Abstract:The development of boron nitride (BN) aerogels with excellent performance, including low density, excellent mechanical properties, superior chemical inertness, and oxidation resistance, is of great significance for their practical applications, especially in harsh environments. However, the main challenge for the large-scale preparation of nanostructured BN aerogels is to simultaneously obtain BN units with high purity and crystallinity, while maintaining their nanostructure characteristics. Herein, we have creatively prepared high-quality BN aerogels by high-temperature pyrolysis of a melamine diborate (M·2B) aerogel precursor via induction heating. The synthesized BN aerogels consist of one-dimensional porous BN microfibers. Induction-derived pyrolysis with a rapid heating rate and an ultrahigh temperature can greatly reduce the growth time of BN nanocrystals, resulting in the maintenance of the purity, crystallinity, and nanostructure feature of BN fiber units simultaneously. As the pyrolysis voltage increases, the thermal stability and oxidation resistance of the BN aerogel have been greatly improved, and its resistivity has increased by at least three orders of magnitude, mainly due to its low carbon and oxygen impurity content and high crystallinity. The as-prepared BN aerogels exhibit excellent comprehensive properties, including superb thermal stability and oxidation resistance, as well as excellent mechanical properties and thermal insulation. Therefore, BN aerogels can find promising applications in energy storage, catalysis, and environmental remediation, especially in harsh working environments.

Abstract:Aerogels with extraordinary mechanical properties attract a lot of interest for their wide spread applications. However, the required flexibility is yet to be satisfied, especially under extreme conditions. Herein, a boron nitride nanoribbon aerogel with excellent temperature-invariant super-flexibility is developed by high temperature amination of a melamine diborate precursor formed by hydrogen bonding assembly. The unique structure of the aerogel provides it with outstanding compressing/bending/twisting elasticity, cutting resistance, and recoverable properties. Furthermore, the excellent mechanical super-flexibility is maintained over a wide temperature range, from liquid nitrogen temperature (-196 degrees C) to higher than 1000 degrees C, which extends their possible applications to harsh environments.

Abstract:Thermally insulating aramid nanofiber (ANF) aerogels enable a wide range of applications but are limited by their low mechanical elasticity. Efficient design of aerogels' components and microstructures is crucial yet remains highly challenging for effectively improving the flexibility of ANF aerogels. Here, for the first time, we report the incorporation of boron nitride nanoribbons (BNNRs) into ANF aerogel to form a multilayer BNNR/ANF hybrid aerogel, which is prepared by suspension mixing of BNNRs and ANFs followed by a vacuum-assisted and directional solidification process. Flexible BNNRs with a high aspect ratio are uniformly embedded in the ANF networks, giving the ANF aerogel an extremely high mechanical deformability (up to 60 % compressive strain), capable of retaining its elasticity even after 100 compression cycles or in liquid N 2 (−196 °C). Moreover, the introduction of BNNRs does not reduce the thermal insulation capacity of ANF aerogels, while significantly improving their thermal stability and fire resistance. These excellent multifunctionality benefits from the synergistic effect of organic–inorganic components and the multilayer structure of aerogel. This work paves the avenue for developing next-generation elastic and thermal insulating materials with great potential for widespread applications.

Abstract:Boron nitride (BN) aerogels is a class of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical network structure assembled from BN micro/nanostructures. The construction of BN/BN composite aerogel by introducing of BN micro/nano-structural units into the 3D BN aerogel scaffold provides an effective strategy for obtaining BN aerogel with improved all-round properties. Here, a novel kind of BN/BN composite aerogels has been developed by vacuum impregnation of ammonia borane (AB) into fiber-based BN aerogels, followed by high-temperature pyrolysis. The introducing of AB into BN aerogels makes the formation of unique AB/BN composite aerogels, and the high-temperature decomposition of AB results in the obtaining of a series of multifunctional composites, i.e. BN/BN composite aerogels. As compared with the porous BN microfibers in original BN aerogel, the self-assembled fibers in BN/BN composite aerogel are densely covered with high crystalline BN nanoflakes, which are generated by the AB decomposition. The obtained BN/BN composite aerogels have shown excellent thermal stability, significantly improved hydrophobic effect and heat transfer capability. This work provides a new idea for the future research and development of BN composite aerogels.

