Abstract:Drought stress is a common environmental stress, which adversely affects the yield and quality of crops. Due to its excellent drought tolerance, wild barley from the Middle East region is considered a valuable source for barley improvement. Here, we compared the growth rate, stomatal regulation and capacity to metabolize reactive oxygen species (ROS) of two barley cultivars and one wild barley accession. The results indicated the wild barley EC_S1 showed a more significant decline in stomatal aperture and less ROS production. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that EC_S1 has slower transcriptional regulation (5,050 DEGs) in the early stage of drought stress (14 days) than Baudin (7,022 DEGs) and Tadmor (6,090 DEGs). In addition, 30 hub genes, including nine known drought-related genes were identified by WGCNA analysis. Then, we cloned a novel transcription factor, , from EC_S1. was subcellularly targeted to the nucleus. Overexpression of in enhanced drought tolerance due to increasing activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase activities as well as glutathione content. Silencing of in EC_S1 suppressed drought tolerance in BSMV:HvbZIP21-inoculated plants. Taken together, our findings suggest that play a critical role in drought tolerance by manipulating ROS scavenging.

Abstract:Plant-specific WOX family transcription factors play important roles ranging from embryogenesis to lateral organ development. The WOX1 transcription factors, which belong to the modern clade of the WOX family, are known to regulate outgrowth of the leaf blade specifically in the mediolateral axis; however, the role of WOX1 in compound leaf development remains unknown. Phylogenetic analysis of the whole WOX family in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) indicates that there are 10 members that represent the modern, intermediate, and ancient clades. Using phylogenetic analysis and a reverse genetic approach, in this study we identified SlLAM1 in the modern clade and examined its function and tissue-specific expression pattern. We found that knocking out SlLAM1 via CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing led to narrow leaves and a reduced number of secondary leaflets. Overexpression of tomato SlLAM1 could rescue the defects of the tobacco lam1 mutant. Anatomical and transcriptomic analyses demonstrated that floral organ development, fruit size, secondary leaflet initiation, and leaf complexity were altered due to loss-of-function of SlLAM1. These findings demonstrate that tomato SlLAM1 plays an important role in the regulation of secondary leaflet initiation, in addition to its conserved function in blade expansion.
CRISPR/Cas9 targeted mutagenesis of SlLBD40, a lateral organ boundaries domain transcription factor, enhances drought tolerance in tomato

Abstract:The LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARIES DOMAIN (LBD)-containing genes are plant-specific genes that play important roles in lateral organ development. In this study, we identified LBD40 (Solyc02g085910), which belongs to subfamily II of the LBD family of genes in tomato. LBD40 was highly expressed in roots and fruit. LBD40 expression was significantly induced by PEG and salt. Moreover, SlLBD40 expression was induced by methyl jasmonate treatment, while SlLBD40 expression could not be induced in the jasmonic acid-insensitive1 (jai1) mutant or MYC2-silenced plants, in which jasmonic acid (JA) signaling was disrupted. These findings demonstrate that SlLBD40 expression was dependent on JA signaling and that it might be downstream of SlMYC2, which is the master transcription factor in the JA signal transduction pathway. Overexpressing and CRISPR/Cas9 mediated knockout transgenic tomato plants were generated to explore SlLBD40 function. The drought tolerance test showed that two SlLBD40 knockout lines wilted slightly, while SlLBD40 overexpressing plants suffered severe wilting. The statistical water loss rate and midday leaf water potential also confirmed that knockout of SlLBD40 improved the water-holding ability of tomato under drought conditions. Taken together, our study demonstrates that SlLBD40, involved in JA signaling, was a negative regulator of drought tolerance and that knockout of SlLBD40 enhanced drought tolerance in tomato. This study also provides a novel function of SlLBD40, which belongs to subfamily II of LBD genes.

