Abstract:The optical refractive index of a moving regular medium is calculated by using the Lorentz transformation in this note. It is shown that in some velocity region of medium moving relative to the initial frame K, the moving medium may possess a negative index of refraction measured by the observer fixed at the frame of reference K.
Gain-Assisted Negative Refractive Index in a Quantum Coherent Medium

Abstract:A new scheme for overcoming losses with incoherent optical gain in a quantum-coherent left-handed atomic vapor is suggested. In order to obtain low-loss, lossless or active left-handed media (LHM), a pump fleld, which aims at realizing population inversion of atomic levels, is introduced into a four-level atomic system. Both analytical and numerical results are given to illustrate that such an atomic vapor can exhibit intriguing electric and magnetic responses required for achieving simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability (and hence a gain-assisted quantum-coherent negative refractive index would emerge). The quantum-coherent left-handed atomic vapor presented here could have four fascinating characteristics: i) three-dimensionally isotropic negative refractive index, ii) double- negative atomic medium at visible and infrared wavelengths, iii) high-gain optical ampliflcation, and iv) tunable negative refractive index based on quantum coherent control. Such a three-dimensionally isotropic gain medium with negative refractive index at visible and infrared frequencies would have a potential application in design of new quantum optical and photonic devices, including superlenses for perfect imaging and subwavelength focusing.

Abstract:Scientific community has well recognized that a Lorentzian medium exhibits anomalous dispersion behavior in its resonance absorption region. To satisfy the Krammers-Kronig relation, such an anomalous region has to be accompanied with significant loss and thus, experimental observations of negative group velocity in this region generally require a gain-assisted approach. In this letter, we demonstrate that the negative group velocity can also be observed in the absence of absorption resonance. We show that the k-surface of a passive uniaxial Lorentzian medium undergoes a distortion near the plasma frequency. This process yields an anomalous dispersion bandwidth that is far away from the absorption resonance region and enables the observation of negative group velocity at the plasma frequency band. Introducing anomalous dispersion in a well-controlled manner would greatly benefit the research of ultrafast photonics and find potential applications in optical delay lines, optical data storage and devices for quantum information processing.
Negative Refraction in isotropic achiral and chiral materials

Abstract:We show that negative refraction in materials can occur at frequencies $\omega$ where the real parts of the permittivity $\veps(\omega)$ and the permeability $\mu(\omega)$ have different sign, and that light with such frequencies can propagate just as well as light with frequencies where they have equal sign. Therefore, for negative refraction one does not need to be in the ``double-negative'' regime. We consider negative refractive index achiral materials using the Drude-Lorentz model and chiral materials using the Drude-Born-Fedorov model. We find that the time-averaged Poynting vector always points along the wave vector, the time-averaged energy-flux density is always positive, and the time-averaged energy density is positive (negative) when the refractive index is positive (negative). The phase velocity is negative when the real part of the refractive index is negative, and the group velocity generally changes sign several times as a function of frequency near resonance.

Abstract:We introduce a possible method to realize the negative group velocity of electromagnetic wave in the normal dispersive media. Theoretical analysis from the k-surface of the proposed normal dispersive uniaxial media reveals that the group velocity can be negative if the loss of the media is taken into account. Since the proposed normal dispersive media can be constructed in the GHz frequency by metamaterial, our result may provide an alternative way to the investigation of the abnormal group velocity.

Abstract:In 1968, Veselago [1] predicted that there could still be propagating waves in a medium that had simultaneously negative permittivity ε and permeability μ, because the product of ε and μ would be positive. However, to ensure energy conservation, he concluded that the refractive index must use the negative square root of the product of ε and μ (i.e., n = εμ). A consequence is certain unusual optical features in negative-index media. The electric field vector E, magnetic field vector H and wave vector k are a left-handed triplet, the basis for calling materials with simultaneously negative ε and μ “left-handed materials” (LHMs). LHMs would have novel optical properties. Light at non-normal incidence would bend to the side opposite that in a normal RHM; positive lenses would become negative; a flat slab could focus. The phase velocity of an electromagnetic wave would be opposite to the direction of energy flux, resulting in a reversed Doppler effect. Photons would have negative momentum and apply tension to the interface upon reflection. Recently, this kind of material has been demonstrated experimentally to exist. Shelby et al. [2] measured the scattering angle of the transmitted beam through a prism manufactured from a composite material consisting of a two-dimensional array of copper wires and split ring resonators and showed that the effective refractive index of the material is negative at microwave frequencies. Recent theoretical studies also showed that some photonic crystals might have negative-refraction properties in the near infrared spectral region [3].

