Abstract:We study the general structure of models for structure formation, with applications to the reverse engineering of the model from observations. Through a careful accounting of the degrees of freedom in covariant gravitational instability theory, we show that the evolution of structure is completely specified by the stress history of the dark sector. The study of smooth, entropic, sonic, scalar anisotropic, vector anisotropic, and tensor anisotropic stresses reveals the origin, robustness, and uniqueness of specific model phenomenology. We construct useful and illustrative analytic solutions that cover cases with multiple species of differing equations of state relevant to the current generation of models, especially those with effectively smooth components. We present a simple case study of models with phenomenologies similar to that of a LambdaCDM model to highlight reverse-engineering issues. A critical-density universe dominated by a single type of dark matter with the appropriate stress history can mimic a LambdaCDM model exactly.

Abstract:While the LCDM framework has been incredibly successful for modern cosmology, it requires the admission of two mysterious substances as a part of the paradigm, dark energy and dark matter. Although this framework adequately explains most of the large-scale properties of the Universe (i.e., existence and structure of the CMB, the large-scale structure of galaxies, the abundances of light elements and the accelerating expansion), it has failed to make significant predictions on smaller scale features such as the kinematics of galaxies and their formation. In particular, the rotation curves of disk galaxies (the original observational discovery of dark matter) are better represented by non-Newtonian models of gravity that challenge our understanding of motion in the low acceleration realm (much as general relativity provided an extension of gravity into the high acceleration realm e.g., blackholes). The tension between current cold dark matter scenarios and proposed new formulations of gravity in the low energy regime suggests an upcoming paradigm shift in cosmology. And, if history is a guide, observations will lead the way.

Abstract:I review a number of tests of theories for structure formation. Large-scale flows and IRAS galaxies indicate a high density parameter $\Omega \simeq 1$, in accord with inflationary predictions, but it is not clear how this meshes with the uniformly low values obtained from virial analysis on scales $\sim$ 1Mpc. Gravitational distortion of faint galaxies behind clusters allows one to construct maps of the mass surface density, and this should shed some light on the large vs small-scale $\Omega$ discrepancy. Power spectrum analysis reveals too red a spectrum (compared to standard CDM) on scales $\lambda \sim 10-100$ $h^{-1}$Mpc, but the gaussian fluctuation hypothesis appears to be in good shape. These results suggest that the problem for CDM lies not in the very early universe --- the inflationary predictions of $\Omega = 1$ and gaussianity both seem to be OK; furthermore, the COBE result severely restricts modifications such as tilting the primordial spectrum --- but in the assumed matter content. The power spectrum problem can be solved by invoking a cocktail of mixed dark matter. However, if gravitational lensing fails to reveal extended dark mass around clusters then we may be forced to explore more radical possibilities for the dark matter.

Abstract:Galaxies represent the visible fabric of the Universe and there has been considerable progress recently in both observational and theoretical studies. The underlying goal is to understand the present-day diversity of galaxy forms, masses and luminosities in the context of theories for the growth of structure. Popular models predict the bulk of the galaxy population assembled recently, in apparent agreement with optical and near-infrared observations. However, detailed conclusions rely crucially on the choice of the cosmological parameters. Although the star formation history has been sketched to early times, uncertainties remain, particularly in connecting to the underlying mass assembly rate. I discuss the expected progress in determining the cosmological parameters and address the question of which observations would most accurately check contemporary models for the origin of the Hubble sequence. The new generation of ground-based and future space-based large telescopes, equipped with instrumentation appropriate for studying the resolved properties of distant galaxies, offer the potential of substantial progress in this field.

Abstract:We compare a large suite of theoretical cosmological models to observational data from the cosmic microwave background, baryon acoustic oscillation measurements of expansion, Type Ia supernova measurements of expansion, redshift space distortion measurements of the growth of structure, and the local Hubble constant. Our theoretical models include parametrizations of dark energy as well as physical models of dark energy and modified gravity. We determine the constraints on the model parameters, incorporating the redshift space distortion data directly in the analysis. To determine whether models can be ruled out, we evaluate the p-value (the probability under the model of obtaining data as bad or worse than the observed data). In our comparison, we find the well-known tension of H0 with the other data; no model resolves this tension successfully. Among the models we consider, the large-scale growth of structure data does not affect the modified gravity models as a category particularly differently from dark energy models; it matters for some modified gravity models but not others, and the same is true for dark energy models. We compute predicted observables for each model under current observational constraints, and identify models for which future observational constraints will be particularly informative.

