Abstract:This work proposes a new speed-amplified multi-stable tri-hybrid energy harvesting technique via the multi-stable nonlinearity enhanced frequency up-conversion and rack-pinion mechanisms to efficiently harness structural and biomechanical vibration energy. In the present design, two frequency up-conversion piezoelectric generators, an array-type electromagnetic generator and a sliding-mode triboelectric nanogenerator are integrated together to form a compact and interactive system. By utilizing the rack-pinion mechanism, the relative speed between the stators and the translators of the electromagnetic and triboelectric generators are both doubled. Meanwhile, the process of frequency up-conversion in the piezoelectric generators is also doubled per each cycle. This results in better performance under wideband and low-frequency vibration sources. For verification, a prototype of this design is tested by mechanical excitations and body-induced motions. In the shaker test, the prototype can generate a peak output power of 446.16 mW under an optimal resistance load, resulting in a normalized power density of 4.20 mW cm −3 g −2 at 5 Hz under 1 g. The prototype also exhibits exceptional performance under various human motion tests, it can drive 600 commercial light-emitting diodes simultaneously. Using a commercial DC/DC voltage regulator circuit, the proposed harvester can serve as a universal power source to charge commercial electronic devices, including smartphones and GPS sensors. The present design shows great potential as a sustainable power source for wearable/portable electronics as well as wireless monitoring systems.

Abstract:The vast proliferation of wearables and smart sensing devices in the last decade has created an immense demand for new and efficient powering solutions. The research focus has shifted towards developing simple, cost-effective, flexible device topologies capable of capturing kinetic energy associated with the human body. Piezoelectric and Triboelectric mechanisms are widely employed to convert biomechanical energy to electrical power due to their inherent merits in terms of affordable designs and high energy conversion efficiencies. In this work, we propose a flexible hybrid generator topology incorporating both piezoelectric and triboelectric mechanisms to achieve high electrical output from human motion. To enhance the efficiency and obtain a symmetric output, dual triboelectric generators are employed, which generate time-multiplexed output across the same set of electrodes. The device displays a characteristic ability to distinguish between different body movements as its output depends on the contact area as well as the pressure generated by the motion. This creates numerous avenues for employing the device in self-powered tactile sensing applications. The unique single substrate design makes the device robust and increases its longevity. The V-shaped prototype having an active area of 3.5 cm × 2 cm, is tested under a wide range of biomechanical stimuli, including touching, tapping, and pressing motions. The practical applications of the proposed device as an add-on patch on fabrics, as an in-sole device, and for powering commercial electronics are demonstrated. Apart from this, the reported generator can also fuel low-power devices from various other day-to-day human activities.

Abstract:Energy harvesting technologies are contributing to the development of the Internet of Things. These techniques can provide continuous, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly power supplies and reduce manual maintenance requirements, and thus have strong prospects for sensing and monitoring applications, particularly in certain harsh working environments. The proposed electromagnetic–piezoelectric hybrid harvester contains both electromagnetic generator (EMG) and piezoelectric generator (PEG). Through vibration of the cantilever beam, the magnetic circuit in the soft-magnetic material is both connected and disconnected, and this can cause the magnetic flux in the coil to change dramatically, resulting in induction of a large voltage in the coil. This paper illustrates the feasibility and the optimal characteristics of the proposed hybrid harvester using theoretical verification and simulations, and demonstrates the factors that affect the power generation effect through testing. The study found that the maximum open-circuit voltages of the EMG and the PEG are 16 V and 42 V and the maximum peak powers of the EMG and the PEG reach 20 mW and 35 mW, respectively. The proposed energy harvester offers advantages in terms of both peak voltage and peak power, and provides a new method and concept for the vibration energy harvesting field.

High-Performance Hybrid Generator Based On Low Frequency Stochastic Resonance

Abstract:This paper reports a new hybrid energy harvesting approach which combines triboelectricity and piezoelectricity based on low-frequency (less than 5 Hz, such as environmental vibrations) stochastic resonance. A vibration configuration was well designed to enhance the conversion efficiency of mechanical energy to electricity via the stochastic vibration mechanism. Furthermore, the electric output performance of the proposed generator is significantly strengthened by adding triboelectric effects to bi-stable structured energy harvester. Power density of the piezoelectric part and triboelectric part are 1.85mW/cm(3) and 1.81mW/cm(3), respectively, showing attractive potential for generating high output by harvesting low-frequency vibration from the environment over a broad frequency band.

