Abstract:We develop a spanning set for weak modules of C_2 co-finite vertex operator algebras. This spanning set has finiteness properties that we use to show weak modules are C_n co-finite and A_n(M) is finite dimensional.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce and study new classes of subVOAs of the lattice vertex operator algebras, which we call the conic, Borel, and parabolic-type subVOAs. These CFT-type VOAs, which are not necessarily strongly finitely generated, satisfy similar properties with the usual Borel and parabolic subalgebras of a Lie algebra. For the lowest-rank nontrivial example of Borel-type subVOA $V_{B}$ of $V_{\Z\al}$, we explicitly determine its Zhu's algebra $A(V_B)$ in terms of generators and relations.

Orbifolds of Pointed Vertex Operator Algebras I

Abstract:By a pointed vertex operator algebra (VOA) we mean one whose modules are all simple currents (i.e. invertible), e.g. lattice VOAs. This paper systematically explores the interplay between their orbifolds and tensor category theory. We begin by supplying an elementary proof of the Dijkgraaf-Witten conjecture, which predicts the representation theory of holomorphic VOA orbifolds. We then apply that argument more generally to the situation where the automorphism subgroup fixes all VOA modules, and relate the result to recent work of Mason-Ng and Naidu. Here our results are complete. We then turn to the other extreme, where the automorphisms act fixed-point freely on the modules, and realize any possible nilpotent group as lattice VOA automorphisms. This affords a considerable generalization of the Tambara-Yamagami categories. We conclude by considering some hybrid actions. In this way we use tensor category theory to organize and generalize systematically several isolated examples and special cases scattered in the literature. Conversely, we show how VOA orbifolds can be used to construct broad classes of braided crossed fusion categories and modular tensor categories.

Abstract:We consider the possible role that chiral orbifold conformal field theories may play in describing the edge state theories of quantum Hall systems. This is a generalization of work that already exists in the literature, where it has been shown that 1+1 chiral bosons living on a n-dimensional torus, and which couple to a U_1 gauge field, give rise to anomalous electric currents, the anomaly being related to the Hall conductivity. The well known $O(n,n;Z)$ duality group associated with such toroidal conformal field theories transforms the edge states and Hall conductivities in a way which makes interesting connections between different theories, e.g. between systems exhibiting the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect. In this paper we try to explore the extension of these constructions to the case where such bosons live on a n-dimensional orbifold. We give a general formalism for discussing the relevant quantities like the Hall conductance and their transformation under the duality groups present in orbifold compactifications. We illustrate these ideas by presenting a detailed analysis of a toy model based on the two-dimensional Z_3 orbifold. In this model we obtain new classes of filling fractions, which generally the correspond to fermionic edge states carrying fractional electric charge. We also consider the relation between orbifold edge theories and Luttinger liquids (LL's), which in the past have provided important insights into the physics of quantum Hall systems.

Abstract:Inspired by code vertex operator algebras (VOAs) and their representation theory, we define code algebras, a new class of commutative non-associative algebras constructed from binary linear codes. Let C be a binary linear code of length n. A basis for the code algebra A C consists of n idempotents and a vector for each non-constant codeword of C. We show that code algebras are almost always simple and, under mild conditions on their structure constants, admit an associating bilinear form. We determine the Peirce decomposition and the fusion law for the idempotents in the basis, and we give a construction to find additional idempotents, called the s-map, which comes from the code structure. For a general code algebra, we classify the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the smallest examples of the s-map construction, and hence show that certain code algebras are axial algebras. We give some examples, including that for a Hamming code H 8 where the code algebra A H 8 is an axial algebra and embeds in the code VOA V H 8 .

Commutative algebras in Grothendieck-Verdier categories, rigidity, and vertex operator algebras

Abstract:Let $A$ be a commutative algebra in a braided monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$; e.g., $A$ could be an extension of a vertex operator algebra (VOA) $V$ in a category $\mathcal{C}$ of $V$-modules. We study when the category $\mathcal{C}_A$ of $A$-modules in $\mathcal{C}$ and its subcategory $\mathcal{C}_A^{\text{loc}}$ of local modules inherit rigidity from $\mathcal{C}$, and then we find conditions for $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{C}_A$ to inherit rigidity from $\mathcal{C}_A^{\text{loc}}$. First, we assume $\mathcal{C}$ is a braided finite tensor category and prove rigidity of $\mathcal{C}_A$ and $\mathcal{C}_A^{\text{loc}}$ under conditions based on criteria of Etingof-Ostrik for $A$ to be an exact algebra in $\mathcal{C}$. As a corollary, we show that if $A$ is a simple $\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$-graded VOA with a strongly rational vertex operator subalgebra $V$, then $A$ is strongly rational, without requiring the categorical dimension of $A$ as a $V$-module to be non-zero. Next, we assume $\mathcal{C}$ is a Grothendieck-Verdier category, i.e., $\mathcal{C}$ admits a weaker duality structure than rigidity. We first prove $\mathcal{C}_A$ is also a Grothendieck-Verdier category. Using this, we prove that if $\mathcal{C}_A^{\text{loc}}$ is rigid, then so is $\mathcal{C}$ under conditions such as a mild non-degeneracy assumption on $\mathcal{C}$, an assumption that every simple object of $\mathcal{C}_A$ is local, and that induction from $\mathcal{C}$ to $\mathcal{C}_A$ commutes with duality. These conditions are motivated by free field-like VOA extensions $V\subseteq A$ where $A$ is often an indecomposable $V$-module, so our result will make it more feasible to prove rigidity for many vertex algebraic monoidal categories. In a follow-up work, our result will be used to prove rigidity of the category of weight modules for the simple affine VOA of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ at any admissible level.

