Abstract:In this article we resolve Bertrand’s probability paradox and show why it has perplexed researchers for 120 years. This paradox appears to have three equally plausible, yet incompatible, solutions. We begin by showing two facts, the random chords referred to in Bertrand’s paradox are homogeneously distributed and there is no disagreement among people on this point. Based on these facts, we rigorously prove that two of the three alleged answers are not sound because of their false assumptions and that only one solution is correct. The paradox is therefore no longer paradoxical. We also reveal two significant stumbling blocks that have persistently caused puzzles with regard to this paradox: 1) misunderstanding of the nature of homogeneously distributed chords, and 2) a disparity between the problem as originally conceived in the mind and its subsequent representation. We conclude by presenting our reflections on the subtleties of the paradox and on some prevalent misconceptions that have historically plagued attempts to resolve it.
The Banach-Tarski paradox for some subsets of finite-dimensional normed spaces over non-Archimedean valued fields

Abstract:We show some results related to the classical Banach-Tarski paradox in the setting of finite-dimensional normed spaces over a non-Archimedean valued field $K$. For instance, all balls and spheres in $K^n$, and the whole space $K^n$ (for $n\ge 2$) are paradoxical with respect to certain groups of isometries of $K^n$. If $K$ is locally compact (e.g., $K$ is the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers for any prime number $p$), any two bounded subsets of $K^n$ with nonempty interiors are equidecomposable (and paradoxical) with respect to a certain group of isometries of $K^n$ (for $n\ge 2$).

Some paradoxes of Infinity revisited

Abstract:In this article, some classical paradoxes of infinity such as Galileo's paradox, Hilbert's paradox of the Grand Hotel, Thomson's lamp paradox, and the rectangle paradox of Torricelli are considered. In addition, three paradoxes regarding divergent series and a new paradox dealing with multiplication of elements of an infinite set are also described. It is shown that the surprising counting system of an Amazonian tribe, Pirahã, working with only three numerals (one, two, many) can help us to change our perception of these paradoxes. A recently introduced methodology allowing one to work with finite, infinite, and infinitesimal numbers in a unique computational framework not only theoretically but also numerically is briefly described. This methodology is actively used nowadays in numerous applications in pure and applied mathematics and computer science as well as in teaching. It is shown in the article that this methodology also allows one to consider the paradoxes listed above in a new constructive light.

Abstract:The fundamental proposal in this article is that logical formulas of the form (f <-> ~f) are not contradictions, and that formulas of the form (t <-> t) are not tautologies. Such formulas, wherever they appear in mathematics, are instead reason to conclude that f and t have a third truth value, different from true and false. These formulas are circular definitions of f and t. We can interpret the implication formula (f <-> ~f) as a rule, a procedure, to find the truth value of f on the left side: we just need to find the truth value of f on the right side. When we use the rules to ask if f and t are true or false, we need to keep asking if they are true or false over and over, forever. Russell's paradox and the liar paradox have the form (f <-> ~f). The truth value provides a straightforward means of avoiding contradictions in these problems. One broad consequence is that the technique of proof by contradiction involving formulas of the form (f <-> ~f) becomes invalid. One such proof by contradiction is one form of proof that the halting problem is uncomputable. The truth value also appears in Cantor's diagonal argument, Berry's paradox, and the Grelling-Nelson paradox.

Gödel's Program in Set Theory

Abstract:Gödel proved in the 1930s in his famous Incompleteness Theorems that not all statements in mathematics can be proven or disproven from the accepted ZFC axioms. A few years later he showed the celebrated result that Cantor's Continuum Hypothesis is consistent. Afterwards, Gödel raised the question whether, despite the fact that there is no reasonable axiomatic framework for all mathematical statements, natural statements, such as Cantor's Continuum Hypothesis, can be decided via extending ZFC by large cardinal axioms. While this question has been answered negatively, the problem of finding good axioms that decide natural mathematical statements remains open. There is a compelling candidate for an axiom that could solve Gödel's problem: V = Ultimate-L. In addition, due to recent results the Sealing scenario has gained a lot of attention. We describe these candidates as well as their impact and relationship.