Abstract:Multiverse scenarios are common place in contemporary high energy physics and cosmology, although many consider them simply as bold speculations. In any case there is nothing like a single theory or a unified model of the multiverse. Instead, there are innumerable theoretical proposals often reciprocally incompatible. What is common to all these scenarios is the postulated existence of many causally disjointed regions of space/time (if not completely separated space-times) and the consideration of the observable universe as atypical in a global perspective. This paper examines the history of modern cosmology focusing on the forerunners of current ideas, and shows how some fundamental issues tend to present themselves on increasingly deeper levels of physical knowledge.

Abstract:Following the selection metaphor as introduced by Lee Smolin in his 1997 book with respect to a possible model of the reproduction of Universes, this model is being reconstructed utilizing the strict analogical form of the metaphor chosen. It is asked then for the genotypal level associated with the primarily phenotypal model, and it is asked in particular where the information processing mechanism of that cosmological sort of selection could actually be found. It is argued that massive black holes in the centres of galaxies may play this important role. Some consequences on black holes in general are discussed then pointing to the necessity to actually revisit the concepts of virtual and actual black holes also.

Abstract:We review recent developments in theoretical studies of galaxy formation and evolution. In combination with new data from HST, Keck and other large telescopes, numerical and semi-analytic modelling is beginning to build up a coherent picture of galaxy formation. We summarize the current status of modelling of various galactic properties such as the structure of dark matter halos, the galaxy luminosity function, the Tully-Fisher relation, the colour-magnitude relation for ellipticals, the gross morphological properties of galaxies and the counts of faint galaxies as a function of magnitude, redshift and morphology. Many of these properties can be explained, at least at some level, within a broad class of CDM cosmologies, but a number of fundamental issues remain unresolved. We use our semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to interpret the evolutionary status of the Lyman-break galaxies at $z\simeq 3-3.5$ recently discovered by Steidel et al. The abundance and global properties of these objects are compatible with model predictions in a variety of CDM cosmologies, including the standard version. All these models predict mild evolution in the distribution of star formation rates which peaks at around $z\simeq 1$, but is never much larger than it is at present. The Steidel et al. Lyman-break galaxies are among the very first objects in which appreciable star formation is taking place; they thus signal the onset of galaxy formation. We present three example evolutionary histories of Lyman-break galaxies which illustrate that these objects are the precursors of present day, normal, bright ellipticals and spirals.

Abstract:(Abridged) Fundamental tensions between observations and dark-matter based cosmological models have emerged. This updated review has two purposes: to explore new tensions that have arisen in recent years, compounding the unresolved tensions from previous studies, and to use the shortcomings of the current theory to guide the development of a successful model. Tensions arise in view of the profusion of thin disk galaxies, the pronounced symmetrical structure of the Local Group of Galaxies, the common occurrence of planes of satellite systems, the El Gordo and Bullet galaxy clusters, significant matter inhomogeneities on scales much larger than 100 Mpc, and the observed rapid formation of galaxies and super-massive black holes at redshifts larger than 7. Given the nature of the tensions, the real Universe needs to be described by a model in which gravitation is effectively stronger than Einsteinian/Newtonian gravitation at accelerations below Milgrom's acceleration scale. The promising nuHDM model, anchored on Milgromian dynamics but keeping the standard expansion history with dark energy, solves many of the above tensions. However galaxy formation appears to occur too late in this model, model galaxy clusters reach too large masses, and the mass function of model galaxy clusters is too flat and thus top-heavy in comparison to the observed mass function. Classes of models that reassess inflation, dark energy and the role of the CMB should be explored.

Abstract:We consider a model in which the universe is the direct product of a (3+1)-dimensional Friedmann, Robertson-Walker (FRW) space and a compact hyperbolic manifold (CHM). Standard Model fields are confined to a point in the CHM (i.e. to a brane). In such a space, the decay of massive Kaluza-Klein modes leads to the injection of any initial bulk entropy into the observable (FRW) universe. Both Kolmogoro-Sinai mixing due to the non-integrability of flows on CHMs and the large statistical averaging inherent in the collapse of the initial entropy onto the brane smooth out any initial inhomogeneities in the distribution of matter and of 3-curvature on any slice of constant 3-position. If, as we assume, the initial densities and curvatures in each fundamental correlation volume are drawn from some universal underlying distributions independent of location within the space, then these smoothing mechanisms effectively reduce the density and curvature inhomogeneities projected onto the FRW. This smoothing is sufficient to account for the current homogeneity and flatness of the universe. The fundamental scale of physics can be $\gsim 1$TeV. All relevant mass and length scales can have natural values in fundamental units. All large dimensionless numbers, such as the entropy of the universe, are understood as consequences of the topology of spacetime which is not explained. No model for the origin of structure is proffered.

