accurate rate tables are crucially important for the final fates of not only O-Ne-Mg cores but also a wider range of stars such as C-O cores of lower mass stars.

Abstract:We present a numerical and analytic study of the influence of the passive region on fluxon dynamics in a window junction. We examine the effect of the extension of the passive region and its electromagnetic characteristics, its surface inductance and capacitance. When the velocity in the passive region $v_{I}$ is equal to the Swihart velocity (1) a one dimensional model describes well the operation of the device. When $v_{I}$ is different from 1, the fluxon adapts its velocity to $v_{I}$. In both cases we give simple formulas for the position of the limiting voltage of the zero field steps. Large values of inductance and capacitance lead to different types of solutions which are analyzed.

Abstract:Proton-neutron quasi-particle random phase approximation (pn-QRPA) theory has recently being used for calculation of stellar weak interaction rates of $fp$-shell nuclide with success. Neutrino losses from proto-neutron stars play a pivotal role to decide if these stars would be crushed into black holes or explode as supernovae. The product of abundance and positron capture rates on $^{55}$Co is substantial and as such can play a role in fine tuning of input parameters of simulation codes specially in the presupernova evolution. Recently we introduced our calculation of capture rates on $^{55}$Co, in a luxurious model space of $7 \hbar \omega$, employing the pn-QRPA theory with a separable interaction. Simulators, however, may require these rates on a fine scale. Here we present for the first time an expanded calculation of the neutrino energy loss rates and positron capture rates on $^{55}$Co on an extensive temperature-density scale. These type of scale is appropriate for interpolation purposes and of greater utility for simulation codes. The pn-QRPA calculated neutrino energy loss rates are enhanced roughly up to two orders of magnitude compared with the large-scale shell model calculations and favor a lower entropy for the core of massive stars.

Abstract:We have successfully expressed and purified the human immunodeficiency virus type-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) using the baculovirus expression vector system. This expression system provides a eukaryotic environment in which post-translational modifications of foreign gene products can occur. After infection with recombinant virus, Western blot analysis confirmed the presence of an immunoreactive polypeptide of approximately 66 kDa from insect Sf9 cell lysates. RT was then purified from crude extracts of baculovirus-infected Sf9 cells; SDS-PAGE analysis of fractions obtain from partial purification showed that in contrast to the Escherichia coli-expressed RT, the baculovirus-expressed RT corresponded to a doublet of peptides at approximately 66 kDa. Further purification of the protein resulted in a p66 protein, judged to be more than 90% pure by SDS-PAGE and Coomassie blue stain. Following purification, the baculovirus derived RT had specific activity for DNA polymerase similar to that of the E. coli-derived RT. Therefore, RT purified from Sf9 cells appears to be suitable for structure-function studies of this enzyme.

Abstract:We present an X-ray spectral analysis of a sample of 8 bona-fide Seyfert 2 galaxies, selected on the basis of their high $[OIII]\lambda5007$ flux, from the Ho et al. (1997) spectroscopic sample of nearby galaxies. We find that, in general, the X-ray spectra of our Seyfert 2 galaxies are complex, with some our objects having spectra different from the 'typical' spectrum of X-ray selected Seyfert 2 galaxies. Two (NGC3147 and NGC4698) show no evidence for intrinsic absorption. We suggest this is due to the fact that when the torus suppresses the intrinsic medium and hard energy flux, underlying emission from the host galaxy, originating in circumnuclear starbursts, and scattering from warm absorbers contributes in these energy bands more significantly. Our asca data alone cannot discriminate whether low absorption objects are Compton-thick AGN with a strong scattered component or lack an obscuring torus. The most striking example of our low absorption Seyfert 2 is NGC4698. Its spectrum could be explained by either a dusty warm absorber or a lack of broad line clouds so that its appearance as a Seyfert 2 is intrinsic and not due to absorption.