Abstract:WUSCHEL-related homeobox (WOX) transcription factors (TFs) are important in plant development processes and evolutionary novelties. In this study, a genome-wide comprehensive analysis of WOX genes from nine Rosaceae species was carried out, and their potential roles in Malus were subsequently investigated. 125 WOXs in 9 Rosaceae species were identified and classified into three clades, i.e., the ancient, intermediate, and modern clades. Prunus. domestica contained the most intra-genomic collinearity among the nine Rosaceae species. Additionally, the cis-elements in WOX gene family members were compared and classified into three categories, including phytohormone-responsive, plant growth and development, and abiotic and biotic stresses. Overexpression (OE) of MdWOX13-1 also increased the callus weight and enhanced ROS scavenging against drought stress. Furthermore, via yeast-one hybrid assay and LUC analyses, MdWOX13-1 could directly bind to the MdMnSOD promoter. Therefore, our results will facilitate further study of the WOX genes' function in the Rosaceae family.

Abstract:Drought severely limits crop growth and development, reducing productivity. WRKY transcription factors play crucial roles in regulating diverse aspects of plant growth, development, and responses to stress. Despite this, the functions of tomato WRKYs (SlWRKYs) in response to drought stress remain incompletely understood. Thus, we isolated SlWRKY52, a member of the group III SlWRKYs from the tomato variety 'Ailsa Craig', and investigated its role in drought stress responses. SlWRKY52 is an unstable hydrophilic protein chiefly located in the nucleus, which promoter region features cis -acting elements engaged in drought stress response. It was expressed in all tomato tissues and its expression was rapidly induced by drought stress. SlWRKY52 overexpression lines conferred enhanced drought stress resistance in tomato: its involved in abscisic acid (ABA) synthesis, resulted in rapid, ABA-dependent stomatal closure, reduced leaf water loss, lessened photosynthetic damage, higher antioxidant enzyme activity, decreased oxidative damage parameters, increased osmoregulatory substance content, accelerated reactive oxygen species scavenging, and increased expression of regulatory interaction, ABA biosynthesis, and abiotic stress response-related genes. Conversely, the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 nuclease mutant lines of SlWRKY52 reduced drought stress tolerance. In conclusion, our findings suggest that SlWRKY52 acts as a positive regulator of drought tolerance in tomato and has the potential to be used as a target gene for further molecular breeding.

Photosynthesis Response and Transcriptional Analysis: Dissecting the Role of SlHB8 in Regulating Drought Resistance in Tomato Plants

Abstract:Deciphering drought resistance in crops is crucial for enhancing water productivity. Previous studies have highlighted the significant role of the transcription factor SlHB8 in regulating developmental processes in tomato plants but its involvement in drought resistance remains unclear. Here, gene overexpression (SlHB8-OE) and gene knockout (slhb8) tomato plants were utilized to study the role of SlHB8 in regulating drought resistance. Our findings showed that slhb8 plants exhibited a robust resistant phenotype under drought stress conditions. The stomata of slhb8 tomato leaves displayed significant closure, effectively mitigating the adverse effects of drought stress on photosynthetic efficiency. The slhb8 plants exhibited a decrease in oxidative damage and a substantial increase in antioxidant enzyme activity. Moreover, slhb8 effectively alleviated the degree of photoinhibition and chloroplast damage caused by drought stress. SlHB8 regulates the expression of numerous genes related to photosynthesis (such as SlPSAN, SlPSAL, SlPSBP, and SlTIC62) and stress signal transduction (such as SlCIPK25, SlABA4, and SlJA2) in response to drought stress. Additionally, slhb8 plants exhibited enhanced water absorption capacity and upregulated expression of several aquaporin genes including SlPIP1;3, SlPIP2;6, SlTIP3;1, SlNIP1;2, and SlXIP1;1. Collectively, our findings suggest that SlHB8 plays a negative regulatory role in the drought resistance of tomato plants.

Abstract:The WRKY family of transcription factors plays important roles in plant growth, defense regulation, and the stress response. However, in tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum ), the WRKY mechanism of drought tolerance has not been described. In this study, we cloned the SlWRKY17 WRKY gene from tomato and induced its expression with PEG6000, NaCl, and abscisic acid (ABA). SlWRKY17 was located in the nucleus. The analysis of yeast transcriptional activity showed that SlWRKY17 may have transcriptional activation activity. Overexpressing SlWRKY17 in tobacco resulted in stronger drought tolerance. After the drought treatment, transgenic plants had higher superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase activities, as well as ascorbic acid (AsA) protein and relative water contents, but lower malondialdehyde content. In addition, several genes related to the ABA signaling pathway, proline biosynthesis, and the reactive oxygen species scavenging system were significantly upregulated in the transgenic lines. These results show that SlWRKY17 increases drought tolerance in tobacco. These results provide clues for the participation of SlWRKY17 in the regulation of abiotic stress tolerance.

