Abstract:Spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from X-ray to far-infrared (FIR) wavelengths are presented for a sample of 1246 X-ray luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN; $L_{0.5-10\rm{keV}}>10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$), with $z_{\rm{spec}}<1.2$, selected from Stripe 82X, COSMOS, and GOODS-N/S. The rest-frame SEDs show a wide spread ($\sim2.5$ dex) in the relative strengths of broad continuum features at X-ray, ultraviolet (UV), mid-infrared (MIR), and FIR wavelengths. A linear correlation (log-log slope of 0.7$\pm0.04$) is found between $L_{\rm{MIR}}$ and $L_{\rm{X}}$. There is significant scatter in the relation between the $L_{\rm{UV}}$ and $L_{\rm{X}}$ due to heavy obscuration, however the most luminous and unobscured AGN show a linear correlation (log-log slope of 0.8$\pm0.06$) in the relation above this scatter. The relation between $L_{\rm{FIR}}$ and $L_{\rm{X}}$ is predominantly flat, but with decreasing dispersion at $L_{\rm{X}}>10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The ratio between the "galaxy subtracted" bolometric luminosity and the intrinsic $L_{\rm{X}}$ increases from a factor of $\sim$$10-70$ from log $L_{\rm{bol}}/{\rm(erg\; s}^{-1})=44.5-46.5$. Characteristic SED shapes have been determined by grouping AGN based on relative strengths of the UV and MIR emission. The average $L_{1\mu\rm{m}}$ is constant for the majority of these SED shapes, while AGN with the strongest UV and MIR emission have elevated $L_{1\mu\rm{m}}$, consistent with the AGN emission dominating their SEDs at optical and NIR wavelengths. A strong correlation is found between the SED shape and both the $L_{\rm{X}}$ and $L_{\rm{bol}}$, such that $L_{\rm{bol}}/L_{\rm{X}}=20.4\pm1.8$, independent of the SED shape. This is consistent with an evolutionary scenario of increasing $L_{\rm{bol}}$ with decreasing obscuration as the AGN blows away circumnuclear gas.

Starbursts in Barred Spiral Galaxies. III. Definition of a homogeneous sample of Starburst Nucleus Galaxies

Abstract:This paper presents optical long-slit spectroscopic observations of 105 barred Markarian IRAS galaxies. These observations are used to determine the spectral type of emission-line regions in the nucleus and along the bar of the galaxies, in order to define a homogeneous sample of Starburst Nucleus Galaxies (SBNGs). Our selection criteria have been very efficient for selecting star-forming galaxies, since our sample of 221 emission-line regions includes 82% nuclear or extranuclear starbursts. The contamination by Seyferts is low (9%). The remaining galaxies (9%) are objects with ambiguous classification (HII or LINER). The dust content and Halpha luminosity increase towards the nuclei of the galaxies. No significant variation of the electron density is found between nuclear and bar HII regions. However, the mean Halpha luminosity and electron density in the bar are higher than in typical disk HII regions. We investigate different mechanisms for explaining the excess of nitrogen emission observed in our starburst nuclei. There is no evidence for the presence of a weak hidden active galactic nucleus in our starburst galaxies. The cause of this excess is probably a selective enrichment of nitrogen in the nuclei of the galaxies, following a succession of short and intense bursts of star formation. Our sample of SBNGs, located at a mean redshift of 0.015, has moderate Halpha (10^41 erg/s) and far infrared (10^10 Lsun) luminosities. The types are distributed equally among early- and late-type giant spirals with a slight preference for Sbc/Sc types because of their barred morphology. The majority (62%) of SBNGs are isolated with no sign of gravitational interaction. In terms of distance, luminosity and level of interaction, SBNGs are intermediate between HII galaxies and luminous infrared galaxies.

Abstract:We have employed a reliable technique of classification of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) based on the fit of well-sampled spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with a complete set of AGN and starburst galaxy templates. We have compiled ultraviolet, optical, and infrared data for a sample of 116 AGN originally selected for their X-ray and mid-infrared emissions (96 with single detections and 20 with double optical counterparts). This is the most complete compilation of multiwavelength data for such a big sample of AGN in the Extended Groth Strip (EGS). Through these SEDs, we are able to obtain highly reliable photometric redshifts and to distinguish between pure and host-dominated AGN. For the objects with unique detection we find that they can be separated into five main groups, namely: Starburst-dominated AGN (24 % of the sample), Starburst-contaminated AGN (7 %), Type-1 AGN (21 %), Type-2 AGN (24 %), and Normal galaxy hosting AGN (24 %). We find these groups concentrated at different redshifts: Type-2 AGN and Normal galaxy hosting AGN are concentrated at low redshifts, whereas Starburst-dominated AGN and Type-1 AGN show a larger span. Correlations between hard/soft X-ray and ultraviolet, optical and infrared luminosities, respectively, are reported for the first time for such a sample of AGN spanning a wide range of redshifts. For the 20 objects with double detection the percentage of Starburst-dominated AGN increases up to 48%.

