Abstract:The optimisation of software energy consumption is of growing importance across all scales of modern computing, i.e., from embedded systems to data-centres. Practitioners in the field of Search-Based Software Engineering and Genetic Improvement of Software acknowledge that optimising software energy consumption is difficult due to noisy and expensive fitness evaluations. However, it is apparent from results to date that more progress needs to be made in rigorously validating optimisation results. This problem is pressing because modern computing platforms have highly complex and variable behaviour with respect to energy consumption. To compare solutions fairly we propose in this paper a new validation approach called R3-validation which exercises software variants in a rotated-round-robin order. Using a case study, we present an in-depth analysis of the impacts of changing system states on software energy usage, and we show how R3-validation mitigates these. We compare it with current validation approaches across multiple devices and operating systems, and we show that it aligns better with actual platform behaviour.

Abstract:Power profiling helps to do power-aware synthesis and power optimization for digital system. Traditional profiling method involves inserting probes and feeding the program with a large amount of testing data to collect statistical information. The cost of this method is high so the use of which is limited. In this paper, a power profiling method that is based on a new computing model - multiple-dimensional computing model, is presented. It helps to collect information such as signal probability and transition density in a single run and the information is kept accurate enough. The method is easy to be implemented and incorporated into synthesis and optimization system

A Silicon-Validated Methodology for Power Delivery Modeling and Simulation

Abstract:Power integrity has become increasingly important for the designs in 32nm or below. This paper discusses a silicon-validated methodology for microprocessor power delivery modeling and simulation. There have been many prior works focusing on power delivery analysis and optimization. However, none of them provided a comprehensive modeling methodology with post-silicon data to validate the use of the models. In this paper, we present power delivery system models that are able to achieve less than 10% deviation from the supply noise measurements on a 32nm industrial microprocessor design. Our models are able to capture the unique impacts of on-die inductance, state dependent coupling capacitance and die-package interaction. Those impacts happen to be prominent for the designs in 32nm or below but were considered negligible or even not noted in earlier technology nodes. Comparisons were made to quantify the impacts of different modeling strategies on supply noise prediction accuracy. This specifically provides designers insights in selecting appropriate models for power delivery analysis. The impact of power delivery noise on timing margin was accurately estimated showing a good agreement to the worst-case jitter measurements.

Abstract:Currently, people spend a lot of time using their mobile devices. With such ubiquity of mobile devices in our daily life, battery capacity and quality are of utmost importance. Running software applications (called apps) are one of the major factors influencing the power consumption in mobile devices. In order to meet user needs, mobile apps are becoming inherently complex and resource greedy. Therefore, fulfilling these requirements at the pace imposed by the market may degrade software construction quality and insert so-called energy code smells: bad patterns in the source code of an app that indicate a deeper problem and adversely affect power consumption. This work proposes a developer-oriented framework for identifying and fixing patterns via analyzing different application code flavors in a user-driven test scenario. A special app was designed in order to validate the Android implementation of the proposed methodology. The study results have shown significant improvement regarding energy efficiency after correcting one or more energy code smells, with a 4 to 30 percent decrease in battery drain. Additionally, the power consumption signature term is defined in the context of mobile applications. This paper presents a developer-oriented framework for assessing power consumption in mobile applications. Our key contributions include identifying significant energy code smells, demonstrating their impact on power consumption, and providing a toolset for developers to improve energy efficiency.

Abstract:It becomes very important to understand power characteristics of mobile applications because more and more complex applications are running on modern smartphones. Although many techniques have been proposed to estimate the power dissipation rate for mobile applications, it typically requires hardware support (i.e., power meters) or complex power models (software profiling or hardware parameters). These techniques might work well in labs with a small set of applications. However, it becomes impractical when we try to estimate the power of mobile applications in an uncontrolled environment. This paper proposes a novel method for estimating the power consumption of mobile applications with profile-based battery traces. Battery traces can be easily collected through a user-level application on any devices. Although it is difficult to achieve accurate results for only a few users because battery changes are coarse-grained, the method is expected to reach an accurate estimation when the number of battery traces reaches a certain scale. Our experiments based on battery traces from more than 80,000 users demonstrate that it is possible to estimate application power with only coarse-grained battery traces. The results are also validated with measured power numbers from a Monsoon power monitor.

