Abstract:We prove that the operator Hilbert space OH does not embed completely isomorphically into the predual of a semi-finite von Neumann algebra. This complements Junge's recent result that it admits such an embedding in the non semi-finite case.

Abstract:We show that the operator Hilbert space OH introduced by Pisier embeds into the predual of the hyerfinite III1 factor. The main new tool is a Khintchine type inequality for the generators of the CAR algebra with respect to a quasi-free state. Our approach yields a Khintchine type inequality for the q-gaussian variables for all values q between -1 and 1. These results are closely related to recent results of Pisier and Shlyakhtenko in the free case.

Abstract:A multiple operator integral (MOI) is an indispensable tool in several branches of noncommutative analysis. However, there are substantial technical issues with the existing literature on the "separation of variables" approach to defining MOIs, especially when the underlying Hilbert spaces are not separable. In this paper, we provide a detailed development of this approach in a very general setting that resolves existing technical issues. Along the way, we characterize several kinds of "weak" operator valued integrals in terms of easily checkable conditions and prove a useful Minkowski-type integral inequality for maps with values in a semifinite von Neumann algebra.

Abstract:We show the failure of a matricial version of Grothendieck's theorem for operator spaces, thereby resolving a long-standing open question in the field. Moreover, by showing that such a counterexample can occur in the simplest context of commutative $C^*$-algebras, we address some other open questions in operator algebras. Our constructions, completely explicit and fairly simple, are inspired by some techniques in quantum information theory.

Abstract:This article, addressed to a general audience of functional analysts, is intended to be an illustration of a few basic principles from `noncommutative functional analysis', more specifically the new field of {\em operator spaces.} In our illustration we show how the classical characterization of (possibly non-surjective) isometries between function algebras generalizes to operator algebras. We give some variants of this characterization, and a new proof which has some advantages.

Abstract:Let H \mathcal {H} be a separable Hilbert space and let B ( H ) B(\mathcal {H}) be the ∗ * -algebra of all bounded linear operators on H \mathcal {H} . In the present paper, we prove that a positive/regular operator from L 1 ( 0 , 1 ) L_1(0,1) into an arbitrary separable operator ideal in B ( H ) B(\mathcal {H}) is necessarily Dunford–Pettis, extending and strengthening results due to Gretsky and Ostroy [Glasgow Math. J. 28 (1986), pp. 113–114], and Holub [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 104 (1988), pp. 89–95]. Consequently, for an arbitrary atomless von Neumann algebra M \mathcal {M} and an arbitrary KB-ideal C E C_E in B ( H ) B(\mathcal {H}) , the predual M ∗ \mathcal {M}_* of M \mathcal {M} is not isomorphic to any subspace of C E C_E . This observation complements several earlier results.

Abstract:A notion of super operator system is defined which generalizes the usual notion of operator systems to include certain unital involutive operator spaces which cannot be represented completely isometric as a concrete operator system on some Hilbert space. They can nevertheless be represented by bounded operators on a standard Z_2-graded Hilbert space equipped with a superinvolution. We apply this theory to investigate on the relation between certain tensor products defined for operator spaces and C^*-algebras, such as the projective tensor product, the Haagerup tensor product and the maximal C^*-tensor product.

Abstract:The classical Bohr inequality for scalars was extended to the non-commutative case of Hilbert space operators in the literature. The sole goal of this article is to discuss the operator Bohr inequality and present some of its new variants. This includes fresh reverses and refinements of this inequality with applications towards an operator's real and imaginary parts, not to forget the new discussion of different domains of the parameters. One further application towards the operator Dunkl-Williams inequality will be presented too. While the new results are interesting, we emphasize that the approach used to explore these inequalities differs from the existing literature methods for this context.

Abstract:AbstractLet ℳ be a semifinite von Neumann algebra with a faithful semifinite normal trace τ. Assume that E(0, ∞) is an M-embedded fully symmetric function space having order continuous norm and is not a superset of the set of all bounded vanishing functions on (0, ∞). In this paper, we prove that the corresponding operator space E(ℳ, τ) is also M-embedded. It extends earlier results by Werner [48, Proposition 4∙1] from the particular case of symmetric ideals of bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space to the case of symmetric spaces (consisting of possibly unbounded operators) on an arbitrary semifinite von Neumann algebra. Several applications are given, e.g., the derivation problem for noncommutative Lorentz spaces ℒp,1(ℳ, τ), 1 < p < ∞, has a positive answer.

Abstract:This is an introduction to the algebras $A\subset B(H)$ that the linear operators $T:H\to H$ can form, once a complex Hilbert space $H$ is given. Motivated by quantum mechanics, we are mainly interested in the von Neumann algebras, which are stable under taking adjoints, $T\to T^*$, and are weakly closed. When the algebra has a trace $tr:A\to\mathbb C$, we can think of it as being of the form $A=L^\infty(X)$, with $X$ being a quantum measured space. Of particular interest is the free case, where the center of the algebra reduces to the scalars, $Z(A)=\mathbb C$. Following von Neumann, Connes, Jones, Voiculescu and others, we discuss the basic properties of such algebras $A$, and how to do algebra, geometry, analysis and probability on the underlying quantum spaces $X$.

Abstract:We address the existence of non-trivial closed invariant subspaces of operators $T$ on Banach spaces whenever their square $T^2$ have or, more generally, whether there exists a polynomial $p$ with $\mbox{deg}(p)\geq 2$ such that the lattice of invariant subspaces of $p(T)$ is non-trivial. In the Hilbert space setting, the $T^2$-problem was posed by Halmos in the seventies and in 2007, Foias, Jung, Ko and Pearcy conjectured it could be equivalent to the \emph{Invariant Subspace Problem}.

Abstract:The article associates two fundamental lattice constructions with each regular unital real ordered Banach space (function system). These are used to establish certain results in the theory of operator algebras, specifically relating the injective envelope of a separable C*-algebra with its enveloping von Neumann algebra in a given faithful separable representation. The last section investigates on lattices of projections arising in injective C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras and certain nonlinear maps sending projections to projections which are essentially determined by their values on positive projections.

Abstract:In this article, we address a problem posed by F. Bayart regarding the existence of an infinite-dimensional closed vector subspace (excluding the null operator) within the set of supercyclic operators on Banach spaces. We resolve this problem by establishing the existence of the closed subspace. Furthermore, we prove that the set of supercyclic operators on $\ell_1$ contains, up to the null operator, an isometric copy of $\ell_1$.

Abstract:We use (versions of) the von Neumann inequality for Hilbert space contractions to prove several Schwarz-Pick inequalities. Specifically, we derive an alternate proof for a multi-point Schwarz-Pick inequality by Beardon and Minda, along with a generalized version for operators. Connections with model spaces and Peschl's invariant derivatives are established. Finally, Schwarz-Pick inequalities for analytic functions on polydisks and for higher order derivatives are discussed. An enhanced version of the Schwarz-Pick lemma, using the notion of distinguished variety, is obtained for the bidisk.