Abstract:We present near and mid--IR observations of a sample of Seyfert II galaxies drawn from the $12\mu$m Galaxy Sample. The sample was observed in the J, H, K, L, M and N bands. Galaxy Surface Brightness Profiles are modeled using nuclear, bulge, bar (when necessary) and disk components. To check the reliability of our findings the procedure was tested using {\em Spitzer\/} observations of M\,31. Nuclear Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) are determined for 34 objects, and optical spectra are presented for 38, including analysis of their stellar populations using the STARLIGHT spectral synthesis code. Emission line diagnostic-diagrams are used to discriminate between genuine AGN and HII nuclei. Combining our observations with those found in the literature, we have a total of 40 SEDs. It is found that about 40\%\ of the SEDs are characterized by an upturn in the near-IR, which we have quantified as a NIR slope $\alpha < 1$ for an SED characterized as $\lambda f_{\lambda} \propto \lambda^{\alpha}$. Three objects with an HII nucleus and two Seyfert nuclei with strong contamination from a circumnuclear starburst, also show an upturn. For genuine AGN this component could be explained as emission from the accretion disk, a jet, or from a very hot dust component leaking from the central region through a clumpy obscuring structure. The presence of a very compact nuclear starburst as the origin for this NIR excess emission is not favored by our spectroscopic data for these objects.

Abstract:AGN feedback is believed to play an important role in shaping a variety of observed galaxy properties, as well as the evolution of their stellar masses and star formation rates. In particular, in the current theoretical paradigm of galaxy formation, AGN feedback is believed to play a crucial role in regulating the levels of activity in galaxies, in relatively massive halos at low redshift. Only in recent years, however, has detailed statistical information on the dependence of galaxy activity on stellar mass, parent halo mass and hierarchy has become available. In this paper, we compare the fractions of galaxies belonging to different activity classes (star-forming, AGN and radio active) with predictions from four different and independently developed semi-analytical models. We adopt empirical relations to convert physical properties into observables (H_alpha emission lines, OIII line strength and radio power). We demonstrate that all models used in this study reproduce the overall distributions of galaxies belonging to different activity classes as a function of stellar mass and halo mass: star forming galaxies and the strongest radio sources are preferentially associated with low-mass and high-mass galaxies/halos respectively. However, model predictions differ from observational measurements in a number of ways. All models used in our study predict that almost every >1.e12 Msun dark matter halo and/or >1.e11 Msun galaxy should host a bright radio source, while only a small fraction of galaxies belong to this class in the data. In addition, radio brightness is expected to depend strongly on the mass of the parent halo mass in the models, while strong and weak radio galaxies are found in similar environments in data. Our results highlight that the distribution of AGN as a function of stellar mass provides one of the most promising discriminants between different gas accretion schemes.

Abstract:We present ongoing work on the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), derived from X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, infrared and radio photometry and spectroscopy. Our work is motivated by new wide-field imaging surveys that will identify vast numbers of AGNs, and by the need to benchmark AGN SED fitting codes. We have constructed 41 SEDs of individual AGNs and 80 additional SEDs that mimic Seyfert spectra. All of our SEDs span 0.09 to 30 microns, while some extend into the X-ray and/or radio. We have tested the utility of the SEDs by using them to generate AGN photometric redshifts, and they outperform SEDs from the prior literature, including reduced redshift errors and flux density residuals.