Abstract:A simple route was proposed to prepare size-controlled carbon aerogel with superior thermal insulation and mechanical properties. Boron-modified phenolic resin (BPR) and hexamethylene-tetramine (HMTA) were crosslinked to build three-dimensional network structure initially followed by CO2 supercritical drying and carbonization. In order to regulate the microstructure of BPR aerogels, the best proportion of HMTA to BPR was confirmed as H/P = 1/5 based on the micromorphology performance in SEM. The interaction between HMTA and BPR was also studied by FTIR spectra, and microstructure evolution of the target product- carbon aerogels were illustrated by SEM technique. SEM patterns indicated that the carbon aerogels maintain a stable porous structure at 1000 °C (carbonization temperature), and pore size distribution were between 321∼612nm based on N2 adsorption-desorption method. The synthesis method is convenient and flexible, permitting a tailor of porous structure, mechanical strength, density and thermal conductivity by adjusting carbonization temperature and time. Consequently, the obtained carbon aerogel with high compressive strength (1.0∼2.3 MPa), low density (0.16∼0.26 g‧cm−3) and low thermal conductivity (0.023∼0.036 W m−l K−1) deserve to be a competitive candidate for high-temperature heat insulation material.

Robust and Density Tunable Kevlar/Hexagonal Boron Nitride Microribbon Aerogels with Excellent Thermal, Mechanical, and Oil-Absorption Properties

Abstract:With rapid advancements in aerospace and supersonic aircraft technology, there is a growing demand for multifunctional thermal protective materials. Aerogels, known for their low density and high porosity, have garnered significant attention in this regard. However, developing a lightweight multifunctional aerogel that combines exceptional thermal and mechanical properties through a straightforward and time-efficient method remains a significant challenge. Herein, a facile and universal approach is developed for the preparation of Kevlar/hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) aerogels, in which a spin-assisted method is applied to create robust microribbons and further accelerate solvent displacement. The resulting microribbon scaffold, with its entangled nanofiber-nanosheet morphologies, exhibits sufficient strength to prevent volume shrinkage during drying, thereby allowing precise control over aerogel density. The porous hybrid aerogels, featuring controllable geometric characteristics and tailored densities ranging from 6.9 to 100 mg cm-3, can be successfully fabricated. These aerogels exhibit excellent thermal insulation properties, and the thermal conductivities of the as-prepared KBX aerogels have a wide distribution in the range of 0.0269-0.0450 W m-1 k-1. The thermal stability of the hybrid aerogels is enhanced to 566 °C. Moreover, the resulting hybrid aerogels exhibit an ultrahigh bearing ratio, supporting more than 2000 times their own weight while maintaining stable structural integrity. These aerogels also demonstrate high compressive strength, hydrophobicity, and excellent sorption performance for various oils and solvents. Additionally, the oil-saturated aerogels can be easily recovered through heat treatment or combustion in air. The features endow hybrid Kevlar/h-BN aerogels with significant potential for applications in thermal management, environmental protection, and neutron protection.
Pectin-assisted dispersion of exfoliated boron nitride nanosheets for assembled bio-composite aerogels

Abstract:Boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) were prepared via the exfoliation of hexagonal boron nitride in isopropyl alcohol. Extremely stable BNNSs dispersions were obtained after the ultrasonication in pectin aqueous suspensions, and the bio-composite aerogels were fabricated via the freeze-drying process. The digital photographs of pectin/BNNSs aqueous suspensions and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results showed that there was a strong interfacial interaction between BNNSs and pectin macromolecular chains. Owing to the excellent dispersion and intensive interaction, the thermal stability, compressive strength and flame retardant properties of pectin/BNNSs bio-composite aerogels were significantly improved. Compared to neat pectin aerogel, pectin/BNNSs-2 (mass ratio of pectin and BNNSs, 10/1) possessed improved onset thermal decomposition temperature (by 9 °C), enhanced compressive strength (by 119%), reduced peak heat release rate (by 45%) and peak CO2 production (by 53%) at cone radiation intensity of 60 kW/m2. Residue analysis indicated that the presence of BNNSs promoted the carbonization of pectin aerogels.
Preparation and high-temperature service performance of hierarchically pore-structured BN fiber aerogels

Abstract:Multifunctional aerogels with high porosity and good thermal insulation have attracted much attention in the field of energy and aerospace engineering. In this work, a three-dimensional BN fiber aerogel with hierarchically porous structure was prepared through a freeze-drying combined with in-situ carbothermal reduction nitridation route. The synthesized BN fiber aerogel exhibits a specific surface area of 154.3 m2/g, a high porosity of 96.8% and hydrophobicity. Moreover, the BN fiber aerogel shows a low thermal conductivity of 0.051 W/(m·K) and excellent thermal insulation properties owing to its hierarchical porous structure. Particularly, the BN fiber aerogel still maintains its low thermal conductivity and a rather high mechanical strength after re-heated at 1473 K for 3 h in Ar atmosphere, suggesting excellent high-temperature service performance. The successfully developed multifunctional BN fiber aerogel holds promising potential in high-temperature thermal insulation fields.