Abstract:WRKY transcription factors are reported to be involved in defense regulation, stress response and plant growth and development. However, the precise role of WRKY transcription factors in abiotic stress tolerance is not completely understood, especially in crops. In this study, we identified and cloned 10 WRKY genes from genome of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). TaWRKY10, a gene induced by multiple stresses, was selected for further investigation. TaWRKY10 was upregulated by treatment with polyethylene glycol, NaCl, cold and H2O2. Result of Southern blot indicates that the wheat genome contains three copies of TaWRKY10. The TaWRKY10 protein is localized in the nucleus and functions as a transcriptional activator. Overexpression of TaWRKY10 in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) resulted in enhanced drought and salt stress tolerance, mainly demonstrated by the transgenic plants exhibiting of increased germination rate, root length, survival rate, and relative water content under these stress conditions. Further investigation showed that transgenic plants also retained higher proline and soluble sugar contents, and lower reactive oxygen species and malonaldehyde contents. Moreover, overexpression of the TaWRKY10 regulated the expression of a series of stress related genes. Taken together, our results indicate that TaWRKY10 functions as a positive factor under drought and salt stresses by regulating the osmotic balance, ROS scavenging and transcription of stress related genes.

Abstract:WRKY transcription factors play a key role in the tolerance of biotic and abiotic stresses across various crop species, but the function of some WRKY genes, particularly in tomato, remains unexplored. Here, we characterize the roles of a previously unstudied WRKY gene, SlWRKY8, in the resistance to pathogen infection and the tolerance to drought and salt stresses. Expression of SlWRKY8 was up-regulated upon Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (Pst. DC3000), abiotic stresses such as drought, salt and cold, as well as ABA and SA treatments. The SlWRKY8 protein was localized to the nucleus with no transcription activation in yeast, but it could activate W-box-dependent transcription in plants. The overexpression of SlWRKY8 in tomato conferred a greater resistance to the pathogen Pst. DC3000 and resulted in the increased transcription levels of two pathogen-related genes SlPR1a1 and SlPR7. Moreover, transgenic plants displayed the alleviated wilting or chlorosis phenotype under drought and salt stresses, with higher levels of stress-induced osmotic substances like proline and higher transcript levels of the stress-responsive genes SlAREB, SlDREB2A and SlRD29. Stomatal aperature was smaller under drought stress in transgenic plants, maintaining higher water content in leaves compared with wild-type plants. The oxidative pressure, indicated by the concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) and malondialdehyde (MDA), was also reduced in transgenic plants, where we also observed higher levels of antioxidant enzyme activities under stress. Overall, our results suggest that SlWRKY8 functions as a positive regulator in plant immunity against pathogen infection as well as in plant responses to drought and salt stresses.

Overexpression of SlWRKY6 enhances drought tolerance by strengthening antioxidant defense and stomatal closure via ABA signaling in Solanum lycopersicum L

Abstract:Drought is a major handicap for plant growth and development. WRKY proteins comprise one of the largest families of plant transcription factors, playing important roles in plant growth and stress tolerance. In tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), different WRKY transcription factors differentially (positively or negatively) regulate drought tolerance, however, the role of SlWRKY6 in drought response and the associated molecular mechanisms of stress tolerance remain unclear. Here we report that SlWRKY6, a member of the WRKYII-b group, is involved in the functional aspects of drought resistance in tomato. Transcriptional activation assays show that SlWRKY6 is transcriptionally active in yeast cells, while the subcellular localization assay indicates that SlWRKY6 is localized in the nucleus. Overexpression of SlWRKY6 in tomato plants resulted in stronger antioxidant capacity and drought resistance as manifested by increased photosynthetic capacity and decreased reactive oxygen species accumulation, malondialdehyde content and relative electrolyte leakage in transgenic tomato plants compared with wild-type under drought stress. Moreover, increased abscisic acid (ABA) content and transcript abundance of ABA synthesis and signaling genes (NCED1, NCED4, PYL4, AREB1 and SnRK2.6) in the transgenic tomato plants indicated potential involvement of the ABA pathway in SlWRKY6-induced drought resistance in tomato plants. Inspection of 2-kb sequences upstream of the predicted binding sites in the promoter of SlNCED1/4 identified two copies of the core W-box (TTGACC/T) sequence in the promoter of SlNCED1/4, which correlates well with the expression of these genes in response to drought, further suggesting the involvement of ABA-dependent pathway in SlWRKY6-induced drought resistance. The study unveils a critical role of SlWRKY6, which can be useful to further reveal the drought tolerance mechanism and breeding of drought-resistant tomato varieties for sustainable vegetable production in the era of climate change.