The Compact Star-Forming Galaxies at $2<z<3$ in 3D-HST/CANDELS: AGN and Non-AGN Physical Properties

Abstract:We investigate the differences in the stellar population properties, the structure, and the environment between massive compact star-forming galaxies (cSFGs) with or without active galactic nucleus (AGN) at $2<z<3$ in the five 3D-HST/CANDELS fields. In a sample of 221 massive cSFGs, we constitute the most complete AGN census so far, identifying 66 AGNs by the X-ray detection, the mid-infrared color criterion, and/or the SED fitting, while the rest (155) are non-AGNs. Further dividing these cSFGs into two redshift bins, i.e., $2<z<2.5$ and $2.5 \leq z<3$, we find that in each redshift bin the cSFGs with AGNs have similar distributions of the stellar mass, the specific star formation rate, and the ratio of $L_{\rm IR}$ to $L_{\rm UV}$ to those without AGNs. After having performed a two-dimensional surface brightness modeling for those cSFGs with X-ray-detected AGNs (37) to correct for the influence of the central point-like X-ray AGN on measuring the structural parameters of its host galaxy, we find that in each redshift bin the cSFGs with AGNs have comparable distributions of all concerned structural parameters, i.e., the Sersic index, the 20\%-light radius, the Gini coefficient, and the concentration index, to those without AGNs. With a gradual consumption of available gas and dust, the structure of cSFGs, indicated by the above structural parameters, seem to be slightly more concentrated with decreasing redshift. At $2<z<3$, the similar environment between cSFGs with and without AGNs suggests that their AGN activities are potentially triggered by internal secular processes, such as gravitational instabilities or/and dynamical friction.

The Starburst - Active Galactic Nucleus Connection: the Role of Young Stellar Populations in Fueling Supermassive Black Holes

Abstract:Tracing the star formation history in circumnuclear regions (CNRs) is a key step toward understanding the starburst -active galactic nucleus (AGN) connection. However, bright nuclei outshining the entire host galaxy prevent the analysis of the stellar populations of CNRs around type-I AGNs. Obscuration of the nuclei by the central torus provides a unique opportunity to study the stellar populations of AGN host galaxies. We assemble a sample of 10,848 type-II AGNs with a redshift range of 0.03 <= z <= 0.08 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's Data Release 4, and measure the mean specific star formation rates (SSFRs) over the past 100 Myr in the central similar to 1-2 kpc. We find a tight correlation between the Eddington ratio (lambda) of the central black hole (BH) and the mean SSFR, strongly implying that supernova explosions (SNexp) play a role in the transportation of gas to galactic centers. We outline a model for this connection by accounting for the role of SNexp in the dynamics of CNRs. In our model, the viscosity of turbulence excited by SNexp is enhanced, and thus angular momentum can be efficiently transported, driving inflows toward galactic centers. Our model explains the observed relation. lambda alpha SFR(1.5-2.0), suggesting that AGNs are triggered by SNexp in CNRs.

Abstract:▪ Abstract Observations of star formation rates (SFRs) in galaxies provide vital clues to the physical nature of the Hubble sequence and are key probes of the evolutionary histories of galaxies. The focus of this review is on the broad patterns in the star formation properties of galaxies along the Hubble sequence and their implications for understanding galaxy evolution and the physical processes that drive the evolution. Star formation in the disks and nuclear regions of galaxies are reviewed separately, then discussed within a common interpretive framework. The diagnostic methods used to measure SFRs are also reviewed, and a self-consistent set of SFR calibrations is presented as an aid to workers in the field.

The Star Formation and AGN luminosity relation: Predictions from a semi-analytical model

Abstract:In a Universe where AGN feedback regulates star formation in massive galaxies, a strong correlation between these two quantities is expected. If the gas causing star formation is also responsible for feeding the central black hole, then a positive correlation is expected. If powerful AGNs are responsible for the star formation quenching, then a negative correlation is expected. Observations so far have mainly found a mild correlation or no correlation at all (i.e. a flat relation between star formation rate (SFR) and AGN luminosity), raising questions about the whole paradigm of "AGN feedback". In this paper, we report the predictions of the GALFORM semi-analytical model, which has a very strong coupling between AGN activity and quenching of star formation. The predicted SFR-AGN luminosity correlation appears negative in the low AGN luminosity regime, where AGN feedback acts, but becomes strongly positive in the regime of the brightest AGN. Our predictions reproduce reasonably well recent observations by Rosario et al., yet there is some discrepancy in the normalisation of the correlation at low luminosities and high redshifts. Though this regime could be strongly influenced by observational biases, we argue that the disagreement could be ascribed to the fact that GALFORM neglects AGN variability effects. Interestingly, the galaxies that dominate the regime where the observations imply a weak correlation are massive early-type galaxies that are subject to AGN feedback. Nevertheless, these galaxies retain high enough molecular hydrogen contents to maintain relatively high star formation rates and strong infrared emission.

