Abstract:The second generation of large scale interferometric gravitational wave (GW) detectors will be limited by quantum noise over a wide frequency range in their detection band. Further sensitivity improvements for future upgrades or new detectors beyond the second generation motivate the development of measurement schemes to mitigate the impact of quantum noise in these instruments. Two strands of development are being pursued to reach this goal, focusing both on modifications of the well-established Michelson detector configuration and development of different detector topologies. In this paper, we present the design of the worldʼs first Sagnac speed meter (SSM) interferometer, which is currently being constructed at the University of Glasgow. With this proof-of-principle experiment we aim to demonstrate the theoretically predicted lower quantum noise in a Sagnac interferometer compared to an equivalent Michelson interferometer, to qualify SSM for further research towards an implementation in a future generation large scale GW detector, such as the planned Einstein telescope observatory.

Abstract:The speed meter concept has been identified as a technique that can potentially provide laser-interferometric measurements at a sensitivity level which surpasses the standard quantum limit (SQL) over a broad frequency range. As with other sub-SQL measurement techniques, losses play a central role in speed meter interferometers and they ultimately determine the quantum noise limited sensitivity that can be achieved. So far in the literature, the quantum noise limited sensitivity has only been derived for lossless or lossy cases using certain approximations (for instance that the arm cavity round trip loss is small compared to the arm cavity mirror transmission). In this article we present a generalized, analytical treatment of losses in speed meters that allows accurate calculation of the quantum noise limited sensitivity of Sagnac speed meters with arm cavities. In addition, our analysis allows us to take into account potential imperfections in the interferometer such as an asymmetric beam splitter or differences of the reflectivities of the two arm cavity input mirrors. Finally, we use the examples of the proof-of-concept Sagnac speed meter currently under construction in Glasgow and a potential implementation of a Sagnac speed meter in the Einstein Telescope to illustrate how our findings affect Sagnac speed meters with metre- and kilometre-long baselines.

Abstract:A method of enhancing the sensitivity of laser gravitational antennas based on tracking of the velocity of the antenna reflectors instead of conventional tracking of their displacement is considered. This method allows one to overcome the standard quantum detection limit for a weak force. An optical scheme of a gravitational wave detector on the basis of a speed meter is considered. The formulas for the limiting sensitivity of the given scheme taking optical losses into account are obtained. The possibility of realizing the considered measurement method in presently existing laser gravitational antennas is analyzed.

Abstract:Modern optomechanical systems employ increasingly sophisticated quantum-mechanical states of light to probe and manipulate mechanical motion. Squeezed states are now used routinely to enhance the sensitivity of gravitational-wave interferometers to small external forces, and they are also used in feedback-based trapping and damping experiments on the same interferometers to enhance the achievable cooling of the the phonon occupation number of the differential test mass mode (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2102.12665" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2102.12665">arXiv:2102.12665</a>). In this latter context, an accurate accounting of the true test mass motion, incorporating all sources of loss, the effect of feedback control, and the influence of classical force and sensing noises, is paramount. We work within the two-photon formalism to provide such an accounting, which extends a physically motivated decomposition of the quantum-mechanical noise of the light field (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2105.12052" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2105.12052">arXiv:2105.12052</a>). This decomposition provides insight, rooted in experimentally accessible parameters, into the optimal squeezed state that should be employed to achieve the lowest occupation number. We apply this formalism to current and possible future gravitational-wave interferometers, LIGO A+, LIGO Voyager, Cosmic Explorer (CE), and CE Voyager, finding that occupation numbers below 1 are possible over a frequency range comparable to the bandwidth of the trapped and cooled oscillator. We also discuss several technical issues in cooling experiments with gravitational-wave detectors.

Abstract:Current and future interferometeric gravitational-wave detectors are limited predominantly by shot noise at high frequencies. Shot noise is reduced by introducing arm cavities and signal recycling, however, there exists a tradeoff between the peak sensitivity and bandwidth. This comes from the accumulated phase of signal sidebands when propagating inside the arm cavities. One idea is to cancel such a phase by introducing an unstable optomechanical filter. The original design proposed in [Phys.~Rev.~Lett.~{\bf 115},~211104 (2015)] requires an additional optomechanical filter coupled externally to the main interferometer. Here we consider a simplified design that converts the signal-recycling cavity itself into the unstable filter by using one mirror as a high-frequency mechanical oscillator and introducing an additional pump laser. However, the enhancement in bandwidth of this new design is less than the original design given the same set of optical parameters. The peak sensitivity improvement factor depends on the arm length, the signal-recycling cavity length, and the final detector bandwidth. For a 4~km interferometer, if the final detector bandwidth is around 2~kHz, with a 20~m signal-recycling cavity, the shot noise can be reduced by 10 decibels, in addition to the improvement introduced by squeezed light injection. We also find that the thermal noise of the mechanical oscillator is enhanced at low frequencies relative to the vacuum noise, while having a flat spectrum at high frequencies.

