Abstract:Context. The Hertzsprung-Russell diagram is an essential diagnostic diagram for stellar structure and evolution, which has now been in use for more than 100 years. Aims. We introduce a new diagram based on the gravity-effective temperature diagram, which has various advantages. Methods. Our spectroscopic Hertzsprung-Russell (sHR) diagram shows the inverse of the flux-mean gravity versus the effective temperature. Observed stars whose spectra have been quantitatively analyzed can be entered in this diagram without the knowledge of the stellar distance or absolute brightness. Results. Observed stars can be as conveniently compared to stellar evolution calculations in the sHR diagram as in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. However, at the same time, our ordinate is proportional to the stellar mass-to-luminosity ratio, which can thus be directly determined. For intermediate- and low-mass star evolution at constant mass, we show that the shape of an evolutionary track in the sHR diagram is identical to that in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We also demonstrate that for hot stars, their stellar Eddington factor can be directly read off the sHR diagram. For stars near their Eddington limit, we argue that a version of the sHR diagram may be useful where the gravity is exchanged by the effective gravity. Conclusions. We discuss the advantages and limitations of the sHR diagram, and show that it can be fruitfully applied to Galactic stars, but also to stars with known distance, e.g., in the LMC or in galaxies beyond the Local Group.

Upper boundaries of AGN regions in optical diagnostic diagrams

Abstract:The distribution of galaxies in optical diagnostic diagrams can provide information about their physical parameters when compared with ionization models under proper assumptions. By using a sample of central emitting regions from the MaNGA survey, we find evidence of the existence of upper boundaries for narrow-line regions (NLRs) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in optical BPT diagrams, especially in the diagrams involving [S II]$\lambda \lambda$6716, 6731/H$\alpha$. Photoionization models can well reproduce the boundaries as a consequence of the decrease of [S II]$\lambda \lambda$6716, 6731/H$\alpha$ and [O III]$\lambda$5007/H$\beta$ ratios at very high metallicity. Whilst the exact location of the upper boundary in the [S II] BPT diagram only weakly depends on the electron density of the ionized cloud and the secondary nitrogen prescription, its dependence on the shapes of the input SEDs is much stronger. This allows us to constrain the power-law index of the AGN SED between 1 Ryd and $\sim100$ Ryd to be less than or equal to $-1.40\pm 0.05$. The coverage of the photoionization models in the [N II] BPT diagram has a stronger dependence on the electron density and the secondary nitrogen prescription. With the density constrained by the [S II] doublet ratio and the input SED constrained by the [S II] BPT diagram, we find that the extent of the data in the [N II] BPT diagram favors those prescriptions with high N/O ratios. Although shock-ionized cloud can produce similar line ratios as those by photoionization, the resulting shapes of the upper boundaries, if exist, would likely be different from those of a photoionizing origin.

AGN-starburst evolutionary connection : a physical interpretation based on radiative feedback

Abstract:Observations point towards a close connection between nuclear starbursts, active galactic nuclei (AGN), and outflow phenomena. An evolutionary sequence, starting from a dust-obscured ultra-luminous infrared galaxy and eventually leading to an unobscured optical quasar, has been proposed and discussed in the literature. AGN feedback is usually invoked to expel the obscuring gas and dust in a blow-out event, but the underlying physical mechanism remains unclear. We consider AGN feedback driven by radiation pressure on dust, which directly acts on the obscuring dusty gas. We obtain that radiative feedback can potentially disrupt dense gas in the infrared-optically thick regime, and that an increase in the dust-to-gas fraction leads to an increase in the effective Eddington ratio. Thus the more dusty gas is preferentially expelled by radiative feedback, and the central AGN is prone to efficiently remove its own obscuring dust cocoon. Large amounts of dust imply heavy obscuration but also powerful feedback, suggesting a causal link between dust obscuration and blow-out. In this picture, AGN feedback and starburst phenomena are intrinsically coupled through the production of dust in supernova explosions, leading to a natural interpretation of the observed evolutionary path.

Are Active Galactic Nuclei in Post-Starburst Galaxies Driving the Change or Along for the Ride?