Abstract:Several lines of argument support the existence of a link between activity at the nuclei of galaxies, in the form of an accreting supermassive black hole, and star-formation activity in these galaxies. The exact nature of this link is still under debate. Radio jets have long been argued to be an ideal mechanism that allows AGN to interact with their host galaxy and regulate star-formation. In this context, we are using a sample of radio sources in the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) field to study the nature of the putative link between AGN activity and star-formation. This is done by means of spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We use the excellent spectral coverage of the AKARI infrared space telescope together with the rich ancillary data available in the NEP to build SEDs extending from UV to far-IR wavelengths. Through SED fitting we constrain both the AGN and host galaxy components. We find a significant AGN component in our sample of relatively faint radio-sources ($<$mJy), that increases in power with increasing radio-luminosity. At the highest radio-luminosities, the presence of powerful jets dominates the radio emission of these sources. A positive correlation is found between the luminosity of the AGN component and that of star-formation in the host galaxy, independent of the radio luminosity. By contrast, for a given redshift and AGN luminosity, we find that increasing radio-luminosity leads to a decrease in the specific star-formation rate. The most radio-loud AGN are found to lie on the main sequence of star-formation for their respective redshifts. For the first time, such a two-sided feedback process is seen in the same sample. We conclude that radio jets do suppress star-formation in their host galaxies but appear not to totally quench it. Our results therefore support the maintenance nature of "radio-mode" feedback from radio-AGN jets.

Abstract:The effect of active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback on the host galaxy, and its role in quenching or enhancing star-formation, is still uncertain due to the fact that usual star-formation rate (SFR) indicators -- emission-line luminosities based on the assumption of photoionisation by young stars -- cannot be used for active galaxies as the ionising source is the AGN. We thus investigate the use of SFR derived from the stellar population and its relation with that derived from the gas for a sample of 170 AGN hosts and a matched control sample of 291 galaxies. We compare the values of SFR densities obtained via the Ha emission line (SFRg) for regions ionised by hot stars according to diagnostic diagrams with those obtained from stellar population synthesis (SFRstars) over the last 1 to 100~Myr. We find that the SFRstars over the last 20~Myrs closely reproduces the SFRg, although a better match is obtained via the transformation: log(SFRstars) = (0.870+/-0.004) log(SFRg) +(0.007+/-0.006), which is valid for both AGN hosts and non-active galaxies. We also compare the reddening obtained via the gas Ha/Hb ratio with that derived via the full spectral fitting in the stellar population synthesis. We find that the ratio between the gas and stellar extinction is in the range 2.64 < A_Vgas/A_Vstar} < 2.85, in approximate agreement with previous results from the literature, obtained for smaller samples. We interpret the difference as being due to the fact that the reddening of the stars is dominated by that affecting the less obscured underlying older population, while the reddening of the gas is larger as it is associated to a younger stellar population buried deeper in the dust.

Abstract:We present a study of the host galaxies of AGN selected from the zCOSMOS survey to establish if accretion onto supermassive black holes and star formation are explicitly linked up to z 1. We identify 152 galaxies that harbor AGN, based on XMM observations of 7543 galaxies (i<22.5). Star formation rates (SFRs), including those weighted by stellar mass, are determined using the [OII]3727 emission-line, corrected for an AGN contribution. We find that the majority of AGN hosts have significant levels of star formation with a distribution spanning 1-100 Msun yr^-1. The close association between AGN activity and star formation is further substantiated by an increase in the AGN fraction with the youthfulness of their stars as indicated by the rest-frame color (U-V) and spectral index Dn(4000); we demonstrate that mass-selection alleviates an artifical peak falling in the transition region when using luminosity-limited samples. We also find that the SFRs of AGN hosts evolve with cosmic time in a manner that closely mirrors the overall galaxy population and explains the low SFRs in AGNs (z<0.3) from the SDSS. We conclude that the conditions most conducive for AGN activity are a massive host galaxy and a large reservoir of gas. Furthermore, a direct correlation between mass accretion rate onto SMBHs and SFR is shown to be weak although the average ratio is constant with redshift, effectively shifting the evidence for a co-evolution scenario in a statistical manner to smaller physical scales. Our findings illustrate an intermittent scenario with an AGN lifetime substantially shorter than that of star formation and underlying complexities regarding fueling over vastly different physical scales yet to be determined [Abridged].
The Interplay Between Star Formation and Black Hole Accretion in Nearby Active Galaxies