Abstract:The evolution of substructure embedded in non-dissipative dark haloes is studied through N-body simulations of isolated systems, both in and out of initial equilibrium, complementing cosmological simulations of the growth of structure. We determine by both analytic calculations and direct analysis of the N-body simulations the relative importance of various dynamical processes acting on the clumps, such as the removal of material by global tides, clump–clump heating, clump–clump merging and dynamical friction. The ratio of the internal clump velocity dispersion to that of the dark halo is an important parameter; as this ratio approaches a value of unity, heating by close encounters between clumps becomes less important, while the other dynamical processes continue to increase in importance. Our comparison between merging and disruption processes implies that spiral galaxies cannot be formed in a protosystem that contains a few large clumps, but can be formed through the accretion of many small clumps; elliptical galaxies form in a more clumpy environment than do spiral galaxies. Our results support the idea that the central cusp in the density profiles of dark haloes is the consequence of self-limiting merging of small, dense haloes. This implies that the collapse of a system of clumps/substructure is not sufficient to form a cD galaxy, with an extended envelope; plausibly, subsequent accretion of large galaxies is required. The post-collapse system is in general triaxial, with rounder systems resulting from fewer, but more massive, clumps. Persistent streams of material from disrupted clumps can be found in the outer regions of the final system, and at an overdensity of around 0.75, can cover 10 to 30 per cent of the sky.

Abstract:Over the last decades, observations with increasing quality have revolutionized our understanding of the general properties of the Universe. Questions posed for millenia by mankind about the origin, evolution and structure of the cosmos have found an answer. This has been possible mainly thanks to observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background, of the large-scale distribution of matter structure in the local Universe, and of type Ia supernovae that have revealed the accelerated expansion of the Universe. All these observations have successfully converged into the so-called "concordance model". In spite of all these observational successes, there are still some important open problems, the most obvious of which are what generated the initial matter inhomogeneities that led to the structure observable in today's Universe, and what is the nature of dark matter, and of the dark energy that drives the accelerated expansion. In this chapter I will expand on the previous aspects. I will present a general description of the Standard Cosmological Model of the Universe, with special emphasis on the most recent observations that have us allowed to consolidate this model. I will also discuss the shortfalls of this model, its most pressing open questions, and will briefly describe the observational programmes that are being planned to tackle these issues.

Abstract:Over the past century, rooted in the theory of general relativity, cosmology has developed a very successful physical model of the universe: the {\em big-bang model}. Its construction followed different stages to incorporate nuclear processes, the understanding of the matter present in the universe, a description of the early universe and of the large scale structure. This model has been confronted to a variety of observations that allow one to reconstruct its expansion history, its thermal history and the structuration of matter. Hence, what we refer to as the big-bang model today is radically different from what one may have had in mind a century ago. This construction changed our vision of the universe, both on observable scales and for the universe as a whole. It offers in particular physical models for the origins of the atomic nuclei, of matter and of the large scale structure. This text summarizes the main steps of the construction of the model, linking its main predictions to the observations that back them up. It also discusses its weaknesses, the open questions and problems, among which the need for a dark sector including dark matter and dark energy.

The Exochronous Universe: a static solution to the Einstein field equation

Abstract:Arguably our current cosmological paradigm, the so-called $\Lambda$CDM `concordance model', faces an existential crisis. This has largely been brought about by its reliance on the twin concepts of dark matter and dark energy, and the continued inability of the observational and theoretical physics community to find viable candidates for these postulated phenomena. While it is still possible that this search will eventually prove successful, it is perhaps worthwhile looking at alternatives, and in particular, re-examining the very foundations of our current cosmological model to see whether an entirely new cosmological paradigm might provide a better explanation. The main failures of the prevailing cosmological paradigm were reviewed, concentrating on the coincidences and contradictions presented by the relationship between dark matter and dark energy. Revisiting the core features of this paradigm, the Friedman-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric is identified as the likely root cause of current issues with the $\Lambda$CDM model. Building on the concept of a `timeless' universe suggested by a number of theorists in recent years, the exochronous metric is introduced and is shown to give rise to a static solution to the Einstein field equations. The cosmological implications of this model are explored, and we demonstrate that it can result in a universe with a critical energy density that is close to the currently observed baryonic matter density, without the need to invoke dark matter or dark energy.