Konjac glucomannan-based aerogels with excellent thermal stability and flame retardancy for thermal insulation application

Abstract:Biomass aerogels are a promising kind of environment-friendly thermal insulation material. However, the flammability, poor water resistance, and thermal instability of biomass aerogels limit their applications. Herein, freeze-drying and thermal imidization were used to create konjac glucomannan (KGM), boron nitride (BN), and polyimide (PI)-based aerogels with a semi-interpenetrating network structure. The introduction of BN was beneficial to improve the mechanical properties and thermal stability of aerogels. The imidization process of PI improved the hydrophobicity, mechanical property, and flame retardancy of the aerogels. The synergistic effect of PI and BN reduced the peak heat release rate and total heat release rate of KGM-based aerogel by 55.8 % and 35 %, respectively, and endowed aerogel with good self-extinguishing performance. Moreover, the results of thermal conductivity and infrared thermal imaging demonstrated that the aerogels had excellent thermal insulation properties, and could effectively manage thermal energy over a wide range of temperatures. This study provides a simple method for the preparation of heat-insulating aerogel with high fire safety, which has broad application prospects in the field of energy saving and emission reduction.

Abstract:Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has the similar structure as graphitic material. It has excellent mechanical strength, wide band gap, high chemical oxidation resistance, good electrical insulation and outstanding thermal conductivity, and has attracted increasing attention of many researchers. However, nanoscale h-BN is difficult to disperse and easy to agglomerate in solution that greatly restricts its practical applications. h-BN based aerogels has low density, good mechanical strength and outstanding thermal conductivity that can be used as ultralight thermal conductive materials or act as thermal conductive fillers in polymer. In addition, h-BN based aerogels possess adjustable porous structure, high specific surface area and compressibility, which can be used as an ideal adsorption material to absorb the toxic gas in air or heavy metal ions and organic pollutions in water. Based on the research progress at home and abroad, this article summarizes the preparation methods of h-BN based aerogels, such as freeze-drying method, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process, template method, and composite crosslinking method, etc. Finally, the applications of the h-BN based aerogels in heat transfer and adsorption are disccussed in detail.
Anisotropic thermally superinsulating boron nitride composite aerogel for building thermal management

Abstract:Thermally insulating materials are commonly used to reduce energy consumption in buildings. Most commercial products possess only low thermal conductivities but poor insulating capabilities in the daytime with little sunlight reflectance and thermal emittance. It is challenging to achieve all traits in the same material. Herein, anisotropic boron nitride nanosheet (BNNS)/polyvinyl alcohol composite aerogels are developed using the unidirectional freeze-casting technique. Benefitting from the aligned porous structure, the composite aerogel with an optimal BNNS content exhibits a combination of an ultralow TC of 20.3 mW/mK in the through-thickness direction, a high solar-weighted reflectance of 95.0 % over the whole sunlight wavelength and a high emittance of above 93 % within the atmospheric transparency window. These exceptional thermo-optical properties enable the composite aerogel to maintain the interior temperature much cooler than commercially available foams, making them promising candidates as superinsulating envelopes for energy saving in buildings towards carbon neutrality.

New BN/SiOC aerogel composites fabricated by the sol-gel method with excellent thermal insulation performance at high temperature

Abstract:Although pure silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) aerogels have unique properties of low density and high temperature resistance, they are still difficult to apply at a large scale due to brittleness. To overcome this drawback, a strong boron nitride/silicon oxycarbide (BN/SiOC) aerogel composite with high-temperature resistance and thermal insulation was prepared by the sol-gel method and pyrolysis of the precursor aerogel. The microstructural, mechanical and thermal insulation properties of the composites were investigated, and the effect of the BN content on the microstructure and properties was also clarified. The results indicate that the obtained mesoporous composites exhibit low thermal conductivity (0.04–0.20 W∙m−1 K-1) and high-temperature resistance (∼1300 °C). As the BN content increased from 0 to 15 vol. %, the compressive strength of the composites increased from 2.2 to 20.3 MPa. The obtained composites exhibit considerable promise in high-temperature thermal insulation applications.