Abstract:Black hole accretion is widely thought to influence star formation in galaxies, but the empirical evidence for a physical correlation between star formation rate (SFR) and the properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) remain highly controversial. We take advantage of a recently developed SFR estimator based on the [O ii] λ3727 and [O iii] λ5007 emission lines to investigate the SFRs of the host galaxies of more than 5800 type-1 and 7600 type-2 AGNs with z < 0.35. After matching in luminosity and redshift, we find that type-1 and type-2 AGNs have a similar distribution of internal reddening, which is significant and corresponds to ∼109 M⊙ of cold molecular gas. In spite of their comparable gas content, type-2 AGNs, independent of stellar mass, Eddington ratio, redshift or molecular gas mass, exhibit intrinsically stronger star formation activity than type-1 AGNs, in apparent disagreement with the conventional AGN unified model. We observe a tight, linear relation between AGN luminosity (accretion rate) and SFR, one that becomes more significant toward smaller physical scales, suggesting that the link between the AGN and star formation occurs in the central kpc-scale region. This, along with a correlation between SFR and Eddington ratio in the regime of super-Eddington accretion, can be interpreted as evidence that star formation is impacted by positive feedback from the AGN.
The Star-forming Main Sequence of the Host Galaxies of Low-redshift Quasars

Abstract:We investigate the star-forming main sequence of the host galaxies of a large, well-defined sample of 453 redshift similar to 0.3 quasars with previously available star formation rates by deriving stellar masses from modeling their broadband (grizy) spectral energy distribution. We perform two-dimensional, simultaneous, multi-filter decomposition of Pan-STARRS1 3 pi Steradian Survey images to disentangle the active galactic nucleus (AGN) from its host galaxy, by explicitly considering, for the first time, the wavelength variation of galaxy structures. We quantify the Sersic profiles and sizes of the host galaxies from mock AGNs generated from both real and idealized galaxies. Detailed morphological classifications of the calibration galaxy sample using Hubble Space Telescope images enable us to estimate crude morphological types of the quasars. Although the majority (similar to 60%) of the quasars are hosted by bulge-dominated, early-type galaxies, a substantial fraction (similar to 40%) reside in disk-dominated, late-type galaxies, suggesting that at least in these systems major mergers have not played a significant role in regulating their AGN activity, in agreement with recent simulations and observations of nearby quasars. The vast majority (similar to 90%) of the quasars have star formation rates that place them on or above the galaxy star-forming main sequence, with more rapidly accreting AGNs displaced further above the main sequence. Quasar host galaxies generally follow the stellar mass-size relation defined by inactive galaxies, both for late-type and early-type systems, but roughly 1/3 of the population has smaller sizes at a given stellar mass, reminiscent of compact star-forming galaxies at higher redshift.
Herschel Observed Stripe 82 Quasars and Their Host Galaxies: Connections Between Agn Activity and Host Galaxy Star Formation

Abstract:In this work, we present a study of 207 quasars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar catalogs and the Herschel Stripe 82 survey. Quasars within this sample are high-luminosity quasars with a mean bolometric luminosity of 1046.4 erg s−1. The redshift range of this sample is within z < 4, with a mean value of 1.5 ± 0.78. Because we only selected quasars that have been detected in all three Herschel-SPIRE bands, the quasar sample is complete yet highly biased. Based on the multi-wavelength photometric observation data, we conducted a spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting through UV to FIR. Parameters such as active galactic nucleus (AGN) luminosity, far-IR (FIR) luminosity, stellar mass, as well as many other AGN and galaxy properties are deduced from the SED fitting results. The mean star formation rate (SFR) of the sample is 419 M⊙ yr−1 and the mean gas mass is ∼1011.3 M⊙. All of these results point to an IR luminous quasar system. Compared with star formation main sequence (MS) galaxies, at least 80 out of 207 quasars are hosted by starburst galaxies. This supports the statement that luminous AGNs are more likely to be associated with major mergers. The SFR increases with the redshift up to z = 2. It is correlated with the AGN bolometric luminosity, where . The AGN bolometric luminosity is also correlated with the host galaxy mass and gas mass. Yet the correlation between LFIR and LBol has higher significant level, implies that the link between AGN accretion and the SFR is more primal. The MBH/M* ratio of our sample is 0.02, higher than the value 0.005 in the local universe. It might indicate an evolutionary trend of the MBH–M* scaling relation.

