Abstract:We discuss some consequences Fintushel-Stern `knot surgery' operation on 4-manifolds coming from its handlebody description. We give some generalizations of this operation and give a counterexample to their conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper we clarify an issue in the knot surgery construction of Fintushel and Stern. Using knot surgery, they construct an infinite number of smooth structures on 4-manifolds satisfying certain conditions, but they do not explicitly work out the circumstances under which two manifolds that arise from their construction will fail to be diffeomorphic on the grounds of Seiberg-Witten theory. This paper fills in that gap.

Abstract:One strategy for distinguishing smooth structures on closed $4$-manifolds is to produce a knot $K$ in $S^3$ that is slice in one smooth filling $W$ of $S^3$ but not slice in some homeomorphic smooth filling $W'$. In this paper we explore how $0$-surgery homeomorphisms can be used to potentially construct exotic pairs of this form. In order to systematically generate a plethora of candidates for exotic pairs, we give a fully general construction of pairs of knots with the same zero surgeries. By computer experimentation, we find $5$ topologically slice knots such that, if any of them were slice, we would obtain an exotic four-sphere. We also investigate the possibility of constructing exotic smooth structures on $\#^n \mathbb{C}P^2$ in a similar fashion.

Abstract:We compute the Lagrangian Floer cohomology groups of certain tori in closed simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds arising from Fintushel-Stern knot surgery. These manifolds are usually not symplectically aspherical. As a result of the computation we observe examples where $HF(L_0)\cong HF(L_1)$ and $L_0$ and $L_1$ are smoothly isotopic but $L_0,L_1$ are not symplectically isotopic and are distinguished by $HF(L_0,L_1)$.

Abstract:A crown diagram of a smooth, closed oriented 4-manifold can be thought of as the projection of a link in the product of a closed surface and the circle, with chords in the circle direction connecting the strands of each crossing. This paper uses a straightforward assignment of integers to these chords to show that the smooth structures on the topological 4-manifold underlying a pair of Fintushel-Stern knot surgery 4-manifolds which are known to have the same Seiberg-Witten invariant are not isotopic. A natural question is to determine if the argument may be strengthened to show these manifolds are not diffeomorphic.

Abstract:The construction of knots via annular twisting has been used to create families of knots yielding the same manifold via Dehn surgery. Prior examples have all involved Dehn surgery where the surgery slope is an integral multiple of 2. In this note we prove that for any integer $n$ there exist infinitely many different knots in $S^3$ such that $n$-surgery on those knots yields the same manifold. In particular, when $|n|=1$ homology spheres arise from these surgeries. In addition, when $n \neq 0$ the bridge numbers of the knots constructed tend to infinity as the number of twists along the annulus increases.

Handle numbers of guts of sutured manifolds and nearly fibered knots

Abstract:Extending Haken's Theorem to product annuli and disks for Heegaard splittings of sutured manifolds, we show that the handle number of an irreducible sutured manifold equals the handle number of its guts. We further show that reduced sutured manifolds with torus boundary contained in $S^3$ fall in to three types that generalize the three models of guts of knots that are nearly fibered in the instanton or Heegaard Floer sense. In conjunction with these results and another concerning uniqueness of incompressible Seifert surfaces, we show that while many nearly fibered knots have handle number $2$ and a unique incompressible Seifert surface, some have handle number $4$ and others have extra incompressible Seifert surfaces. Examples of nearly fibered knots with non-isotopic incompressible Seifert surfaces are exhibited.

Abstract:Abstract We study closed connected orientable 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery along the oriented components of a link, introduced and considered by Motegi and Song (2005) and Ichihara et al. (2008). For such manifolds, we find a finite balanced group presentation of the fundamental group and describe exceptional surgeries. This allows us to construct an infinite family of tunnel number one strongly invertible hyperbolic knots with three parameters, which admit toroidal surgeries and Seifert fibered surgeries. Among the obtained results, we mention that for every integer $$n >5$$ n > 5 there are infinitely many hyperbolic knots in the 3–sphere, whose $$(n-2)$$ ( n - 2 ) and $$(n+1)$$ ( n + 1 ) -surgeries are toroidal, and $$(n-1)$$ ( n - 1 ) and n -surgeries are Seifert fibered.

Abstract:In this article, we give new means of constructing and distinguishing closed exotic four-manifolds. Using Heegaard Floer homology, we define new closed four-manifold invariants that are distinct from the Seiberg--Witten and Bauer--Furuta invariants and can remain distinct in covers. Our constructions include exotic definite manifolds with fundamental group $\mathbb Z/2$, infinite families of exotic manifolds that are related by knot surgeries on Alexander polynomial 1 knots, and exotic manifolds that contain square-zero spheres.

Abstract:We show that a special alternating knot with sufficiently large number (more than $63$) of twist regions has no chirally cosmetic surgeries, a pair of Dehn surgeries producing orientation-reversingly homeomorphic $3$-manifolds. In the course of proof, we provide the optimal upper bounds of the primitive finite type invariants of degree 2 and 3 that solve Willerton's conjecture.