Theoremizing Yablo's Paradox

Abstract:To counter a general belief that all the paradoxes stem from a kind of circularity (or involve some self--reference, or use a diagonal argument) Stephen Yablo designed a paradox in 1993 that seemingly avoided self--reference. We turn Yablo's paradox, the most challenging paradox in the recent years, into a genuine mathematical theorem in Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). Indeed, Yablo's paradox comes in several varieties; and he showed in 2004 that there are other versions that are equally paradoxical. Formalizing these versions of Yablo's paradox, we prove some theorems in LTL. This is the first time that Yablo's paradox(es) become new(ly discovered) theorems in mathematics and logic.

A Renunciation of Axiom, A New Conception of Logic

Abstract:Mathematicians invented Mathematics to escape from words, but at last they depend on them just as much as everybody else. At the end, all basic definitions will be reliant on words, yet the mathematician believes that he's elevated from them by use of axioms, only that just postpones the problem and later becomes more serious Gödelian problems due to the countability of the axiomatic array. I think we should do our best to rid ourselves of axioms, and in this paper, I revisit what's called "Naïve Set Theory", which is set theory that is fully reliant on verbal definitions, and resolve the problems that were once found with it in the form of paradoxes, most notably, Russell's Paradox. I believe that by this, a new approach to mathematics as a whole is presented, an approach that refers to mathematics as the science of definitions. The question "how do you define definition?" will not be a part of Mathematics but of Metamathematics and to it many of the problems known about Naïve Set Theory will be funneled. A thorough yet concise treatment of the matter will be given in this paper.

Abstract:The Axiom of Choice can be used to prove the Banach-Alaoglu theorem, while a weakened form of the Axiom of Choice is required to prove the full strength of the Hahn-Banach theorem, which is equivalent to the Banach-Alaoglu theorem. Although the Banach-Alaoglu theorem and the full- strength Axiom of Choice are not exactly equivalent, they are closely related. The Banach-Alaoglu theorem is a compactness theorem whose proof mainly depends on Tychonoff's theorem. In this article, Banach-Alaoglu theorem is equivalent to the axiom of choice, has been proved.

Abstract:This text summarizes and expands the content of a general audience talk given in 2018 at the University of Mainz. Motivated by recent developments in dependent type theory and infinity category theory, it presents a history of ideas around the concepts of truth, proof, equality, and equivalence as well as their relation to human thought. We describe a few selected ideas of Platon, Aristoteles, Leibniz, Kant, Frege and others and then pass to the results of Gödel and Tarski about incompleteness, undecidability and truth in deductive systems and their semantic models. The main focus of this text, however, is the development of dependent type theory through the work of Per Martin--Löf and recent developments in homotopy type theory, i.e., the univalent foundations program of Vladimir Voevodsky and others. These theories allow the notion of identity types, which gives new possibilities for handling equality, symmetry, equivalence and isomorphisms in a conceptual way. Martin--Löf type theories have semantic models in (infinity,1)-categories, which are related to simplicial localizations of Quillen model categories. The interaction of type theory with infinity category theory is a new paradigm for a structural view on mathematics which is superior to set theory. It also supports the recent emerging trend for computer assisted proofs in mathematics and verification of algorithms and software in computer science.

Abstract:Wittgenstein's paradoxical theses that unproved propositions are meaningless, proofs form new concepts and rules, and contradictions are of limited concern, led to a variety of interpretations, most of them centered on the rule-following skepticism. We argue that his intuitions rather reflect resistance to treating meaning as fixed content, and are better understood in the light of C.S. Peirce's distinction between corollarial and theorematic proofs. We show how Peirce's insight that "all necessary reasoning is diagrammatic", vindicated in modern epistemic logic and semantic information theory, helps explain the paradoxical ability of deduction to generate new knowledge and meaning.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a dialogue between Rabindranath Tagore and Albert Einstein, where Tagore argued that our knowledge is essentially human, while Einstein maintained that some kinds of knowledge are more objective. Arguments by Davis and Hersh concerning the nature of mathematics support the idea of mathematical truth being a human construct. It may further be argued that the scientific theories we arrive at are very much a result of the particular mathematical and experimental tools that we use. There may however be a deeper kind of knowledge that science has yet to understand.