In this paper, we study nullity-[math] toroidal extended affine Lie algebras in the context of vertex algebras and their [math]-coordinated modules. Among the main results, we introduce a variant of toroidal extended affine Lie algebras, associate vertex algebras to the variant Lie algebras, and establish a canonical connection between modules for toroidal extended affine Lie algebras and [math]-coordinated modules for these vertex algebras. Furthermore, by employing some results of Billig, we obtain an explicit realization of a class of irreducible modules for the variant Lie algebras.

Abstract:is an intermediate Lie algebra filling a hole between and in the Deligne–Cvitanović exceptional series. It was found independently by Mathur, Muhki, Sen in the classification of 2d RCFTs via modular linear differential equations (MLDE) and by Deligne, Cohen, de Man in representation theory. In this paper we propose some new vertex operator algebras (VOA) associated with and give some useful information at small levels. We conjecture that the affine VOA is rational if and only if the level k is at most 5, and provide some evidence from the viewpoint of MLDE. We propose a conjectural Weyl dimension formula for infinitely many irreducible representations of , which generates almost all irreducible representations of with level . More concretely, we propose the affine VOA at level 2 and the rank-two instanton VOA associated with . We compute the VOA characters and provide some coset constructions. These generalize the previous works of Kawasetsu for affine VOA at level 1 and of Arakawa–Kawasetsu at level . We then predict the conformal weights of affine VOA at level 3, 4, 5.

Abstract:A series of associative algebras $A_n(V)$ for a vertex operator algebra $V$ over an arbitrary algebraically closed field and nonnegative integers $n$ are constructed such that there is a one to one correspondence between irreducible $A_n(V)$-modules which are not $A_{n-1}(V)$ modules and irreducible $V$-modules. Moreover, $V$ is rational if and only if $A_n(V)$ is semisimple for all $n.$ In particular, the homogeneous subspaces of any irreducible $V$-module are finite dimensional for rational vertex operator algebra $V.$

Abstract:We construct projective covers of irreducible V -modules in the category of grading-restricted generalized V -modules when V is a vertex operator algebra satisfying the following conditions: 1. V is C 1 -cofinite in the sense of Li. 2. There exists a positive integer N such that the differences between the real parts of the lowest conformal weights of irreducible V -modules are bounded by N and such that the associative algebra A N ( V ) is finite dimensional. This result shows that the category of grading-restricted generalized V -modules is a finite abelian category over C . Using the existence of projective covers, we prove that if such a vertex operator algebra V also satisfies Condition 3 that irreducible V -modules are R -graded and C 1 -cofinite in the sense of the author, then the category of grading-restricted generalized V -modules is closed under operations ⧅ P ( z ) for z ∈ C × . We also prove that other conditions for applying the logarithmic tensor product theory developed by Lepowsky, Zhang and the author hold. Consequently, for such V , this category has a natural structure of braided tensor category. In particular, when V is of positive energy and C 2 -cofinite, Conditions 1–3 are satisfied and thus all the conclusions hold.

Abstract:We extend the recently-introduced weak Bruhat interval modules of the type A $0$-Hecke algebra to all finite Coxeter types. We determine, in a type-independent manner, structural properties for certain general families of these modules, with a primary focus on projective covers and injective hulls. We apply this approach to recover a number of results on type A $0$-Hecke modules in a uniform way, and obtain some additional results on recently-introduced families of type A $0$-Hecke modules.

Abstract:We study the extensions of two left modules for a meromorphic open-string vertex algebra V . We show that the extensions satisfying some technical but natural convergence conditions are in bijective correspondence to the first cohomology classes associated to the V -bimodule constructed in Huang and Qi (The first cohomology, derivations and the reductivity of a meromorphic open-string vertex algebra, Transactions of American Mathematical Society, 373 (2020)). When V is grading-restricted and contains a nice vertex subalgebra , those convergence conditions hold automatically. In addition, we show that the dimension of is bounded above by the fusion rule in the category of -modules. In particular, if the fusion rule is finite, then is finite-dimensional. We also give an example of an abelian category consisting of certain modules of the Virasoro VOA that does not contain any nice subalgebras, while the convergence conditions hold for every object.