Modeling the Past Hypothesis: A Mechanical Cosmology

Abstract:There is a paradox in the standard model of cosmology. How can matter in the early universe have been in thermal equilibrium, indicating maximum entropy, but the initial state also have been low entropy (the "past hypothesis"), so as to underpin the second law of thermodynamics? The problem has been highly contested, with the only consensus being that gravity plays a role in the story, but with the exact mechanism undecided. In this paper, we construct a well-defined mechanical model to study this paradox. We show how it reproduces the salient features of standard big-bang cosmology with surprising success, and we use it to produce novel results on the statistical mechanics of a gas in an expanding universe. We conclude with a discussion of potential uses of the model, including the explicit computation of the time-dependent coarse-grained entropies needed to investigate the past hypothesis.

Abstract:The process of gravitational instability initiated by small primordial density perturbations is a vital ingredient of cosmological models that attempt to explain how galaxies and large-scale structure formed in the Universe. In the standard picture (the “concordance” model), a period of accelerated expansion (“inflation”) generated density fluctuations with simple statistical properties through quantum processes (Starobinsky [82], [83], [84]; Guth [39]; Guth & Pi [40]; Albrecht & Steinhardt [2]; Linde [55]). In this scenario the primordial density field is assumed to form a statistically homogeneous and isotropic Gaussian random field (GRF). Over years of observational scrutiny this paradigm has strengthened its hold in the minds of cosmologists and has survived many tests, culminating in those furnished by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP; Bennett et al. [7]; Hinshaw et al. [45].

Abstract:A critical discourse is provided on the current status of the astrophysics of galaxies in view of open fundamental questions on the law of gravitation and the physics-driven variation of the galaxy-wide stellar initial mass function (GWIMF). The Einstein/Newtonian plus cold or warm dark-matter-based models face many significant but unresolved tensions (e.g. planes of satellites, the highly organised and symmetrical structure of the Local Group, the local Gpc-scale void). The accumulating nature of these indicates quite compellingly the need for a different theoretical framework. An example is the prediction, made in 1997, of the existence of satellite galaxies with near-exact properties to the Hercules dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxy discovered in 2007 if it is a tidal dwarf galaxy void of dark matter. Such results indicate that once the evidence is accepted that dark matter particles have no role in galaxies with gravitation being effectively Milgromian, then the resulting theoretical understanding of galaxies becomes much simpler and highly predictive with remarkable successes. Along with these scientific advancements, the recent observational data solidify the existence of one of the most important relations in star-formation theory, namely the mmax-Mecl relation. The data rule out stochastic star formation and confirm that the IMF becomes increasingly top-heavy with increasing star-formation rate density. Galaxies and their embedded-star-cluster building blocks are therefore self-regulated dynamical systems which are computationally accessible. Finding a theory for the formation of galaxies involves the development of a new cosmological model, which may differ substantially from the dark-matter based one. Very significant new opportunities have thus emerged for inquisitive and daring researchers which may appear risky now but almost certainly lead to major breakthroughs.

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology

Abstract:I discuss some central issues in particle physics which are potentially relevant to cosmology. I first briefly review the present (glorious) experimental status of the Standard Model, emphasizing that it provides a firm foundation both for early Universe cosmology and for further exploration toward the basic laws of Nature. I then provide a critique, arguing that while there are no clear discrepancies, there are several major, specific deficiencies of the Standard Model which clearly point up its provisional character. I elaborate on the story theorists have made up to address one of these problems, the problem of scattered multiplets, and show how upon following it out one finds, within existing experiments, encouragement -- bordering on evidence -- for certain ambitious ideas regarding unification and supersymmetry. I briefly describe and contrast two paradigms of supersymmetry breaking, which have markedly different experimental and cosmological consequences. I call attention to specific connections with cosmology where appropriate throughout; and near the end I make some more global remarks. Finally I venture a speculation suggesting, in a fairly concrete way, the possibility that the laws of physics cannot, in principle, be disentangled from cosmology.
