Abstract:There are about 70 Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) that are now confirmed or suggested to be in physical contact with molecular clouds (MCs) with six kinds of evidence of multiwavelength observations. Recent detailed CO-line spectroscopic mappings of a series of SNRs reveal them to be in cavities of molecular gas, implying the roles the progenitors may have played. We predict a linear correlation between the wind bubble sizes of main-sequence OB stars in a molecular environment and the stellar masses and discuss its implication for supernova progenitors. The molecular environments of SNRs can serve as a good probe for the gamma-rays arising from the hadronic interaction of the accelerated protons, and this paper also discusses the gamma-ray emission from MCs illuminated by diffusive protons that escape from SNR shocks.
Molecular Environment and an X-Ray Spectroscopy of Supernova Remnant Kesteven 78

Abstract:We investigate the molecular environment of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) Kesteven 78 and perform an XMM-Newton X-ray spectroscopic study for the northeastern edge of the remnant. SNR Kes 78 is found to interact with the molecular clouds (MCs) at a systemic local standard of rest velocity of 81 km s(-1). At around this velocity, the SNR appears to contact a long molecular strip in the northeast and a large cloud in the east as revealed in the (CO)-C-13 line, which may be responsible for the radio brightness peak and the OH maser, respectively. The (CO)-C-12-line bright region morphologically matches the eastern bright radio shell in general, and the SNR is consistent in extent with a CO cavity. Broadened (CO)-C-12-line profiles discerned in the eastern maser region and the western clumpy molecular arc and the elevated (CO)-C-12 (J = 2-1)/(J = 1-0) ratios along the SNR boundary may be signatures of shock perturbation in the molecular gas. The SNR-MC association places the SNR at a kinematic distance of 4.8 kpc. The X-rays arising from the northeastern radio shell are emitted by underionized hot (similar to 1.5 keV), low-density (similar to 0.1 cm(-3)) plasma with solar abundance, and the plasma may be of intercloud origin. The age of the remnant is inferred to be about 6 kyr. The size of the molecular cavity in Kes 78 implies an initial mass around 22 M-circle dot for the progenitor.

Abstract:We have carried out 12CO, 13CO, and C18O observations toward the mixed morphology supernova remnant (SNR) IC 443. The observations cover a 1.5*1.5 deg^2 area and allow us to investigate the overall molecular environment of the remnant. Some northern and northeastern partial shell structure of CO gas is around the remnant. One of the partial shells, about 5' extending beyond the northeastern border of the remnant's bright radio shell, seems to just confine the faint radio halo. On the other hand, some faint CO clumps can be discerned along the eastern boundary of the faint remnant's radio halo. Connecting the eastern CO clumps, the northeastern partial shell structures, and the northern CO partial shell, we can see that a half molecular ring structure appears to surround the remnant. The LSR velocity of the half-ring structure is in the range of -5 km/s to -2 km/s, which is consistent with that of the -4 km/s molecular clouds. We suggest that the half-ring structure of the CO emission at V_LSR -4 km/s is associated with the SNR. The structures are possibly swept up by the stellar winds of SNR IC 443's massive progenitor. Based on the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and the Two Micron All Sky Survey near-IR database, 62 young stellar object (YSO) candidates are selected within the radio halo of the remnant. These YSO candidates concentrated along the boundary of the remnant's bright radio shell are likely to be triggered by the stellar winds from the massive progenitor of SNR IC 443.
A Small-Scale Investigation of Molecular Emission Toward the Tip of the Western Lobe of W50/SS433

Abstract:We perform a molecular (CO and CN) line observation using IRAM 30m telescope toward two small regions near the western edge of supernova remnant (SNR) W50/SS433. CO observation reveals spatial correspondence of two molecular clumps at the local-standard-of-rest (LSR) velocity around +53 km s$^{-1}$ with multiwavelength local features of W50/SS433 system. One of the two clumps appears to be embedded in a void of diffuse radio and X-ray emission. Toward the two clumps, asymmetric broad line profiles of the $^{12}$CO lines are obtained, which provide kinematic evidence of the association between the clumps and the jet-related gas. The $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$/$J=1-0$ line ratios ($> 0.9$) and the kinetic temperatures ($\sim 30$ K) of the clumps are distinctively higher than all those of the clumps at other LSR velocities along the same line of sight, which may be physical signatures of the association. We show that the clump coincident with the void can survive the thermal heating if it is surrounded by hot gas, with an evaporation timescale much larger than the age of SNR W50. We also show that the thermal equilibrium in the high temperature clumps can be maintained by the heating of the penetrating environmental CRs. CN ($J=3/1-1/2$) line emission is detected in the two clumps, and the CN abundances derived are much higher than that in the interstellar molecular clouds (MCs) and that in the SNR-interacting MCs.