Abstract:We present an analysis of 10 ks snapshot Chandra observations of 12 shocked post-starburst galaxies, which provide a window into the unresolved question of active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity in post-starburst galaxies and its role in the transition of galaxies from actively star forming to quiescence. While 7/12 galaxies have statistically significant detections (with 2 more marginal detections), the brightest only obtained 10 photons. Given the wide variety of hardness ratios in this sample, we chose to pursue a forward modeling approach to constrain the intrinsic luminosity and obscuration of these galaxies rather than stacking. We constrain intrinsic luminosity of obscured power-laws based on the total number of counts and spectral shape, itself mostly set by the obscuration, with hardness ratios consistent with the data. We also tested thermal models. While all the galaxies have power-law models consistent with their observations, a third of the galaxies are better fit as an obscured power-law and another third are better fit as thermal emission. If these post-starburst galaxies, early in their transition, contain AGN, then these are mostly confined to a lower obscuration ($n_H \leq10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$) and lower luminosity ($L_{2-10~ \rm keV}\leq10^{42}$erg s$^{-1}$). Two galaxies, however, are clearly best fit as significantly obscured AGN. At least half of this sample show evidence of at least low luminosity AGN activity, though none could radiatively drive out the remaining molecular gas reservoirs. Therefore, these AGN are more likely along for the ride, having been fed gas by the same processes driving the transition.

AGN's Deadness Over Cosmic Time: UVJ Diagrams of X-Ray-Selected AGN

Abstract:Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are intensely accreting supermassive black holes at the centers of massive galaxies. Though these objects occupy little spatial extent of the galaxy itself, they are thought to have far reaching affects, impacting the galaxy's star formation, and possibly it's lifespan until it becomes 'red and dead'. Typical galaxies demonstrate that, over cosmic time, they tend to separate into a bimodal distribution of 'red and dead' or blue and star forming. We examine whether active galaxies evolve over cosmic time in a similar way, and whether this can reveal anything about the complexities of the relationship between an AGN and the host galaxy. We use the Stripe82X survey to identify 3940 X-ray AGN spanning z=0-2.5, and we measure the rest-frame UVJ colors of each galaxy. We classify AGN as star-forming or quiescent based on their location in a UVJ color diagram. We find that there is not a clear bimodal distribution between AGN in star forming and quiescent galaxies. Furthermore, the most luminous X-ray sources tend to lie in the star forming region, which may indicate a correlation between central engine activity and increased rates of star formation.

Properties of dusty tori in active galactic nuclei - II. Type 2 AGN

Abstract:(abridged) This paper is the second part of a work investigating the properties of dusty tori in AGN by means of multi-component SED fitting. It focuses on low luminosity, low redshift (z < 0.25) AGN selected among emission line galaxies as well as X-ray, radio and mid-infrared selected type 2 AGN samples from the literature. The available multi-band photometry covers the spectral range from the u-band up to 160 um. The observed SED of each object is fit to a set of multi-component models comprising a stellar component, a high optical depth torus and cold emission from a starburst (SB). The contribution of the various components (stars, torus, SB) is reflected in the position of the objects on the IRAC colour diagram. The comparison of type 1 (as derived from Hatziminaoglou et al. 2008) and type 2 AGN properties is broadly consistent with the Unified Scheme. The estimated ratio between type 2 and type 1 objects is about 2-2.5:1. The AGN accretion-to-infrared luminosity ratio is an indicator of the obscuration of the AGN since it scales down with the covering factor. We find evidence supporting the receding torus paradigm, with the estimated fraction of obscured AGN decreasing with increasing optical luminosity over four orders of magnitude. The average star formation rates are of ~ 10, 40 and 115 Mo/yr for the low-z, type 2 and quasar samples, respectively; but this might simply reflect observational biases, as our quasars are one to two orders of magnitude more luminous than the type 2 AGN. For the majority of objects with 70 and/or 160 um detections an SB component was needed in order to reproduce the data points, implying that the far-infrared emission in AGN arises mostly from star formation; moreover, the SB-to-AGN luminosity ratio shows a slight trend with increasing luminosity.