Abstract:Abstract Position-meter and speed-meter interferometers have been analysed for detecting gravitational waves. Speed-meter is proposed to reduce the radiation pressure noise, which is dominant at low frequency. We introduce the concept of acceleration measurement in comparison with position and speed measurement. In this paper, we describe a general acceleration measurement and derive its standard quantum limit. We provide an example of an acceleration-meter interferometer configuration. We show that shot noise dominates at low frequency following a frequency dependence of 1/Ω 2 , while radiation pressure noise is constant. The acceleration-meter has even a stronger radiation pressure noise suppression than speed-meter.

Abstract:Optical interferometers with suspended mirrors are the archetype of all current audio-frequency gravitational-wave detectors. The radiation pressure interaction between the motion of the mirror and the circulating optical field in such interferometers represents a pristine form of light-matter coupling, largely due to 30 years of effort in developing high quality optical materials with low mechanical dissipation. However, in all current suspended interferometers, the radiation pressure interaction is too weak to be useful as a resource, and too strong to be neglected. Here, we demonstrate a meter-long interferometer with suspended mirrors, of effective mass $~ 125$ g, where the radiation pressure interaction is enhanced by strong optical pumping to realize a cooperativity of $50$. We probe this regime by observing optomechanically-induced transparency of a weak on-resonant probe. The low resonant frequency and high-Q of the mechanical oscillator allows us to demonstrate transparency windows barely $100$ mHz wide at room temperature. Together with a near-unity ($\sim 99.9\%$) out-coupling efficiency, our system saturates the theoretical delay-bandwidth product, rendering it an optical buffer capable of seconds-long storage times.

Abstract:An experimental set up was proposed to determine the speed of gravitational signals traveling in air or in some other medium. It involves two vibrating masses—the emitters, which will be the sources of periodic tidal gravitational signals—and one sapphire‐made mass that will act as a detector, positioned between the two emitters. The detector is planned to be suspended in vacuum and cooled down to 4.2 K, and its vibrational amplitude should be measured by a microwave signal (with ultra‐low phase‐noise) that is expected to resonate with the whispering gallery modes inside the detector. The mechanical and electrical quality factors of sapphire are quite high, yielding a very narrow detection band that reduces the detector sensitivity while amplifying the phase difference of the emitters' signals. The frequencies of the normal modes of the detector were previously determined using a finite element program. In this work, these frequencies are applied to the calculation of a first estimate of the sensitivity of the experiment.

Abstract:The measurement of minuscule forces and displacements with ever greater precision is inhibited by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which imposes a limit to the precision with which the position of an object can be measured continuously, known as the standard quantum limit1-4. When light is used as the probe, the standard quantum limit arises from the balance between the uncertainties of the photon radiation pressure applied to the object and of the photon number in the photoelectric detection. The only way to surpass the standard quantum limit is by introducing correlations between the position/momentum uncertainty of the object and the photon number/phase uncertainty of the light that it reflects5. Here we confirm experimentally the theoretical prediction5 that this type of quantum correlation is naturally produced in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). We characterize and compare noise spectra taken without squeezing and with squeezed vacuum states injected at varying quadrature angles. After subtracting classical noise, our measurements show that the quantum mechanical uncertainties in the phases of the 200-kilowatt laser beams and in the positions of the 40-kilogram mirrors of the Advanced LIGO detectors yield a joint quantum uncertainty that is a factor of 1.4 (3 decibels) below the standard quantum limit. We anticipate that the use of quantum correlations will improve not only the observation of gravitational waves, but also more broadly future quantum noise-limited measurements.
High-Frequency Gravitational-Wave Detection Using a Chiral Resonant Mechanical Element and a Short Unstable Optical Cavity

Abstract:Present gravitational wave detectors are based on the measurement of linear displacement in stable optical cavities. Here, we instead suggest the measurement of the twist of a chiral mechanical element induced by a gravitational wave. The induced twist rotates a flat optical mirror on top of this chiral element, leading to the deflection of an incident laser beam. This angle change is enhanced by multiple bounces of light between the rotating mirror and an originally parallel nearby fixed flat mirror. Based on detailed continuum-mechanics calculations, we present a feasible design for the chiral mechanical element including the rotating mirror. Our approach is most useful for signals in the frequency band 1 -- 100 kHz where we show that fundamental metrological limits would allow for smaller shot noise in this setup in comparison to the detection of linear displacement. We estimate a gravitational wave strain sensitivity between 10^{-21}/\sqrt{Hz} and 10^{-23}/\sqrt{Hz} at around 10 kHz frequency. When appropriately scaling the involved geometrical parameters, the strain sensitivity is proportional to frequency.

