Abstract:Rapidly and differentially rotating compact stars are believed to be formed in binary neutron star merger events, according to both numerical simulations and the multimessenger observation of GW170817. Questions that have not been answered by the observation of GW170817 and remain open are whether or not a phase transition of strong interaction could happen during a binary neutron star merger event that forms a differentially rotating strange star as a remnant as well as the possibility of having a binary strange star merger scenario. The lifetime and evolution of such a differentially rotating star is tightly related to the observations in the postmerger phase. Various studies on the maximum mass of differentially rotating neutron stars have been done in the past, most of which assume the so-called j-constant law as the rotation profile inside the star. In this paper, we extend the studies to a more realistic differential rotation law and concentrate on bare quark star models. Significant differences are found between differentially rotating strange stars and neutron stars, with both the j-const law and the new rotation profile model. A moderate differential rotation rate for neutron stars is found to be too large for strange stars, resulting in a rapid drop in the maximum mass as the differential rotation degree is increased further from (A) over cap similar to 2.0, where (A) over cap is a parameter characterizing the differential rotation rate for the j-const law. As a result, the maximum mass of a differentially rotating self-bound star drops below the uniformly rotating mass-shedding limit for a reasonable degree of differential rotation. The continuous transition to the toroidal sequence is also found to happen at a much smaller differential rotation rate and angular momentum than for neutron stars. In spite of those differences, (A) over cap -insensitive relation between the maximum mass for a given angular momentum is still found to hold, even for the new differential rotation law. Astrophysical consequences of these differences and how to distinguish between strange star and neutron star models with future observations are also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Strangeon stars, which are proposed to describe the nature of pulsar-like compact stars, have passed various observational tests. The maximum mass of a non-rotating strangeon star could be high, which implies that the remnants of binary strangeon star mergers could even be long-lived massive strangeon stars. We study rigidly rotating strangeon stars in the slowly rotating approximation, using the Lennard-Jones model for the equation of state. Rotation can significantly increase the maximum mass of strangeon stars with unchanged baryon numbers, enlarging the mass-range of long-lived strangeon stars. During spin-down after merger, the decrease of radius of the remnant will lead to the release of gravitational energy. Taking into account the efficiency of converting the gravitational energy luminosity to the observed X-ray luminosity, we find that the gravitational energy could provide an alternative energy source for the plateau emission of X-ray afterglow. The fitting results of X-ray plateau emission of some short gamma-ray bursts suggest that the magnetic dipole field strength of the remnants can be much smaller than that of expected when the plateau emission is powered only by spin-down luminosity of magnetars.

Abstract:According to the observational limits on the radius and mass, the fastest rotating pulsar (PSR 1937+21) is probably a strange star, or at least some neutron star equations of state should be ruled out, if we suggest that a dipole magnetic field is relevant to its radio emission. We presume that the millisecond pulsar is a strange star with much low mass, small radius and weak magnetic moment.

Abstract:We have studied strange star properties both at zero temperature and at finite temperatures and searched signatures of strange stars in gamma-ray, x-ray and radio astronomy. We have a set of Equations of State (EoS) for strange quark matter (SQM) and solving the TOV equations, we get the structure of strange stars. The maximum mass for a strange star decreases with the increase of temperature, because at high temperatures, the EoS become softer. One important aspect of strange star is that, surface tension depends on the size and structure of the star and is significantly larger than the conventional values. Moment of inertia is another important parameter for compact stars as by comparing theoretical values with observed estimate, it is possible to constrain the dense matter Equation of State. We hope that this approach will help us to decide whether the members of the double pulsar system PSR J0737-3039 are neutron stars or strange stars.

Rotating NSs/QSs and recent astrophysical observations

Abstract:Both fast and slow configurations of rotating neutron stars (NSs) are studied with the recently-constructed unified NS EoSs. The calculations for pure quark stars (QSs) and hybrid stars (HSs) are also done, using several updated quark matter EoSs and Gibbs construction for obtaining hadron-quark mixed phase. All three types of EoSs fulfill the recent 2-solar-mass constrain. By confronting the glitch observations with the theoretical calculations for the crustal moment of inertia (MoI), we find that the glitch crisis is still present in Vela-like pulsars. An upcoming accurate MoI measurement (eg., a possible 10\% accuracy for pulsar PSR J0737-3039A) could distinguish QSs from NSs, since the MoIs of QSs are generally $> \sim 1.5 $ times larger than NSs and HSs, no matter the compactness and the mass of the stars. Using tabulated EoSs, we compute stationary and equilibrium sequences of rapidly rotating, relativistic stars in general relativity from the well-tested $rns$ code, assuming the matter comprising the star to be a perfect fluid. All three observed properties of the short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) internal plateaus sample are simulated using the rotating configurations of NSs/QSs as basic input. We finally argue that for some characteristic SGRBs, the post-merger products of NS-NS mergers are probably supramassive QSs rather than NSs, and NS-NS mergers are a plausible location for quark deconfinement and the formation of QSs.