Abstract:Since the discovery of quasars and other types of active galactic nuclei (AGN) various theoretical models have been proposed to explain the characteristics of these exceptional astronomical objects. Among their extreme properties are maximum luminosities exceeding 1047 erg/s, generated on very small spatial scales (less than 1 pc), the non-thermal continuum emission, polarization, the variability on short time scales and the occurrence of relativistic jets (for an overview compare e.g. Netzer 1989). As primary energy source was suggested (Lynden-Bell 1969, Hills 1975) the liberation of gravitational binding energy by accretion and dissipative processes in the vicinity of a supermassive black hole. Such a model is at least for the most luminous sources now widely accepted as a standard model (Rees 1984, Netzer 1990). One should note, however, that this standard model still poses some outstanding and serious questions; these are for example its wrong predictions for the Lyman-α to Hβ line ratios and for the FeII line intensities (see Netzer 1989 and references therein).
The Accretion History of AGN: The Spectral Energy Distributions of X-ray Luminous AGN

Abstract:Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from X-ray to far-infrared (FIR) wavelengths are presented for a sample of 1246 X-ray luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN; $L_{0.5-10\rm{keV}}>10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$), with $z_{\rm{spec}}<1.2$, selected from Stripe 82X, COSMOS, and GOODS-N/S. The rest-frame SEDs show a wide spread ($\sim2.5$ dex) in the relative strengths of broad continuum features at X-ray, ultraviolet (UV), mid-infrared (MIR), and FIR wavelengths. A linear correlation (log-log slope of 0.7$\pm0.04$) is found between $L_{\rm{MIR}}$ and $L_{\rm{X}}$. There is significant scatter in the relation between the $L_{\rm{UV}}$ and $L_{\rm{X}}$ due to heavy obscuration, however the most luminous and unobscured AGN show a linear correlation (log-log slope of 0.8$\pm0.06$) in the relation above this scatter. The relation between $L_{\rm{FIR}}$ and $L_{\rm{X}}$ is predominantly flat, but with decreasing dispersion at $L_{\rm{X}}>10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The ratio between the "galaxy subtracted" bolometric luminosity and the intrinsic $L_{\rm{X}}$ increases from a factor of $\sim$$10-70$ from log $L_{\rm{bol}}/{\rm(erg\; s}^{-1})=44.5-46.5$. Characteristic SED shapes have been determined by grouping AGN based on relative strengths of the UV and MIR emission. The average $L_{1\mu\rm{m}}$ is constant for the majority of these SED shapes, while AGN with the strongest UV and MIR emission have elevated $L_{1\mu\rm{m}}$, consistent with the AGN emission dominating their SEDs at optical and NIR wavelengths. A strong correlation is found between the SED shape and both the $L_{\rm{X}}$ and $L_{\rm{bol}}$, such that $L_{\rm{bol}}/L_{\rm{X}}=20.4\pm1.8$, independent of the SED shape. This is consistent with an evolutionary scenario of increasing $L_{\rm{bol}}$ with decreasing obscuration as the AGN blows away circumnuclear gas.

A Possible Evolutionary Connection between AGN and Starburst in LINERs

Abstract:Our analysis on the two magnitude-limited samples of LINERs suggests a correlation between $L_{\FIR}/L_{\B}$ or f(25\micron)/f(60\micron), and Hubble-type index at $>$99.99% significance level. As $L_{\FIR}/L_{\B}$ and f(25\micron)/f(60\micron) are considered as the indicators of star-formation activity and AGN activity, respectively, our result suggests that LINERs with higher AGN activity may have a lower star-formation contribution. The ones with highest AGN activity and lowest star-formation contributions are ellipticals. All well-studied LINER 1s belong to this group. On the other hand, LINERs with higher star-formation activity present lower AGN contributions. We find all well-studied LINER 2s in this parameter space. Most of LINERs having inner ring structures belong to this group. Statistics with other indicators of star-formation or AGN activity (nulear mass-to-light ratio at H band, and the ratio of X-ray-to-UV power) provide further evidence for such a trend. We have seen that along with the evolution of galaxies from late-type spirals to early-type ones, and up to ellipticals, the intensity of AGN activity increases with decreasing star-formation contributions, The above analyses may suggest a possible connection between the host galaxies and nuclear activities, and it might also indicate a possible evolutionary connection between AGN and starburst in LINERs.