Genome-Wide Analyses of SlFWL Family Genes and Their Expression Profiles under Cold, Heat, Salt and Drought Stress in Tomato

Abstract:PLAC8 is a cysteine-rich protein that serves as a central mediator of tumor evolution in mammals. PLAC8 motif-containing proteins widely distribute in fungi, algae, higher plants and animals that have been described to be implicated in fruit size, cell number and the transport of heavy metals such as cadmium or zinc. In tomatoes, FW2.2 is a PLAC8 motif-containing gene that negatively controls fruit size by regulating cell division and expansion in the carpel ovary during fruit development. However, despite FW2.2, other FWL (FW2.2-Like) genes in tomatoes have not been investigated. In this study, we identified the 21 SlFWL genes, including FW2.2, examined their expression profiles under various abiotic adversity-related conditions. The SlFWL gene structures and motif compositions are conserved, indicating that tomato SlFWL genes may have similar roles. Cis-acting element analysis revealed that the SlFWL genes may participate in light and abiotic stress responses, and they also interacted with a variety of phytohormone-responsive proteins and plant development elements. Phylogenetic analyses were performed on five additional plant species, including Arabidopsis, pepper, soybean, rice and maize, these genes were classified into five subfamilies. Based on the results of collinearity analyses, the SlFWL genes have a tighter homologous evolutionary relationship with soybean, and these orthologous FWL gene pairs might have the common ancestor. Expression profiling of SlFWL genes show that they were all responsive to abiotic stresses, each subgroup of genes exhibited a different expression trend. Our findings provide a strong foundation for investigating the function and abiotic stress responses of the SlFWL family genes.

Abstract:Enhancing drought tolerance in crops and understanding the underlying mechanisms have been subject of intense research. The precise function and molecular mechanisms of B-box zinc finger proteins (BBX) remain elusive. Here, we report a natural allele of BBX18 (BBX18TT) that encodes a C-terminal truncated protein. While most wild tomato germplasms contain the BBX18CC allele and show more drought tolerant, modern cultivated tomatoes mostly carry BBX18TT allele and are more drought sensitive. Knockout of BBX18 leads to improved drought tolerance in transgenic plants of cultivated tomato. Ascorbate peroxidase 1 (APX1) is identified as a BBX18-interacting protein that acts as a positive regulator of drought resistance in tomato. Chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing analyses reveal that BBX18 binds to a unique cis-acting element of the APX1 promoter and represses its gene expression. This study provides insights into the molecular mechanism underlying drought resistance mediated by the BBX18-APX1 module in plants.

Abstract:Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is a widely cultivated crop with rich germplasm resources, holding significant nutritional value. It also serves as an important model for studying epidermal cell fate and sex determination. Cucumbers are covered with multicellular and unbranched trichomes, including a specific type called spines found on the surface of the fruit. The presence and density of these fruit spines determine the visual quality of cucumber fruits. However, the key regulatory genes and mechanisms underlying cucumber fruit spine development remain poorly understood. In this study, we identified a WUSCHEL-related homeobox (WOX) family gene CsWOX3, which functioned as a typical transcriptional repressor and played a negative role in fruit spine development. Spatial-temporal expression analysis revealed that CsWOX3 exhibited a relatively high expression level in the cucumber female floral organs, particularly in the fruit exocarp. Knockout of CsWOX3 using CRISPR/Cas9 resulted in a significant 2-to-3-fold increase in the diameter of fruit spines base, while overexpression led to a 17% decrease in the diameter compared to the wild-type. A SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE transcription factor CsSPL15 could directly bind and activate the expression of CsWOX3, thereby suppressing the expression of downstream auxin-related genes, such as CsARF18. Additionally, the RING-finger type E3 ubiquitin ligase CsMIEL1-like interacted with the HD domain of CsWOX3, which might result in the ubiquitination and subsequent alteration in protein stability of CsWOX3. Collectively, our study uncovered a WOX transcription factor CsWOX3 and elucidated its expression pattern and biological function. This discovery enhances our comprehension of the molecular mechanism governing cucumber fruit spine morphogenesis.
Genome-wide analysis of the CCT gene family and functional characterization of SlCCT6 in response to drought stress in tomato