Abstract:We report the detection of gamma-ray emission coincident with three supernova remnants (SNRs) using data from the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. W41, MSH 17-39, and G337.0-0.1 are SNRs known to be interacting with molecular clouds, as evidenced by observations of hydroxyl (OH) maser emission at 1720 MHz in their directions and other observational information. SNR shocks are expected to be sites of cosmic ray acceleration, and clouds of dense material can provide effective targets for production of gamma-rays from neutral pion-decay. The observations reveal unresolved sources in the direction of G337.0-0.1, and MSH 17-39, and an extended source coincident with W41. We model their broadband emission (radio to gamma-ray) using a simple one-zone model, and after considering scenarios in which the MeV-TeV sources originate from either neutral pion-decay or leptonic emission, we conclude that the gamma-rays are most likely produced through the hadronic channel.

Revisiting the Distance, Environment, and Supernova Properties of SNR G57.2+0.8 That Hosts SGR 1935+2154

Abstract:We have performed a multiwavelength study of supernova remnant (SNR) G57.2+0.8 and its environment. The SNR hosts the magnetar SGR 1935+2154, which emitted an extremely bright millisecond-duration radio burst on 2020 April 28. We used the 12CO and 13CO J = 1–0 data from the Milky Way Image Scroll Painting CO line survey to search for molecular gas associated with G57.2+0.8, in order to constrain the physical parameters (e.g., the distance) of the SNR and its magnetar. We report that SNR G57.2+0.8 is likely impacting the molecular clouds (MCs) at the local standard of rest (LSR) velocity and excites a weak 1720 MHz OH maser with a peak flux density of 47 mJy beam−1. The chance coincidence of a random OH spot falling in the SNR is ≤12%, and the OH–CO correspondence chance is 7% at the maser spot. This combines to give <1% false probability of the OH maser, suggesting a real maser detection. The LSR velocity of the MCs places the SNR and magnetar at a kinematic distance of 6.6 ± 0.7 kpc. The nondetection of thermal X-ray emission from the SNR and the relatively dense environment suggests G57.2+0.8 be an evolved SNR with an age . The explosion energy of G57.2+0.8 is lower than , which is not very energetic even assuming a high ambient density . This reinforces the opinion that magnetars do not necessarily result from very energetic supernova explosions.

Abstract:Supernovae constitute a critical source of energy input to the interstellar medium (ISM). In this short review, we focus on their latest phase of evolution, the supernova remnants (SNRs). We present observations of three old SNRs that have reached the phase where they interact with the ambient ISM: W28, IC443, and 3C391. We show that such objects make up clean laboratories to constrain the physical and chemical processes at work in molecular shock environments. Our studies subsequently allow us to quantify the impact of SNRs on their environment in terms of mass, momentum, and energy dissipation. In turn, their contribution to the energy balance of galaxies can be assessed. Their potential to trigger a further generation of star formation can also be investigated. Finally, our studies provide strong support for the interpretation of gamma-ray emission in SNRs, a crucial step to answer questions related to cosmic rays population and acceleration.

Abstract:Kes 79 (G33.6+0.1) is an aspherical thermal composite supernova remnant (SNR) observed across the electromagnetic spectrum and showing an unusual highly structured morphology, in addition to harboring a central compact object (CCO). Using the CO J = 1–0, J = 2–1, and J = 3–2 data, we provide the first direct evidence and new morphological evidence to support the physical interaction between the SNR and the molecular cloud in the local standard of rest velocity . We revisit the 380 ks XMM-Newton observations and perform a dedicated spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopic study with careful background subtraction. The overall X-ray-emitting gas is characterized by an under-ionized ( ) cool ( keV) plasma with solar abundances, plus an under-ionized ( ) hot ( keV) plasma with elevated Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Ar abundances. The X-ray filaments, spatially correlated with the 24 IR filaments, are suggested to be due to the SNR shock interaction with dense gas, while the halo forms from SNR breaking out into a tenuous medium. Kes 79 appears to have a double-hemisphere morphology viewed along the symmetric axis. Projection effect can explain the multiple-shell structures and the thermal composite morphology. The high-velocity, hot ( keV) ejecta patch with high metal abundances, together with the non-uniform metal distribution across the SNR, indicate an asymmetric SN explosion of Kes 79. We refine the Sedov age to 4.4–6.7 kyr and the mean shock velocity to 730 . Our multi-wavelength study suggests a progenitor mass of ∼15–20 solar masses for the core-collapse explosion that formed Kes 79 and its CCO, PSR J1852+0040.