Galaxy gas as obscurer: II. Separating the galaxy-scale and nuclear obscurers of Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract:The "torus" obscurer of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is poorly understood in terms of its density, substructure and physical mechanisms. Large X-ray surveys provide model boundary constraints, for both Compton-thin and Compton-thick levels of obscuration, as obscured fractions are mean covering factors $f_{\text{cov}}$. However, a major remaining uncertainty is host galaxy obscuration. In Paper I we discovered a relation of $N_H \propto M_{\star}^{1/3}$ for the obscuration of galaxy-scale gas. Here we apply this observational relation to the AGN population, and find that galaxy-scale gas is responsible for a luminosity-independent fraction of Compton-thin AGN, but does not produce Compton-thick columns. With the host galaxy obscuration understood, we present a model of the remaining, nuclear obscurer which is consistent with a range of observations. Our radiation-lifted torus model consists of a Compton-thick component ($f_{\text{cov}}\sim35\%$) and a Compton-thin component ($f_{\text{cov}}\sim40\%$), which depends on both black hole mass and luminosity. This provides a useful summary of observational constraints for torus modellers who attempt to reproduce this behaviour. It can also be employed as a sub-grid recipe in cosmological simulations which do not resolve the torus. We also investigate host-galaxy X-ray obscuration inside cosmological, hydro-dynamic simulations (EAGLE, Illustris). The obscuration from ray-traced galaxy gas can agree with observations, but is highly sensitive to the chosen feedback assumptions.

Extinction curves in AGN

Abstract:The presence of the dust in the circumnuclear region strongly affects our view of the nucleus itself. The effect is strong in type 2 objects but weaker effect is likely to be present in type 1 objects as well. In these objects a correction to the observed optical/UV spectrum must be done in order to recover the intrinsic spectrum of a nucleus. The approach based on the extinction curve is convenient for that purpose so significant effort has been recently done in order to determine the extinction curve for the circumnuclear material. It seems clear that the circumnuclear dust is different from the average properties of the dust in the Interstellar Medium in our galaxy: the well known 2175 A feature is weak or absent in AGN nuclear dust, and the extinction curve at shorter wavelength does not seem to be rising as steeply. The circumnuclear dust is therefore more similar to SMC dust, or more likely, to the dust in very dense molecular clouds in our Galaxy. However, the exact shape of the extinction curve in the far UV is still a matter of debate, and various effects are difficult to disentangle.

Abstract:We use Vaschy-Buckhingham Theorem as a systematic tool to build univocal n-dimensional extensions of the electric and gravitational fine structure constants and show that their ratio is dimensionally invariant. The results allow us to obtain the relative standard uncertainty on the three-dimensionality of space as 1.08 $10^{-13}$.

Abstract:The distribution of stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram narrates their evolutionary history and directly assesses their properties. Placing stars in this diagram however requires the knowledge of their distances and interstellar extinctions, which are often poorly known for Galactic stars. The spectroscopic Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (sHRD) tells similar evolutionary tales, but is independent of distance and extinction measurements. Based on spectroscopically derived effective temperatures and gravities of almost 600 stars, we derive for the first time the observational distribution of Galactic massive stars in the sHRD. While biases and statistical limitations in the data prevent detailed quantitative conclusions at this time, we see several clear qualitative trends. By comparing the observational sHRD with different state-of-the-art stellar evolutionary predictions, we conclude that convective core overshooting may be mass-dependent and, at high mass (≳15 M⊙), stronger than previously thought. Furthermore, we find evidence for an empirical upper limit in the sHRD for stars with Teff between 10 000 and 32 000 K and, a strikingly large number of objects below this line. This over-density may be due to inflation expanding envelopes in massive main-sequence stars near the Eddington limit.

