Abstract:A theory of Poincaré series is developed for Lobachevsky space of arbitrary dimension. For a general non-uniform lattice a Selberg-Kloosterman zeta function is introduced. It has meromorphic continuation to the plane with poles at the corresponding automorphic spectrum. When the lattice is a unit group of a rational quadratic form, the Selberg-Kloosterman zeta function is computed explicitly in terms of exponential sums. In this way a non-trivial Ramanujan-like bound analogous to “Selberg’s 3/16 bound” is proved in general.
Euler systems for conjugate-symplectic motives

Abstract:Let $\rho$ be a conjugate-symplectic, geometric representation of the Galois group of a CM field. Under the assumption that $\rho$ is automorphic, even-dimensional, and of minimal regular Hodge--Tate type, we construct an Euler system for $\rho$ in the sense of forthcoming work of Jetchev--Nekovar--Skinner. The construction is based on Theta cycles as introduced in a previous paper, following works of Kudla and Liu on arithmetic theta series on unitary Shimura varieties; it relies on a certain modularity hypothesis for those theta series. Under some ordinariness assumptions, one can attach to $\rho$ a p-adic L-function. By recent results of Liu and the author, and the theory of Jetchev--Nekovar--Skinner, we deduce the following (unconditional) result under mild assumptions: if the p-adic L-function of $\rho$ vanishes to order 1 at the centre, then the Selmer group of $\rho$ has rank 1, generated by the class of an algebraic cycle. This confirms a case of the p-adic Beilinson--Bloch--Kato conjecture.

Abstract:In this article we propose formulas for the connected K-theory class of the pointed Brill-Noether loci in Prym varieties, which extends the result by Concini and Pragacz. Applying the formulas, we compute the holomorphic Euler Characteristics of the loci.

Abstract:We relate Fubini's theorem for Euler characteristics to Riemann-Hurwtiz formulae, and reprove a classical result of Iversen. The techniques used include algebraic geometry, complex geometry, and model theory. Possible applications to the study of wild ramification in finite characteristic are discussed.

Abstract:Dedekind sums are arithmetic sums that were first introduced by Dedekind in the context of elliptic functions and modular forms, and later recognized to be surprisingly ubiquitous. Among the variations and generalizations introduced since, there is a construction of Dedekind sums for lattices in $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbf{R}). Building upon work of Asai, we prove the reciprocity law for these Dedekind sums, based on a concrete realization of the Euler class. As an application, we obtain an explicit formula expressing Dedekind sums for Hecke triangle groups in terms of continued fractions.

Abstract:For a unimodular totally disconnected locally compact group $G$ we introduce and study an analogue of the Hattori-Stallings rank $\tilde{\rho}(P)\in\mathbf{h}_G$ for a finitely generated projective rational discrete left $\mathbb Q[G]$-module $P$. Here $\mathbf{h}_G$ denotes the $\mathbb Q$-vector space of left invariant Haar measures of $G$. Indeed, an analogue of Kaplansky's theorem holds in this context (cf. Theorem A). As in the discrete case, using this rank function it is possible to define a rational discrete Euler-Poincaré characteristic $\tilde{\chi}_G$ whenever $G$ is a unimodular totally disconnected locally compact group of type $\mathrm{FP}_\infty$ of finite rational discrete cohomological dimension. E.g., when $G$ is a discrete group of type $\mathrm{FP}$, then $\tilde{\chi}_G$ coincides with the ''classical'' Euler-Poincaré characteristic times the counting measure $\mu_{\{1\}}$. For a profinite group $\mathcal{O}$, $\tilde{\chi}_{\mathcal{O}}$ equals the probability Haar measure $\mu_{\mathcal{O}}$ on $\mathcal{O}$. Many more examples are calculated explicitly (cf. Example 1.7 and Section 5). In the last section, for a totally disconnected locally compact group $G$ satisfying an additional finiteness condition, we introduce and study a formal Dirichlet series $\zeta_{_{G,\mathcal{O}}}(s)$ for any compact open subgroup $\mathcal{O}$. In several cases it happens that $\zeta_{_{G,\mathcal{O}}}(s)$ defines a meromorphic function $\tilde{\zeta}_{_{G,\mathcal{O}}}\colon \mathbb{C} \to\bar{\mathbb C}$ of the complex plane satisfying miraculously the identity $\tilde{\chi}_G=\tilde{\zeta}_{_{G,\mathcal{O}}}(-1)^{-1}\cdot\mu_{\mathcal{O}}$. Here $\mu_{\mathcal{O}}$ denotes the Haar measure of $G$ satisfying $\mu_{\mathcal{O}}(\mathcal{O})=1$.