High-energy B-O Bonds Enable the Phenolic Aerogel with Enhanced Thermal Stability and Low Thermal Conductivity

Abstract:Phenolic aerogels have addressed considerate application in fabricating lightweight ablative materials owing to their excellent characteristics of large surface area, low bulk density, and low thermal conductivity. However, unsatisfactory thermal stability still limits their extensive applications. To enhance the thermal stability, we reported a facile co-precursor strategy to prepare boron-modified phenolic aerogels, through sol-gel polymerization of phenylboronic acid and phenolic resin. The thermal stability of hybrid aerogels is remarkably enhanced, achieving a char yield of up to 64.16 % at 850 degree celsius due to the much higher bonding energy of B-O bonds. The phenyl-borates structure gradually transferred into B2O3, effectively fixing the oxygen content and reducing the carbon loss during the carbonization process. Moreover, the in-situ formed phenyl-borates structure contributes to forming a denser network, which affords the hybrid aerogels with diverse properties: low density (0.31-0.34 g/cm3), a hierarchical micro-meso-macro porous structure with small particle size (28.42-48.58 nm), promoted compressive strength (20.65-28.46 MPa), and excellent insulation performance (0.0406-0.0564 W/(m center dot k)). These integrated superiorities enable the boron-modified phenolic aerogels to perform effectively in thermal insulation fields, especially for aerospace related industry.
Robust Carbonaceous Nanofiber Aerogels from All Biomass Precursors

Abstract:Aerogels, a type of fascinating material with very low density and high surface area, show many unique properties and unlimited applications. To boost their practical applications, it is necessary to develop efficient, controllable, and low-cost methods to produce high-performance aerogels on a large-scale, preferably in a sustainable way. Here, a general strategy is reported for controllable fabrication of a family of carbonaceous nanofiber aerogels (CNFAs) by biomass-derived nanofibers template-directed hydrothermal carbonization method. Abundant functional groups are exposed on the surface of the prepared carbonaceous nanofibers. Importantly, in contrast to traditional nature biopolymer-based aerogels, a superior combination of good recoverability and high strength is achieved for the CNFAs by adjusting the synthetic parameters. The successful synthesis of such fascinating materials provides an excellent platform for design and construction of devices for fast water treatment. The synthetic strategy and sustainable concept presented in this work will open a new way to prepare advanced aerogels with unique properties for wide applications.
Facile Preparation of Carbon Nanotube Aerogels with Controlled Hierarchical Microstructures and Versatile Performance

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) aerogels with controlled hierarchical microstructures and versatile performance were prepared by a freeze-drying method under the facile freezing temperature of −20°C. The as-prepared CNT aerogels were composed of CNT/binder (sodium carboxymethylcellulose, CMC) hybrid sheet structures, whose morphologies could be controlled by changing the weight ratio of CMC solution to CNT paste. The aerogels displayed a very low density of 32.7–77.7mg/cm3, fairly high mechanical strength, good machinability, an outstanding electrical conductivity of 0.034–0.162S/cm, and an ultralow thermal diffusivity of 2.09–4.54mm2/s. In addition, we proposed formulas to describe the relationships between volume density of the fabricated aerogels and solid content or carbon content in CNT slurries.
Shaping 90 wt% NanoMOFs into Robust Multifunctional Aerogels Using Tailored Bio-Based Nanofibrils

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are hybrid porous crystalline networks with tunable chemical and structural properties. However, their excellent potential is limited in practical applications by their hard-to-shape powder form, making it challenging to assemble MOFs into macroscopic composites with mechanical integrity. While a binder matrix enables hybrid materials, such materials have a limited MOF content and thus limited functionality. To overcome this challenge, nanoMOFs are combined with tailored same-charge high-aspect-ratio cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) to manufacture robust, wet-stable, and multifunctional MOF-based aerogels with 90 wt% nanoMOF loading. The porous aerogel architectures show excellent potential for practical applications such as efficient water purification, CO2 and CH4 gas adsorption and separation, and fire-safe insulation. Moreover, a one-step carbonization process enables these aerogels as effective structural energy-storage electrodes. This work exhibits the unique ability of high-aspect-ratio CNFs to bind large amounts of nanoMOFs in structured materials with outstanding mechanical integrity-a quality that is preserved even after carbonization. The demonstrated process is simple and fully discloses the intrinsic potential of the nanoMOFs, resulting in synergetic properties not found in the components alone, thus paving the way for MOFs in macroscopic multifunctional composites.