Abstract:We propose a novel system level power estimation method for wireless communication devices. The method estimates the power consumption of a processor and external devices by only using OS level profile information (i.e., the system call information), and is applicable to both off-line and online power optimizations. Evaluations on a commercial wireless communication device showed that the method achieves an estimation error of less than 10%.

Abstract:The Peruvian government adopted the ISO/IEC 12207 standard and established its mandatory implementation in public entities to improve the quality of the software products. In this context, software requirements validation tasks were introduced to improve the quality of the software product. In this study, the relationship between the improvement of software requirement quality and the software product quality in use was explored and analyzed. Analysis was based on the design of software product quality-in-use and the measure of metrics from ISO/IEC 25010 standard in two software products. The results show that the validation activities introduced in the software requirements stage have a positive relationship with the quality in use of the software products analyzed. In the software studied, it can be said that the improvement of the quality of the requirements has contributed to the improvement of the quality in use of software products. In this case, it has increased time efficiency to complete tasks by 45%, reduced errors for a task by 40%, the number of tasks with errors by 47%, the cost of time to perform tasks by 29%, and unnecessary actions by 53%. In addition, overall satisfaction, user pleasure, information quality, and interfaces quality are the metrics that significantly improve.

Abstract:Energy consumption constraints on computing systems are more important than ever. Maintenance costs for high performance systems are limiting the applicability of processing devices with large dissipation power. New solutions are needed to increase both the computation capability and the power efficiency. Moreover, energy efficient applications should balance performance vs. consumption. Therefore power data of components are important. This work presents the most remarkable alternatives to measure the power consumption of different types of computing systems, describing the advantages and limitations of available power measurement systems. Finally, a methodology is proposed to select the right power consumption measurement system taking into account precision of the measure, scalability and controllability of the acquisition system.

Functional Test Content Optimization for Peak-Power Validation — an Experimental Study

Abstract:One of the challenges of functional test content optimization, in the context of performance validation, is to predict from a high level model an event of interest observed in either a detailed simulation or in silicon testing. This work uses peak power validation as an example to study the potential of using learning algorithms to uncover the correlations between the different levels of abstraction. Using the OpenSPARC T2 microprocessor as the driving example, we have studied the use of three learning algorithms for building models to explain the events of interest in the output of a power simulation. These models are built based on features extracted from a high-level view of the design. We show that the learned models can be used to select assembly programs that are likely to produce similar interesting events, and also can be used to produce constrained random assembly programs capable of exposing the events of our interest.

Such systems for managing power need to be autonomous, scalable, low in complexity, and comprised of portable algorithms in order to be well applied across the varying implementations that utilize power systems. Although similar metrics exist for software in general, their definitions do not readily lend themselves to the unique characteristics of power management systems or systems of similar architecture.

Abstract:Abstract The consumption and production of energy are more dynamic as distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar photovoltaics (PV) are deployed within the electric distribution system. The existing techniques for bulk generation do not take full advantage of DERs and can lead to wasted energy and higher costs for both utility companies and consumers. Commercial and residential building energy management systems are usually on a fixed schedule and are not able to respond to changes in energy price instantaneously. There is a need for a real-time pricing structure that can accommodate the fluctuating cost of energy based on supply and demand, and for an energy management system that is able to respond to the dynamic utility rate. As such, there is a need for a robust energy management control strategy and methodology to validate new approaches. To address this gap, a strategy to control heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in a residential house was developed along with a validation methodology. A model of predictive control was implemented to optimize the thermostat setpoints and minimize energy cost for an individual residential house while maintaining thermal comfort of residents. This model was integrated with EnergyPlus simulation via an open source co-simulation platform previously developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Total energy consumption and cost for consumers were compared between a case with the proposed model and a baseline case that used fixed-temperature setpoint control. The simple dynamic pricing model used in simulations was proportional to the demand of energy at that time of day. This work will contribute to the development of dynamic utility pricing models and residential control strategies for grid-interactive buildings and homes. The outcome of this research can be expanded to different building models or locations in future work.
On the Energy Footprint of Mobile Testing Frameworks

Abstract:High energy consumption is a challenging issue that an ever increasing number of mobile applications face today. However, energy consumption is being tested in an ad hoc way, despite being an important non-functional requirement of an application. Such limitation becomes particularly disconcerting during software testing: on the one hand, developers do not really know how to measure energy; on the other hand, there is no knowledge as to what is the energy overhead imposed by the testing framework. In this paper, as we evaluate eight popular mobile UI automation frameworks, we have discovered that there are automation frameworks that increase energy consumption up to roughly 2200%. While limited in the interactions one can do, Espresso is the most energy efficient framework. However, depending on the needs of the tester, Appium, Monkeyrunner, or UIAutomator are good alternatives. In practice, results show that deciding which is the most suitable framework is vital. We provide a decision tree to help developers make an educated decision on which framework suits best their testing needs.