Abstract:It is shown that protostrange stars (PSSs) can be convective and that there are two possible scenarios describing their turbulence. Besides the local turbulence on the scale which is less than the mean free path of neutrinos, large-scale ( 1 km) convection also may occur with properties that are similar to those of convection in protoneutron stars (PNSs). We thus suggest that strange stars can also create dynamo-originated magnetic fields during the deleptonization episode soon after a supernova explosion. Further detailed investigations are needed to see whether or not strange stars and neutron stars can be distinguished according to the differences in dynamo actions in strange quark matter and in neutron matter. The magnetic fields of strange stars and neutron stars may also behave very differently during the accretion-phase when the fields decay.
Anisotropic Strange Stars in the Spotlight: Unveiling Constraints through Observational Data

Abstract:Motivated by the recent suggestions that very massive pulsar (PSR J0952-0607) and very light compact object (HESS J1731-347) exist, in this article, we revisit the possibility of such objects being strange stars instead of the standard hadronic neutron stars. We study the possible presence of local anisotropy and how it affects the macroscopic properties of strange stars and compare our results with the recent constraints presented in the literature. We found that the presence of anisotropy increases the maximum mass, the radius of the canonical star, and its tidal deformability for positive values of $\lambda_{\rm BL}$ and the opposite for negative values. We also show that although we cannot rule out the possibility of very compact objects being standard hadronic neutron stars, strange stars easily fulfill most of the observational constraints.

Abstract:Abstract The strong interactions at low energy scales determine the state of the supranuclear matter in the pulsar-like compact objects. It is proposed that the bulk strong matter could be composed of strangeons, which are quark clusters with a nearly equal number of three light-flavor quarks. In this work, to characterize the strong-repulsive interactions at short distances and the non-relativistic nature of the strangeons, the Lennard-Jones model is used to describe the equation of state (EoS) of strangeon stars (SSs). We investigate the static, the slowly rotating, and the tidally deformed SSs in detail. The corrections resulted from the finite surface densities are considered crucially in the perturbative approaches. We also study the universal relations between the moments of inertia, the tidal deformabilities, and the quadrupole moments. Those results are ready to be used for various purposes in astrophysics, and possible constraints from contemporary observations on the parameter space of the Lennard-Jones model are discussed. Future observations of the pulsars’ radio signals, the X-ray emissions from the hot spots on the surface of the stars, and the gravitational waves (GWs) from binary mergers can give tighter constraints or even verify or falsify the existence of SSs.

Spherically symmetric anisotropic strange stars

Abstract:In this work, we made an extensive study about the possible presence of anisotropies in strange stars. To accomplish this task, we use three different configurations for the strange matter: the unpaired matter, a two-flavor super-conducting (2SC) strange matter, and a fully three-flavor super-conducting strange matter (CFL). For each configuration, we calculate the relevant quantities for the strange stars, such as the mass-radius relation, the dimensionless tidal parameter, the moment of inertia, and the surface curvature for different degrees of anisotropies. Whenever possible, we compare our results with constraints found in the literature, especially focusing on the existence of very massive pulsars (PSR J0952-0607), as well as very light compact objects (HESS J1731-347).

Abstract:The nature of pulsar-like compact stars is essentially a central question of the fundamental strong interaction (explained in quantum chromo-dynamics) at low energy scale, the solution of which still remains a challenge though tremendous efforts have been tried. This kind of compact objects could actually be strange quark stars if strange quark matter in bulk may constitute the true ground state of the strong-interaction matter rather than Fe^56 (the so-called Witten's conjecture). From astrophysical points of view, however, it is proposed that strange cluster matter could be absolutely stable and thus those compact stars could be strange cluster stars in fact. This proposal could be regarded as a general Witten's conjecture: strange matter in bulk could be absolutely stable, in which quarks are either free (for strange quark matter) or localized (for strange cluster matter). Strange cluster with three-light-flavor symmetry is renamed strangeon, being coined by combining "strange nucleon" for the sake of simplicity. A strangeon star can then be thought as a 3-flavored gigantic nucleus, and strangeons are its constituent as an analogy of nucleons which are the constituent of a normal (micro) nucleus. The observational consequences of strangeon stars show that different manifestations of pulsar-like compact stars could be understood in the regime of strangeon stars, and we are expecting more evidence for strangeon star by advanced facilities (e.g., FAST, SKA, and eXTP).