Abstract:In this Letter the expression for the refractive index of de Broglie wave in the presence of a potential field is obtained and based on this, the physical meanings of negative index of refraction is revealed. We demonstrate that the electromagnetic wave propagation in a left-handed medium with negative refractive index behaves just like that of antiphotons, which is required of the complex vector field theory. It is believed that the complex vector field theory is helpful in considering the wave propagation and photonic band gap structure in the left-handed medium photonic crystals with a periodicity in negative and positive index of refraction.

Abstract:Radiation pressure and photon momentum in negative-index media are no different than their counterparts in ordinary (positive-index) materials. This is because the parameters responsible for these properties are the admittance, sqrt(epsilon/mu), and the group refractive index n_g of the material (both positive entities), and not the phase refractive index, n=sqrt(epsilon*mu), which is negative in negative-index media. One approach to investigating the exchange of momentum between electromagnetic waves and material media is via the Doppler shift phenomenon. In this paper we use the Doppler shift to arrive at an expression for the radiation pressure on a mirror submerged in a negative-index medium. In preparation for the analysis, we investigate the phenomenon of Doppler shift in various settings, and show the conditions under which a so-called "inverse" Doppler shift could occur. We also argue that a recent observation of the inverse Doppler shift upon reflection from a negative-index medium cannot be correct, because it violates the conservation laws.

Abstract:We show that an electromagnetic (EM) wave undergoes negative refraction at the interface between a positive and negative refractive index material. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations are used to study the time evolution of an EM wave as it hits the interface. The wave is trapped temporarily at the interface and after a long time, the wave front moves eventually in the negative direction. This explains why causality and speed of light are not violated in spite of the negative refraction always present in a negative index material.

Abstract:In Physics, causality is a fundamental postulation arising from the second law of thermodynamics. It states that, the cause of an event precedes its effect. In the context of Electromagnetics, the relativistic causality limits the upper bound of the velocity of information, which is carried by electromagnetic wave packets, to the speed of light in free space (c). In anomalously dispersive media (ADM), it has been shown that, wave packets appear to propagate with a superluminal or even negative group velocity. However, Sommerfeld and Brillouin pointed out that the "front" of such wave packets, known as the initial point of the Sommerfeld precursor, always travels at c. In this work, we investigate the negative-group-velocity transmission of half-sine wave packets. We experimentally observe the wave front and the distortion of modulated wave packets propagating with a negative group velocity in a passive artificial ADM in microwave regime. Different from previous literature on the propagation of superluminal Gaussian packets, strongly distorted sinusoidal packets with non-superluminal wave fronts were observed. This result agrees with Brillouin's assertion, i.e., the severe distortion of seemingly superluminal wave packets makes the definition of group velocity physically meaningless in the anomalously dispersive region.

Abstract:In this work is elaborated the wording of Fermat`s principle for electromagnetic waves spreading in materials with negative index of refractions (MNR). The recent experiments with such material has confirmed their main characteristics, predicted earlier. It is shown that for MNR not applicable wording of Fermat`s principle through minimum (or extremum) of time of spreading the wave between two points. The correct wording for this case is a wording through extremum of total optical length for way between two points moreover optical length at passing of wave through MNR is taken negative. In paper are considered some properties of original flat lenses, executed from MNR.

Abstract:In materials with negative refraction, the direction of wave propagation is opposite to the direction of the wave vector. Using an approach that characterizes the optical response of a medium totally by a generalized dielectric permittivity, ε˜(ω,k⇒), we discuss the possibility of seeing negative refraction for optical waves in a number of nonmagnetic media. These include bulk waves in organic materials and in gyrotropic materials where additional exciton–polariton waves can have a negative group velocity. It is known that dispersion of surface waves can be engineered by tailoring a surface transition layer. We show how this effect can be used to obtain surface waves with negative refraction.