Abstract:We show that the affine vertex superalgebra $V^k(\mathfrak{osp}_{1|2n})$ at generic level $k$ embeds in the equivariant $\mathcal W$-algebra of $\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}$ times $4n$ free fermions. This has two corollaries: (1) it provides a new proof that for generic $k$, the coset $\text{Com}(V^k(\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}), V^k(\mathfrak{osp}_{1|2n}))$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal W^\ell(\mathfrak{sp}_{2n})$ for $\ell = -(n+1) + \frac{k+n+1}{2k+2n+1}$, and (2) we obtain the decomposition of ordinary $V^k(\mathfrak{osp}_{1|2n})$-modules into $V^k(\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}) \otimes \mathcal W^\ell(\mathfrak{sp}_{2n})$-modules. Next, if $k$ is an admissible level and $\ell$ is a non-degenerate admissible level for $\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}$, we show that the simple algebra $L_k(\mathfrak{osp}_{1|2n})$ is an extension of the simple subalgebra $L_k(\mathfrak{sp}_{2n}) \otimes {\mathcal W}_{\ell}(\mathfrak{sp}_{2n})$. Using the theory of vertex superalgebra extensions, we prove that the category of ordinary $L_k(\mathfrak{osp}_{1|2n})$-modules is a semisimple, rigid vertex tensor supercategory with only finitely many inequivalent simple objects. It is equivalent to a certain subcategory of $\mathcal W_\ell(\mathfrak{sp}_{2n})$-modules. A similar result also holds for the category of Ramond twisted modules. Due to a recent theorem of Robert McRae, we get as a corollary that categories of ordinary $L_k(\mathfrak{sp}_{2n})$-modules are rigid.

Abstract:In the present paper we study the following problem: how to construct a coherent orthoalgebra which has only a finite number of elements, but at the same time does not admit a bivaluation (i.e. a morphism with a codomain being an orthoalgebra with just two elements). This problem is important in the perspective of Bell-Kochen-Specker theory, since one can associate such an orthoalgebra to every saturated non-colorable finite configuration of projective lines. The first result obtained in this paper provides a general method for constructing finite orthoalgebras. This method is then applied to obtain a new infinite family of finite coherent orthoalgebras that do not admit bivaluations. The corresponding proof is combinatorial and yields a description of the groups of symmetries for these orthoalgebras.
Spanoids - an abstraction of spanning structures, and a barrier for LCCs

Abstract:We introduce a simple logical inference structure we call a $\textsf{spanoid}$ (generalizing the notion of a matroid), which captures well-studied problems in several areas. These include combinatorial geometry, algebra (arrangements of hypersurfaces and ideals), statistical physics (bootstrap percolation) and coding theory. We initiate a thorough investigation of spanoids, from computational and structural viewpoints, focusing on parameters relevant to the applications areas above and, in particular, to questions regarding Locally Correctable Codes (LCCs). One central parameter we study is the $\textsf{rank}$ of a spanoid, extending the rank of a matroid and related to the dimension of codes. This leads to one main application of our work, establishing the first known barrier to improving the nearly 20-year old bound of Katz-Trevisan (KT) on the dimension of LCCs. On the one hand, we prove that the KT bound (and its more recent refinements) holds for the much more general setting of spanoid rank. On the other hand we show that there exist (random) spanoids whose rank matches these bounds. Thus, to significantly improve the known bounds one must step out of the spanoid framework. Another parameter we explore is the $\textsf{functional rank}$ of a spanoid, which captures the possibility of turning a given spanoid into an actual code. The question of the relationship between rank and functional rank is one of the main questions we raise as it may reveal new avenues for constructing new LCCs (perhaps even matching the KT bound). As a first step, we develop an entropy relaxation of functional rank to create a small constant gap and amplify it by tensoring to construct a spanoid whose functional rank is smaller than rank by a polynomial factor. This is evidence that the entropy method we develop can prove polynomially better bounds than KT-type methods on the dimension of LCCs.

Abstract:We identify vertex operator algebras (VOAs) of a class of Argyres-Douglas (AD) matters with two types of non-abelian flavor symmetries. They are the $W$ algebra defined using nilpotent orbit with partition $[q^m,1^s]$. Gauging above AD matters, we can find VOAs for more general $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs engineered from 6d $(2,0)$ theories. For example, the VOA for general $(A_{N-1}, A_{k-1})$ theory is found as the coset of a collection of above $W$ algebras. Various new interesting properties of 2d VOAs such as level-rank duality, conformal embedding, collapsing levels, coset constructions for known VOAs can be derived from 4d theory.

Abstract:We consider how a vertex operator algebra can be extended to an abelian intertwining algebra by a family of weak twisted modules which are {\em simple currents} associated with semisimple weight one primary vectors. In the case that the extension is again a vertex operator algebra, the rationality of the extended algebra is discussed. These results are applied to affine Kac-Moody algebras in order to construct all the simple currents explicitly (except for $E_8$) and to get various extensions of the vertex operator algebras associated with integrable representations.
