Abstract:In relation to the BSSN formulation of the Einstein equations, we write down the boundary conditions that result from the vanishing of the projection of the Einstein tensor normally to a timelike hypersurface. Furthermore, by setting up a well-posed system of propagation equations for the constraints, we show explicitly that there are three constraints that are incoming at the boundary surface and that the boundary equations are linearly related to them. This indicates that such boundary conditions play a role in enforcing the propagation of the constraints in the region interior to the boundary. Additionally, we examine the related problem for a strongly hyperbolic first-order reduction of the BSSN equations and determine the characteristic fields that are prescribed by the three boundary conditions, as well as those that are left arbitrary.

Abstract:The definition of 'classical state', and how it was used in earlier work to prove a decomposition theorem internally in the language of State Property Systems, presupposes as an additional datum an orthocomplementation on the property lattice of a physical system. In this paper we argue on the basis of the epsilon-model on the Poincare sphere that a notion of 'topologicity' for states can be seen as an alternative (operationally foundable) classicality notion in the absence of an orthocomplementation, and compare it to the known and operationally founded concept of classicality.

Abstract:A 'state property system' is the mathematical structure which models an arbitrary physical system by means of its set of states, its set of properties, and a relation of 'actuality of a certain property for a certain state'. We work out a new axiomatization for standard quantum mechanics, starting with the basic notion of state property system, and making use of a generalization of the standard quantum mechanical notion of 'superposition' for state property systems.

On the Existence and Disjunction Properties in Structural Set Theory

Abstract:We formulate a definition of the existence property that works with "structural" set theories, in the mode of ETCS (the elementary theory of the category of sets). We show that a range of structural set theories, when formulated using constructive logic, satisfy the disjunction, numerical existence, and existence properties; in particular, intuitionist ETCS, formulated with separation and Shulman's replacement of contexts axiom, satisfies these properties. As a consequence of this, we show that, working constructively, replacement of contexts is strictly weaker than collection.

Abstract:We analyse the implications of the closure of the physical for experiments in the scientific study of consciousness when all the details are considered, especially how measurement results relate to physical events. It turns out that the closure of the physical has surprising implications that conflict with scientific practice. These implications point to a fundamental flaw in the paradigm underlying many experiments conducted to date and pose a challenge to any research programme that aims to ground a physical functionalist or identity-based understanding of consciousness on empirical observations.

Abstract:The topological interpretation of modal logics provides descriptive languages and proof systems for reasoning about points of topological spaces. Recent work has been devoted to model checking of spatial logics on discrete spatial structures, such as finite graphs and digital images, with applications in various case studies including medical image analysis. These recent developments required a generalisation step, from topological spaces to closure spaces. In this work we initiate the study of bisimilarity and minimisation algorithms that are consistent with the closure spaces semantics. For this purpose we employ coalgebraic models. We present a coalgebraic definition of bisimilarity for quasi-discrete models, which is adequate with respect to a spatial logic with reachability operators, complemented by a free and open-source minimisation tool for finite models. We also discuss the non-quasi-discrete case, by providing a generalisation of the well-known set-theoretical notion of topo-bisimilarity, and a categorical definition, in the same spirit as the coalgebraic rendition of neighbourhood frames, but employing the covariant power set functor, instead of the contravariant one. We prove its adequacy with respect to infinitary modal logic.
A note on the connectedness property of union-free generic sets of partial orders

Abstract:This short note describes and proves a connectedness property which was introduced in Blocher et al. [2023] in the context of data depth functions for partial orders. The connectedness property gives a structural insight into union-free generic sets. These sets, presented in Blocher et al. [2023], are defined by using a closure operator on the set of all partial orders which naturally appears within the theory of formal concept analysis. In the language of formal concept analysis, the property of connectedness can be vividly proven. However, since within Blocher et al. [2023] we did not discuss formal concept analysis, we outsourced the proof to this note.