Abstract:This paper gives a counterexample to the impossibility, by G\"odel's second incompleteness theorem, of proving a formula expressing the consistency of arithmetic in a fragment of arithmetic on the assumption that the latter is consistent. This counterexample gives rise to a new type of metamathematical paradox, to be called the G\"odel-Wette paradox, which E. Wette claims to have established since some time ago (see [Wette, 1971], [Wette, 1974]). Nevertheless, our work is independent of Wette's since we have failed to understand the details of his work although we recognize the possibility of the correctness of the latter. Furthermore, the G\"odel-Wette paradox is not the only foundational anomaly which the framework of our approach has uncovered but new questions concerning the decision problem, completeness problem, truth definitions and the status of Richard's paradox in arithmetic and set theory (including type theory) have arisen as well. This work will, eventually be unified into a single monograph.

Abstract:In this paper, methods of second order and higher order reverse mathematics are applied to versions of a theorem of Banach that extends the Schroeder-Bernstein theorem. Some additional results address statements in higher order arithmetic formalizing the uncountability of the power set of the natural numbers. In general, the formalizations of higher order principles here have a Skolemized form asserting the existence of functionals that solve problems uniformly. This facilitates proofs of reversals in axiom systems with restricted choice.

Abstract:The Axiom of Choice (AoC), a foundational proposition in set theory, allows for the selection of elements from a collection of non-empty sets without specifying the selection method. Surprisingly, this mathematical principle o↵ers insights into the behavior of Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, particularly their generation of outputs not strictly rooted in training data, termed as ”hallucinations”. While the AoC has faced both acceptance and skepticism in the mathematical community [Blass(1984)] [Fraenkel et al.(1973)Fraenkel, Bar-Hillel, and Levy] [Howard and Rubin(1998)] [Jech(2008)] [Kanamori(2008)], evidenced by results like the Banach-Tarski Paradox [Wagon(1993)], its parallels in LLMs are seen when these models make ambiguous or seemingly rule-less decisions in text generation. Addressing LLM hallucinations might necessitate rethinking the implicit use of the AoC, potentially integrating rule-based approaches. This exploration highlights the un-expected connection between abstract mathematical concepts and the operational intricacies of advanced machine learning models.

Abstract:The Borel--Kolmogorov paradox of conditioning with respect to events of prior probability zero has fascinated students and researchers since its discovery more than 100 years ago. Classical conditioning is only valid with respect to events of positive probability. If we ignore this constraint and condition on such sets, for example events of type $\{Y=y\}$ for a continuously distributed random variable $Y$, almost any probability measure can be chosen as the conditional measure on such sets. There have been numerous descriptions and explanations of the paradox' appearance in the setting of conditioning on a subset of probability zero. However, most treatments don't supply explicit instructions on how to avoid it. We propose to close this gap by defining a version of conditional measure which utilizes the Hausdorff measure. This makes the choice canonical in the sense that it only depends on the geometry of the space, thus removing any ambiguity. We describe the set of possible measures arising in the context of the Borel--Kolmogorov paradox and classify those coinciding with the canonical measure. The objective of this manuscript is to provide a manual for singular conditional probability: We give an explicit explanation in which settings ambiguity arises (and where not) and how to get rid of this ambiguity once and for all by a canonical choice.

Abstract:Astrophysical paradoxes are the paradoxes of physics. The main motivation of a formulated paradox is clearly recognized in the scientific environment because the phenomenon of a paradox itself has become interesting. There is an explanation of how and why the phenomenon of paradox started to exist, as there is an explanation for the existence of any phenomenon. A paradox has its structure, which defines the functional aim of creating paradoxes. According to the structure there are different types of paradoxes in astrophysics and some of them are going to be classified and analyzed here. Astrophysical paradoxes have mostly been solved or else there are theoretical premises for their solution. Their structure is recognizable in two distinct ways that lead to the solution through changing the paradigm or through a hierarchical sequence ending in the solution.