Abstract:We have carried out 12CO (J=1-0 and 2-1), 13CO (J=1-0), and C18O (J=1-0) observations in the direction of the supernova remnant (SNR) G22.7-0.2. A filamentary molecular gas structure, which is likely part of a larger molecular complex with VLSR 75-79 km/s, is detected and is found to surround the southern boundary of the remnant. In particular, the high-velocity wing (77-110 km/s) in the 12CO (J=1-0 and J=2-1) emission shows convincing evidence of the interaction between SNR G22.7-0.2 and the 75-79 km/s molecular clouds (MCs). Spectra with redshifted profiles, a signature of shocked molecular gas, are seen in the southeastern boundary of the remnant. The association between the remnant and the 77 km/s MCs places the remnant at the near distance of 4.0-4.8 kpc, which agrees with a location on the Scutum-Crux arm. We suggest that SNR G22.7-0.2, SNR W41, and HII region G022.760-0.485 are at the same distance and are associated with GMC G23.0-0.4.
Discovery of Molecular Shells Associated with Supernova Remnants. I. Kesteven 69

Abstract:Supernova remnant (SNR) Kes 69 is morphologically characterized by brightened radio, infrared, and X-ray emission on the southeastern rim, with the 1720 MHz OH masers detected in the northeastern and southeastern regions at various local standard rest (LSR) velocities. We have performed a millimeter observation in CO and HCO(+) lines toward Kes 69. From the northeastern compact maser region, (12)CO and (13)CO emissions' peaks around 65 km s(-1) and 85 km s(-1), which are consistent with the masers' LSR velocities, are detected. In the southeast, a molecular ((12)CO) arc is revealed at 77-86 km s(-1), well coincident with the partial SNR shell detected in the radio continuum and mid-infrared observations. An 85 km s(-1) HCO(+) emission is found to arise from a radio peak on the shell. Both the molecular arc and the HCO(+) emission at similar to 85 km s(-1) seem to be consistent with the presence of extended OH masers along the southeastern boundary of Kes 69. The morphology correspondence between the CO arc and other band emission of the Kes 69 shell provides strong evidence for the association between SNR Kes 69 and the similar to 85 km s(-1) component of molecular gas. The multiwavelength emissions along the southeastern shell can be accounted for by the impact of the SNR shock on a dense, clumpy patch of molecular gas. This pre-existing gas is likely to be a part of the cooled debris of the material swept up by the progenitor's stellar wind. The association of SNR Kes 69 with the molecular cloud at the systemic velocity of similar to 85 km s(-1) enables us to place the SNR at a kinematic distance of 5.2 kpc.
Detection of optical emission from the supernova remnant G7.7-3.7

Abstract:We present the first optical study of the supernova remnant (SNR) G7.7-3.7, with the aim of determining its evolutionary phase since it has been suggested to be the remnant of SN 386 AD. We obtained narrow-band images in the filters H$\alpha$ + [NII], H$\beta$, [OIII], [SII] that revealed faint optical emission in the southern region of the SNR consisting of two filaments elongated in the east-west direction aligned with the X-ray emitting region of the remnant. The filaments were seen in H$\alpha$ + [NII], [OIII] images and marginally in the [SII] images, with a non-detection in H$\beta$. Long-slit spectroscopy of three regions along one filament revealed large ratios of [SII] / H$\alpha$ = (1.6-2.5), consistent with that expected for a shock-heated SNR. The [SII] doublet ratio observed in two of the regions implies an upper limit for the electron density of the gas, with estimates falling below 400 cm$^{-3}$ and 600 cm$^{-3}$ in the respective areas. We discuss potential physical mechanisms that formed the observed optical filaments and we suggest that most likely they resulted by a collision of the SNR with a dense circumstellar shell lying at the southern region of the remnant.