Abstract:This research note provides novel results concerning the incremental computation of the stable and ideal argumentation semantics, by extending the division-based method presented in [1] and correcting a flawed claim given there. As a basis for these results, the note synthetically reviews and discusses the topology-related properties of directionality and SCC-recursiveness in abstract argumentation semantics and analyzes their relationships with the division-based method.

Abstract:The connected door space is an enigmatic topological space in which every proper nonempty subset is either open or closed, but not both. This paper provides an elementary proof of the classification theorem of connected door spaces. More importantly, we show that connected door topologies can be viewed as solutions of the valuation $f(A)+f(B)=f(A\cup B)+f(A\cap B)$ and the equation $f(A)+f(B)=f(A\cup B)$, respectively. In addition, some special solutions, which can be regarded as a union of connected door spaces, are provided.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce some versions of relative connectedness of subspaces of a topological space and we give some facts and relations among them. We prove that these relative versions satisfy some of the classical properties of connectedness. Additionally, we apply our results to the theory of hyperspaces, aiming to address a general problem posed by Arhangel'skii (Comment Math Univ Carolin 36:305–325, 1995, Problem 3).

Abstract:The aim of this article is to represent the general description of an entity by means of its states, contexts and properties. The entity that we want to describe does not necessarily have to be a physical entity, but can also be an entity of a more abstract nature, for example a concept, or a cultural artifact, or the mind of a person, etc..., which means that we aim at very general description. The effect that a context has on the state of the entity plays a fundamental role, which means that our approach is intrinsically contextual. The approach is inspired by the mathematical formalisms that have been developed in axiomatic quantum mechanics, where a specific type of quantum contextuality is modelled. However, because in general states also influence context -- which is not the case in quantum mechanics -- we need a more general setting than the one used there. Our focus on context as a fundamental concept makes it possible to unify `dynamical change' and `change under influence of measurement', which makes our approach also more general and more powerful than the traditional quantum axiomatic approaches. For this reason an experiment (or measurement) is introduced as a specific kind of context. Mathematically we introduce a state context property system as the structure to describe an entity by means of its states, contexts and properties. We also strive from the start to a categorical setting and derive the morphisms between state context property systems from a merological covariance principle. We introduce the category SCOP with as elements the state context property systems and as morphisms the ones that we derived from this merological covariance principle. We introduce property completeness and state completeness and study the operational foundation of the formalism

Abstract:We consider quantifier-free spatial logics, designed for qualitative spatial representation and reasoning in AI, and extend them with the means to represent topological connectedness of regions and restrict the number of their connected components. We investigate the computational complexity of these logics and show that the connectedness constraints can increase complexity from NP to PSpace, ExpTime and, if component counting is allowed, to NExpTime.

Algebraic connectedness and bipartiteness of quantum graphs

Abstract:Connectedness and bipartiteness are basic properties of classical graphs, and the purpose of this paper is to investigate the case of quantum graphs. We introduce the notion of connectedness and bipartiteness of quantum graphs in terms of graph homomorphisms. This paper shows that regular tracial quantum graphs have the same algebraic characterization of connectedness and bipartiteness as classical graphs. We also prove the equivalence between bipartiteness and two-colorability of quantum graphs by comparing two notions of graph homomorphisms respecting adjacency matrices or edge spaces. In particular, all kinds of quantum two-colorability are mutually equivalent for regular connected tracial quantum graphs.

Abstract:We consider differential operators $A$ that can be represented by means of a so-called closure relation in terms of a simpler operator $A_{\operatorname{ext}}$ defined on a larger space. We analyze how the spectral properties of $A$ and $A_{\operatorname{ext}}$ are related and give sufficient conditions for exponential stability of the semigroup generated by $A$ in terms of the semigroup generated by $A_{\operatorname{ext}}$. As applications we study the long-term behaviour of a coupled wave-heat system on an interval, parabolic equations on bounded domains that are coupled by matrix valued potentials, and of linear infinite-dimensional port-Hamiltonian systems with dissipation on an interval.