Abstract:In this companion article to [HKK24], we apply the theory of equivariant Poincaré duality developed there in the special case of cyclic groups $C_p$ of prime order to remove, in a special case, a technical condition given by Davis--Lück [DL24] in their work on the Nielsen realisation problem for aspherical manifolds. Along the way, we will also give a complete characterisation of $C_p$--Poincaré spaces as well as introduce a genuine equivariant refinement of the classical notion of virtual Poincaré duality groups which might be of independent interest.

Spherical varieties and non-ordinary families of cohomology classes

Abstract:We give a construction of non-ordinary $p$-adic families of classes in the cohomology of locally symmetric spaces associated to spherical pairs of reductive groups. In the étale case, we show how to map these classes into Galois cohomology. The methods developed in this paper can be used to give new constructions of $p$-adic families of Euler systems and $p$-adic $L$-functions. As an example, we show how the constructions of this paper can be used to construct norm-compatible classes associated to non-ordinary Siegel modular forms, generalising $p$-part of the Lemma--Flach Euler system constructed by Loeffler--Skinner--Zerbes.

Abstract:We relate the Brasselet number of a complex analytic function-germ defined on a complex analytic set to the critical points of its real part on the regular locus of the link. Similarly we give a new characterization of the Euler obstruction in terms of the critical points on the regular part of the link of the projection on a generic real line. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of the relation between the Euler obstruction and the Gauss–Bonnet measure, conjectured by Fu.

An Euler system for the adjoint of a modular form

Abstract:We construct an Euler system for the adjoint Galois representation of a modular form, using motivic cohomology classes arising from Hilbert modular surfaces. We use this Euler system to give an upper bound for the Selmer group of the adjoint representation over the cyclotomic Zp-extension, which agrees with the predictions of the Iwasawa main conjecture up to powers of p and the augmentation ideal.

Abstract:We discuss Euler characteristics for finitely generated modules over Iwasawa algebras. We show that the Euler characteristic of a module is well-defined whenever the 0th homology group is finite if and only if the relevant compact p-adic Lie group is finite-by-nilpotent and that in this case all pseudo-null modules have trivial Euler characteristic. We also prove some other results relating to the triviality of Euler characteristics for pseudo-null modules. We also prove some analogous results for the Akashi series of Coates et al.

Abstract:We study how Rankin-Selberg periods interact with integral structures in spherical Whittaker type representations. Using this representation-theoretic framework, we show that the local Euler factors appearing in the construction of the motivic Rankin-Selberg Euler system for a product of modular forms are integrally optimal; i.e. any construction of this type with any choice of integral input data would give local factors appearing in tame norm relations at $p$ which are integrally divisible by the Euler factor $\mathcal{P}_p^{'}(\mathrm{Frob}_p^{-1})$ modulo $p-1$.

Abstract:It is shown that Euler's theorem for graphs can be generalized for 2-complexes. Two notions that generalize cycle and Eulerian tour are introduced (``circlet'' and ``Eulerian cover''), and we show that for a strongly-connected, pure 2-complex, the following are equivalent: (i) each edge meets a positive even number of 2-cells (faces), (ii) the complex can be decomposed as the face-disjoint union of circlets, and (iii) the complex has an Eulerian cover. A number of examples are provided.