Abstract:Supernova (SN) 1987A is one of the best candidates to exploit the capabilities of the freshly launched XRISM satellite. This celestial object offers the unique opportunity to study the evolution of an SN into a young supernova remnant. To date, the X-ray emission has been dominated by the shocked circumstellar medium, with no shocked ejecta firmly detected. However, recent studies provide compelling evidence that in the forthcoming years, the X-ray emission from SN 1987A will increasingly stem from the ejecta. Our aim is to assess the proficiency of the XRISM-Resolve high-resolution spectrometer in pinpointing signatures of the shocked ejecta in SN 1987A. Taking advantage of a self-consistent state-of-the-art magneto-hydrodynamic simulation that describes the evolution from SN 1987A to its remnant, we synthesized the XRISM-Resolve spectrum of SN 1987A, as it would be collected in the allocated observation during the performance verification phase, which is foreseen for 2024. Our predictions clearly show the leading role of shocked ejecta in shaping the profile of the emission lines. The Doppler broadening associated with the bulk motion along the line of sight of the rapidly expanding ejecta is shown to increase the line widths well above the values observed so far. The quantitative comparison between our synthetic spectra and the XRISM spectra will enable us to establish a strong connection between the broadened line emission and the freshly shocked ejecta. This, in turn, will allow us to retrieve the ejecta dynamics and chemical composition from the X-ray emission.

Abstract:We present ASCA observations of supernova remnant (SNR) G349.7+0.2. The remnant has irregular shell morphology and is interacting with a molecular cloud, evident from the presence of OH (1720 MHz) masers and shocked molecular gas. The X-ray morphology is consistent with that at radio wavelengths, with a distinct enhancement in the south. The X-ray emission from the SNR is well described by a model of a thermal plasma that has yet to reach ionization equilibrium. The hydrogen column of ~6.0 × 1022 cm-2 is consistent with the large distance to the remnant of ~22 kpc estimated from the maser velocities. We derive an X-ray luminosity of LX(0.5-10.0 keV) = 1.8 × 1037d ergs s-1, which makes G349.7+0.2 one of the most X-ray luminous shell-type SNRs known in the Galaxy. The age of the remnant is estimated to be ~2800 yr. The ambient density and pressure conditions appear similar to those inferred for luminous compact SNRs found in starburst regions of other galaxies and provide support for the notion that these may be the result of SNR evolution in the vicinity of dense molecular clouds.
A study of GeV gamma-ray emission towards supernova remnant G51.26+0.11 and its molecular environment

Abstract:ABSTRACT We reanalyse the Fermi-LAT (Large Area Telescope) GeV γ-ray emission in the region of supernova remnant (SNR) G51.26+0.11 and investigate its interstellar molecular environment with the CO line data. At GeV energies, based on 13.2 yr of Fermi-LAT data, the extended γ-ray emission observed in this region is resolved into a uniform-disc source (‘Src A’) with a significance of 19.5σ and a point source (4FGL J1924.3+1628) with a significance of 4.2σ in 0.2–500 GeV. With an angular radius of ∼0.17○, ‘Src A’ overlaps with SNR G51.26+0.11 significantly in the line of sight. On the other hand, the morphological coincidence between the SNR and the ∼+54 km s−1 molecular clouds (MCs) together with the asymmetric or broad 12CO line profiles near the SNR boundary provides evidence for the very likely SNR–MC interaction. The SNR–MC interaction and the H i absorption features indicate that SNR G51.26+0.11 is located at a kinematic distance of 6.2 ± 0.5 kpc. Combined with the results from the multiwavelength analysis, the γ-ray emission of the SNR (‘Src A’) can be naturally explained by a hadronic model with a soft power-law proton spectrum of index ∼2.25.

