Abstract:The optical refractive index of a moving regular medium is calculated by using the Lorentz transformation in this note. It is shown that in some velocity region of medium moving relative to the initial frame K, the moving medium may possess a negative index of refraction measured by the observer fixed at the frame of reference K.

Abstract:In this work is elaborated the wording of Fermat`s principle for electromagnetic waves spreading in materials with negative index of refractions (MNR). The recent experiments with such material has confirmed their main characteristics, predicted earlier. It is shown that for MNR not applicable wording of Fermat`s principle through minimum (or extremum) of time of spreading the wave between two points. The correct wording for this case is a wording through extremum of total optical length for way between two points moreover optical length at passing of wave through MNR is taken negative. In paper are considered some properties of original flat lenses, executed from MNR.

Abstract:Snell's law reveals the propagation and refraction properties of the light when it passes through the interface composed by two media with different optical constants.It is the foundation of modern physical and geometrical optics.The effort to realize a perfect lens is trying to find the material with a negative refractive index,which has not yet been found in the natural material in past years.In this work,we have fabricated a series of noble-metal-based film samples(Au and Ag) with different incident angles.We quantitatively mea-sured the refraction of the light passing through the metal/air interface,and observed that the refraction can change from negative to positive in the visible range at the simplest natural metal/air interface.The mechanisms for causing the negative refraction have been carefully discussed and analyzed,and are not attributed to the effects,such as the plasmon resonance,the negative permeability,the Goos-Hnchen shift,and so on.We hope,therefore,the results given in this work will stimulate people to understand more of the physical origin of the negative refraction happened in the metal-based artificial materials,and will help its application in the photonics material and device design and fabrication in the future.
Negative refraction of Lamb modes: A theoretical study

Abstract:This paper provides a theoretical investigation of negative refraction and focusing of elastic guided waves in a free-standing plate with a step-like thickness change. Under certain conditions, a positive phase velocity (forward) Lamb mode can be converted into a negative phase velocity (backward) mode at such interface, giving rise to negative refraction. A semi-analytical model is developed in order to study the influence of various parameters such as the material Poisson's coefficient, the step-like thickness, the frequency and the incidence angle. To this end, all the Lamb and shear horizontal propagating modes, but also a large number of their inhomogeneous and evanescent counterpart,s are taken into account. The boundary conditions applied to the stress-displacement fields at the thickness step yields an equation system. Its inversion provides the transmission and reflection coefficients between each mode at the interface. The step-like thickness and Poisson's ratio are shown to be key parameters to optimize the negative refraction process. In terms of material, Duralumin is found to be optimal as it leads to a nearly perfect conversion between forward and backward modes over broad frequency and angular ranges. An excellent focusing ability is thus predicted for a flat lens made of two symmetric thickness steps. Theoretical results are confirmed by a numerical FDTD simulation and experimental measurements made on an optimized Duralumin flat lens by means of laser interferometry. This theoretical study paves the way towards the optimization of elastic devices based on negative refraction, in particular for cloaking or super-focusing purposes.

Abstract:Negative-index refraction is achieved in a lamellar composite with epsilon-negative (ENG) and mu-negative (MNG) materials stacked alternatively. Based on the effective medium approximation, simultaneously negative effective permittivity and permeability of such a lamellar composite are obtained theoretically and further proven by full-wave simulations. Consequently, the famous left-handed metamaterial comprising split ring resonators and wires is interpreted as an analogy of such an ENG-MNG lamellar composite. In addition, beyond the effective medium approximation, the propagating field squeezed near the ENG/MNG interface is demonstrated to be left-handed surface waves with backward phase velocity.
Refraction at Media with Negative Refractive Index

Abstract:We show that an electromagnetic (EM) wave undergoes negative refraction at the interface between a positive and negative refractive index material. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations are used to study the time evolution of an EM wave as it hits the interface. The wave is trapped temporarily at the interface and after a long time, the wave front moves eventually in the negative direction. This explains why causality and speed of light are not violated in spite of the negative refraction always present in a negative index material.

Abstract:We discuss linear and nonlinear optical wave propagation in a left-handed medium (LHM) or medium of negative refraction (NRM). We use the approach of characterizing the medium response totally by a generalized electric polarization [with a dielectric permittivity epsilon(omega,k)] that can be decomposed into curl and noncurl parts. The description has a one-to-one correspondence with the usual approach characterizing the LHM response with a dielectric permittivity epsilon<0 and a magnetic permeability mu<0. The latter approach is less physically transparent in the optical frequency region because the usual definition of magnetization loses its physical meaning. Linear wave propagation in a LHM or NRM is characterized by negative refraction and negative group velocity that could be clearly manifested by ultrashort pulse propagation in such a medium. Nonlinear optical effects in a LHM can be predicted from the same calculations adopted for ordinary media using our general approach.

Abstract:We study the problem of constructing an optical surface separating two homogeneous, isotropic media, one of which has a negative refractive index. In doing so, we develop a vector form of Snell's law, which is used to study surfaces possessing a certain uniform refraction property, both in the near and far field cases. In the near field problem, unlike the case when both materials have positive refractive index, we show that the resulting surfaces can be neither convex nor concave.

Abstract:Negative refraction in multilayered metal-dielectric metamaterials is usually based on negative refractive indices or hyperbolic-like isofrequency surfaces. In this study, we reveal that ellipse-like isofrequency surfaces can also lead to negative refraction. This phenomenon is theoretically demonstrated by analyzing the group velocities of refracted beams based on the exact transfer-matrix method and verified by numerical simulation based on the finite-element method. The corresponding physics mechanism is investigated through the energy flow of the ellipse-like modes in the metallic and dielectric layers. The results are also compared with the case of energy flow of hyperbolic-like modes. Moreover, negative double refraction is realized because negatively refracted beams can be enabled by ellipse-like and hyperbolic-like isofrequency surfaces simultaneously.