The obscured circumnuclear region of NGC 3079

Abstract:Images in the J, H and K bands and in the the v=1-0 S(1) line of H2 of the central region of the almost edge-on galaxy NGC 3079 reveal contributions from direct and scattered starlight, emission from hot dust and molecular gas, and extinction gradients. The central 100 pc suffers an extinction of 6 mag. Extremely red near-infrared colours require the presence of hot dust at about 1000 K. Less reddened parts of the bulge require either a 20% J-band contribution from young stars in a stellar bar, or a 20-30% contribution from scattered stellar light. The nucleus is surrounded by a dense molecular disk of radius 300 pc. Emission from H2 and hot dust traces a cavity of radius 120 pc. In the central few hundred pc, HI spin temperatures must be less than 275 K and the CO-to_H2 conversion factor is at most 5% of the standard Galactic value. This is consistent with theoretical predictions for environments subjected to dissociative shocks, where reformation of H2 is impeded by high dust grain temperatures. The overall molecular gas content of NGC 3079 is normal for a late-type galaxy.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Determinations of the ultraviolet (UV) luminosity function of active galactic nuclei (AGN) at high redshifts are important for constraining the AGN contribution to reionization and understanding the growth of supermassive black holes. Recent inferences of the luminosity function suffer from inconsistencies arising from inhomogeneous selection and analysis of data. We address this problem by constructing a sample of more than 80 000 colour-selected AGN from redshift $z$ = 0 to 7.5 using multiple data sets homogenized to identical cosmologies, intrinsic AGN spectra, and magnitude systems. Using this sample, we derive the AGN UV luminosity function from redshift $z$ = 0 to 7.5. The luminosity function has a double power-law form at all redshifts. The break magnitude M* shows a steep brightening from M* ∼ −24 at $z$ = 0.7 to M* ∼ −29 at $z$ = 6. The faint-end slope β significantly steepens from −1.9 at $z$ < 2.2 to −2.4 at $z$ ≃ 6. In spite of this steepening, the contribution of AGN to the hydrogen photoionization rate at $z$ ∼ 6 is subdominant (<3 per cent), although it can be non-negligible (∼10 per cent) if these luminosity functions hold down to M1450 = −18. Under reasonable assumptions, AGN can reionize He ii by redshift $z$ = 2.9. At low redshifts ($z$ < 0.5), AGN can produce about half of the hydrogen photoionization rate inferred from the statistics of H i absorption lines in the intergalactic medium. Our analysis also reveals important systematic errors in the data, which need to be addressed and incorporated in the AGN selection function in future in order to improve our results. We make various fitting functions, codes, and data publicly available.

The Diagnostics and Possible Evolution in Active Galactic Nuclei Associated With Starburst Galaxies

Abstract:We present a large sample which contains 45 Seyfert 1 galaxies (Sy1s), 46 hidden broad-line region (HBLR) Seyfert 2 galaxies (Sy2s), 57 non-HBLR Sy2s, and 22 starburst galaxies to distinguish their properties and to seek the possible evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and starburst galaxies. We show that (1) using a plot of [O III] ł5007/H/alpha versus [N II] ł6584/H/alpha of standard optical spectral diagnostic diagrams, we find that a equation can separate well non-HBLR Sy2s and HBLR Sy2s; (2) the emission-line ratios and both the combination of the ratios and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) strength are utilized effectively to separate starburst galaxies and Seyfert galaxies; (3) we compare a number of quantities from the data and confirm well the separations with statistics; (4) on the basis of statistics, we suggest that HBLR Sy2s may be the counterparts of Sy1s at edge-on orientation. In addition, we discuss the possibility of starburst galaxies evolving to non-HBLR Sy2s and HBLR Sy2s and then evolving to Sy1s based on the statistical analysis.