Abstract:Vibration-energy harvesting is an effective strategy for replacing batteries and provides a long-term power supply to microelectronic devices. Harvesting vibration energy from human motions has attracted research attention in recent years. Here, a novel low-frequency hybrid piezoelectric and electromagnetic broadband harvester is proposed. Two parallel piezoelectric cantilever beams support the harvester and capture environmental vibration energy based on the piezoelectric effect. A permanent magnet is connected by springs to the two beams, and a fixed coil surrounds the moving permanent magnet, enabling energy conversion via the electromagnetic effect and the proof mass. The parameters influencing the output power of the harvester are optimized numerically to boost the harvester's performance. The output power of the proposed hybrid harvester is compared with that of a piezoelectric harvester and an electromagnetic harvester. The simulation results show that the output power is significantly higher for the hybrid harvester than for the piezoelectric and electromagnetic harvesters, and the bandwidth is broader owing to the double cantilevers. An experiment is conducted using a prototype of the hybrid harvester to evaluate its output power. The results show multiple resonant peaks, an extended bandwidth, and a maximum power of 6.28 mW. In contrast, the maximum harvested power of the piezoelectric harvester is only 5.15 mW at 9.6 Hz.

Abstract:Harvesting ambient vibration energy using piezoelectric elements is a promising energy harvesting technology. Energy extraction efficiency is the research focus. This paper presents a novel self-powered hybrid rectifier for piezoelectric energy harvesting. The purpose of this hybrid rectifier is to make the harvested power more efficient and ensure that the rectifier is self-powered. An optimized self-powered peak detection circuit consisting of discrete components reduces circuit losses. The theory and simulation of the hybrid rectifier are presented with a good agreement. The circuit is designed to help realize self-powered wireless sensor networks.

Abstract:Energy harvesting is a key technology for the self-powered mode of wireless sensor nods and mobile terminals. A large number of devices have been developed to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Whereas great efforts have been made to improve the output performance, problems like energy dissipation, device life and response range still need to be addressed. Herein, we report a hybridized triboelectric-piezoelectric-electromagnetic nanogenerator efficiently harvesting vibration energy. Three harvest modes are integrated into a single device, whose core component is a magnetic levitation structure. On the one hand, it presents higher sensitivity than conventional spring or cantilever designs due to low energy loss, which favors the tiny energy harvesting like the slapping desk vibration and the running car vibration. On the other hand, the mechanical fatigue or damage can be avoided by the special structure design. Under 20Hz, triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) can deliver a peak output power of 78.4μW, while the top (EMG2) and the bottom (EMG1) electromagnetic generator can provide a peak output power of 36mW and 38.4mW, respectively. Piezoelectric generator located at top (PEG2) and bottom (PEG1) can contribute a peak output power of 122mW and 105mW, respectively. The capacitor charge measurement reveals that unit combination performance is remarkably stronger than individual performance, and the combination of TENG+EMG1+EMG2+PEG1+PEG2 has the highest energy harvesting capacity. Finally, this device has been integrated into a wireless sensor system. Results show that the wireless sensor system can be activated and transmit temperature and vibration signal to control computer. This work has a vital significance to the development and application of the internet of things.

Abstract:This paper proposes an electrostatic-piezoelectric-electromagnetic hybrid vibrational power generator with different frequency broadening schemes. Both the nonlinear frequency broadening mechanisms and the synergized effect of the electrostatic-piezoelectric-electromagnetic hybrid structures are investigated. The structure and performance of the composite generator are optimized to improve the response bandwidth and performance. We propose that the electrostatic power generation module and the electromagnetic power generation module be introduced into the cantilever beam to make the multifunctional cantilever beam, realizing small integrated output loss, high output voltage, and high current characteristics. When the external load of the electrostatic power generation module is 10 kΩ, its peak power can reach 3.6 mW; when the external load of the piezoelectric power generation module is 2 kΩ, its peak power is 2.2 mW; and when the external load of the electromagnetic power generation module is 170 Ω, its peak power is 0.735 mW. This means that under the same space utilization, the performance is improved by 90%. Moreover, an energy management circuit (ECM) at the rear end of the device is added, through the energy conditioning circuit, the device can directly export a 3.3 V DC voltage to supply power to most of the sensing equipment. In this paper, the hybrid generator’s structure and performance are optimized, and the response bandwidth and performance are improved. In general, the primary advantages of the device in this paper are its larger bandwidth and enhanced performance.