Optomechanics with squeezed light

Abstract:Optical interferometry now allows for extreme displacement sensitivity, often only limited by quantum noise: quantum shot noise (QSN) and/or quantum radiation pressure noise (QRPN), a macroscopic version of quantum back-action [1]. This ultimately leads to the standard quantum limit (SQL), the smallest displacement observable for a mechanical resonator using standard laser sources (coherent states) [2]. The SQL has long been predicted but has so far eluded experimental demonstration, due to radiation-pressure effects being extremely weak for macroscopic mechanical resonators. However, both Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo [3] should within a couple of years be limited by QRPN at the lower side of their science frequency band and by QSN at the higher side. Thus, the SQL should be reached by these large-scale gravitational-wave detectors in the next few years. The SQL is also of particular interest to the field of optomechanics, with applications to novel sensing devices such as atomic force microscopes (AFM) or accelerometers. Therefore, any sensitivity enhancement beyond the SQL will have important applications. The SQL can in-principle be overcome using squeezed light, a research topic that has also experienced considerable experimental progress. However, combining the optomechanical setups with squeezed light is still an experimental challenge. We plan to inject a squeezed bright beam into a dedicated table-top optomechanical system operated in a dilution fridge to investigate the SQL, and the methods to further increase the displacement sensitivity beyond the SQL. This requires frequencydependent squeezing, which we will obtain by injecting the squeezed beam into a rotation cavity [4]. High frequency gravitational wave detection with optically levitated nanoparticles: an update on LSD (levitated sensor detector)

Abstract:Kilometer-scale ground-based gravitational-wave interferometers have generated a new field of astronomy by viewing the universe in gravitational wave (GW) radiation, operating at a peak sensitivity of frequencies ranging from 10s of Hz to a few kHz.1 A great many discoveries have resulted from these detectors, such as the existence of binary black hole and neutron star systems.2 It is of great scientific value to extend the GW search to other frequencies, just as has been the case for the exploration of the EM spectrum. The levitated sensor detector (LSD) is a 1 m tabletop scale high frequency (< 10 kHz) gravitational wave detection experiment currently under construction at Northwestern University.3 It will serve as a 1 m prototype for future generations of levitated mass based instruments. The LSD sensitivity has more favorable frequency scaling at these frequencies compared to laser interferometer detectors such as LIGO and VIRGO due to different limiting noise factors, the LIGO free spectral range, and the fact that the LSD is a resonant sensor. The LSD is sensitive to GWs from binary coalescence of sub-solar-mass primordial black holes and as-yet unexplored new physics in the high-frequency GW window, such as the annihiation of gravitationally bound states of the QCD axion by black hole superradiance. Many promising experiments and techniques exist for probing the GW spectrum below the LIGO frequency band; they include pulsar timing arrays,4, 5 atomic clocks and other interferometers,6, 7 LISA,8, 9 and DECIGO.10 There are also a number of proposals, experiments and initial bounds set above the LIGO frequency band, largely over 100 MHz.11–18 Fewer established methods to systematically probe the kHz-MHz part of the GW spectrum, where a variety of interesting sources could exist. At Northwestern, we are constructing a compact Michelson interferometer configuration with Fabry-P´erot arms as shown in Figure 3, designed to work in the 10-100 kHz band. In the medium and long term, a multi index dielectric stack will be suspended at an anti-node of the standing wave inside each Fabry-P´erot arm. In the short term, this is likely to be a disc or disc like object (discussed in sections 2 and 2.2) — with which a degree of experimental success has already been had. A second laser is used to read out the position of the object as well as cool it along the cavity axes.19

Abstract:The Heisenberg uncertainty principle dictates that the position and momentum of an object cannot be simultaneously measured with arbitrary precision, giving rise to an apparent limitation known as the standard quantum limit (SQL). Gravitational-wave detectors use photons to continuously measure the positions of freely falling mirrors and so are affected by the SQL. We investigated the performance of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) after the experimental realization of frequency-dependent squeezing designed to surpass the SQL. For the LIGO Livingston detector, we found that the upgrade reduces quantum noise below the SQL by a maximum of three decibels between 35 and 75 hertz while achieving a broadband sensitivity improvement, increasing the overall detector sensitivity during astrophysical observations.