Abstract:We discuss linear and nonlinear optical wave propagation in a left-handed medium (LHM) or medium of negative refraction (NRM). We use the approach of characterizing the medium response totally by a generalized electric polarization [with a dielectric permittivity epsilon(omega,k)] that can be decomposed into curl and noncurl parts. The description has a one-to-one correspondence with the usual approach characterizing the LHM response with a dielectric permittivity epsilon<0 and a magnetic permeability mu<0. The latter approach is less physically transparent in the optical frequency region because the usual definition of magnetization loses its physical meaning. Linear wave propagation in a LHM or NRM is characterized by negative refraction and negative group velocity that could be clearly manifested by ultrashort pulse propagation in such a medium. Nonlinear optical effects in a LHM can be predicted from the same calculations adopted for ordinary media using our general approach.
Negative radiation pressure in metamaterials explained by light-driven atomic mass density rarefication waves

Abstract:The momentum and radiation pressure of light in negative-index metamaterials (NIMs) are commonly expected to reverse their direction from what is observed for normal materials. The negative refraction and inverse Doppler effect of light in NIMs have been experimentally observed, but the equally surprising phenomenon, the negative radiation pressure of light, still lacks experimental verification. We show by simulating the exact position- and time-dependent field-material dynamics in NIMs that the momentum and radiation pressure of light in NIMs can be either positive or negative depending on their subwavelength structure. In NIMs exhibiting negative radiation pressure, the negative total momentum of light is caused by the sum of the positive momentum of the electromagnetic field and the negative momentum of the material. The negative momentum of the material results from the optical force density, which drives atoms backward and reduces the local density of atoms at the site of the light field. In contrast to earlier works, light in NIMs exhibiting negative radiation pressure has both negative total momentum and energy. For the experimental discovery of the negative radiation pressure, one must carefully design the NIM structure and record the joint total pressure of the field and material momentum components.

Abstract:The demonstration and confirmation of metamaterials with simultaneous negative permittivity and permeability, and thus a negative refractive index, has resulted in a surge of interest in the reflection and refraction phenomena at the interfaces of these so-called negative-index materials (NIMs). We present a systematic study of the Brewster angle, i.e., the angle of incidence at which no reflection occurs, for both TE and TM waves scattering at the interface between two semi-infinite planar media, one of which may be a NIM. Detailed physical explanations that account for the Brewster angle for a plane wave incident upon a NIM are provided under the framework of the Ewald-Oseen extinction theorem, considering the reemission of induced electric and magnetic dipoles. The conditions under which the Brewster angle exists are concisely summarized in a map of different material parameter regimes.

Abstract:Chiral nihility media are known to produce a backward wave as one of their two polarizations, yielding negative refraction at the interface of the chiral nihility medium and free space. In this paper, the analysis of chiral nihility effects is illustrated by showing the propagation of a Gaussian beam, both reflected and refracted from an air-chiral interface, and through layered chiral nihility media that are matched to free space. The critical angle for total reflection, and the index-matched total transmission in a matched chiral half-space, are demonstrated. Also demonstrated are the wave splitting, wave widening, and a wave of ldquostanding phaserdquo in matched chiral nihility slabs.

Abstract:Here we re-examine one of the most basic quantities in optics: the refractive index. Considering propagation in a plane, we first develop a general formalism for calculating the direction dependent refractive index in a general bi-anisotropic material. From this we derive the general condition for achieving zero refractive index in a given direction. We show that when the zero-index direction is complex valued the material supports waves that can propagate in only one sense, e.g. in only a clockwise direction. We dub such materials complex axis nihility (CAN) media. Our condition shows that there are an infinite family of both time reversible and time irreversible homogeneous electromagnetic media that support unidirectional propagation for a particular polarization. We give examples showing that scattering from such media results in the complete exclusion of partial waves with one sign of the angular momentum, and that interfaces between such media generally support one-way interface states. As well as giving new sets of material parameters, our simple condition reproduces many of the findings derived using topology, such as unidirectional propagation in gyrotropic media, and spin-momentum locking of evanescent waves.

Abstract:The possibility of the backward waves and negative refractive indices of the gyrotropic chiral materials is studied, and the impedances of the eigenmodes are derived. Since the gyrotropic parameters in the permittivity and permeability tensors favour the realization of the negative refractive index in the gyrotropic chiral material, the negatively refracting medium can be achieved even far off the resonances of the permittivity and permeability. A potential effect of the field quantization in a compact subwavelength cavity resonator containing the gyrotropic chiral material is suggested.