Abstract:Energy harvesting from mechanical strain using piezoelectric materials has attracted considerable attention from researchers for their its utilisation in cutting edge smart devices. Here in, piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and vertically aligned zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods is fabricated for mechanical energy harvesting. ZnO nanorods array over zinc foil was realised via facile wet chemical method at ambient condition. ZnO-PVDF hybrid structure was prepared by stacking PVDF on ZnO nanorods. Synergistic piezoelectric effect of PVDF and ZnO nanorods delivered high output characteristics under applied pressure. As fabricated device showed an open-circuit voltage of ~ 21.5 volts and instantaneous power ~135.45 μW at an applied pressure of 4.5 MPa. Generated output power was more than sufficient to glow commercial green LEDs.

Abstract:Vibration is a widely existing mechanical phenomenon containing enormous energy that can be transformed into electricity without polluting the environment. However, most current mechanical energy harvesters only can scavenge energy from a specific direction, resulting in the waste of energy from other directions. Here, we propose a triboelectric-electromagnetic hybrid generator built on freestanding magnet (FMHG), which is able to harvest low-frequency vibration energy from arbitrary in-plane directions. Besides, it can detect vibration direction from periodical or pulse movement. Under the excitation of shaker, maximum power of 85.7 mu W and 3.29mW are obtained by one electrode pair of the TENG and EMG respectively, which can charge a capacitor of 20 mu F to 7 V rapidly benefiting from the hybrid configuration. The hybrid generator can light up commercial LEDs driven by human running and bicycle braking, as well as distinguish leg movement in eight directions, proving its application potential in building up self-powered sensing systems such as alarms, environmental monitor and human-machine interface.

Abstract:The hybridization of different materials for energy scavenging techniques based on piezoelectric and triboelectric effects has been studied widely for various applications of nanogenerators. However, there are few reports utilizing the same oxide matrix materials with appropriate doping to simultaneously enhance the piezoelectric and triboelectric outputs. Herein, a hybrid nanogenerator (HG) consisting of a piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) and a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) was constructed using (Ba0.838Ca0.162)(Ti0.9072Zr0.092)O3 (BCZTO)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a piezoelectric layer and Ba(Ti0.8Zr0.2)O3 (BZTO)/PDMS as a triboelectric layer. For the PENG, how the electrical output was related to the BCZTO ratio in the BCZTO/PDMS composite films was systematically investigated. For the TENG, remarkably enhanced output performance is attributed to the ferroelectric polarization and large permittivity of the BZTO/PDMS. The Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements show that the poled BZTO/PDMS composite film with a 20 wt. % mass ratio of BZTO has the highest surface charge potential, in line with the macroscopic electrical outputs of the TENG. Interestingly, the output performance of the PENG in the HG is significantly enhanced compared to the PENG acting alone, which is also verified by COMSOL simulation. After rectification, the HG can produce a maximum output voltage of 390 V and a current density of 47 mA/m2. This work not only provides a feasible solution to enhance the output performance of the HG but also offers an effective approach to develop a small, portable power source with promising application in self-powered electronics.

Abstract:The recently introduced triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and the traditional electromagnetic induction generator (EMIG) are coherently integrated in one structure for energy harvesting and vibration sensing/isolation. The suspended structure is based on two oppositely oriented magnets that are enclosed by hollow cubes surrounded with coils, which oscillates in response to external disturbance and harvests mechanical energy simultaneously from triboelectrification and electromagnetic induction. It extends the previous definition of hybrid cell to harvest the same type of energy with multiple approaches. Both the sliding-mode TENG and contact-mode TENG can be achieved in the same structure. In order to make the TENG and EMIG work together, transformers are used to match the output impedance between these two power sources with very different characteristics. The maximum output power of 7.7 and 1.9 mW on the same load of 5 kΩ was obtained for the TENG and EMIG, respectively, after impedance matching. Benefiting from the rational design, the output signal from the TENG and the EMIG are in phase. They can be added up directly to get an output voltage of 4.6 V and an output current of 2.2 mA in parallel connection. A power management circuit was connected to the hybrid cell, and a regulated voltage of 3.3 V with constant current was achieved. For the first time, a logic operation was carried out on a half-adder circuit by using the hybrid cell working as both the power source and the input digit signals. We also demonstrated that the hybrid cell can serve as a vibration isolator. Further applications as vibration dampers, triggers, and sensors are all promising.