Abstract:CCT transcription factors are important for photoperiod and abiotic stress regulation in Arabidopsis and rice. However, the CCT gene family has not been reported in tomato. Here, we systematically analyzed this. Thirty-one SlCCT genes were identified and divided into five groups (CMF, TIFY, PRR, S8, and COL), with members unevenly distributed across 12 chromosomes and the third chromosome exhibiting the most distribution. SlCCT was found to interact with an interacting protein (SlGI), transcription factor (MYB), and non-coding RNA (sly-miR156-5p) to jointly regulate the tomato stress response. cis-Acting element analysis of the SlCCT promoter region indicated large stress- and hormone-response elements in this family. Real-time PCR results indicated that SlPRR subfamily genes respond to various abiotic stresses and hormones. Tissue expression analysis revealed that several PRR subfamily genes are highly expressed in flowers, and subcellular localization analysis indicated an SlCCT6 nuclear location. Notably, SlCCT6 expression was significantly induced by drought, and its silencing reduced drought stress tolerance. Moreover, SlCCT6 overexpression enhanced tomato drought resistance by increasing antioxidant enzyme activity and activating stress-related genes, whereas SlCCT6 knockout decreased drought resistance. In conclusion, this provides valuable insights for future research on SlCCT functions.
Global Analysis of the WOX Transcription Factor Gene Family in Populus × xiaohei T. S. Hwang et Liang Reveals Their Stress−Responsive Patterns

Abstract:The WUSCHEL−related homeobox (WOX) family is a group of plant−specific transcription factors that play important regulatory roles in embryo formation, stem cell stability, and organogenesis. To date, there are few studies on the molecular mechanisms involved in this family of genes in response to stress. Thus, in this study, eight WOX genes were obtained from an endemic Chinese resilient tree species, Populus × xiaohei T. S. Hwang et Liang. Bioinformatic analysis showed that the WOX genes all contained a conserved structural domain consisting of 60 amino acids, with some differences in physicochemical properties. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that WOX members were divided into three evolutionary clades, with four, one, and three members in the ancient, intermediate, and modern evolutionary clades, respectively. The conserved structural domain species as well as the organization and gene structure of WOX genes within the same subfamily were highly uniform. Chromosomal distribution and genome synteny analyses revealed seven segmental−duplicated gene pairs among the PsnWOX gene family that were mainly under purifying selection conditions. Semi−quantitative interpretation (SQ−PCR) analysis showed that the WOX gene was differentially expressed in different tissues, and it was hypothesized that the functions performed by different members were diverse. The family members were strongly and differentially expressed under CdCl2, NaCl, NaHCO3, and PEG treatments, suggesting that WOX genes function in various aspects of abiotic stress defense responses. These results provide a theoretical basis for investigating the morphogenetic effects and abiotic stress responses of this gene family in woody plants.