Abstract:Supernovae remnants (SNRs) represent a major source of feedback from stars on the interstellar medium of galaxies. During the latest stage of supernova explosions (which lasts $10-100$ kyr), shock waves produced by the initial blast modify the chemistry of gas and dust, inject kinetic energy in the surroundings, and may alter star formation characteristics. Simultaneously, gamma -ray emission is generated by the interaction between the ambient medium and cosmic rays, in particular those locally accelerated in the early stages of the explosion. We aim to estimate the total molecular mass, local density, and total column density of H$_2$ and the temperature structure in a shocked clump interacting with the supernova remnant IC443 located in a region where cosmic rays interact with the interstellar medium. Measuring the mass of the dense and neutral component of the medium is a prerequisite to understanding the chemistry, energetics, and GeV to TeV gamma -ray emission Assuming that the emission of H$_2$ pure rotational lines is produced by a collection of gas layers with variable temperature, we compared Spitzer /IRS emission maps for the $ S(0) to S(7) lines with a thermal admixture model. Our description is based on a power-law distribution of thermalized components with temperatures varying between $T_ min = 25$ K and $T_ max = 1500$ K. Our thermal admixture model allows the level populations of H$_2$ to be described by a power-law distribution $dN = Gamma dT$, with $ 2.2 - 4.7$. We measured a total mass $M_ H_2 $ M$_ across the Spitzer/IRS field of observations. Our analysis shows that an estimate of the cold molecular gas temperature is paramount to accurately constraining the H$_2$ mass, although the mass remains affected by significant uncertainties due to the assumptions on the gas temperature distribution.

Dusty Blastwaves of Two Young LMC Supernova Remnants: Constraints on Postshock Compression

Abstract:We present results from mid-IR spectroscopic observations of two young supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) done with the {\it Spitzer Space Telescope}. We imaged SNRs B0509-67.5 and B0519-69.0 with {\it Spitzer} in 2005, and follow-up spectroscopy presented here confirms the presence of warm, shock heated dust, with no lines present in the spectrum. We use model fits to {\it Spitzer} IRS data to estimate the density of the postshock gas. Both remnants show asymmetries in the infrared images, and we interpret bright spots as places where the forward shock is running into material that is several times denser than elsewhere. The densities we infer for these objects depend on the grain omposition assumed, and we explore the effects of differing grain porosity on the model fits. We also analyze archival {\it XMM-Newton} RGS spectroscopic data, where both SNRs show strong lines of both Fe and Si, coming from ejecta, as well as strong O lines, which may come from ejecta or shocked ambient medium. We use model fits to IRS spectra to predict X-ray O line strengths for various grain models and values of the shock compression ratio. For 0509-67.5, we find that compact (solid) grain models require nearly all O lines in X-ray spectra to originate in reverse-shocked ejecta. Porous dust grains would lower the strength of ejecta lines relative to those arising in the shocked ambient medium. In 0519-69.0, we find significant evidence for a higher than standard compression ratio of 12, implying efficient cosmic-ray acceleration by the blast wave. A compact grain model is favored over porous grain models. We find that the dust-to-gas mass ratio of the ambient medium is significantly lower than what is expected in the ISM.

Abstract:ISO spectral observations of the supernova remnant RCW103 are presented. This object is the prototype of relatively young remnants with fast shocks interacting with dense interstellar medium. The spectrum is dominated by prominent lines of [NeII], [SiII], [FeII] and other low excitation species which provide, for the first time, a simple and reliable estimate of the gas abundances of refractory (Si, Fe, Ni) and non-refractory (Ne, P, S, Cl, Ar) species. Apart from nickel, all the derived abundances are close to solar, confirming that the shock has destroyed all dust grains. Like the optical nickel lines, [NiII] 6.64micron yields Ni abundances a factor ~10 solar which we propose results from a large underestimation of the computed Ni+ collision strengths. The observed intensities and velocity widths of ionic lines are compatible with emission from the post-shock region alone with only a very small (if any) contribution from the photoionized precursor. This result does not agree with shock models which predict that the precursor should emit powerful line emission, especially from highly ionized species. The possible consequence of this on the modelling of Seyfert spectra is briefly discussed.

Abstract:The W28 supernova remnant is an excellent prototype for observing shocked gas resulting from the interaction of supernova remnants (SNRs) and adjacent molecular clouds (MCs). We present two new signatures of shocked molecular gas in this remnant. One is the detection of main-line extended OH (1667 MHz) absorption with broad linewidths. The column density of OH estimated from the optical depth profiles is consistent with a theoretical model in which OH is formed behind a C-type shock front. The second is the detection of extended, weak OH (1720 MHz) line emission with narrow linewidth distributed throughout the shocked region of W28. These give observational support to the idea that compact maser sources delineate the brightest component of a much larger region of main line OH absorption and nonthermal OH (1720 MHz) emission tracing the global structure of shocked molecular gas. Main line OH (1665/67) absorption and extended OH (1720 MHz) emission line studies can serve as powerful tools to detect SNR-MC interaction even when bright OH (1720 MHz) masers are absent.