Abstract:Energy-conscious behavior analysis plays a vital part in energy consumption analysis of mobile phones, it is of great help to energy optimization by understanding how and why the energy is used.This paper presents a method which combined software detection and hardware detection on both iOS and Android platforms.In terms of software detection, the battery level was obtained based on system APIs and relevant applications which were developed to measure the energy consumption of key energy-consuming entities, such as screen, audio and network interface under different using scenarios, so that the key factors could be determined.In terms of hardware detection, NI myDAQ was used to communicate with computer.By recording the current in real time, the energy consumption was calculated.The experiment result of hardware detection validates the effectiveness of software detection.In the end, by comparing all the energy-conscious behaviors, the highly conscious behaviors are identified.

Abstract:With the increasing complexity of the real-time embedded software, the power consumption is becoming a real challenge in the system designs. In this paper, for modelling the component-based embedded software, the interface automata is extended by adding time intervals on the actions and assigning energy consumption rates on the states. The extensional formalism is called energy interface automata. Then the system designs are modelled by energy interface automaton networks which consist of a set of energy interface automata synchronized by shared actions. Based on analyzing the integer state space of the energy interface automaton networks and its compatible reachiability graph, we develop two algorithms for the problem of the minimal energy consumption calculation and the maximal energy consumption verification respectively.
Data-driven Software-based Power Estimation for Embedded Devices

Abstract:Energy measurement of computer devices, which are widely used in the Internet of Things (IoT), is an important yet challenging task. Most of these IoT devices lack ready-to-use hardware or software for power measurement. A cost-effective solution is to use low-end consumer-grade power meters. However, these low-end power meters cannot provide accurate instantaneous power measurements. In this paper, we propose an easy-to-use approach to derive an instantaneous software-based energy estimation model with only low-end power meters based on data-driven analysis through machine learning. Our solution is demonstrated with a Jetson Nano board and Ruideng UM25C USB power meter. Various machine learning methods combined with our smart data collection method and physical measurement are explored. Benchmarks were used to evaluate the derived software-power model for the Jetson Nano board and Raspberry Pi. The results show that 92% accuracy can be achieved compared to the long-duration measurement. A kernel module that can collect running traces of utilization and frequencies needed is developed, together with the power model derived, for power prediction for programs running in real environment.

Abstract:As a baseline for software development, a correct and complete requirements definition is one foundation of software quality. Previously, a novel approach to static testing of software requirements was proposed in which requirements definitions are tested on a set of task scenarios by examining software behaviour in each scenario described by an activity list. Such descriptions of software behaviour can be generated automatically from requirements models. This paper investigates various testing methods for selecting test scenarios. Data flow, state transition and entity testing methods are studied. A variety of test adequacy criteria and their combinations are formally defined and the subsume relations between the criteria are proved. Empirical studies of the testing methods and the construction of a prototype testing tool are reported.

Abstract:The increasing usage of smartphones in everyday tasks has been motivated many studies on energy consumption characterization aiming to improve smartphone devices' effectiveness and increase user usage time. In this scenario, it is essential to study mechanisms capable of characterizing user usage patterns, so smartphones' components can be adapted to promote the best user experience with lower energy consumption. The goal of this study is to build an energy consumption model based on user usage patterns aiming to provide the best accurate model to be used by application developers and automated optimization. To develop the energy consumption models, we established a method to identify the components with the most influence in the smartphone's energy consumption and identify the states of each influential device. Besides that, we established a method to prove the robustness of the models constructed using inaccurate hardware and a strategy to assess the accuracy of the model built. After training and testing each strategy to model the energy consumption based on the user's usage and perform the Nemenyi test, we demonstrated that it is possible to get a Mean Absolute Error of 158.57mW when the smartphone's average power is 1970.1mW. Some studies show that the leading smartphone's workload is the user. Based on this fact, we developed an automatic model building methodology that is capable of analyzing the user's usage data and build smart models that can estimate the smartphone's energy consumption based on the user's usage pattern. With the automatic model building methodology, we can adopt strategies to minimize the usage of components that drain the battery.