Abstract:The WRKY transcription factors (TFs) play multifaceted roles in plant growth, development, and stress response. Previously, we found that SlWKRY81 negatively regulates tomato tolerance to drought; however, the mechanisms of stomatal regulation in response to drought remain largely unclear. Here, we showed that drought‐induced upregulation in the SlWKRY81 transcripts induced photoinhibition and reduced the net photosynthetic rate in tomato leaves. However, silencing SlWKRY81 alleviated those inhibitions and minimized the drought‐induced damage. A time‐course of water loss showed that SlWKRY81 silencing significantly and consistently reduced leaf water loss, suggesting a role for SlWKRY81 in stomatal movement. Further analysis using light microscopy revealed that SlWKRY81 silencing significantly decreased stomatal aperture and increased the ratio of length to width of stomata under drought. Both biochemical assay and confocal laser scanning microscopy demonstrated that drought‐induced upregulation in SlWKRY81 expression inhibited the nitric oxide (NO) accumulation in the guard cells, which was attributed to the simultaneous declines in the activity of NITRATE REDUCTASE (NR) and NR expression in tomato leaves. The inspection of 3‐kb sequences upstream of the predicted translational start site of the NR identified three copies of the core W‐box (TTGACC/T) sequence in the promoter region, indicating possible targets of SlWRKY81. Taken together, these data suggest that SlWRKY81 potentially represses NR transcription and thus reduces NO accumulation to attenuate stomatal closure and subsequent drought tolerance. These findings provide an improved understanding of the mechanisms of WRKY‐induced regulation of stomatal closure, which can be exploited in the future to enhance drought tolerance in crops.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors have crucial roles in plant stress responses. In this study, the bZIP family gene SlbZIP38 (GenBank accession No: XM004239373) was isolated from a tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Ailsa Craig) mature leaf cDNA library. The DNA sequence of SlbZIP38 encodes a protein of 484 amino acids, including a highly conserved bZIP DNA-binding domain in the C-terminal region. We found that SlbZIP38 was differentially expressed in various organs of the tomato plant and was downregulated by drought, salt stress, and abscisic acid (ABA). However, overexpression of SlbZIP38 significantly decreased drought and salt stress tolerance in tomatoes (Ailsa Craig). The findings that SlbZIP38 overexpression reduced the chlorophyll and free proline content in leaves but increased the malondialdehyde content may explain the reduced drought and salt tolerance observed in these lines. These results suggest that SlbZIP38 is a negative regulator of drought and salt resistance that acts by modulating ABA signaling.

Abstract:TomloxD is a lipoxygenase from Lycopersicon esculentum Mill, which has lipoxygenase activity. The expression of TomloxD can be stimulated by wounding, pathogen infection, jasmonate, and systemin. To investigate the function of TomloxD, transgenic tomato plants silencing tomloxD gene was produced. The suppression of TomloxD expression led to a marked reduction in the levels of lipoxygenase activity and endogenous jasmonic acid content, which suggested TomloxD can catalyze α-linolenic acids to produce (13S)-hydroperoxyoctadecatrienoic acid (13-HPOT), and the 13-HPOT is metabolized further to synthesize jasmonic acid. Real-time RT-PCR revealed that the expression of defense genes LeHSP90, LePR1 and LePR6 was also less in the transformants than in the wild-type tomato plant. Resistance assay showed that the suppression of TomloxD in transgenic tomato plants reduced thermotolerance of tomato and increased its susceptibility to Cladosporium fulvum. Collectively, the data presented here suggest that the TomloxD plays a role as a component of the octadecanoid defense-signaling pathway and involved in the generation of endogenous jasmonic acid, and in turn regulates the expression of plant defense genes and resistance to high temperature and pathogen attack.

Abstract:The C2H2-type (also called TFIIIA-type) zinc finger protein family is a major family of eukaryotic transcription factors. C2H2-type zinc finger proteins in plants play important roles in regulating various developmental processes or responses to abiotic stresses. We isolated a complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (cDNA) clone, designated Solanumlycopersicumcold zinc finger protein 1 (SlCZFP1), from tomato by analyzing the previous microarray data of the low-temperature transcriptome of tomato. SlCZFP1 encodes a novel TFIIIA-type zinc finger protein, which contains two typical zinc finger motifs, CX2–4 CX3FX3QALGGHX3–5H, and a potential nuclear localization signal (NLS). The SlCZFP1–GFP fusion protein was localized to the nucleus in a transient expression assay. Expression of SlCZFP1 was strongly induced by cold stress, dehydration, and salt treatment, but not by abscisic acid (ABA). Overexpression of SlCZFP1 in transgenic Arabidopsis and rice induced constitutive expression of cold-regulated (COR) or cold-responsive genes and conferred enhanced tolerance to freezing or cold treatments for non-acclimate transgenic plants, compared with wild-type plants. However, there was no obvious enhancement observed in drought and salt tolerance. Our data suggest that SlCZFP1 plays an important role in plant responses to cold stress by regulating cold-responsive gene expression and that SlCZEP1 might be a useful gene for improving cold tolerance in crop plants.