Abstract:We present an analysis of the host properties of 85 224 emission‐line galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We show that Seyferts and low‐ionization narrow emission‐line regions (LINERs) form clearly separated branches on the standard optical diagnostic diagrams. We derive a new empirical classification scheme which cleanly separates star‐forming galaxies, composite active galactic nucleus–H ii (AGN–H ii) galaxies, Seyferts and LINERs and we study the host galaxy properties of these different classes of objects. LINERs are older, more massive, less dusty, less concentrated, and they have higher velocity dispersions and lower [O iii] luminosities than Seyfert galaxies have. Seyferts and LINERs are most strongly distinguished by their [O iii] luminosities. We then consider the quantity L[O iii]/σ4, which is an indicator of the black hole accretion rate relative to the Eddington rate. Remarkably, we find that at fixedL[O iii]/σ4, all differences between Seyfert and LINER host properties disappear. LINERs and Seyferts form a continuous sequence, with LINERs dominant at low L/LEDD and Seyferts dominant at high L/LEDD. These results suggest that the majority of LINERs are AGN and that the Seyfert/LINER dichotomy is analogous to the high/low‐state models and show that pure LINERs require a harder ionizing radiation field with lower ionization parameter than required by Seyfert galaxies, consistent with the low and high X‐ray binary states.

The Spectral Energy Distributions of Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract:As a step toward elucidating the physical conditions in nearby active galaxies, this paper presents spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a sample of seven low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs). SEDs for four objects are presented for the first time (NGC 4261, NGC 4579, NGC 6251, and M84); the data for the remaining three (M81, M87, and NGC 4594) have been substantially updated compared to previous studies. The nuclear fluxes were carefully selected so as to avoid contamination by emission from the host galaxy, which can be substantial for very weak nuclei. The present sample of low-luminosity nuclei exhibits SEDs that look markedly different from the canonical broadband continuum spectrum of luminous AGNs. The most striking difference is that the low-luminosity objects lack an ultraviolet excess (the "big blue bump"), a feature normally associated with emission from a standard optically thick, geometrically thin accretion disk. The weakness of the ultraviolet band leads to an unusually steep optical-ultraviolet continuum shape and a more pronounced contribution from the X-rays to the ionizing spectrum. It is argued that the absence of the big blue bump is a property intrinsic to the SEDs and not an artifact of strong dust extinction. Another notable property of the SEDs is the prominence of the compact, flat-spectrum radio component relative to the emission in other energy bands. All seven nuclei in the sample, including three hosted by spiral galaxies, technically qualify as "radio-loud" objects according to conventional criteria. Finally, the integrated spectra confirm the exceptional weakness of the nuclei: the bolometric luminosities range from 2 × 1041 to 8 × 1042 ergs s-1, or ~10-6-10-3 times the Eddington rate for the black hole masses previously reported for these galaxies.

Abstract:Based on the spectroscopic and shear catalogs for SDSS galaxies in the local Universe, we compare optically-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with control star-forming and quiescent galaxies on galactic, inter-halo and larger scales. We find that AGNs are preferentially found in two specific stages of galaxy evolution: star-burst and `green valley' phases, and that the stellar population of their host galaxies is quite independent of stellar mass, different from normal galaxies. Combining galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy clustering on large scales, we measure the mass of AGN host halos. The typical halo mass is about $10^{12}h^{-1}\rm M_{\bigodot}$, similar to the characteristic mass in the stellar mass-halo mass relation (SHMR). For given stellar mass, AGN host galaxies and star-forming galaxies share the same SHMR, while quiescent galaxies have more massive halos. Clustering analysis on halo scales reveals that AGNs are surrounded by a larger number of satellites (with stellar mass down to 1/1000 of the mass of the central galaxy) than star-forming galaxies, and that galaxies with larger stellar velocity dispersion have more satellites. The number of satellites also increase with halo mass, reaching unity around $10^{12}h^{-1}\rm M_{\bigodot}$. Our results suggest a scenario, in which the interaction of the central galaxy with the satellites triggers an early episode of star burst and AGN activities, followed by multiple AGN cycles driven by the non-axisymmetric structure produced by the interaction. The feedback from the starburst and AGN reduces the amount of cold gas for fueling the central black hole, producing a characteristic halo mass scale, $\sim 10^{12}h^{-1}\rm M_{\bigodot}$, where the AGN fraction peaks.