Abstract:Conversion of ambient energy to usable electrical energy is attracting attention from researchers since providing a maintenance-free power source for the sensors is critical in any IoT (Internet of Things)-based system and in SHM (structural health monitoring). Continuous health monitoring of structures is advantageous since the damage can be identified at inception and the necessary action taken. Sensor technology has advanced significantly, and MEMS (microelectromechanical systems)-based low-power sensors are available for incorporating into large structures. Relevant signal conditioning and transmission modules have also evolved, making them power-efficient and miniaturized. Various micro wireless sensor nodes (WSN) have also been developed in recent years that require very little power. This paper describes the applications of a novel tunable piezoelectric vibration energy harvester (PVEH) for providing autonomous power to low-power MEMS sensors for use in IoT and remote SHM. The novel device uses piezoelectric material and an ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) and enables electrical tuning of the resonant frequency using a small portion of the power generated.
Low-frequency Wide-Band Hybrid Energy Harvester Based on Piezoelectric and Triboelectric Mechanism

Abstract:Recently, hybrid energy harvester has been considered as an attractive potential approach to response the worldwide energy crisis due to the combination of advantages from different harvesting mechanism. In this paper, a novel low-frequency wide-band hybrid energy harvester based on piezoelectric and triboelectric mechanism is presented and systematically studied including structural design, fabrication process, working principle simulation and measurement. With a vibrational excitation, the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) cantilevers will vibrate and impact the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film on the substrate, producing a piezoelectric output as well as a triboelectric output. The structural parameters of each cantilever are optimized using finite element simulation, and the well-designed PVDF cantilevers with controllable PDMS mass not only reduce the device working frequency but also enlarge the bandwidth. Under a sweep-frequency test, three voltage peaks induced by the piezoelectric part are observed at 15, 32.5 and 47.5 Hz, with the value of 320, 288 and 264 mV, respectively. With the combined triboelectric part, a 20 V peak-peak voltage is generated at 15 Hz. The electrical driving ability of this hybrid energy harvester also has been demonstrated by lighting up a commercial light emitting diode (LED).
Fabrication and performance evaluation of a metal-based bimorph piezoelectric MEMS generator for vibration energy harvesting

Abstract:This paper presents the development of a bimorph microelectromechanical system (MEMS) generator for vibration energy harvesting. The bimorph generator is in cantilever beam structure formed by laminating two lead zirconate titanate thick-film layers on both sides of a stainless steel substrate. Aiming to scavenge vibration energy efficiently from the environment and transform into useful electrical energy, the two piezoelectric layers on the device can be poled for serial and parallel connections to enhance the output voltage or output current respectively. In addition, a tungsten proof mass is bonded at the tip of the device to adjust the resonance frequency. The experimental result shows superior performance the generator. At the 0.5 g base excitation acceleration level, the devices pooled for serial connection and the device poled for parallel connection possess an open-circuit output voltage of 11.6 VP–P and 20.1 VP–P, respectively. The device poled for parallel connection reaches a maximum power output of 423 μW and an output voltage of 15.2 VP–P at an excitation frequency of 143.4 Hz and an externally applied based excitation acceleration of 1.5 g, whereas the device poled serial connection achieves a maximum power output of 413 μW and an output voltage of 33.0 VP–P at an excitation frequency of 140.8 Hz and an externally applied base excitation acceleration of 1.5 g. To demonstrate the feasibility of the MEMS generator for real applications, we finished the demonstration of a self-powered Bluetooth low energy wireless temperature sensor sending readings to a smartphone with only the power from the MEMS generator harvesting from vibration.