Abstract:Several km-scale gravitational-wave detectors have been constructed world wide. These instruments combine a number of advanced technologies to push the limits of precision length measurement. The core devices are laser interferometers of a new kind; developed from the classical Michelson topology these interferometers integrate additional optical elements, which significantly change the properties of the optical system. Much of the design and analysis of these laser interferometers can be performed using well-known classical optical techniques; however, the complex optical layouts provide a new challenge. In this review we give a textbook-style introduction to the optical science required for the understanding of modern gravitational wave detectors, as well as other high-precision laser interferometers. In addition, we provide a number of examples for a freely available interferometer simulation software and encourage the reader to use these examples to gain hands-on experience with the discussed optical methods.

Abstract:The baseline design for an Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (Advanced LIGO) is a dual-recycled Michelson interferometer with cavities in each of the Michelson interferometer arms. We describe one possible length-sensing and control scheme for such a dual-recycled, cavity-enhanced Michelson interferometer. We discuss the principles of this scheme and derive the first-order sensing signals. We also present a successful experimental verification of our length-sensing system using a prototype tabletop interferometer. Our results demonstrate the robustness of the scheme against deviations from the idealized design. We also identify potential weaknesses and discuss possible improvements. These results as well as other benchtop experiments that we present form the basis for a sensing and control scheme for Advanced LIGO.

Abstract:Long-baseline laser-interferometer gravitational-wave detectors are operating at a factor of 10 (in amplitude) above the standard quantum limit (SQL) within a broad frequency band. Such a low classical noise budget has already allowed the creation of a controlled 2.7 kg macroscopic oscillator with an effective eigenfrequency of 150 Hz and an occupation number of 200. This result, along with the prospect for further improvements, heralds the new possibility of experimentally probing macroscopic quantum mechanics (MQM) - quantum mechanical behavior of objects in the realm of everyday experience - using gravitational-wave detectors. In this paper, we provide the mathematical foundation for the first step of a MQM experiment: the preparation of a macroscopic test mass into a nearly minimum-Heisenberg-limited Gaussian quantum state, which is possible if the interferometer's classical noise beats the SQL in a broad frequency band. Our formalism, based on Wiener filtering, allows a straightforward conversion from the classical noise budget of a laser interferometer, in terms of noise spectra, into the strategy for quantum state preparation, and the quality of the prepared state. Using this formalism, we consider how Gaussian entanglement can be built among two macroscopic test masses, and the performance of the planned Advanced LIGO interferometers in quantum-state preparation.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics places noise limits and sensitivity restrictions on physical measurements. The balance between unwanted backaction and the precision of optical measurements impose a standard quantum limit (SQL) on interferometric systems. In order to realize a sensitivity below the SQL, it is necessary to leverage a back-action evading measurement technique, or else exploit cancellations of any excess noise contributions at the detector. %Many proof of principle experiments have been performed, but only recently has an experiment achieved sensitivity below the SQL. In this work, we extend that initial demonstration and realize sub-SQL measurement sensitivity nearly two times better than previous measurements, and with architecture applicable to interferometric gravitational wave detectors. In fact, this technique is directly applicable to Advanced LIGO, which could observe similar effects with a detuned signal recycling cavity. By exploiting quantum correlations created by an optical spring, we measure a total sensitivity below the SQL by $\textbf{2.8}$ dB, corresponding to a reduction in the noise power by $\textbf{72}\pm\textbf{5.1}$ \% below the quantum limit. Through the use of a detuned optical spring, this noise reduction is tunable, allowing us to choose the desired range of frequencies that fall below the SQL. This result demonstrates access to sensitivities well below the SQL at frequencies ranges applicable to LIGO, with the potential to extend the reach of gravitational wave detectors further into the universe.

Abstract:Direct observations of gravitational waves at frequencies below 10 Hz will play crucial roles for fully exploiting the potential of gravitational wave astronomy. One approach to pursue this direction is the utilization of laser interferometers equipped with the Fabry-Perot optical cavities in space. However, a number of challenges lie in this path practically. In particular, the implementation of precision control for the cavity lengths and the suppression of laser phase noises may prevent a practical detector design. To circumvent such difficulties, we propose a new interferometer topology, named the back-linked Fabry-Perot interferometer, where the precision length controls are not required and an offline subtraction scheme for laser phase noises is readily applicable. This article presents the principle idea and the associated sensitivity analyses. Despite additional noises, a strain sensitivity of $7\times 10^{-23}$ Hz$^{-1/2}$ may be attainable in the deci-Hertz band. Several technological developments and studies must be carried out to pave the way forward for the implementation.