Abstract:What if normal baryonic matter is compressed so tightly that atomic nuclei come into close contact? This question has been asked since 1930s. The first answer was presented by Lev Landau whose speculation has been developed, and the concept of neutron star is then popularized. However, another answer is related to strange star, which becomes worthy of attention especially after the establishment of the standard model of particle physics in 1960s. The basic ideas of this study are introduced pedagogically. We must point out emphatically that flavor symmetry and strong coupling between quarks would be essential in seeking true answer to the question. The final answer is expected to appear in the era of multimessenger astronomy. It is emphasized too that, besides the differences of global properties (e.g., mass-radius relation, maximum mass, tidal deformability), the strong-bound surface of strange star (rather than the gravity-bound one for conventional neutron star) could play an important role in identifying a strange star by astronomical observations.

Abstract:This article starts by providing an introductory overview of the theoretical mechanics of rotating neutron stars as developped to account for the frequency variations, and particularly the discontinuous glitches, observed in pulsars. The theory suggests, and the observations seem to confirm, that an essential role is played by the interaction between the solid crust and inner layers whose superfluid nature allows them to rotate independently. However many significant details remain to be clarified, even in much studied cases such as the Crab and Vela. The second part of this article is more technical, concentrating on just one of the many physical aspects that needs further development, namely the provision of a satisfactorily relativistic (local but not microscopic) treatment of the effects of the neutron superfluidity that is involved.

Magnetic Structure of Rapidly Rotating FK Comae-Type Coronae

Abstract:We present a three-dimensional simulation of the corona of an FK Com-type rapidly rotating G giant using a magnetohydrodynamic model that was originally developed for the solar corona in order to capture the more realistic, non-potential coronal structure. We drive the simulation with surface maps for the radial magnetic field obtained from a stellar dynamo model of the FK Com system. This enables us to obtain the coronal structure for different field topologies representing different periods of time. We find that the corona of such an FK Com-like star, including the large scale coronal loops, is dominated by a strong toroidal component of the magnetic field. This is a result of part of the field being dragged by the radial outflow, while the other part remains attached to the rapidly rotating stellar surface. This tangling of the magnetic field,in addition to a reduction in the radial flow component, leads to a flattening of the gas density profile with distance in the inner part of the corona. The three-dimensional simulation provides a global view of the coronal structure. Some aspects of the results, such as the toroidal wrapping of the magnetic field, should also be applicable to coronae on fast rotators in general, which our study shows can be considerably different from the well-studied and well-observed solar corona. Studying the global structure of such coronae should also lead to a better understanding of their related stellar processes, such as flares and coronal mass ejections, and in particular, should lead to an improved understanding of mass and angular momentum loss from such systems.

Abstract:The conversion from neutron stars with different equation of states (EOSs) for neutron matter into strange stars with different EOSs for strange quark matter has been studied in a general relativistic numerical calculation in this paper. For hot neutron stars, their conversion may lead to great variations in their rotation periods, of which the magnitude would be greatly dependent upon the EOS for neutron matter, and of which the timescale would be greatly determined by the EOS for strange matter. This phenomenon appears as giant glitches, which might provide a probe of EOSs for both neutron matter and strange matter. But for cold neutron stars, their conversion may result in a population of gamma-ray bursts.

Abstract:The equations of state for neutron matter, strange and non-strange hadronic matter in the chiral SU(3) quark mean-field model are applied in the study of slowly rotating neutron stars and hadronic stars. The radius, mass, moment of inertia, and other physical quantities are carefully examined. The effect of the nucleon crust for the strange hadronic star is exhibited. Our results show that the rotation can increase the maximum mass of compact stars significantly. For a big enough mass of pulsars which cannot be explained as strange hadronic stars, theoretical approaches to increase the maximum mass are addressed.

Abstract:Strange stars with low masses are suggested to exist in reality, the origin of which could be via accretion-induced collapse (AIC) of white dwarfs. Such a strange star is likely bare, and would thus spin very fast, even to a period of < 0.1 ms. Strange stars with low masses may differ from those with solar-masses in various astrophysical appearances. Observations to test this “low-mass” idea are proposed.