Abstract:Abstract Inorganic aerogels have exhibited many superior characteristics with extensive applications, but still plagued a nearly century-old tradeoff between their mechanical and thermal properties. When reducing the thermal conductivity by ultralow density, inorganic aerogels generally suffer from large fragility due to their brittle nature or weak joint crosslinking, while enhancing the mechanical robustness by material design and structural engineering, they easily sacrifice the thermal insulation and stability. Here, we report a chemically bonded multi-nanolayer design and synthesis of a graphene/amorphous boron nitride aerogel to address this typical tradeoff to further enhance the mechanical and thermal properties. Attributed to the chemically bonded interface and coupled toughening effect, our aerogels display a low density of 0.8 mg cm−3 with ultrahigh flexibility (elastic compressive strain up to 99% and bending strain up to 90%), and exceptional thermostability (strength degradation < 3% after sharp thermal shocks), as well as the lowest thermal conductivities in vacuum (only 1.57 mW m−1 K−1 at room temperature and 10.39 mW m−1 K−1 at 500°C) among solid materials to date. This unique combination of mechanical and thermal properties offers an attractive material system for thermal superinsulation at extreme conditions.

Boron Nitride Aerogels Incorporated with Metal Nanoparticles: Multifunctional Platforms for Iodine Capture and Detection

Abstract:Radioactive iodine vapors produced by nuclear fission can pose a significant risk to human health and the environment. Effective monitoring of iodine vapor leakage, capture and storage of radioactive iodine vapor are of great importance for the safety of the nuclear industry. Herein, we report a novel structure-function integrated solid iodine vapor adsorbent based on metal-modified boron nitride (BN) aerogel. Metal-modified BN aerogels incorporated with Cu/Ag nanoparticles (named as BN-Cu and BN-Ag, respectively) are successfully prepared by a metal-induced, ultrasonic-assisted, and in-situ transformation method. The metal-modified BN aerogels show improved mechanical properties in both of the maximum stress and residual deformation. Remarkably, due to the greatly enhanced "host-guest" and "guest-guest" effects by the introduction of metal nanoparticles, the BN-Cu and BN-Ag aerogels exhibit record-breaking iodine vapor adsorption capacities among inorganic adsorbents (1739.8 and 2234.13 wt% respectively), which are even higher than that of most organic adsorbents. Furthermore, an integrated iodine adsorption detection device based on metal-modified aerogels is constructed to realize real-time detection of the electrical properties of aerogels during iodine adsorption. This work provides a foundation for the development of BN aerogels as multifunctional platforms for effective iodine capture and detection. It also introduces new ideas for the use of structural-functional integrated materials in the prevention and control of radioactive iodine pollution.

Abstract:Boron nitride (BN) bulk adsorbents replace their powder ones, which indeed make up for many shortcomings of BN's powders in practical adsorption application and become the most promising BN-based multifunctional adsorption materials. However, the difficulty of synthesis greatly limits their development. Here, we prepare a series of highly porous BN foams (BNFs), via a facile compression forming and controllable high-temperature nitriding method. The BNFs have hierarchical pore characteristics, including abundant micropores (~40 vt.%), and various mesopores and macropores (~60 vt.%), while they possess a robust three-dimensional integrality with maximum compression strength up to ~ 2.2 MPa. These properties make the BNFs kinds of desired bulk adsorbents for application in advanced multifunctional adsorption. Firstly, they can capture various gas molecules, including ultrahigh CO2 capacities of ~ 3.05 mmol/g (0 °C) and ~ 1.75 mmol/g (25 °C), naphthalene of ~ 155 wt% (80 °C) and 89 wt% (20 °C), and liquid nitrogen quantity of ~6.6-times weight of their own weight. In addition, the BNFs with a well hydrophobic-lipophilic surface exhibit remarkable adsorption for a wide range of organic reagents and oils, up to very high capacity of 600–1830 wt%, and show high-end permeation-separation and filtration-adsorption application in oil–water systems. Moreover, as a kind of static block adsorbents, the BNFs also have outstanding pollutant adsorption performances for S8 and Li2Sx in organic solvents, and the Ni(II) ions and methylene blue molecules in water. We believe that our new BNFs materials will be of great significance to lead the BN-based bulk adsorbents for continuous application in more sophisticated fields.