Abstract:If a knot $K$ in $S^3$ admits a pair of truly cosmetic surgeries, we show that the surgery slopes are either $\pm 2$ or $\pm 1/q$ for some value of $q$ that is explicitly determined by the knot Floer homology of $K$. Moreover, in the former case the genus of $K$ must be two, and in the latter case there is bound relating $q$ to the genus and the Heegaard Floer thickness of $K$. As a consequence, we show that the cosmetic crossing conjecture holds for alternating knots (or more generally, Heegaard Floer thin knots) with genus not equal to two. We also show that the conjecture holds for any knot $K$ for which each prime summand of $K$ has at most 16 crossings; our techniques rule out cosmetic surgeries in this setting except for slopes $\pm 1$ and $\pm 2$ on a small number of knots, and these remaining examples can be checked by comparing hyperbolic invariants. These results make use of the surgery formula for Heegaard Floer homology, which has already proved to be a powerful tool for obstructing cosmetic surgeries; we get stronger obstructions than previously known by considering the full graded theory. We make use of a new graphical interpretation of knot Floer homology and the surgery formula in terms of immersed curves, which makes the grading information we need easier to access.

Abstract:We provide new examples of 3-manifolds with weight one fundamental group and the same integral homology as the lens space $L(2k,1)$ which are not surgery on any knot in the three-sphere. Our argument uses Furuta's 10/8-theorem, and is simple and combinatorial to apply.

Taut foliations from knot diagrams

Abstract:We prove that if a knot $K$ has a particular type of diagram then all non-trivial surgeries on $K$ contain a coorientable taut foliation. Knots admitting such diagrams include many two-bridge knots, many pretzel knots, many Montesinos knots and more generally all arborescent knots defined by weighted planar trees with more than one vertex such that $1)$ all weights have absolute value greater than one, and $2)$ there exists a weight with absolute value greater than two. The ideas involved in the proof can also be adapted to study surgeries on links and as an application we show that for all surgeries $M$ on the Borromean link it holds that $M$ is not an $L$-space if and only if $M$ contains a coorientable taut foliation.

Abstract:A surgery on a knot in 3-sphere is called SU(2)-cyclic if it gives a manifold whose fundamental group has no non-cyclic SU(2) representations. Using holonomy perturbations on the Chern-Simons functional, we prove that the distance of two SU(2)-cyclic surgery coefficients is bounded by the sum of the absolute values of their numerators. This is an analog of Culler-Gordon-Luecke-Shalen's cyclic surgery theorem.

Abstract:In this article, we show that, at least for non-simply connected case, there exist an infinite family of nondiffeomorphic symplectic 4-manifolds with the same Seiberg-Witten invariants. The main techniques are knot surgery and a covering method developed in Fintushel and Stern's paper (Geometry and Topology, 1999).

Abstract:Two Dehn surgeries on a knot are called cosmetic if they yield homeomorphic three-manifolds. We show for a certain family of null-homologous knots in any closed orientable three-manifold, if the knot admits cosmetic surgeries with a pair of positive surgery coefficients, then the coefficients are both greater than $1$. In addition, for this family of knots, we show that $1/q$ Dehn surgery for $q$ at least $2$ is not homeomorphic to the original three-manifold. The proofs of these results use the mapping cone formula for the Heegaard Floer homology of Dehn surgery in terms of the knot Floer homology of the knot; we provide a new proof of this formula for integer surgeries in $\text{Spin}^c$ structures with nontorsion first Chern class.

Abstract:These notes are based on the lectures given by the author during Winter Braids IX in Reims in March 2019. We discuss slice knots and why they are interesting, as well as some ways to decide if a given knot is or is not slice. We describe various methods for drawing diagrams of double branched covers of knots in the 3-sphere and surfaces in the 4-ball, and how these can be useful to decide if an alternating knot is slice. We include a description of the computer search for slice alternating knots due to the author and Frank Swenton.

Abstract:This article is concerned with locally flatly immersed surfaces in simply-connected $4$-manifolds where the complement of the surface has fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$. Once the genus and number of double points are fixed, we classify such immersed surfaces in terms of the equivariant intersection form of their exterior and a secondary invariant. Applications include criteria for deciding when an immersed $\mathbb{Z}$-surface in $S^4$ is isotopic to the standard immersed surface that is obtained from an unknotted surface by adding local double points. As another application, we enumerate $\mathbb{Z}$-disks in $D^4$ with a single double point and boundary a given knot; we prove that the number of such disks may be infinite. We also prove that a knot bounds a $\mathbb{Z}$-disk in $D^4$ with $c_+$ positive double points and $c_-$ negative double points if and only if it can be converted into an Alexander polynomial one knot via changing $c_+$ positive crossings and $c_-$ negative crossings. In $4$-manifolds other than $D^4$ and $S^4$, applications include measuring the extent to which immersed $\mathbb{Z}$-surfaces are determined by the equivariant intersection form of their exterior. Along the way, we prove that any two $\mathbb{Z}^2$-concordances between the Hopf link and an Alexander polynomial one link $L$ are homeomorphic rel. boundary.

Abstract:We prove a surgery formula and an excision formula for the Furuta-Ohta invariant $\lambda_{FO}$ defined on homology $S^1 \times S^3$, which provides more evidence on its equivalence with the Casson-Seiberg-Witten invariant $\lambda_{SW}$. These formulae are applied to compute $\lambda_{FO}$ of certain families of manifolds obtained as mapping tori under diffeomorphisms of $3$-manifolds. In the course of the proof, we give a complete description of the degree-zero moduli space of ASD instantons on $4$-manifolds of homology $H_*(D^2 \times T^2; \mathbb{Z})$ with a cylindrical end modeled on $[0, \infty) \times T^3$.