Abstract:We construct a family of elliptic surfaces with $p_g=q=1$ that arise from base change of the Hesse pencil. We identify explicitly a component of the higher Noether-Lefschetz locus with positive Mordell-Weil rank, and a particular surface having maximal Picard number and defined over $\mathbb Q$. These examples satisfy the infinitesimal Torelli theorem, providing a second proof of the dominance of period map, which was first obtained by Engel-Greer-Ward. A third proof is provided using the Shioda modular surface associated with $\Gamma_0(11)$. Finally, we find birational models for the degenerations at the boundary of the one-dimensional Noether-Lefschetz locus, and extend the period map at those limit points.

Abstract:The Möbius function of the subgroup lattice of a finite group has been introduced by Hall and applied to investigate several questions. In this paper, we consider the Möbius function defined on an order ideal related to the lattice of the subgroups of an irreducible subgroup G of the general linear group acting on the n -dimensional vector space , where is the finite field with q elements. We find a relation between this function and the Euler characteristic of two simplicial complexes and , the former raising from the lattice of the subspaces of V , the latter from the subgroup lattice of G .

On obstructions to the Euler system method for Rankin-Selberg convolutions

Abstract:To apply the Euler system method to a $p$-adic Galois representation $T$, one needs the existence of a $\sigma \in G_{\mathbb{Q}(\mu_{p^{\infty}})}$ such that $V/(\sigma-1)V$ is free of rank one over the coefficient ring: we say that such a $\sigma$ is an Euler-suitable element for $V$. Given a non-CM classical newform $f$ of weight $k \geq 2$ and character $\chi$, a classical newform $g$ of weight $1$ and character $\psi$, and a prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ of residue characteristic $p$ of a sufficiently large number field, we consider the situation where $V=V_{f,g,\mathfrak{p}}$ is the tensor product of the $\mathfrak{p}$-adic representations attached to $f$ and $g$. D. Loeffler asked the following question: is is true that if $\chi\psi \neq 1$, then there is an Euler-suitable element for $V_{f,g,\mathfrak{p}}$ for all but finitely many $\mathfrak{p}$? He gave a positive answer when $f,g$ had coprime conductors. We give several weaker sufficient conditions to answer this question in the affirmative. Abstract:In this paper, we employ the framework of localization algebras to compute the equivariant K-homology class of the Euler characteristic operator, a central object in studying equivariant index theory on manifolds. This approach provides a powerful algebraic language for analyzing differential operators on equivariant structures and allows for the application of Witten deformation techniques in a K-homological context. Utilizing these results, we establish an equivariant version of the Poincaré-Hopf theorem, extending classical topological insights to the equivariant case, inspired by the results of Lück-Rosenberg. This work thus offers a new perspective on the localization techniques in the equivariant K-homology, highlighting their utility in deriving explicit formulas for index-theoretic invariants.

Eisenstein congruences among Euler systems

Abstract:We investigate Eisenstein congruences between the so-called Euler systems of Garrett--Rankin--Selberg type. This includes the cohomology classes of Beilinson--Kato, Beilinson--Flach and diagonal cycles. The proofs crucially rely on different known versions of the Bloch--Kato conjecture, and are based on the study of the Perrin-Riou formalism and the comparison between the different $p$-adic $L$-functions.

Abstract:We develop a general method for computing the homological Euler characteristic of finite index subgroups G of GL_m(O_K) where O_K is the ring of integers in a number field K. With this method we find, that for large, explicitly computed dimensions m, the homological Euler characteristic of finite index subgroups of GL_m(O_K) vanishes. For other cases, some of them very important for spaces of multiple polylogarithms, we compute non-zero homological Euler characteristic. With the same method we find all the torsion elements in GL_3(Z) up to conjugation. Finally, our method allows us to obtain a formula for the Dedekind zeta function at -1 in terms of the ideal class set and the multiplicative group of quadratic extensions of the base ring.