Abstract:This is a comment inspired by recently published results [Y. Zhang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 157404 (2003)] that introduced the name "amphoteric refraction" for the fact that at the interface with an optically anisotropic material there can be a range of incidence angles for which the component of the Poynting vector parallel to the interface changes sign upon refraction. The latter effect is a well-known consequence of optical anisotropy, but it was described as a new negative refraction phenomenon that can be put in the same class as the negative refraction observed at an interface with a left-handed material with negative refractive index.

Abstract:In 1968, Veselago [1] predicted that there could still be propagating waves in a medium that had simultaneously negative permittivity ε and permeability μ, because the product of ε and μ would be positive. However, to ensure energy conservation, he concluded that the refractive index must use the negative square root of the product of ε and μ (i.e., n = εμ). A consequence is certain unusual optical features in negative-index media. The electric field vector E, magnetic field vector H and wave vector k are a left-handed triplet, the basis for calling materials with simultaneously negative ε and μ “left-handed materials” (LHMs). LHMs would have novel optical properties. Light at non-normal incidence would bend to the side opposite that in a normal RHM; positive lenses would become negative; a flat slab could focus. The phase velocity of an electromagnetic wave would be opposite to the direction of energy flux, resulting in a reversed Doppler effect. Photons would have negative momentum and apply tension to the interface upon reflection. Recently, this kind of material has been demonstrated experimentally to exist. Shelby et al. [2] measured the scattering angle of the transmitted beam through a prism manufactured from a composite material consisting of a two-dimensional array of copper wires and split ring resonators and showed that the effective refractive index of the material is negative at microwave frequencies. Recent theoretical studies also showed that some photonic crystals might have negative-refraction properties in the near infrared spectral region [3].

Abstract:It has been recently proved that a slab of negative refractive index material acts as a perfect lens in that it makes accessible the sub-wavelength image information contained in the evanescent modes of a source. Here we elaborate on perfect lens solutions to spherical shells of negative refractive material where magnification of the near-field images becomes possible. The negative refractive materials then need to be spatially dispersive with $\epsilon(r) \sim 1/r$ and $\mu(r)\sim 1/r$. We concentrate on lens-like solutions for the extreme near-field limit. Then the conditions for the TM and TE polarized modes become independent of $\mu$ and $\epsilon$ respectively.

Abstract:Refraction at a smooth interface is accompanied by momentum transfer normal to the interface. We show that corrugating an initially smooth, totally reflecting, non-metallic interface provides a momentum kick parallel to the surface, which can be used to refract light negatively or positively. This new mechanism of negative refraction is demonstrated by visible light and microwave experiments on grisms (grating-prisms). Single-beam all-angle-negative-refraction is achieved by incorporating a surface grating on a flat multilayered material. This negative refraction mechanism is used to create a new optical device, a grating lens. A plano-concave grating lens is demonstrated to focus plane microwaves to a point image. These results show that customized surface engineering can be used to achieve negative refraction even though the bulk material has positive refractive index. The surface periodicity provides a tunable parameter to control beam propagation leading to novel optical and microwave devices.

Abstract:Perfect lens can break the diffraction limit by amplifying evanescent wave components emitted from objects and enable subwavelength imaging,which may potentially lead to the revolution of modem imaging technologies.This ground breaking feature has challenged the well-accepted wisdom on the role of evanescent waves in imaging,which has generated significant research interest from the scientific communities across different disciplines.However,it was also being strongly disputed at the beginning.The implementation of this lens would be technically rather difficult and challenging due to the absolute requirement of negative refractive indexed materials that are not available in nature.Artificial electromagnetic materials,widely known as metamaterials,with both electric and magnetic responses have been then proposed to simultaneously generate negative permittivity and permeability constants.Because of the issues of fabrication and loss,the perfect-lens effect was first demonstrated only in microwaves by a two-dimensional transmission line experiment using lumped circuit design with left-handed properties.For optics,which is more anticipated for applications,alternative lens designs have been developed to manipulate evanescent waves in different ways and also create subwavelength imaging.Design and experimental techniques and methodology have been intensively discussed in the literature to improve the fabrication efficiency and device performance.Significant progress has been achieved on subwavelength imaging inspired by the employment of metamaterials.However,there are still critically important technical or physical issues unsolved for all of the subwavelength lens scenarios proposed so far,which demand innovative ideas.In particular,it is still an unknown question that whether a perfect lens with negative refractive index could be made in optics.The promising future is indicated by the recent progress on the experiment for the fabrication of high-quality negative refractive index metamaterials.In this paper,from the historical and progressive aspects of perfect lens,we describe the perspective and outlook based on a survey of the available analysis of parametric and technological challenges imposed by this special lens.

Abstract:We show that a class of negative index (n) materials has interesting anisotropic optical properties, manifest in the effective refraction index that can be positive, negative, or purely imaginary under different incidence conditions. With dispersion taken into account, reflection at a planar negative-index interface exhibits frequency selective total oblique transmission that is distinct from the Brewster effect. Finite-difference-time-domain simulation of realistic negative-n structures confirms the analytic results based on effective indices.

Abstract:A negative refraction interface composed of a positive and negative refractive index material is realized by using two-dimensional transmission line grids. The transient interface reflection and refraction properties are studied by time-domain method where the time evolution of an electromagnetic wave as it hits the interface is simulated and measured. It is found that the wave is trapped temporarily at the interface, reorganizes, and after a certain time, the refractive wave front moves eventually in the negative direction. What's more the refractive wave need longer time to build up than the reflected wave. Experiment results agree well with the simulations.