Abstract:As a result of deep hard X-ray observations by Chandra and XMM-Newton a significant fraction of the cosmic X-ray background (CXRB) has been resolved into individual sources. These objects are almost all active galactic nuclei (AGN) and optical followup observations find that they are mostly obscured Type 2 AGN, have Seyfert-like X-ray luminosities (i.e., L_X ~ 10^{43-44} ergs s^{-1}), and peak in redshift at z~0.7. Since this redshift is similar to the peak in the cosmic star-formation rate, this paper proposes that the obscuring material required for AGN unification is regulated by star-formation within the host galaxy. We test this idea by computing CXRB synthesis models with a ratio of Type 2/Type 1 AGN that is a function of both z and 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity, L_X. The evolutionary models are constrained by parameterizing the observed Type 1 AGN fractions from the recent work by Barger et al. The parameterization which simultaneously best accounts for Barger's data, the CXRB spectrum and the X-ray number counts has a local, low-L_X Type 2/Type 1 ratio of 4, and predicts a Type 2 AGN fraction which evolves as (1+z)^{0.3}. Models with no redshift evolution yielded much poorer fits to the Barger Type 1 AGN fractions. This particular evolution predicts a Type 2/Type 1 ratio of 1-2 for log L_X > 44, and thus the deep X-ray surveys are missing about half the obscured AGN with these luminosities. These objects are likely to be Compton thick. Overall, these calculations show that the current data strongly supports a change to the AGN unification scenario where the obscuration is connected with star formation in the host galaxy rather than a molecular torus alone. The evolution of the obscuration implies a close relationship between star formation and AGN fueling, most likely due to minor mergers or interactions.

The Shape of the Cosmic X-ray Background: Nuclear Starburst Discs and the Redshift Evolution of AGN Obscuration

Abstract:A significant number of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are observed to be hidden behind dust and gas. The distribution of material around AGNs plays an important role in modeling the cosmic X-ray background (CXB), especially the fraction of Type-2 AGNs ($f_2$). One of the possible explanations for the obscuration in Seyfert galaxies at intermediate redshift is dusty starburst discs. We compute the 2D hydrostatic structure of 768 nuclear starburst discs (NSDs) under various physical conditions and also the distribution of column density along the line of sight ($N_{\text{H}}$) associated with these discs. Then, the $N_{\text{H}}$ distribution is evolved with redshift by using the redshift dependent distribution function of input parameters. The $f_2$ shows a strong positive evolution up to $z=2$, but only a weak level of enhancement at higher $z$. The Compton-thin and Compton-thick AGN fractions associated with these starburst regions increase as $\propto (1+z)^{\delta}$ where the $\delta$ is estimated to be 1.12 and 1.45, respectively. The reflection parameter $R_f$ associated with column density $N_{\text{H}} \geq 10^{23.5}$ cm$^{-2}$ extends from 0.13 at $z=0$ to 0.58 at $z=4$. A CXB model employing this evolving $N_{\text{H}}$ distribution indicates more compact ($R_{\text{out}}<120$ pc) NSDs provide a better fit to the CXB. In addition to "Seyfert-like" AGNs obscured by nuclear starbursts, we predict that 40 to 60 per cent of quasars must be Compton-thick to produce the peak of the CXB spectrum within observational uncertainty. The predicted total number counts of AGNs in 8-24 keV band are in fair agreement with observations from NuSTAR.

Abstract:We analyze a sample of 30,000 nearby obscured AGNs with optical spectra from SDSS and mid-IR photometry from WISE. Our aim is to investigate the AGN host galaxy properties with mid-IR luminosities as AGN activity indicator, and to compare with previous studies based on [OIII] emission lines. First we find that the [3.4] - [4.6] colour has weak dependence on host stellar age, but strong dependence on AGN activity. We then use a "pair-matching" technique to subtract the host 4.6 micron contribution. By combining Seyferts with a sample of SDSS quasars at z < 0.7, we show that the [OIII] and the intrinsic AGN 4.6 micron luminosities correlate roughly linearly over 4 orders of magnitude, but with substantial scatter. We also compare the partition functions of the total integrated 4.6 micron and [OIII] line luminosities from Seyferts and a sub-population of LINERs with significant nuclear 4.6 micron emission, as function of a variety of host galaxy properties, finding that they are identical. We conclude, therefore, that [OIII] as an AGN indicator shows no particular biases as compared to the 4.6 micron luminosity. Our results also demonstrate that some LINERs do fit in with the expectations of the simple Unified Model.