Abstract:With the advancement of sensor networks, the exploration of distributed vibrational energy resources bears significant implications. We introduce a multilayer triboelectric-electromagnetic hybrid generator (M-TEHG). The M-TEHG exhibits remarkable output capabilities across a broad frequency spectrum, with a peak power density of 2.8 W/m 3 at 10 Hz. Moreover, by incorporating the gas discharge tube (GDT) as a rapid switch in the BUCK circuit, the M-TEHG provides a continuous and stable power supply for the load. This innovation not only enhances the charging rate of the M-TEHG's capacitor by 43.84–57.66%, but also enables uninterrupted power supply to temperature and humidity sensors. Additionally, the M-TEHG also possesses the capability to monitor vibration frequencies. It utilizes a linear bearing and smooth guide rod structure, effectively mitigating the impact of vibration signals from different angles. The frequency monitoring of the M-TEHG achieves an accuracy of up to 99.1% and demonstrates exceptional linearity. Abstract:In this paper, a hybrid piezoelectric-electromagnetic energy harvester (HEH) based on magnetic couple suction-repulsion motion and centrifugal action is proposed. Using a control variable approach, the effect of two variables on the output performance was investigated under different parameter conditions in order to maximize the output power. At a mounting angle of 60 degrees for the piezoelectric cantilever beam and a mass of 3.2 g for the rectangular magnet, the entire piezoelectric-electromagnetic harvester can produce 13.32 mW of power, which can successfully power low-power electronic devices such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The power generated by mixing piezoelectricity and electromagnetism is 1.16 times greater than the power generated by the piezoelectric generation unit alone and 70.1 times greater than the power generated by the electromagnetic generation unit alone. The composite piezoelectric-electromagnetic hybrid mechanism greatly increases the power output of the entire structure compared to the single generation mode. The suction-repulsion process is accomplished using magnetic coupling. This makes the piezoelectric cantilever beam deformed by the magnetic force and has power output. At the same time, the magnetic suction-repulsion makes the circular magnet complete cutting magnetic induction line motion at the same time, which cleverly combines piezoelectricity and electromagnetism. The form of reciprocating motion of the magnet in the coil frame using suction-repulsion is also proposed for the first time. In addition, compared with those structures that strike the piezoelectric cantilever to generate electricity, this paper uses magnetic coupling, which makes the piezoelectric cantilever beam more durable and longer in use. In summary, this structure has good prospects for application in the direction of powering wireless networks or low-power electronic devices.

Abstract:This paper presents a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) piezoelectric power generator array for vibration energy harvesting. A complete design flow of the vibration-based energy harvester using the finite element method (FEM) is proposed. The modal analysis is selected to calculate the resonant frequency of the harvester, and harmonic analysis is performed to investigate the influence of the geometric parameters on the output voltage. Based on simulation results, a MEMS Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) cantilever array with an integrated large Si proof mass is designed and fabricated to improve output voltage and power. Test results show that the fabricated generator, with five cantilever beams (with unit dimensions of about 3 × 2.4 × 0.05 mm3) and an individual integrated Si mass dimension of about 8 × 12.4 × 0.5 mm3, produces a output power of 66.75 μW, or a power density of 5.19 μW∙mm-3∙g-2 with an optimal resistive load of 220 kΩ from 5 m/s2 vibration acceleration at its resonant frequency of 234.5 Hz. In view of high internal impedance characteristic of the PZT generator, an efficient autonomous power conditioning circuit, with the function of impedance matching, energy storage and voltage regulation, is then presented, finding that the efficiency of the energy storage is greatly improved and up to 64.95%. The proposed self-supplied energy generator with power conditioning circuit could provide a very promising complete power supply solution for wireless sensor node loads.

Abstract:The rapid advancement of electronic devices and wireless sensors has heightened the demand for energy sustainability and portable power solutions. This paper proposes a hybrid piezoelectric-electromagnetic energy harvesting (HP-EEH) structure designed to enhance the efficiency of kinetic energy conversion within the human body. Firstly, the structure and principle of the energy capture device are introduced, and the electromechanical coupling model of the energy harvester is derived using Hamilton's principle. Furthermore, the system is numerically simulated, and the voltage output characteristics of the piezoelectric unit and the electromagnetic unit are analyzed by using the finite element analysis software. Finally, the experimental setup of the (HP-EEH) is constructed, and the voltage output characteristics are tested for different swinging angles and positions. The results show that two parts of energy can be captured simultaneously under ultra-low-frequency motion conditions. At a swing angle of 50 degrees, the piezoelectric and electromagnetic units achieved maximum output power values of 14.96 μW at 0.8 Hz and 10.4 μW at 1.2 Hz, respectively. Incorporating the output power of the electromagnetic unit aims to address the power consumption requirements of low-power devices better.