Relative cell complexes in closure spaces

Abstract:We give necessary and sufficient conditions for certain pushouts of topological spaces in the category of Cech's closure spaces to agree with their pushout in the category of topological spaces. We prove that in these two categories, the constructions of cell complexes by a finite sequences of closed cell attachments, which attach arbitrarily many cells at a time, agree. Likewise, the constructions of finite CW complexes relative to a compactly generated weak Hausdorff space also agree. On the other hand, we give examples showing that the constructions of finite-dimensional CW complexes, CW complexes of finite type, and finite relative CW complexes need not agree.

The Connectivity of Boolean Satisfiability: Dichotomies for Formulas and Circuits

Abstract:For Boolean satisfiability problems, the structure of the solution space is characterized by the solution graph, where the vertices are the solutions, and two solutions are connected iff they differ in exactly one variable. In 2006, Gopalan et al. studied connectivity properties of the solution graph and related complexity issues for CSPs, motivated mainly by research on satisfiability algorithms and the satisfiability threshold. They proved dichotomies for the diameter of connected components and for the complexity of the st-connectivity question, and conjectured a trichotomy for the connectivity question. Recently, we were able to establish the trichotomy [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1312.4524" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1312.4524">arXiv:1312.4524</a>]. Here, we consider connectivity issues of satisfiability problems defined by Boolean circuits and propositional formulas that use gates, resp. connectives, from a fixed set of Boolean functions. We obtain dichotomies for the diameter and the two connectivity problems: on one side, the diameter is linear in the number of variables, and both problems are in P, while on the other side, the diameter can be exponential, and the problems are PSPACE-complete. For partially quantified formulas, we show an analogous dichotomy.

Abstract:Given an equivalence relation ~ on a set U, there are two abstract notions of an element of the quotient set U/~. The #1 abstract notion is a set S=[u] of equivalent elements of U (an equivalence class); the #2 notion is an abstract entity u_{S} that is definite on what is common to the elements of the equivalence class S but is otherwise indefinite on the differences between those elements. For instance, the #1 interpretation of a homotopy type is an equivalence class of homotopic spaces, but the #2 interpretation, e.g., as developed in homotopy type theory, is an abstract space (without points) that has the properties that are in common to the spaces in the equivalence class but is otherwise indefinite. In philosophy, the #2 abstract entities might be called paradigm-universals, e.g., `the white thing' as opposed to the #1 abstract notion of "the set of white things" (out of some given collection U). The paper shows how this #2 notion of a paradigm may be mathematically modeled using incidence matrices in Boolean logic and density matrices in probability theory. Then we cross the bridge to the density matrix treatment of the indefinite superposition states in quantum mechanics (QM). This connection between the #2 abstracts in mathematics and ontic indefinite states in QM elucidates Abner Shimony's literal or objective indefiniteness interpretation of QM.

Abstract:We provide a detailed study of two properties of spaces and pairs of spaces, the surjection property and the epsilon-surjection property, that were recently introduced to characterize the notion of computable type arising from computability theory. For a class of spaces including the finite simplicial complexes, we develop techniques to prove or disprove these properties using homotopy and homology theories, and give applications of these results. In particular, we answer an open question on the computable type property, showing that it is not preserved by taking products. We also observe that computable type is decidable for finite simplicial complexes.

Topological properties of some classes of submodules

Abstract:We study the topology of a class of proper submodules and some of its distinguished subclasses and call them structure spaces. We give several criteria for the quasi-compactness of these structure spaces. We study $T_0$ and $T_1$ separation properties and characterize structure spaces in which nonempty irreducible closed subsets have unique generic points. We provide a sufficient condition for the connectedness of structure spaces. We prove that the structure spaces of proper submodules are spectral, and moreover, we characterize the spectral structure spaces of Noetherian modules. Finally, we discuss continuous functions between these spaces.
